    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Odds on various things over the next few months........

-- Jacksonville Jaguars/Oakland Raiders are both only 20-1 to go winless (0-16) next season.

    -- Broncos/Patriots/49ers are all 20-1 to go undefeated (16-0).

-- Kentucky (3-1) is favored to win the college hoop title next spring.

-- Heaviest Week 1 underdog in NFL are Super Bowl champ Ravens, who are getting 8.5 points in Denver September 5, a Thursday night.

-- There are six road favorites in Week 1, with Patriots (-7.5) heaviest of the six favorites, at Buffalo.

    -- Falcons-Saints game has highest Week 1 total, at 54. Chiefs-Jaguars (39.5) is oinly Week 1 game with a total under 40.

    *****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Odds and ends after a day of hoop.........

    13) NBA Summer League is solid entertainment; for $28, you can sit there all day, stay out of the heat (100 degrees as I type this) and watch young guys play ball with many of their futures on the line. If you like hoop, there are a lot worse ways to spend a summer day.

    12) Keep an eye on a kid named Ian Clark; he played college ball at Belmont, so he's used to winning. Clark scored 16 ppg for Miami's summer league team in Orlando, then flew all night and played 10:53 for the Warriors' team here in Las Vegas Saturday.

Clark only scored one point Saturday (try playing ball on jet lag someday, it ain't easy), but in that 10:53 he played, Golden State was +10, and coaches notice that stuff. It matters.

    11) At Belmont LY, Clark made 45.9% of his 3's, 64.6% of his 2's, 83.3% from the foul line. All for a team that went 26-7. Am curious to see which training camp he goes to, but one way or another, Ian Clark will be making good money playing ball next year, hopefully in the NBA.

    10) Kansas rookie Ben McLemore threw in a 4-23 effort (1-11 behind arc) in the Kings' 76-73 loss to Dallas. Not a strong debut, but at least he wasn't shy. Yikes.

I'll have more on the summer league next week; expect to be there 2-3 more days, during the baseball All-Star break.

    9) Tim Lincecum was 1-7, 5.68 in his last ten starts before his 148-pitch no-hitter in San Diego Saturday night; his 148 pitches are 16 more than any other pitcher in big leagues has thrown in any game this season.

    8) In two starts since throwing his no-hitter, Homer Bailey has allowed 20 hits in 11.2 IP.

    7) Unusual that the University of Toledo has a big ad on the wall of the bullpen at Comerica Park in Detroit; Toledo is in Ohio. Detroit isn't.

    6) Marlins' manager Mike Redmond is making the best of an impossible job; his Marlins are 22-16 in their last 38 games, the 2nd-best record in the NL during that time. Miami traded its best pitcher (Nolasco) to LA, so the job gets harder, but he is proving to be an excellent skipper.

    5) When FOX replaces Tim McCarver as its #1 baseball analyst next year, I hope they give Eric Karros a chance at the job; he is informed, calm, and he knows his stuff. He would do a very good job.

    4) Good to hear Darin Sutton doing the Dodger game on FOX Saturday; enjoyed him and Mark Grace on Arizona games the last few years.

    3) Coach K and Roy Williams would like the ACC tournament to come to New York City (Coach K sounded more enthusiastic), which tells you how critical recrtuiting is in college sports. The ACC tournament is an integral part of the culture on Tobacco Road.

But TV exposure, and exposure to the many players in the northeast is vital to recruiting, which is the lifeline of any program, even the big boys. Mark Gottfried, NC State's coach, was less enthusiastic about the move.

    2) Mets skipped Matt Harvey Saturday (he was healthy enough to throw a bullpen session Friday); am dying to see if he pitches in the All-Star Game Tuesday night at Citi Field. If he does, it tells me the Mets' organization is focused on things other than winning. Not really sure what those things are.

    1) Early betting line on the All-Star Game: National League, -$130, 8.

NASCAR betting: Camping World RV Sales 301

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series shifts to New Hampshire for the Camping World RV Sales 301 on Sunday.

      Here’s our race preview:

      Favorite: Denny Hamlin (+625)

Hamlin won last year’s September race at New Hampshire and has finished in the top 10 in 10 of his last 14 Cup races at the track. His 7.929 average finishing percentage here is the best on the circuit.

      Live dog: Tony Stewart (+1250)

Stewart has 14 top five finishes, including three wins, in 28 career starts at NHMS. He ranks second out of 49 drivers with average place of 9.2 at events here over the past eight years.

      Long shot: Ryan Newman (+3200)

Newman has 14 top 10 finishes, including three wins in 21 Cup starts at NHMS. Great value at +3200.

Key stat: Eight of the 36 (22.2%) Sprint Cup races at NHMS have been won from the starting front row.

      Notable quotable:

“It is a tough track and I think your mindset needs to be focused because it is easy to get frustrated on that race track. You can get inside of someone but to complete the pass is another story. My mindset at New Hampshire is to be calm and race to the conditions I have and not get overly frustrated.” – Jimmie Johnson on NHMS.

Odds to win the Camping World RV 301 courtesy of 5Dimes:

      Denny Hamlin 25-4
      Jimmie Johnson 13-2
      Jeff Gordon 17-2
      Clint Bowyer 35-4
      Kasey Kahne 21-2
      Kyle Busch 11-1
      Tony Stewart 25-2
      Brad Keselowski 13-1
      Dale Earnhardt Jr. 13-1

Three NFL teams drawing sharp action this offseason

Not one single snap has been taken in the 2013 NFL season but plenty of sharp handicappers already have their minds made up on a handful of teams.

With the release of early odds, like win totals, Games of the Year, and futures, bettors can voice their opinion well before Week 1 of the schedule. We talked to sportsbooks and pro handicappers about which NFL teams are being bet by the wiseguys this summer.

        Sharps like…

        New Orleans Saints

        Win total: 9.5 (Over -130)
        Divisional odds: +200
        Super Bowl odds: +2,500

The Saints forget about 2012 and “Bounty Gate”, returning head coach Sean Peyton to the sidelines. New Orleans has one of the most lethal passing attacks in the league, headlined by QB Drew Brees, and a move to the 3-4 should wake up the defense.

Expert opinion: Teddy Covers, pro handicapper, “Last year was a wasted season for the Saints, with all of their coaching upheaval, but Sean Payton and his complete staff are poised for a return to the playoffs in 2013. Wiseguys have been betting on New Orleans all summer, driving up their pointspreads and season win total while driving down their odds to win the NFC South and/or the Super Bowl.”

        Miami Dolphins

        Win total: 7.5 (Over -160)
        Divisional odds: +450
        Super Bowl odds: +5,000

The Dolphins enter Year 2 under QB Ryan Tannehill and gave the second-year passer some new toys. Miami added WRs Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson along with TE Dustin Keller. The AFC East is weak with even the Patriots looking shaky this offseason.

Expert opinion: Aron Black, Bet365.com, “Not surprisingly, as with other future markets, this play is also based on the perceived weakness that many feel New England will have, given the tight ends’ situations. If they get nine or more wins, then they will be right in the mix for the Super Bowl.”

        Kansas City Chiefs

        Win total: 7.5 (Over -115)
        Divisional odds: +800
        Super Bowl odds: +5,000

The Chiefs went through the ringer last year but have come out the other side looking like a different team in 2013. New QB Alex Smith and new head coach Andy Reid can breathe life into a franchise that still has a ton of talent – six Pro Bowlers last year.

Expert opinion: Michael Stewart, CarbonSports.ag, “The team we've seen the most ‘over’ money so far on are the Chiefs. After only winning two games last year, no way this team isn't going to see more success this season. New coach and new QB should bring a winning attitude. We opened (their win total at) 7 (Over -130) and are dealing 7.5 (-115) right now.”

Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Cubs
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs

                    DOING IT WAIN-WRIGHT

Adam Wainwright is 12-5 with a 2.30 ERA on the year. He has pitched at least seven innings in 15 of his 19 starts. The Cardinals’ starter has allowed 1 run or less in nine outings as well. Wainwright has faced the Cubs just once this season giving up 4 runs and seven hits in a loss back on June 18th. The righty has great control posting no more than 2 walks in a single outing. He has struck out 26 batters in his last four games and he hasn’t lost a game on the road since his first start of the season back on April 1st.

                    WOOD WOULD LIKE MORE WINS

Travis Wood is 6-6 with a 2.69 ERA despite the fact that he has thrown 17 quality starts this season. Wood has allowed 2 earned runs or less in three straight starts which all came against the AL West. He has faced the Cardinals twice this season going 1-1 overall while allowing 4 earned runs and 13 hits in those games. Wood has struck out four batters or more in 10 straight starts. Run support has been a bit of an issue for the southpaw as the Cubs have scored just 17 total runs in his last seven starts.

                    INJURY REPORT

The Cubs are a pretty healthy team; a lot of the names on their injury report aren’t that important. David DeJesus has a shoulder injury which should keep him out a month. Ryan Sweeney is out with a fractured a rib after running into a wall. Other than that, Chicago is without a few pitchers who weren’t really big contributors.

The Cardinals are a little more dinged up with Yadier Molina and Matt Holliday dealing with their own ailments. Out for the year is Jaime Garcia, Rafael Furcal and Jason Motte. Chris Carpenter will be back at some point in the second half as he is getting close to making rehab starts.

                    TRENDS

Cardinals are 11-5 in Wainwright’s last 16 Sunday starts
Cardinals are 11-5 Over in their last 16 Sunday games

Cubs are 6-14 in Wood’s last 20 home starts
Cubs are 50-22-4 Over in their last 76 during Game 4 of a series

                    HITTERS TO WATCH

                    Alfonso Soriano 11-for-42 vs. Wainwright
                    Starlin Castro 5-for-17 vs. Wainwright

                    Allen Craig 5-for-16 vs. Wood
                    Jon Jay 7-for-17 vs. Wood
