    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Larry Bird returned to the Pacers as team president, good news for the Pacers, especially since Donnie Walsh is staying on as a consultant.

-- Mark Teixeira is having wrist surgery, is out for the season.

-- Dodgers won their last five games, are only six games out of first place.

-- Angels won their last eight games against Detroit.

-- Bruins' Patrice Bergeron has been in the hospital since Game 6; he has a punctured lung, in addition to his shoulder/rib injuries.

-- Pirates/Cardinals are both 48-30, the best record in baseball.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer day...........

    13) Oregon Ducks pretty much got slapped on the wrist for NCAA violations, losing only one scholarship over the next three years; they had official visits reduced from 56 to 37, which would be somewhat significant if people followed the rules, but there are ways to get around that one—just have runners pay for kids’ “unofficial” visits. Has to be mostly a happy day in Eugene- they didn’t lose any bowl eligibility.

    12) Stupid Ruling of the Day: NCAA gave Chip Kelly an 18-month show-cause order, meaning he can’t coach in college for the next two seasons. He just signed on with the Philly Eagles for $6.5M a year; don’t think he’ll be looking for a college job anytime soon, no matter what.

Much like Pete Carroll at USC, Kelly got out of the town just before the NCAA’s posse came looking for him.

    11) I like to use W-L record in games decided by 3+ runs as a measure of a baseball team’s power- sometimes teams get a lot of breaks, and those teams generally have great records in close (1-2 run) games, but seldom dominate opponents. This year, LA Dodgers are just 13-23 in games decided by 3+ runs; the Cardinals are 31-11.

    11) Arizona (27-21) has played the most games decided by 1-2 runs.

    10) Red Sox are 4-6 in Ryan Dempster’s last ten starts; in the four wins, they scored 12-17-10-11 runs. Boston is 2-9 in Dempster's starts when they score less than seven runs.

    9) Jim Boeheim got hired as head coach at Syracuse in 1976, making him the only active D-I coach in the country who was hired at his current job before 1980.

    8) Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer is the only D-I football coach who was hired at his current job before 1990; only five of the 125 active D-I coaches were hired at their current job before 2000.

    7) JR Smith opted out of his contract, am curious to see where he lands; whoever his new coach is better be tolerant of a player who can score, but takes very difficult shots.

    6) If you have Aaron Hernandez on your fantasy football team, feel free to release him now. Sounds like he ain’t going anywhere for a while.

    5) The jersey Lebron James wore in Game 2 of the Finals this month went for $37,470 at an NBA auction for charity.

    4) From 2003-2006, front-row tickets for Boston Bruin games jumped from $73 a game to $150; so if you have two season tickets for an 80-game season (40 home games), that’s $12,000 a pop, not counting playoffs, and Bruins make the playoffs every year (its not that hard).

Pretty good chunk of change, $12,000+ a year for hockey tickets.

    3) From 2005-12, Bronx Bombers were 464-262 (.639) in games decided by 3+ runs, they were a dominant/bully team- they were 281-263 (.526) in games decided by 1-2 runs.

Their fans are entitled, spoiled humans who expect to show up and see their team roll over opponents with mostly far less resources.

    2) This year, with many of their aging stars injured, Bronx is 25-13 (.658) in close games, just 18-21 (.462) in games decided by 3+ runs; they’re a spunkier team that’s had to fight for most every win, but for some reason, their TV ratings are down 38%.

Guess their entitled, spoiled fans don’t appreciate a gritty team that has to work for wins, instead of just buying them.

    1) Will watch draft tonight rooting hard for Dwayne Davis of Southern Miss to get picked up by an NBA team; he played AAU ball for a friend of mine in Philadelphia and has more overcome adversity in his life than many of us have ever known.

He had a terrific senior year in Hattiesburg; we wish him well. Some NBA team is going to be very glad they picked him up.

NCAAF Games of the Year: K-State out for revenge vs. Baylor

Odds are out for the biggest games of the college football season. Covers Expert Bruce Marshall gives you his insight into some of the marquee matchups and predicts where the odds could move before kickoff.

NCAAF Week 7: Saturday, October 12: Baylor (+5) at Kansas State

Past history: Baylor is 2-1 SU but 1-2 ATS in three meetings since 2010, with the home team winning SU in each and the underdog covering in each. All three games have gone “over” as well. The Bears knocked K-State out of a shot at the BCS title game with a 52-24 upset win last November 17 at Waco.

      Early look at Baylor:
The Bears barely skipped a beat post-RG III in 2012 behind QB Nick Florence, who had filled in for an injured Griffin previously. Now it’s up to junior QB Bryce Perry, who has passed the ball only 14 times in limited previous work. A completely rebuilt OL must gel quickly, but by now it is apparent that HC Art Briles knows what to do with his offenses, and homerun RB Lache Seastrunk is getting peripheral Heisman mention. The stop unit leaked badly last season when ranking 119th nationally, but several playmakers return (especially at the LB spots) for defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, whose platoon did manage to rise to the occasion in late-season wins over K-State, Oklahoma State, and then UCLA in the Holiday Bowl.

      Early look at Kansas State:
Underestimate veteran HC Bill Snyder at your risk. Replacing do-everything QB Collin Klein would seem to be a tall order, but Snyder and offensive coordinators Del Miller & Dana Dimel think they have two viable candidates in soph Daniel Sams and former juco star Jake Waters. The entire starting OL returns in tact as do most of the skill-position weapons, including RB John Hubert & WR Tyler Lockett. More concerns rest with a “D” that must replace nine starters, but Snyder’s stop units have always been functional, and SS Ty Zimmerman is an established playmaker.

      Where the line will move:
Both have offered plenty of spread value lately (Baylor 13-4 vs. line last 17 since late 2011, Snyder’s K-State 18-8 the past two seasons), so those trends that might impact movement vs. other foes and likely nullify one another in this game. While the Wildcat “revenge” factor could influence the price, a more telling factor will be how quickly the new QBs on each side are able to get comfy, which are more likely to be reflected in any price adjustments for this mid-October game.

Alouettes at Blue Bombers: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Alouettes at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+4, 51)

Dan Hawkins has some big shoes to fill. The new coach of the Montreal Alouettes will try to continue the success his team enjoyed under Marc Trestman when the Alouettes open the CFL season at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday. Trestman, who led Montreal to a 59-31 regular-season record and two Grey Cup wins in five campaigns, is now coaching the NFL’s Chicago Bears. Hawkins was unable to guide the Alouettes to victory in either of their preseason games, but will have a chance for his first CFL triumph against last year's weakest team in the East Division.

Following an appearance in the 99th Grey Cup, Winnipeg scored a league-low 376 points to finish the 2012 season with a 6-12 mark. The Blue Bombers’ offence did not fare any better in the preseason, managing just two field goals while allowing a total of 76 points in two contests. Winnipeg has reason for optimism - including a new stadium and the return of quarterback Buck Pierce, who missed most of last season due to multiple injuries. Pierce is the only quarterback on the roster with substantial CFL experience - but the Blue Bombers' preseason struggles are a familiar refrain.

Home underdogs were a profitable play in the CFL last season. Host teams getting the points went 11-9 SU but 14-6 ATS in 2012. Oddsmakers have tabbed the Blue Bombers as 4-point home underdogs for Thursday's Week 1 opener.

        TV:
        9 p.m. ET, TSN

        ABOUT THE ALOUETTES:
QB Anthony Calvillo is returning for his 20th CFL season. The 40-year-old threw for more than 5,000 yards three times during Trestman’s tenure. With his receiving corps - led by veterans Jamel Richardson and S.J. Green - largely intact, and RB Brandon Whitaker set to return from last year’s season-ending knee injury, Calvillo has all the tools at his disposal for another successful season.

        ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS:
Construction delays pushed the opening of Investors Group Field - Winnipeg’s new home - back a full year, but the 33,422-seat stadium is finally ready to replace Canad Inns Stadium, the home of the Blue Bombers for the last 60 seasons. The change of scenery might do well for a Winnipeg squad that is largely unchanged from last year. The Blue Bombers allowed 531 points in 2012 and will have to be stronger on defence as long as their offensive struggles continue.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Winnipeg.
        * Alouettes are 2-7 ATS in their last nine meetings.
        * Alouettes are 1-5 ATS in their last six meetings in Winnipeg.
        * Over is 21-8 in Alouettes last 29 road games.

        EXTRA POINTS:

        1. Montreal posted a losing record on the road (4-5) in each of its last two seasons.

        2. Despite Grey Cup appearances in 1992, 1993, 2001, 2007 and 2011, the Blue Bombers have not won a championship since 1990 - the longest drought in the CFL.

        3. Calvillo holds the professional football record for career passing yards with 78,494 and has thrown a record 449 touchdown passes.

Trend says CFL champs are Week 1 fade bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the Canadian Football League season kicking off Thursday June 27, we decided to take a look at the past 10 seasons to see how the defending Grey Cup champion and runner up fared in the opening week of the regular season.

It would appear that squads coming off of a Grey Cup winning campaign tend to carry a bit of a hangover into Week 1. The champs are 5-5 SU (straight up) but just 2-7-1 ATS (against the spread) in the opening week of their Cup-defending season.

The runners up fare a bit better ATS going 5-5 in the opening week.

As for totals, the under seems to be the trend to open the season. Both the champs and their Grey Cup victims post an O/U record of 3-7 in the opening week. A little gun-shy perhaps in the normally high-scoring game style of football north of the border.

Here is a look back at the past 10 seasons with the defending Grey Cup champs and the runners up.

        Grey Cup champions: 5-5 SU, 2-7-1ATS, 3-7 O/U
        Runners up: 5-5 SU, 5-5 ATS, 3-7 O/U

The Toronto Argonauts are the defending Grey Cup champions and are 4.5-point faves at home against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 1. The total is currently 55.

The Calgary Stampeders took the loss in last year's Grey Cup and open the season as 3-point home favorites against the B.C. Lions. The total is currently 52.
