    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Home teams are now 16-1 this season in Tim Hudson's starts.

-- The Mets owe Bobby Bonilla $1,193,248.20 every July 1 from now through 2035. Seriously.

-- Bryce Harper homered in his first AB back from his rehab stint, as the Nationals whacked Milwaukee 10-5.

-- Gerardo Parra knocked himself out trying to make a diving catch in right field Monday; it would've been an amazing catch. Diamondbacks wound up losing to the Mets 5-4 in 13 innings after some unusual Arizona strategy.

-- If you bet the Pirates every game this season, you'd be up 27.3 units.

-- Like those red jerseys the Blue Jays wear on Canada Day.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers to the families of the firefighters in Arizona who lost their lives over the weekend. Very difficult thing, very sad. God bless them.

    12) Chris Paul signed with the Clippers for five years, $107M, making him by far the highest paid general manager in sports history. You say he’s not the GM? Who fired Vinny Del Negro, the old coach? Who had to tacitly approve the new coach by re-signing to be the team’s star player? I rest my case.

    11) Workers at Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) went on strike this week, which will make it difficult for commuters to get to A’s games in Oakland; not sure if it affects Giant fans going to games in downtown San Francisco.

    10) Mets have been blathering about pitching prospect Zack Wheeler (they traded Carlos Beltran to get him) for two years now, but his performance this year raises eyebrows: 4-2, 3.93 in 13 AAA starts, with 27 walks in 68.2 IP. 1-1, 5.06 in three big league starts, with 24 baserunners allowed (10 walks) in only 16 innings. Not very impressive so far, despite the immense hype.

    9) Mets’ TV broadcasts were encouraging fans to vote for former #1 pick Brandon Nimmo to play in the Futures’ Game next weekend.

Nimmo was the #13 pick in the 2011 draft, one slot ahead of Miami’s Jose Fernandez (already in majors), Oakland’s Sonny Gray (#18, in AAA) and the Cardinals Kolton Wong (#22, already been in majors). Nimmo is still quite young; he is hitting .277 with one HR, 65 strikeouts in A ball.

    8) Amid all the talk of conference expansion in college sports, Yahoo’s Pat Forde points out that the last team to leave the Big Dozen conference was University of Chicago, back in 1946. Teams in that league and the SEC make serious money; ain’t no one leaving.

    7) Twitter was a-flutter Monday with rumors the Phoenix Coyotes are moving to Seattle next season, and will play in Key Arena.

    6) Dodgers are going to trade for Carlos Marmol, so Don Mattingly should go to a drug store and buy some more Rolaids.

    5) I watch a lot of CSI: Miami reruns on WE TV, which also has a program called Pregnant and Dating, a self-explanatory reality show. This program makes the Real Housewives series look like Masterpiece Theater.

One girl is dating this guy, she hasn’t told him she is pregnant, but there are TV cameras following them, so she obviously hasn’t told him the name of the show either. Getting harder to find an honest person these days.

    4) PGA Tour will adopt the ban on anchored putters effective in 2016, so if you’re using it now, you have 2.5 years before you’ve got to switch to non-anchored putting.

    3) UNLV coach Dave Rice, whose brother coaches Las Vegas high school power Bishop Gorman, added Findlay Prep coach Todd Simon as an assistant, replacing the departed Justin Hudson, who went back to San Diego State. Lot of good high school hoopers in Vegas; if the Rebels keep the right ones in town, they’ll be in top 25 for foreseeable future.

    2) Alabama spent $9M this offseason re-doing their football locker room, including a new state-of-the-art weight room. Its amazing the money these schools spend on facilties, because that’s what impresses players, and players win games, and wins bring in donors’ dollars.

    1) I really like John Kruk on ESPN, but he was saying Sunday night that fans come to the ballpark to see players play, not the manager manage. Well, in Baltimore, they’re coming to see a winning team, which is a direct result of their excellent manager, so to a degree, they’re coming to the ballpark to see Buck Showalter manage. O’s had a lot of these same players before Showalter was managing; the team sucked and the fans stayed home.

NCAAF Games of the Year: Don't second-guess Stanford-OSU line

Week 9: Stanford Cardinal at Oregon State Beavers (+3)

      Past history:
Stanford is 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS since 2010, with OSU managing to barely cover (at +4.5) in last year’s tight 27-23 Cardinal win at Palo Alto; 1-2 O/U in those games. The Beavers’ last series win was a 38-28 success at Corvallis in 2009.

      Early look at Stanford:
The Cardinal are getting plenty of attention as they look for a fourth straight BCS visit and perhaps their first title game invitation. The emergence of sophomore QB Kevin Hogan as an exciting playmaker late last season solved what had been a post-Andrew Luck dilemma for head coach David Shaw. Four starters also return along a punishing OL and a committee of capable RBs is expected to replace the graduated Stepfan Taylor. But Stanford’s recent renaissance has been fueled as much by a robust defense that returns eight starters and most key playmakers from last year’s platoon. The “Tree” is also 16-3-1 ATS on the road since 2010.

      Early look at Oregon State:
With the pressure reduced in Corvallis after OSU responded with a 9-4 mark in a must-win 2012 season for head coach Mike Riley, the Beavers address a pleasant QB dilemma after winning for both Sean Mannion and Cody Vaz last season. Key skill-position weapons WR Brandon Crooks and RB Storm Woods return, as do four OL starters. The defense also upgraded last fall and has an upper class-look about it, although veteran defensive coordinator Mark Banker is going to need JuCo transfers at DT to hit the ground running. Banker’s pass coverage should be even better this fall after the platoon became acclimated to nickel-and-dime looks on a regular basis in 2012. Also note, Riley’s 25-11-1 ATS mark as a dog since 2007.

      Where the line will move:
It is not unrealistic to project an unbeaten OSU entering this game, especially since the Beavers are likely to be favored in their first seven outings. Stanford, off a high-profile battle with UCLA the previous week and looking forward to the Oregon showdown 12 days hence, could be in a tricky sandwich spot in Corvallis and the Beavers should be in rabid revenge mode after they gave the game away in last year’s bitter loss on The Farm. While at first glance, this number might appear a bit light and offer some value on Stanford. If the season proceeds as expected, it would be no surprise if the price moves slightly in OSU’s direction.

Cardinals at Angels: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Angels (-125, 7.5)

Albert Pujols faces his former team for the first time when the Los Angeles Angels begin a three-game series against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. Pujols, who signed with the Angels as a free agent last season after playing 11 illustrious years in St. Louis, has four hits in his last 34 at-bats and is hitting .249 with 13 home runs and 49 RBIs. The Angels have won six in a row, while St. Louis has lost six of its last eight.

Angels outfielder Mike Trout missed his first game of the season Sunday with a sore hamstring, but he’s expected to return for Tuesday’s series opener. Trout will likely start in center field while J.B. Shuck starts in left field after Peter Bourjos was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a fractured right wrist. Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton is showing signs of breaking out of his season-long slump, batting .273 with five RBIs in his last five games.

                  TV:
10:05 p.m. ET, Fox Sports Midwest (St. Louis), Fox Sports West (Los Angeles)

                  PITCHING MATCHUP:
Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (10-2, 3.52 ERA) vs. Angels RH Jered Weaver (1-4, 4.15)

Lynn suffered his second loss last Wednesday against the Astros, allowing four runs in 7 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander has allowed four or more runs in three of his last four starts while posting a 5.84 ERA during that stretch. Lynn, who has never faced the Angels, is 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in seven career interleague games (two starts).

After three straight shaky outings, Weaver pitched seven innings of one-run ball against the Tigers last Thursday. “We’re confident that he’s going to pitch more like he did today than the way he has in a couple of his last starts,” manager Mike Scioscia told reporters. The 30-year-old Weaver has a 13-4 record with a 2.61 ERA in interleague play.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Angels are 0-4 in their last four interleague games.
                  * Under is 5-0 in Weaver’s last five interleague starts.
                  * Under is 5-1 in Cardinals’ last six vs. a team with a losing record.

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. Cardinals 1B Matt Adams is expected to return to the starting lineup Tuesday after missing Sunday’s contest with food poisoning.

                  2. Angels 2B Howie Kendrick is hitting .356 (58-for-163) since May 14.

                  3. The Cardinals are 18-9 in the first game of a series.

Pirates best bet in baseball; riding nine-game winning streak
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been the best bet in baseball for most of the season, but they’ve been especially profitable over the past nine games.

The Pirates have won nine consecutive contests and boast the best record in baseball (51-30).

The Bucs have been underdogs in five of the nine games and any $100 bettor would be up a cool $1,000.79 if they had wagered on each game of the streak.

The Pirates open a three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies at PNC Park on Tuesday. Pittsburgh is 3-1 against the Phillies so far this campaign and is a -159 favorite at BetOnline for the opener of the set.

Pirates bettors are up a league-high 27.30 units - by far the most profitable team in the bigs

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jays, Pirates, Padres big movers in MLB futures
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s hard to believe but we’re already halfway through the MLB season as the calendar flips to July.

Here are three teams that have drastically improved their futures odds with their stellar play in the last month.

                      Pittsburgh Pirates

                      Start of June: 25/1
                      Now: 15/1

The Pirates opened the 2013 campaign with 60-1 odds to win the World Series and their odds have improved slowly throughout the first half of the season. Pittsburgh caught fire in the month of June, posting a 17-9 record. The Bucs are riding a nine-game winning streak into a three-game set with the Philadelphia Philles beginning Tuesday.

                      Toronto Blue Jays

                      Start of June: 100/1
                      Now: 30/1

Much like the Pirates, the Blue Jays used a long winning streak to increase their stock in June. Toronto ripped off 11 straight wins throughout the middle of the month to get back to the .500 mark and become playoff contenders. Toronto was being dealt as high as 12-1 at some books before it cooled off towards the end of June.

                      San Diego Padres

                      Start of June: 50/1
                      Now: 30/1

The Padres are quietly putting together a very impressive campaign. The Friars opened the season with 100-1 odds to win the World Series and have peaked at 30-1 as of July 1. San Diego enters play Monday only 2.5 games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the NL West lead.

Marlins a good catch for bettors in June
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Miami Marlins and their backers had a fairly successful month of June as the squad posted a 15-10 record for the month and turned a profit for bettors.

Any $100 bettor would be up $1,033.54 if they had wagered on the Marlins in each of their June games.

The Marlins closed the month winning five of six and head into July on the heels of a Jeff Mathis walk-off grand slam to beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 Sunday.

Some solid pitching was key to the Marlins' successful June. The Miami staff ranked No. 5 in the National League with a 3.51 ERA for the month.
