    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Why doesn't the NBA announce trades as they happen during the draft? Do they want fans/media to be confused?

-- Odd Fact of Day: Head football coaches of both Army, Navy went to college at Hawai'i.

-- Of 125 I-A head football coaches, 62.4% played in Div I-A. 10 didn't play college football. 37 others played non Division-1A football.

-- You wonder if Allen Crabbe being pushed by his coach during a game to get him to play harder hurt his status in the draft.

-- Heat President Pat Riley owns the copyright to the term three-peat, back from when he coached the Lakers.

-- Rough day for ESPN; Bill Raftery jumped to FOX Sports1, where he'll work on the #1 Big East team; also, with all the basketball expertise ESPN employs, how do they put wiseguy Bill Simmons on the panel? Oy.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Idle thoughts with weekend here.......

    13) You can wager on which teams will meet in the Super Bowl, like a quinella at the dog track; lowest price is 49ers-Broncos (20-1).

    12) If Alex Rodriguez is deemed “medically unfit to play”, Bronx Bombers can recoup 80% of his salary via insurance. 80% of $28M is $22.4M they would get back per year for the rest of his hideous contract, which obviously would be a bad hit for the insurance company. Wonder what poor bastards they’ll pass those costs on to?

    11) Speaking of ARod’s contract and the rest of the $100M disabled list in the Bronx, how does GM Brian Cashman keep his job? They’ve won one World Series since 2000, and the 2000 team had the Bombers’ worst regular season record in the last twenty years.

    10) Tough travel for the Mets this week, who originally had two off days scheduled; they played in Chicago Tuesday-Wednesday, had a 6pm game in Denver Thursday, then fly home and play the Nationals at home this weekend, with a 1:10 game Saturday.

    9) Mets’ pitching prospect Zach Wheeler has been less than impressive this season, both in AAA/majors; word comes out now that he may tip his pitches. If he fixes that, his performance should improve a lot.

    8) If anyone from DirecTV is reading this, could we please get the Pac-12 Network for this season? Please? Good grief, there are enough hideous channels that I’ll never watch. I’d even gladly trade the Big Ten Network for the Pac-12 Network. For what I pay for my service, I should get the channels I want, and yes, I’m whining.

    7) Wow, Auburn won a national championship in 2010, then went 11-14 the last two years, got smoked 42-14/49-0 by Alabama and now they have a new coach already. 2010 they won the national title; that doesn’t even buy a coach three more years. Amazing the world we live in.

    6) Lookalikes: the short lawyer on TNT’s Franklin & Bash and Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks.

    5) Ben McLemore played one year at Kansas, then changed agents before the draft; if I were an NBA that was thinking of drafting him, this would worry me. Not a lot of stability there; stability is a good thing.

    4) Donald Trump built a golf course in Scotland, and is now calling it “…..the best golf course in the world.” Mr Trump actually ran for President; imagine if he had won? Humility might get stricken from the dictionary.

    3) Why can’t gay people get married? Isn’t this a free country? Why should some people’s beliefs be imposed on other people? If it makes them happy and doesn’t hurt anyone, so what? Sure as hell I wouldn't want the beliefs of other people imposed on me.

    2) Dwight Howard doesn’t like Mike D’Antoni’s system? Of course not, its built for players with basketball skills, like running, passing, teamwork and shooting, none of which are Howard’s strengths.

    1) One thing I neglected to say earlier this week, with regards to the Aaron Hernandez situation: People are innocent until proven guilty; now it looks very bad for him, as news of the evidence and his previous history leaks out, but there is a process in the legal system, so lets see it play out.

Fastest and slowest starters to the NFL betting season

Week 1 of the NFL schedule is quickly approaching and teams and coaches are fine-tuning their games, looking to peak just before the season opener.

Some NFL teams have been consistent strong starters while others have stumbled out of the gate each year. Here are the best and worst bets in the first three games of the season over the past three years:

      Quickest starters

Houston Texans (7-2 SU, 7-2 ATS over first three games since 2010)

The Texans were a profitable 3-0 SU and ATS through the first three weeks of the 2012 schedule, taking cake-walk wins over Jacksonville and Miami before holding off the Broncos in Denver in Week 3. This season, Houston plays two of its first three contests on the road – at San Diego on Monday night in Week 1(-3) and at Baltimore in Week 3 (+2.5) – bookending a home date with Tennessee in Week 2 (-7.5).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-4 SU, 7-2 ATS over first three games since 2010)

The Bucs started 1-2 SU last year but covered in all three of those games, prompting a profitable year for Tampa Bay bettors, who finished 10-5-1 ATS. The Buccaneers were underdogs in losses at New York and Dallas in Weeks 2 and 3 and opened the schedule with a home win over Carolina. Tampa Bay kicks off 2013 with a road trip to play the Jets (-2.5), at home to the Saints in Week 2 (+1.5) and at New England in Week 3 (+7.5).

Atlanta Falcons (6-3 SU, 6-3 ATS over first three games since 2010)

The Falcons are classic fast starters but have fallen on their faces at the end of the season and playoffs. Atlanta was 3-0 SU and ATS to open 2012 thanks to some short spreads, winning at Kansas City as a 1-point fave, beating Denver at home as 3-point chalk and knocking off the Bolts on the road as a field-goal dog. The Falcons’ first three weeks of 2013 feature an opener at New Orleans (+2.5), a home game vs. St. Louis (-7), and a visit to Miami in Week 3 (+1).

      Slowest starters

Philadelphia Eagles (5-4 SU, 2-7 ATS over first three games since 2010)

Philadelphia’s struggles in 2012 were well documented by the media, going 2-1 SU and 0-3 ATS versus the likes of Cleveland, Baltimore and Arizona in the first three weeks. The Eagles only managed to come through for bettors three times all season. This time around, Philly visits Washington (+4.5) on Monday night in Week 1 then is back home to host San Diego (-2.5) and Kansas City (-3) on Thursday Night Football. With a new head coach and system in place, the Eagles could be doomed for another slow start.

Denver Broncos (3-6 SU, 3-6 ATS over first three games since 2010)

Even with Peyton Manning under center, the Broncos couldn’t avoid a third straight 1-2 SU and ATS start to the season in 2012. Denver needed an epic comeback versus Pittsburgh in Week 1, and lost at Atlanta and vs. Houston the following weeks. Peyton & Co. have another tough go-around to open 2013, hosting Baltimore in the Thursday night opener (-8.5), visiting the Giants for the “Manning Bowl” in Week 2 (-1) and welcoming Oakland to Mile High on Monday night in Week 3 (-13.5). That’s a lot of chalk for Broncos bettors to deal with.

New Orleans Saints (4-5 SU, 3-6 ATS over first three games since 2010)

New Orleans is putting 2012 in the rearview, opening the schedule in the shadow of “Bounty Gate” with a 0-3 SU and ATS blemish. The Saints didn’t have the biggest uphill climb either, losing to Washington, Carolina and Kansas City. Sean Peyton is back on the sideline and game planning for a Week 1 home showdown with Atlanta (-2.5), a trip to Tampa Bay in Week 2 (-1.5), and a home date vs. Arizona in Week 3 (-7.5). Books are expecting big things in the Big East this year.

      Other notables:

Carolina Panthers (2-7 SU, 3-6 ATS)
San Diego Chargers (5-4 SU, 3-6 ATS)
      San Francisco 49ers (4-5 SU, 5-3-1 ATS)
Cincinnati Bengals (5-4 SU, 5-3-1 ATS)

        Week 1

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CFL doubleheader: Tiger-Cats at Argos, Lions at Stamps
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Toronto Argonauts (-3, 54.5)

The Toronto Argonauts will look to start their quest for a repeat as Grey Cup champions on the right note when they host the provincial rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday. Toronto defeated the Calgary Stampeders 35-22 at home for its league-record 16th title despite posting a 9-9 record during the regular season. The Tiger-Cats struggled mightily on defence last season, finishing 6-12 in large part because they allowed a league-worst 32 points per game.

The Argonauts defeated Hamilton in three of four meetings last year, including both games at Rogers Centre. The Tiger-Cats hired coach Kent Austin, who led the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a Grey Cup championship in 2007 and spent the last three seasons coaching at Cornell University. Austin was 11-19 in his three seasons with the Big Red. Hamilton is vying for its first winning season since 2004, when it finished 9-8-1.

        TV:
        7 p.m. ET, TSN

        ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS:
In an effort to improve their defence, the Tiger-Cats drafted defensive tackle Linden Gaydosh with the first overall pick in this year’s draft. Gaydosh, however, decided to sign with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers instead. Veteran quarterback Henry Burris threw for 43 touchdowns and a career-high 5,367 yards last year in his first season with Hamilton. The 38-year-old looked strong in the preseason, completing 13 of 17 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns in a 52-0 rout of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

        ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS:
Weeks after signing quarterback Ricky Ray to an extension that carries through 2015, Toronto reached an agreement with last year’s Most Outstanding Player Chad Owens for two more years. The move helps secure the offence that helped the Argonauts to their first Grey Cup in eight seasons. Toronto cut veteran defensive tackle Kevin Huntley last week, showing confidence in linebackers Robert McCune and Marcus Ball. McCune registered 86 tackles and Ball added 73 last season.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
        * Tiger-Cats are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
        * Argonauts are 5-2 ATS in their last seven Week 1 game.

        EXTRA POINTS

        1. Members of last year’s Argonauts squad will receive their championship rings prior to the start of the game.

        2. Owens set the professional football record for all-purpose yards last season, finishing with 3,863.

        3. The Tiger-Cats will open their season at home against Edmonton on July 7. They will play in Guelph, Ont., while their new stadium is under construction.

BC Lions at Calgary Stampeders (-3, 51.5)

The BC Lions finished last season with a league-best 13-5 record and looked poised to repeat as Grey Cup champions, only to drop a 34-29 decision to the Calgary Stampeders in the West Division final. The Lions will have a chance to avenge that loss as they open their season with a visit to Calgary on Friday. The Stampeders suffered a 35-22 setback to the Toronto Argonauts in the Grey Cup final and enter their sixth campaign with coach John Hufnagel, who sports a 59-30-1 regular-season record.

The Lions defeated Calgary twice in the regular season last year, but the Stampeders won 41-21 at home in the last meeting before the West final. That victory marked the return of injured Calgary quarterback Drew Tate, but veteran Kevin Glenn would start both the West final and the Grey Cup. A healthy Tate is expected to guide the Stampeders in 2013, while BC signed quarterback Travis Lulay to a two-year extension after he recorded his first season with a passer rating over 100 (100.7) in his fourth year with the squad.

        TV:
        10 p.m. ET, TSN

        ABOUT THE LIONS:
Defence was key for BC last year, as the team finished with 354 points allowed - 55 fewer than any other team in the league. Linebacker Adam Bighill registered 104 tackles, nine sacks and four interceptions while defensive end Keron Williams led the league with 12 sacks. Veteran Paul McCallum recorded a league-high 187 kicking points last year. The Lions traded slotback Geroy Simon, the league’s all-time receiving leader, to Saskatchewan for wide receiver Justin Harper and a third-round pick in 2014.

        ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS:
Jon Cornish led the league in rushing last year with 1,457 yards - a record for a non-import player - and won the award for Most Outstanding Canadian. Calgary’s offence should run smoothly with Tate and Cornish in the backfield, while its defence - led by linebacker Charleston Hughes (11 sacks) - remains largely intact. The Stampeders added defensive tackle Kevin Huntley to their practice roster less than a week after he was cut by the Toronto Argonauts. Huntley played against the Stampeders in last year’s Grey Cup final.

        TRENDS:

        * Lions are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games.
        * Under is 14-2 in Lions’ last 16 road games.
        * Lions are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings in Calgary.

        EXTRA POINTS

        1. The Lions were 5-4 away from BC Place last year. Calgary finished 7-2 at home.

        2. Despite widespread flooding in Calgary last week, McMahon Stadium escaped damage and will be ready to host Friday’s contest.

        3. The Lions defeated the Stampeders 29-27 in preseason action.

Pirates bettors turning huge profits during six-game winning streak
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been the best bet in baseball for most of the season, but they’ve been especially profitable over the past week.

The Pirates have won six straight games to rise to the top of the NL Central standings entering play Thursday.

The Bucs have been underdogs in five of the six contests and any $100 bettor would be up a cool $828.64 if they had wagered on each game of the streak.

Pittsburgh opens a six-game homestand against the Milwaukee Brewers Friday. The Brew Crew is in town for three games before the Philadelphia Phillies roll into PNC Park for a three-game set. The Bucs have a 6-4 record against the Brewers this season and are 3-1 against the Phillies in 2013.

Pirates bettors are up a league-high 24.30 units so far this campaign.

Dodgers no longer worst bet in MLB after six-game run
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ six-game winning streak has pulled them from the bottom of the MLB money rankings, making $525.91 for $100 bettors during this run.

The Dodgers picked up win No. 6 with a 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies as -185 home favorites Thursday. They are outscoring opponents 28-14 during this stretch and are currently -14.61 units on the season after sitting at -21.07 units just one week ago.

Yasiel Puig continues to be the catalyst for L.A.’s sudden turnaround. The rookie outfielder gave the Dodgers the win versus Philadelphia with a two-run single in the seventh inning Thursday and is hitting .427 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs in just 23 games with the big-league club.

The Dodgers are -144 home favorites versus Philadelphia Friday night. Los Angeles sends left-hander Chris Capuano to the mound (2-4, 4.09 ERA) while the Phillies counter with southpaw John Lannan (0-2, 5.84 ERA). Friday’s total is set at eight runs.

The Dodgers have won six of the last eight meetings between these clubs..

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CFL leans toward under in Week 1 over past six seasons
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Montreal Alouettes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers went against the Week 1 grain in their CFL season opener Thursday night, playing over the 49.5-point total with a 39-33 Montreal win at Investors Group Field.

CFL teams had produced an 8-16 over/under record in Week 1 of the schedule since 2007 heading into 2013, including a 1-3 over/under count in the opening slate of the 2012 season.

Some point to rust of the offseason or new offensive players and coaches still fine tuning their schemes and timing as the reason for this one-sided result, which has paid off for under bettors at a profitable 66.6 percent rate.

The Toronto Argonauts, the defending Grey Cup champions, have been the best under bet in Week 1 during that span, staying below the number in all six games since 2007. The Calgary Stampeders are the second most profitable under play in Week 1, with a 1-5 over/under count in the opener over the past six seasons.

Both Toronto and Calgary are in action Friday night. The Argos open the schedule with a 54.5-point total hosting the Hamilton TiCats (2-4 O/U in Week 1 since 2007) while the Stampeders welcome the BC Lions (2-4 O/U in Week 1 since 2007) to McMahon Stadium with the number sitting at 51.5 points.

Only one team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, have leaned toward the over more in Week 1 since 2007 heading into this season. They boast a 4-2 over/under count over their past six season debuts and visit the Edmonton Eskimos (2-4 O/U in Week 1 since 2007) with the total at 49 points Saturday. However, these heated rivals have stayed under the number in 14 of their last 18 head-to-head meetings.

Thursday’s season-opening result bumped Montreal to 4-3 over/under in Week 1 over the past six seasons while Winnipeg moved to 3-4 over/under in that same situation.

NASCAR betting: Quaker State 400 preview

Who will be victorious in the third NASCAR Sprint Cup Race at Kentucky Speedway, which has a reputation for being a "rough track" on Sunday?

                            Here’s our betting preview:

                            Favorite: Kyle Busch (7-1)

Busch has one win, one top-five and two top-10s in two starts at Kentucky Speedway. There have been 534 laps circled across the two races held at Kentucky and KB has led 45.5 percent of them

                            Live dog: Brad Keselowski (12-1)

Keselowski won last year's race at Kentucky with a backup car. He took a gambled on fuel late in the race to rack up his third win of the 2012 season. He ranks second, out of 45 drivers with an average place of 3.8 at Kentucky.

                            Long shot: Ryan Newman (80-1)

Newman finished fourth in the 2011 race at Kentucky but crashed with 59 laps to go last year after qualifying fifth. He has two top-10 finishes in his last five Sprint Cup races and has great value at 80-1 this week.

                            Key stat:
Ten different drivers have posted top-10 victories at Kentucky in just two Sprint Cup races.

                            Notable quotable:

"I love how much character that racetrack has. It's so rough. The groove moves around, and you really are just trying to dodge the big swells and bumps to find grip for your race car.” –Jimmie Johnson on racing Kentucky Speedway
