    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some trends to look at for Week 1 NFL games.......

-- Ravens' last eight road openers: over is 6-1-1.

-- Browns are 1-13 in home openers, 1-7 vs spread in last eight, with seven of last te staying under the total.

-- Falcons lost five of last six road openers, with seven of last nine staying under the total.

-- Last 11 times Jets were favored in a home opener: 3-8 vs spread.

-- Eight of Chicago's last nine home openers stayed under total.

-- Last nine times Patriots were favored in road opener: 6-3 vs spread.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

    13) Fear factor is gone in Anaheim; Albert Pujols was walked intentionally 44 times in 2009, 38 times in ’10, and that was with Matt Holliday batting behind him. Last year, he was only walked intentionally 16 times and so far this year, only eight times. Pujols is playing hurt and his numbers are slipping and I’m playing against him in fantasy this week so he’ll probably be Player of the Week.

    12) Remember Greg Oden? He hasn’t played in a basketball game since 2009 (bad knees), but he’s still fairly young, and he’s still 7-feet tall, so he’s gotten multiple offers to try and play next year, including one from the Miami Heat. That’ll be an interesting story to follow.

    11) Bryce Harper missed 31 games for the Nationals; in his absence, Washington left fielders hit .200 with eight RBI. Not good.

    10) Rajon Rondo was the 21st player taken in the 2006 NBA Draft; the great majority of the 20 guys taken in front of him have long since been forgotten. Phoenix drafted Rondo, then traded him to Boston; whoops.

    9) Odd managing by Kirk Gibson in the 13th inning Monday night; we were saying this while the inning was going on, so its not second-guessing because Arizona lost the game. Diamondbacks led 4-3 in the 13th; Mets had tying run on second, one out, and feeble-hitting catcher John Buck (.175 since May 5) up, with the pitcher’s spot up next, and the Mets had no position players left to pinch-hit.

    8) For some unknown reason, Gibson walked Buck intentionally; the Mets send a starting pitcher up to sacrifice the two runners over, and then Gibson walks Omar Quintanilla (in fairness, he was 3-5) on purpose to face Andrew Brown with the bases loaded and two out.

Brown is a decent hitter; he gets a solid hit to left-center and the Mets won a game that a few minutes earlier looked lost.

    7) Over his last six starts, CC Sabathia has allowed six runs in innings 1-5 (total of 30 IP), but 16 runs in 14.1 IP from the 6th inning on.

    6) 161 former NFL players are currently assistant coaches in the league; that’s a little over five per team.

    5) Travel Channel has a TV show called Extreme Parking, which rivals Best Ever Funerals as a head scratcher of an idea for a television program.

    4) Do kids still learn to write cursive in grade school?

I stopped writing cursive years ago, except for signing my name. Wonder if they still teach that stuff.

    3) Cubs are 2-9 in Edwin Jackson’s starts when they score less than six runs. Chicago traded Scott Feldman to Baltimore and Carlos Marmol to the Dodgers Tuesday, as the first round of pre-deadline deals kicked off.

    2) All-Star break is a week later than usual this year; I try to fly to Las Vegas on the last day of the break every year, but I never checked MLB schedule and missed it by a week this year, so I’ll get out there the 11th instead of the 18th. Hope it cools down a little; was 115 in Las Vegas Tuesday.

    1) Last no-hitter in major leagues was Homer Bailey last September 28 in Pittsburgh; Bailey did it again Tuesday, allowing only one baserunner in a 3-0 no-hitter over the Giants. Last pitcher to throw the last no-hitter one year and the first no-hitter the next year was Nolan Ryan in 1974-75.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

      Lookahead spot

The Dallas Cowboys have had a hard time covering the spread at home since opening their $1 billion palace in 2009. America’s Team is a dismal 11-21 ATS at home in that span, including a 3-13 ATS record in Cowboys Stadium the last two seasons. And games like Week 13’s home date with the Oakland Raiders are a big reason why.

The Raiders come to “Jerry’s World” for Thursday Night Football in late November, sandwiched between a huge divisional road game versus the New York Giants in Week 12 and a Monday nighter at Chicago in Week 14, which will likely hold playoff implications. Oddsmakers have set Dallas as an 8.5-point home favorite hosting lowly Oakland, peaking past its AFC opponent and to an important Monday showdown in the Windy City.

      Letdown spot

The Pac-12 title hunt should be fun to watch this college football season, if most of the country can stay up that late. A number of teams are contending for the conference crown, including UCLA and Washington, who clash on a Friday night in Week 12. The Golden Nugget in Las Vegas opened the Bruins as 2-point home favorites and early money pushed that spread to -4.

Those two extra points could give Huskies backers some added value with Washington, which catches UCLA coming off an important road game in Arizona the week before. The Huskies have a veteran squad with 20 starters back from 2012, including QB Keith Price. The junior was overshadowed by a surplus of QB talent in the Pac-12 last year and is a sleeper to win the 2013 Heisman Trophy.

      Schedule spot

The Boston Red Sox had better pack the sun block with an approaching West Coast road swing. Boston is home to the San Diego Padres to start the week, finishing Thursday afternoon before jumping on a cross-country flight to play the Los Angeles Angels Friday. That three-game set with the Halos opens a 10-game, 10-day stretch that takes the team from L.A. to Seattle to Oakland before the All-Star break.

The Red Sox have yet to hit the left side of the country this season, only going as far as Texas for a three-game sweep at the hands of the Rangers in early May. Boston is 10-6 versus AL West foes so far this season but went just 8-24 against them in 2012. The BoSox visited those three teams over a nine-game, late-summer road trip last year, coming away with a 1-8 record.

NCAAF Top 5: Best road bets in college football

Covering the college football pointspread on the road either takes a ton of talent or for a bad team to be a little bit better than oddsmakers’ expectations. That’s what we’ve discovered after digging up the best NCAAF road bets over the past five seasons.

Records from 2008-2012. Includes away, neutral-site and bowl games.

Boise State Broncos (32-3 SU, 26-9 ATS)

Teams fear the “Smurf Turf” in Boise but bettors should have just as much respect for the Broncos when they hit the road. Since joining the Mountain West Conference, BSU is 13-1 SU and 10-4 ATS away from home. Boise State opens the schedule with a trip to Washington in Week 1 as a 3-point underdog and is a 3-point pup at BYU in Week 9.

Alabama Crimson Tide (29-4 SU, 24-9 ATS)

The Crimson Tide have lost just eight games over the past five years and have been especially stout on the road. Despite three national titles in the last four seasons and mountains of chalk, Alabama holds its value thanks to NFL-ready talent and Nick Saban’s unrelenting approach. According to the Golden Nuggets’ odds, Bama is an average favorite of 20 points for its five available road spreads.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (10-22 SU, 21-9-2 ATS)

You don’t have to compete for a BCS bowl to be a solid road bet. The Hilltoppers’ road record is proof of that. Western Kentucky went 6-1 ATS away from home last season, including a 35-0 beating at the hands of Alabama which stayed within the 38-point spread. WKU plays three of its first four games on the road in 2013.

UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (14-21 SU, 25-10 ATS)

UL Lafayette has undergone a transformation the past two seasons after struggling to gain traction in the Sun Belt between 2008-2010. The Ragin’ Cajuns won nine games while posting an 8-5 ATS mark in 2012. But even before then, ULL was making money on the road. In 2010, when the Cajuns won just three games, they still posted a profitable 6-1 ATS record on the road.

Stanford Cardinal (19-14 SU, 22-10-1 ATS)

The Cardinal seem to be a constant quiet contender in the Pac-12 and have been at their best in enemy territory. Stanford is 16-3-1 ATS on the road over the past three seasons – 82.5 percent – including a 5-1 ATS road mark last year. Stanford is a favorite in all but one of its four conference road tilts, getting one point at Southern Cal in Week 12.

        Other notables:

Bowling Green Falcons (17-18 SU, 23-11-1 ATS)
Ball State Cardinals (18-17 SU, 24-11 ATS)
Ohio State Buckeyes (18-9 SU, 18-8-1 ATS)

NFL Games of the Year: Seahawks big faves with Vikes in town

Odds are out for the biggest and best games of the upcoming NFL season. Covers Expert Will Rogers gives you his insight into some of these marquee matchups and predicts where the odds could move before kickoff.

          NFL Week 11:
Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks (-8.5)

          Past history:
Minnesota is 3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS, Under is 3-2 since 2003.

          Early look at the Vikings:
After a somewhat surprising 10-6 season in 2012, the Vikings are expected to regress in 2013. Cantor Gaming opened with the Vikes season wins total listed at 7 over -120. They bring back Christian Ponder as their starting quarterback, but Percy Harvin has moved on to Seattle. They will replace Harvin with veteran Greg Jennings, but things don't look too promising for an offense that ranked 31st in the NFL in passing yards in 2012.

An Early look at the Seahawks:
Seattle has a young and talented team that should only be better this year, with Russell Wilson having a year's experience under his belt, and Percy Harvin giving him a dangerous target. The Seahawks opening wins total was listed at 10 over -120 at Cantor and since then, money has come in on the over.

          Where this line will move:
A lot can happen in 11 weeks during the NFL season, and injuries could play a big role in where the line shifts. If the Vikings exceed expectations as they did last year, we could well see this line drop closer to 7.

WNBA under bettors winning at more than 59 percent

If you’ve been following the WNBA this summer – and let’s be honest, you haven’t – you’d recognize that more games are finishing under the total than not.

In fact, heading into Tuesday’s four-game slate, 59.32 percent of this season’s WNBA contests have stayed below the number (24-35-2 over/under). That percentage jumps to 64.7 over the last 30 days, with WNBA action posting an 18-33 over/under count in that span.

WNBA teams are scoring slightly less than last summer, with teams averaging 77.36 points per game compared to 77.53, but also the 2013 schedule is much more spread out due to the 2012 Summer Olympics conflicting with last season.

At this time last year, WNBA teams posted a 42-38 over/under record, playing 80 games through the first two months of the schedule, compared to only 61 heading into July this season.

The London Games put the WNBA on a month hiatus (July 14 to August 15) and had schedule makers compressing the first half of the calendar. That busier pace gave teams less time to rest, gameplan and practice, unlike 2013 when most teams have at least two full days off between contests.

Western Conference teams have the biggest lean toward the under this year. Out of six Western squads, just one – the Phoenix Mercury (6-5 over/under) – is over .500 for the over. Outside of Phoenix, the five other West clubs have a combined over/under count of 19-31-1.

The Eastern Conference, however, is home to the three best under plays: Indiana Fever (2-8 O/U), New York Liberty (2-6-1 O/U) and Connecticut Sun (2-6-1 O/U).

                        MLB

                        Wednesday, July 3

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over bettors look ahead to Bailey's next start after no-hitter
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Homer Bailey posted his second career no-hitter Tuesday night and recorded the majors’ 35th no-hit performance since 1999.

In that span, and excluding two collective no-hitters involving more than one pitcher (Houston 2003, Seattle 2012), starters coming off a no-hitter have provided solid value to over bettors, going 19-12-1 over/under – 60.9 percent for the over.

Last season, MLB fans witnessed seven no-hit performances, including a no-no from Bailey versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 28. Outside of the Mariners’ no-hit group effort on June 8, the other six starters went a collective 4-2 over/under in their following trip to the mound.

Those six pitchers also recorded a 3-3 win/loss mark in those efforts. Since 1999, pitchers coming off a no-hitter have gone 19-15 in their next appearance, lasting an average of just over 5 2/3 innings and boasting a collective ERA of 4.34 in those subsequent starts.

According to the Reds' regular rotations, Bailey should make his next start against Seattle in interleague action on July 7. Cincinnati is 7-9-1 over/under in the right-hander’s 17 appearances this season.
