    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Ricky Nolasco won his Dodger debut 6-1 in Arizona, holding Snakes to four hits in seven innings. He also had two hits.

-- A's won 2-1 in Pittsburgh, as non-All-Star Grant Balfour got his 42nd consecutive save.

-- Pirates have lost six of last eight games, are example of a team that could use a show of support from its front office. Go buy a hitter, people.

-- Eric Stults threw a 122-pitch complete game as San Diego won 2-1 to end its 10-game losing streak. Jhoulys Chacin was a hard-luck loser.

-- Travis Wood has a 2.52 RA in his last four starts, but his 7-2 win over the Angels was his first win in his last seven starts.

-- Alex Rios had six hits and two stolen bases in Chicago's 11-4 win over the Tigers; Rios is first player in 20 years (Sammy Sosa) to do that.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.............

    13) Marco Scutaro made the All-Star Game this year for the first time; he is 37, the Giants are his sixth team. This guy has done nothing but help teams win for the last 12 years; it’ll be great fun to watch him get introduced next Tuesday before the All-Star Game. Will be quite a moment.

    12) Scutaro’s teammate Brandon Belt went 0-8 with five strikeouts in the Giants’ 16-inning loss Monday night; he was batting ahead of Buster Posey, who went 5-8.

    11) Hunter Pence was in an 0-24 slump before he hit a ball off the top of a 24-foot wall in right-center field Monday; the fence is over 400 feet from home plate, anywhere else in the big leagues, that was an easy home run, but in triples alley, it hit the top of the fence.

Quite a poke, especially for a righthanded hitter.

    10) Matt Garza was supposed to get traded to Texas, but he’s pitching so well, the Cubs might keep him.

    9) Mets’ Matt Harvey threw 121 pitches Monday, and has now tossed 123 innings this year. Last year, he threw 169 innings; teams don’t like a young guy to increase their innings by more than 20% from the previous year, so the Mets figure to shut him down when he gets to 200 innings. Not sure why they’d let him throw 121 pitches, but they did.

    8) Last year, Met catchers (Thole/Nickeas) hit five home runs all season; this year, Met catchers (Buck/Recker) already have 19 homers.

    7) In 2.5 seasons since leaving Tampa Bay, Carl Crawford has played in 217 out of a possible 453 games, scoring 123 runs while hitting .264, all while collecting a paltry $54,357,142. His career batting average is .292.

    6) There are 351 Division I college basketball teams; next season, 50 of the 351 will be playing in a different league than they did last season.

    5) Good rule change; college coaches are now allowed to work with their players two hours a week in their summer. This especially helps new coaches who don't really know their players yet.

    4) I am not making this up: next season, there will be colleges playing D-I basketball named College of Incarnate Word and Grand Canyon. CIW is in San Antonio, Grand Canyon is in Phoenix- their new coach is former NBA player Dan Majerle.

Grand Canyon once had a great player named Bayard Forrest who played in the NBA for two years; I never heard of CIW before Tuesday.

    3) Lakers were informed Tuesday that they were charged $29,259,739 in '12-13 luxury tax, for going over the salary cap. Yikes.

    2) If Steve Alford quits at UCLA in the next three years, he owes the school a $10.4M buyout; same thing if the school fires Alford- they would owe him $10.4M in severance pay. He ain't going anywhere.

    1) CBS Sports Network is going to have a 4-hour pregame show on NFL Sundays every week; Lord knows what Fox Sports 1 has planned for their launch in August, but the NFL gets a ton of airtime, even in the summer.

It would be great to see one of these networks devote a segment to picking winners, the way Jimmy the Greek used to do on CBS.

NCAAF Top 5: Worst home bets in college football

Friendly confines and hometown crowds haven’t helped these college football programs come though against the spread. They have constantly letdown bettors on their home turf over the past five seasons.

      Record between 2008-12.

Eastern Michigan Eagles (7-19 SU, 8-18 ATS)

Sports Illustrated recently released a list of the worst coaches in college football and Eagles head coach Ron English was among the bottom five. Eastern Michigan bettors wouldn’t deny that claim, having suffered through a 7-15 ATS mark in his time in Ypsilanti.

New Mexico State Aggies (7-22 SU, 9-20 ATS)

Aggies backers – if there are any left – are holding out hope that a move from the WAC to an independent will alter the program’s ineptitude against the spread. New Mexico State, which went 2-4 ATS inside Aggie Memorial Stadium in 2012, has a tough sked with Texas, UCLA, and Minnesota headlining.

Akron Zips (7-22 SU, 10-19 ATS)

The Zips had mirror-image home/away ATS records last season, going a profitable 5-1 ATS on the road but just 1-5 ATS at home. Akron was an underdog in all but two of those home games, including an embarrassing loss to UMass as a 14.5-point favorite.

South Florida Bulls (17-15 SU, 11-20-1 ATS)

Skip Holtz is gone and with him his 9-11 SU and 5-14-1 ATS record at home. The Bulls bring in Willie Taggart, who boasted an 8-9 ATS during his three seasons at Western Kentucky. The new Frankenstein AAC adds Memphis and SMU to USF home sked in 2013.

Louisville Cardinals (18-14 SU, 12-20 ATS)

The Cardinals enter 2013 as a dark-horse contender for the national title. Louisville has a solid chance of going undefeated, with a very easy home slate. Last season, UL went 3-4 ATS at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, and that was against much tougher competition. The expectations are high this year and the home pointspreads will reflect that.

NCAAF Games of the Year: Florida could be worn down vs. FSU

NCAA Week 14: Florida State Seminoles at Florida Gators (-2.5)

        Past history:
These teams have met in their regular season finale every year since 1977. They’ve split the last four meetings with the Gators winning in Tallahassee last year thanks to 24 unanswered points to open the fourth quarter.

        Early look at Florida State:
Following last year’s 12-2 campaign, the Seminoles are a legitimate national title contender in 2013 despite the loss of first-round draft choice E.J. Manuel at quarterback and six NFL draft choices from their defense. With arguably the best offensive line in college football, young QBs Jameis Winston or Jacob Coker will have the protection they need to get this offense clicking.

Early look at Florida: The Gators went 11-1 in the regular season last year before losing badly to Louisville in their bowl game. Junior QB Jeff Driskel needs to step up as the full-time starter this year if the Gators are going to match or exceed last year’s results, thanks to a positively brutal slate of opponents.

        Where this line will move:
It’s not easy to project where a line will be in late November – injuries, attrition and luck go a long way towards determining which teams will draw betting support at that stage of the season. That being said, Florida’s schedule is brutal compared to Florida State’s, which means the Gators are much more likely to come into this one with a weaker record and less market support. Don’t be surprised if the Seminoles take the money before kickoff.

Alouettes' home history tested versus Stampeders

If you're a believer in the Montreal Alouettes, you might want to load up your bankroll for Friday's matchup with the Calgary Stampeders.

Off a shocking home-opening loss to the Blue Bombers, Montreal will be in rebound mode this week. And if history is any indication, the Als should be in excellent position to do just that.

The Alouettes hadn’t lost a home opener since the 2007 season, when they fell 16-7 to Saskatchewan. They went on to lose their next home game that year as well but haven't dropped their first two home games in any season since.

In fact, since 2008, the Als haven't suffered a second home loss any earlier than September 18, nor have they dropped more than two regular season home games in any of their last five seasons, even going undefeated at home in one of those years (2009).

Obviously, things are a little different in Montreal these days, with Dan Hawkins taking over from long-time head coach Marc Trestman. It's far too early to hit the panic button. After all, the Als still sit in a three-way tie atop the East Division at 1-1.

Still, this is about as strong of a motivational spot as you'll see in Week 3 of the regular season.

The Als opened as high as 5-point home favorites but have been bet down to -2 after last week’s loss. The Stampeders are coming off a discouraging loss of their own in Saskatchewan. Montreal opened as -135 moneyline favorites for Week 3.

MLB teams helped and hurt by the All-Star break
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The All-Star break is a double-edged sword for MLB clubs, giving struggling teams a chance to regroup and acting as a rather large speed bump for those on a roll.

Here are three teams who could be hurt by the break and three which could benefit the most from some time off:

                        Hurt by the break

Tampa Bay Rays (50-40, +2.36 units)

Tampa Bay is finally gaining ground in the AL East, winning five straight and nine of its last 10 games heading into Tuesday. The Rays have benefited from some weak competition, facing the Astros, White Sox, and Twins in their final 14 games before the break. They hit the road for a 10-game divisional tour after the holiday, at Toronto, Boston and New York.

                        Oakland Athletics (53-37, +13.67 units)

The A’s normally wait until well after the All-Star break to really get rolling. But this year, Oakland started hot and leads the AL West by half a game heading into Tuesday. It’s won seven of its last 10 games, knocking off the Cubs, Royals and Pirates and closes with a three-game home set vs. Boston before the break. A six-game road trip awaits following the All-Star Game.

Los Angeles Dodgers (43-45, -10.83 units)

The Dodgers have come back from the dead in recent weeks, thanks to the hot-hitting of rookie Yasiel Puig and the return of Hanley Ramirez. Los Angeles has won seven of its last nine and has climbed to second in the NL West. While the downtime does allow Matt Kemp more time to heal from a shoulder ailment it’s a huge momentum stopper, with a six-game eastern road trip on deck after the break.

                        Helped by the break

San Francisco Giants (40-48, -13.99 units)

My how the mighty have fallen. The defending World Series champs are counting the days to the All-Star break after picking up just three wins in their last 17 games, sinking to the bottom of the NL West and the MLB money rankings. San Francisco closes out the first half of the sked on the road against the Padres. The break will allow the Giants to heal up and clear their heads before another strong second-half run.

                        Pittsburgh Pirates (53-35, +23.02 units)

Bettors were waiting for the other shoe to drop when it came to the Bucs’ hot 2013. The Pirates have lost three in a row and are just 5-5 in their last 10 games heading into Tuesday, watching the Cardinals jump them in the NL Central standings. Pittsburgh opens the post-break slate with a 10-game road swing to Cincinnati, Washington and Miami.

Toronto Blue Jays (43-45, -1.47 units)

The Jays are looking forward to a fresh start after the break. The first chunk of 2013 was up and down and leaves them at the bottom of the AL East. However, this team saw how good it could be with an 11-game winning streak and the break should help rush some key bats and pitchers back into action for a post-ASG push. Toronto can gain ground with a 10-game home stand following the hiatus.

Great road record helps Pirates top money standings
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An interesting interleague series is underway as the Oakland A's travel east and face the Pittsburgh Pirates this week.

What makes this interesting is that these are the top two teams in the money statistics. The Pittsburgh Pirates are head and shoulders above the rest of the league at $2,198 won per $100 bettor on the season. The A's are next at $1,467 won per $100 bettor. The third ranked team is the Boston the Red Sox and they are a full $1,311 behind the Pirates at $991.

Oakland won the first two games of the series, edging Pittsburgh 2-1 in each outing. The A's are +120 underdogs in the finale, facing Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano (-130) Wednesday.

Just taking the National League into account, the Pirates are a whopping $1,571 ahead of the second-place St. Louis Cardinals. So how are the Bucs so far ahead of the pack in money stats?

The Pirates put together a nine-game winning streak in June where they were dogs in five of those outings, which certainly aided their money total.

The Pirates have posted the third-best road record in the bigs at 24-19. Of those 24 road wins, they won 20 times as road dogs. They've also knocked off some of the top pitchers during their successful road trips. Felix Hernandez, Jered Weaver, Homer Bailey, Mat Latos and Matt Harvey are just a few of the Bucs' victims en route to some particularly handsome payouts as road underdogs.

Pittsburgh stays in the Steel City for a three-game set against the New York Mets before the All-Star break.

How SI's best and worst NCAAF coaches stack up for bettors

A recent article by Stewart Mandel over at Sports Illustrated looks at the 10 best and five worst head coaches in NCAA football.

We decided to have a look at said coaches and tally up their ATS and O/U records to see how each of these guys stack up.

Western Kentucky's Bobby Petrino was not included since he has not coached a game with the Hilltoppers.

Of the remaining nine coaches in SI's ten best, only LSU's Les Miles has a sub .500 ATS record.

Of SI's five worst coaches, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz is the only one with an ATS record above .500.

                            SI's 10 best:

                            Nick Saban, Alabama - 68-13 SU, 45-35 ATS, 36-40-3 O/U
                            Urban Meyer, Ohio State - 12-0 SU, 7-5 ATS, 6-6 O/U
                            Chris Petersen, Boise State - 84-8 SU, 49-38-2 ATS, 43-45-1 O/U
                            Gary Patterson, TCU - 116-36 SU, 77-69-1 ATS, 65-63-2 O/U
Bill Snyder, Kansas State (second tenure) - 33-17 SU, 31-18-1 ATS, 28-21 O/U
                            Les Miles, LSU - 85-21 SU, 49-53-2 ATS, 53-48-1 O/U
                            Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M - 11-2 SU, 8-5 ATS, 4-7 O/U
                            Bob Stoops, Oklahoma - 149-37 SU, 97-83-4 ATS, 80-83-1 O/U
Bobby Petrino, Western Kentucky - N/A
                            Art Briles, Baylor - 33-30 SU, 36-25 ATS, 36-23-1 O/U

                            SI's five worst (alphabetically):

                            Tim Beckman, Illinois - 2-10 SU, 3-9 ATS, 6-5 O/U
                            Ron English, Eastern Michigan - 10-38 SU, 20-28 ATS, 26-21 O/U
                            Kirk Ferentz, Iowa - 100-74 SU, 93-75-2 ATS, 64-76-5 O/U
                            Lane Kiffin, USC - 25-13 SU, 17-21 ATS, 18-20 O/U
                            Charlie Weis, Kansas - 1-11 SU, 4-7-1 ATS, 4-7 O/U
