CFL Betting Notes - Week 4

      July 16, 2013

Looking back at Week 3 in the CFL, a couple of underdogs started things off with a straight up win on the road and a road favorite closed things out with a dominating win. First, Saskatchewan remained the only undefeated team in the league with a 39-28 victory over Toronto as a two-point underdog this past Thursday. On Friday, Calgary went on the road to Montreal as a two-point underdog and came away with a 22-14 win.

Saturday’s double-header started off with Winnipeg dropping a 25-20 decision against Hamilton, but covering against the spread as a 5 ½-point underdog on the road. British Columbia improved to 2-1 on the year with a 17-3 pasting of Edmonton as a 3 ½-point road favorite.

The following is a brief betting preview for Week 4 of the CFL regular season with the opening pointspread and ‘over/under’ lines provided by TopBet.

      Friday, July 19

Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers
      Point-spread: Pick ‘em
      Total: 53

Toronto has now lost its last two games both SU and ATS after opening the season with a 39-34 victory over Hamilton as a 3 ½-point home favorite. The total has gone OVER in two of the three games. Quarterback Ricky Ray turned in another strong performance despite last Thursday’s loss with 334 passing yards and two touchdowns while completing 27 of his 37 attempts.

The Blue Bombers have also dropped two of their first three games SU but they are 2-1 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in their last two games. Buck Pierce is right behind Ray in total passing yards this season with 701, which is the third-most in the CFL. Winnipeg is averaging 24 points a game.

The Argonauts have gotten the best of this East Division rivalry in recent years with 4-1 record both SU and ATS in the last five meetings. The total has gone OVER in four of the last six games between the two. The road team has a slight 6-4 SU edge in the last 10 meetings and is 4-0 ATS in the last four.

      Saturday, July 20

      Montreal Alouettes at Calgary Stampeders
      Point-spread: Calgary -7
      Total: 52

Montreal started the season by splitting a home-and-home series against Winnipeg with the road team winning both SU and ATS. This past Friday against Calgary in the first of another home-and-home series, the Alouettes could only manage a first and fourth quarter touchdown as Anthony Calvillo continued to struggle throwing the ball. He went 22-for-36 for just 205 yards in the loss.

The Stampeders will go for the series sweep this Saturday night behind an offense that is ranked second in the West Division in scoring. Jon Cornish continues to lead the running game with 304 total yards in his first three outings. Calgary is 2-1 both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in two of the three games. Quarterback Drew Tate is listed as ‘questionable’ with an arm injury so look for Kevin Glenn to get the start if he cannot go.

Including last week’s victory over Montreal, the Stamps are now 4-1 SU and a perfect 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings. The home team in this series is 6-2 SU and 5-3 ATS in the last eight games. The total has gone OVER in five of the last six games played in Calgary.

Edmonton Eskimos at British Columbia Lions
      Point-spread: BC -8 ½
      Total: 50

The Eskimos’ offense was non-existent in the first game of this home-and-home series against BC with less than 100 yards passing and 200 yards of total offense. Dating back to last season, Edmonton is 1-6 SU in its last seven games and 2-5 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in its last two games.

BC bounced-back from a 44-32 loss to Calgary on opening day as a 3 ½-point road underdog with back-to-back victories both SU and ATS the past two weeks. The total stayed UNDER in both of those games. Heading into this week’s contest the Lions have allowed the fewest points per game of any team in the CFL (21).

The Lions have owned this series over the past three seasons with a 7-1 record SU. They are 6-2 ATS during this run and the total has stayed UNDER in five of the eight games. Over the past 10 meetings, the record is evenly split SU at 5-5 between the home and road team.

      Sunday, July 21

      Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Saskatchewan Roughriders
      Point-spread: Saskatchewan -6 ½
      Total: 57

Hamilton’s victory this past week was just its second SU win in its last eight games. It is also 2-6 ATS over this stretch and the total has stayed UNDER in its last two contests. Hamilton quarterback Henry Burris leads the CFL in passing with 957 yards while completing 65.7 percent of his attempts.

Saskatchewan’s surprising 3-0 start both SU and ATS followed a five-game losing streak (0-4-1 ATS) to close-out the 2012 season. The total has gone OVER in all three games behind an offense that is racking-up an average of 38 points a game. Darian Durant leads the league in touchdowns passes with eight.

Hamilton is 2-10-1 ATS in its last 13 trips to Saskatchewan and 6-19-1 ATS in the last 26 meetings overall. The total has gone OVER in 20 of the last 28 meetings including both games between the two last season.

Argonauts at Blue Bombers: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+3, 52)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers' defense continues to dominate with 18 sacks in three games, but the offense has yet to reach that level. Quarterback Buck Pierce aims to elevate his game when the Blue Bombers host the Toronto Argonauts on Friday. Winnipeg has just one win to show for its defensive performance as Pierce has thrown four interceptions and completed 53-of-91 passes for a career-low completion percentage of 58.2, while running back Chad Simpson has just 251 combined yards.

Toronto should welcome a chance to face an East Division opponent after dropping two straight to West Division powerhouses in the BC Lions and Saskatchewan Roughriders. Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray is off to an excellent start, but his receiving corps needed plenty of medical attention during last week’s home loss to Saskatchewan. Wide receiver Dontrelle Inman and slotback Chad Owens - last year’s Most Outstanding Player - both looked worse for wear after facing the Roughriders, and the Blue Bombers promise to be just as tough.

        TV: 8 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (1-2): Slotback Andre Durie, who is from Mississauga, Ont., was named Canadian Player of the Week after recording 122 combined yards and a 10-yard touchdown reception in Week 3. Owens, who has 640 total combined yards, has been the focal point of opposing defenses, allowing Ray to use a variety of receivers to tally 917 passing yards. Ray has completed 79-of-110 passes and has yet to throw an interception, spreading the field with five receivers (Owens, Durie, Inman, Jason Barnes and Spencer Watt) recording more than 100 receiving yards apiece.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (1-2): Coach Tim Burke cancelled practice Monday as Winnipeg sorted through its injury situation. Linebacker Terrell Parker will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL and defensive back Desia Dunn is out at least two weeks with a hamstring injury, while a host of ailing players including defensive end Alex Hall (league-leading five sacks) missed practice Tuesday. The Blue Bombers allowed six sacks on Pierce in their loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 3 and will need to protect him better if they hope to get their offense going.

        TRENDS:

        * Argonauts are 7-2 ATS in their last nine road games.
        * Under is 4-1 in Blue Bombers last five games overall.
        * Argonauts are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings in Winnipeg.
        * Under is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings in Winnipeg.

        EXTRA POINTS:

        1. Winnipeg is looking for its first home victory at new Investors Group Field after losing to the Montreal Alouettes in Week 1.

        2. Argonauts RB Chad Kackert has been limited to 55 rushing yards over the last two games after recording 112 against Hamilton to open the season.

        3. The Blue Bombers were flagged for 19 penalties in Week 3.

Montreal (1-2) @ Calgary (2-1)-- Stampeders (+2) won 22-14 in Montreal last week, their fourth win in last five series games; Calgary outgained Alouettes by 118 yards despite six Montreal sacks. Five of last seven series games went over total. Road team won all three Montreal games; Als scored 11-14 points in home losses last two weeks, with both games staying under- they scored 38 in only win- they've been outscored in second half in every game so far. Calgary has been outscored 55-22 in second half of games. Six of last eight series games went over the total.

Alouettes at Stampeders: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Montreal Alouettes at Calgary Stampeders (-7, 49)

Veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn looked comfortable filling in for injured Calgary Stampeders starter Drew Tate in a 22-14 victory at Montreal last week. Glenn will try to repeat that performance when the Stampeders host the Alouettes on Saturday. Glenn, who started many games last year - including the Grey Cup final - in place of the oft-injured Tate, completed 22-of-28 passes for 268 yards and got help from running back Jon Cornish, who is second in the league with 304 rushing yards.

Montreal veteran quarterback Anthony Calvillo was limited to 205 passing yards as the Alouettes’ struggles on offence continued under new coach Dan Hawkins. Calvillo is completing less than 60 percent of his passes (58.6) for the first time since 2002 and is on pace for his lowest yardage total since 2007. Montreal’s bright spot is its defence, which recorded six sacks against Calgary last week and is led by linebacker Chip Cox, who is tied for the league lead in tackles with 24.

              TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-2, 1-2 ATS): Veteran offensive lineman Scott Flory is out for the rest of the season after suffering a torn bicep, weakening the already-questionable pass protection in front of Calvillo. Flory, a nine-time CFL all-star, is joined on the sidelines by guard Andrew Woodruff, who suffered a concussion last week. Montreal safety Kyries Hebert - nicknamed “Angry Bird” in reference to the team’s logo, the popular video game and his hard, high-flying hits - is tied with Stampeders defensive lineman Charleston Hughes for second in the league with four sacks.

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (2-1, 2-1 ATS): Brad Sinopoli made the transition from quarterback to receiver look easy last week, catching five passes for 81 yards in his debut, including a highlight-reel, one-handed grab in the third quarter. Sinopoli was added to the roster after Tate got hurt and was called on to start when wide receiver Maurice Price sat out with soreness in his knee. Defensive back Keon Raymond led Calgary with six tackles in his season debut after missing two games with an ankle injury.

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Calgary.
              * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
              * Alouettes are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings in Calgary.
              * Alouettes are 0-5 ATS in their last five meetings.

              EXTRA POINTS:

              1. Stampeders K Rene Paredes was named Special Teams Player of the Week after converting 5-of-5 field goal attempts in Week 3 to stretch his streak to 25 consecutive field goals. The CFL record is 30.

              2. Montreal released RB Chris Jennings, who had eight carries for 29 yards in Week 1 but did not play following the return of RB Brandon Whitaker from an ACL injury.

              3. The Alouettes, who have lost two straight since opening the season with a victory, have not recorded three straight regular-season losses since the end of the 2011 campaign.

Eskimos at Lions: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Edmonton Eskimos at B.C. Lions (-9, 47.5)

The Edmonton Eskimos will not have to worry about rain this week. After playing the past two weeks in downpours, the Eskimos visit the BC Lions on Saturday at BC Place, which has a retractable roof. The Lions held the Eskimos to three points in wet conditions at Edmonton last week - something quarterback Mike Reilly and the rest of the Eskimos offense would like to remedy in the rematch against one of the league’s deeper defenses.

BC’s defense held strong in its first week without linebacker Adam Bighill, who is expected to miss at least one more week with an ankle injury. The Lions were especially strong defending the run in the last two weeks, surrendering 115 yards on the ground following a rough Week 1 in which they gave up 200. BC quarterback Travis Lulay appeared to enjoy the rain, rushing for 82 yards last week and tossing two touchdowns in the third quarter to continue his strong start to the season.

              TV: 10 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (1-2, 1-2 ATS): Reilly completed 44-of-80 passes for 492 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions in his first three games as Edmonton’s starter. While Reilly could use more help from running back Hugh Charles (177 rushing yards), his game needs to improve if he hopes to retain his first CFL starting job. Edmonton has 39-year-old quarterback Kerry Joseph (27,244 career passing yards) ready to fill in and provide veteran stability, but for a team looking to build for the future, Joseph represents a short-term solution.

ABOUT THE LIONS (2-1, 2-1 ATS): Cornerback Cord Parks is the only defender in the league with two interceptions, including one he returned 45 yards for a touchdown in Week 1. Running back Andrew Harris (292 combined yards) and wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux (206 receiving yards) are Lulay’s favorrite options on offense, while slotback Nick Moore (187 receiving yards) took the place of Geroy Simon in BC’s backfield. Slotback Shawn Gore is expected to play this week after missing a game with a concussion, adding another weapon to Lulay’s arsenal.

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in BC.
              * Eskimos are 2-6 ATS in their last eight meetings.
              * Eskimos are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings in BC.

              EXTRA POINTS:

              1. Edmonton LB JC Sherritt is tied for the league lead in tackles with 24. Eskimos LB Damaso Munoz is tied for fourth with 18.

              2. The Lions, who won their home opener against the Toronto Argonauts in Week 2, were 8-1 at home last year.

              3. Eskimos star SB Fred Stamps, who was a last-minute scratch in Week 3 with a leg injury, is questionable for Saturday.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-7, 59)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have dominated both sides of the ball over the first three weeks of the regular season, with running back Kory Sheets on a record-setting pace. Sheets and the Roughriders try to keep their perfect record intact when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday. No running back in CFL history has recorded as many rushing yards in the first three weeks as Sheets, who has a whopping 442 - on pace to break Mike Pringle’s CFL rushing record of 2,065 yards.

Tiger-Cats quarterback Henry Burris leads the league in passing yards with 957, including 362 and two touchdowns in a 25-20 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 3. Hamilton, however, continues to show big holes in its run defense, allowing a 75-yard gain and three rushing touchdowns against Winnipeg’s lackluster offense. The Tiger-Cats sacked the Blue Bombers six times and recorded one interception but, unless they can slow down Sheets, that might not be enough against Saskatchewan.

                TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (1-2, 0-3 ATS): Burris, who has recorded more than 4,000 passing yards in a season nine times, also leads Hamilton in rushing yards with 113. The 38-year-old pivot has spread the workload amongst his receiving corps, with five wideouts (Greg Ellingson, Bakari Grant, Andy Fantuz, Samuel Giguere and Ed Gant) recording more than 100 yards. Fantuz did not play in Week 3 and is considered doubtful for Sunday, while running back C.J. Gable, who also missed last week, did not practice Tuesday.

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (3-0, 3-0 ATS): Quarterback Darian Durant, who suffered a sprained foot in last week’s 39-28 victory over the Toronto Argonauts, was back at practice Thursday and is expected to start. Durant has completed 54-of-75 passes for eight touchdowns and no interceptions. Saskatchewan’s defense, led by linebacker Renauld Williams (14 tackles, three sacks, one interception), has limited opponents to 88 rushing yards or fewer in each of the first three games and conceded only two touchdowns on the ground.

                TRENDS:

                * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Saskatchewan.
                * Over is 20-8-1 in the last 29 meetings.
                * Tiger-Cats are 6-19-1 ATS in their last 26 meetings.
                * Tiger-Cats are 2-10-1 ATS in their last 13 meetings in Saskatchewan.

                EXTRA POINTS:

                1. The 101st Grey Cup Championship officially sold out this week. The game - to be played at Mosaic Field in Regina on Nov. 24 - would be a home contest for the undefeated Roughriders should they advance to the final.

                2. Hamilton lost to the Edmonton Eskimos 30-20 in Week 2 and was 2-6 against West Division opponents last year.

                3. Saskatchewan’s best start to a season came in 2008, when it went 6-0.

                    2013 CFL.ca Game Notes: A look at Week 5

TORONTO – With the bye weeks looming, the Week 5 will be an important one for teams looking to hit their breaks on a high note.

The action gets underway on Thursday, with the Eskimos traveling to Montreal to take on the Alouettes at Percival Molson Stadium.

On Friday, the red-hot Stampeders head to Winnipeg to face Justin Goltz and the Bombers. Twent-three-and-a-half hours later, the Roughriders invade Guelph, looking to extend their streak to five against the home-town Tiger-Cats.

Finally, a rare Tuesday night battle will see the Lions take on the Argonauts at Rogers Centre.

Equipped with the most up-to-date storylines, roster moves, stats, milestones and trends, the Week 5 CFL.ca Game Notes will provide you with everything you need for the upcoming week of football.

Calgary’s Comeback: In the history of Canadian football dating back to 1907, only one club has ever came back to win from being at least 21 points or 3 touchdowns behind after one quarter – and that was Calgary on July 20, 2013 when they trailed Montreal 24-0 after one quarter and won 38-27. They are one of only two clubs to have ever rallied from being 20 points down after one quarter to win (the other was BC in 2004 at Montreal), and only two have ever scored 24 points in the first quarter and NOT won. Hamilton scored 24 points in the first 15:00 on Oct 22, 1994 and lost to Winnipeg 46-44.

What is the all-time W-L record for teams that scored 20 or more points in the first quarter? Answer: It’s been done 102 times in more than 5,100 games, and those clubs won 91 of them (91-11). The oddity is that in 2013, two clubs have scored at least 20 in the first quarter and have both lost.

Ray and Durant: Ricky Ray’s completion mark of 75.4% is well above the league record held by Dave Dickenson of 74.0% in 2005. Only three quarterbacks have ever finished a season above 70% (Dickenson twice and Anthony Calvillo in 2009).

Darian Durant’s passer rating of 136.9, as well as Ray’s rating of 124.0 and Drew Tate’s clip of 124.5 are also well above the league record held by Dickenson.

Ray set an all-time CFL record last week completing 19 of 20 passes for a 95 per-cent completion rate (min. 20 atts).

Neither Ray nor Durant have thrown an interception to this point – it is the first time in Durant’s career that he has gone four starts in a row without throwing at least one. Ray has gone four games in a row once before but not in the same season.

Chasing Milt: Lions receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux has caught just 12 passes but has racked up an impressive total of 312 yards to rank third in the league. His average currently sits at 26.0 yards per catch and that threatens the league record set by Milt Stegall in 1997 at 26.5 yards (61 for 1,616 yards). Arceneaux leads the CFL with 5 receptions for 30 or more yards and has at least one in each of his four games thus far.

No turnovers Allowed: Saskatchewan has yet to turn the ball over on offence this year and have just one giveaway on a short kickoff and fumble. The CFL has published a highly detailed analysis of offensive possessions since 2008 and in that six-year span this run is the only time any one club went four games in a row without an offensive turnover.

QB Sacks Up: There has been an average of 5.6 sacks per game in 2013 compared to just 4.3 last year. Winnipeg registered only one last week but still leads with 19 and are on pace for 86 which would just edge the CFL record of 85 set by Calgary in 1986.

Clarifying Rene Paredes’ FG Streak: By rule, for a kicked ball to be considered either a legal punt or a field goal attempt, the ball must cross the line of scrimmage. The purpose of the rule is not merely statistical but was put in place in the 1970s to match play on the field. For example, a blocked kick that remains behind the line of scrimmage may be recovered and advanced legally by either team as in a fumble.

However, a ball that crosses the line of scrimmage is subject to downfield rules for no yards and may be recovered legally only by the kicker unless touched by the returning team. A good way to think of the attempt itself is the role of the defence: Through defensive effort they try to “prevent” yards from being gained or attempts from being made as in the example of a sack.

If a passer drops back and is attempting to pass and is sacked, therefore rendering him unable to get off an attempt, it is the same as a FG kicker who gets his kick blocked. So yes, Paredes was of course “kicking” the ball, sa me as Ricky Ray was attempting to pass but both were “prevented” from making a legal attempt by defensive effort. So in the end, “prevent” may well be a better term here than “block”.

                    Roster Moves:

There plenty of roster moves made this week, primarily in Toronto where the Argos saw major personnel movement.

On the injury front, the Argos might be without QB Ricky Ray, who suffered an undisclosed lower-body injury on in last week’s loss to Winnipeg. While Ray’s status remains up in the air, the Boatmen will be without tailback Chad Kackert for 4-6 weeks. He’ll be replaced by backup tailback Curtis Steele.

Also in Toronto, Brandon Isaac was released on Tuesday. However, Isaac wasn’t on the market too long, as the Tiger-Cats scooped him up on Wednesday.

In Winnipeg, Justin Goltz will make his first career start under centre, as Buck Pierce is still nursing an abdominal injury. Goltz will be without Winnipeg’s top receiver, as Chris Matthews is suffering from a back injury.

Preview: Edmonton at Montreal Wk. 5
Our west in Calgary, the QB situation is still up in the air, but it was made clear on Wednesday that Kevin Glenn will not start regardless if Drew Tate is healthy enough to go due to an elbow injury he suffered against the Alouettes in Week 4. If Tate is still unable to play, Bo Levi Mitchell is expected to get the nod.

                    Milestone Alert:

Kory Sheets has started the 2013 CFL season in spectacular fashion, leading the Riders to four straight wins to start the year for just the second time in club history. Sheets leads the CFL in yards from scrimmage with 621 and that puts him at 115.3 yards per game. Though just four weeks in, he is on pace for 2,795 yards from scrimmage which would easily eclipse the CFL record first set by Mike Pringle at 2,414 in 1994. He also threatens the league rushing record set by Pringle at 2,065 yards (115 per game) and Sheets’ average of 143 per game is well above that at this point.

Geroy Simon needs just nine receptions to become the third player to reach 1,000 and with 15,825 career yards is just 175 short of becoming the first to reach 16,000. His consecutive streak of at least one catch has reached 174 games.

J.C. Sherritt broke the CFL record for defensive tackles in one season by recording 130 last year. In 2013, he is having another great season (27, on pace for 122) but is only tied for second at this point. Montreal’s Chip Cox has 36 tackles in four games after getting totals of 9, 10 and then 12 last week. Cox is on pace for 162 defensive tackles in 2013 and has led the entire CFL in each of the last two weeks.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 5

                      July 23, 2013

The new CFL season is only four weeks old and the balance of power in the league has already shifted to the West Division with a combined straight up record of 11-5 as opposed to a combined 5-11 record in the East.

Last Friday night, Toronto beat Winnipeg 35-19 as a 3 ½-point road favorite in an East Division matchup but the following day Calgary stormed past Montreal 38-27 as a 7 ½-point home favorite in an inter-divisional showdown. British Columbia went on to hammer Edmonton 31-21 as a nine-point home favorite in this past Saturday’s second game.

Sunday’s game was another lopsided win for the West with Saskatchewan remaining undefeated on the year by posting a 37-0 shutout of Hamilton as a 7 ½-point favorite at home. The West is now a perfect 6-0 SU in inter-division matchups against the East this season.

The following is a brief betting preview for Week 5 of the CFL regular season with the opening pointspread and ‘over/under’ lines provided by TopBet.

                      Thursday, July 25

                      Edmonton Eskimos vs. Montreal Alouettes
                      Point-spread: Montreal -5
                      Total: 48.5

Edmonton’s loss to BC on Saturday in the back-end of a home-and-home series dropped its overall record to 1-3 both SU and against the spread. Its only win of the year was a 30-20 victory over Hamilton in Week 2 as a seven-point road underdog. The Eskimos have given-up the second most points in the West while scoring the fewest.

The Alouettes continue to struggle on offense as the loss of former head coach Marc Trestman to the NFL could be taking its toll. Montreal has now lost its last three games to fall to 1-3 SU and ATS on the year. The total has stayed UNDER in two of its last three games. Quarterback Anthony Calvillo has thrown four touchdowns and four interceptions in the first four games.

Montreal has won eight of the last nine meetings SU and is 7-2 ATS. It is a perfect 3-0 SU in the last three meetings at home including a tight 27-25 victory last October as a five-point favorite. The total ended as a PUSH on a closing line of 52 in that contest after going OVER in the previous two meetings.

ESPN2 will provide national coverage of this game at 7:30 p.m. ET.

                      Friday, July 26

Calgary Stampeders vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers
                      Point-spread: Calgary -4
                      Total: 56

Calgary is averaging 31.3 points a game which is the second-most in the CFL, but its defense has also allowed an average of 27.3 points in its first four games. The net result is a 3-1 mark both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in three of the four games. Quarterback Drew Tate remains questionable with a lingering arm injury, but Kevin Glenn has done a good job in relief.

The Blue Bombers have some injury concerns of their own with quarterback Buck Pierce listed as ‘doubtful’ with an abdominal strain. Last Friday’s loss to Toronto dropped them to 1-3 SU and 2-2 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in two of their last three games.

The Stampeders bring a seven-game SU winning streak over Winnipeg into this Friday’s matchup. However, they are just 3-5-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings. Calgary covered the spread in both games last season and the total has gone OVER in five of the last eight meetings in this series.

                      Saturday, July 27

                      Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats
                      Point-spread: Saskatchewan -4
                      Total: 56

The Roughriders will put their four-game winning streak both SU and ATS on the line this Saturday night. This followed a five-game SU losing streak (0-4-1 ATS) to close-out the 2012 season. The total has gone OVER in three of their first four games this season and they lead the CFL in scoring with a total of 151 points (37.8 PPG).

Hamilton is 1-3 SU on the year and it has failed to cover in all four games. It also failed to score a single point in the first game of this home-and-home series this past Sunday after averaging 26.3 points in its first three contests this season. The Tiger-Cats are now the lowest scoring team in the East Division while allowing the most points of any team in the CFL.

Saskatchewan has now won five of the last seven meetings SU and is also 5-2 ATS over the same stretch of games. The total stayed UNDER the 59 ½-point line in last Sunday’s game and it has stayed UNDER in three of the last five meetings between the two. One of the teams in this series has scored 30 points or more in six of the last seven meetings.

                      Tuesday, July 30

British Columbia Lions vs. Toronto Argonauts
                      Point-spread: OFF
                      Total: OFF

BC will get an extended break into early next week after this past Saturday’s win over Edmonton which should go a long way towards getting a few of its banged-up players off the current injury list. The Lions have won their last three games both SU and ATS after a disappointing 44-32 loss to Calgary on opening day as 3 ½-point road underdogs.

Toronto quarterback Ricky Ray leads the CFL in total passing yards with 1,203 while completing 75.4 percent of his throws. He has also tossed eight touchdowns against zero interceptions. The defending Grey Cup champs are 2-2 SU and ATS on the year with the total going OVER in three of the four games. Unfortunately Ray left last week’s game early with a knee injury and his status is ‘questionable’ for Sunday, which is why there is no early opening number on this matchup. Also injured last week for the Argos was running back Chad Kackert, who is ‘questionable’ as well for Week 5.

BC has won the last six meetings SU including a 24-16 victory on July 4 as a seven-point home favorite. It is 5-1 ATS during this run and the total has stayed UNDER in five of the last seven games. The Lions’ defense has allowed the second-fewest points in the league this season while the Argonauts come in as the highest scoring team in the East.

                          CFL
                          Armadillo's Write-Up

                          Week 5

Edmonton (1-3) @ Montreal (1-3)-- Alouettes lost last three games, as offense struggles in first year without QB guru Trestman (new coach of Bears); Montreal led 24-0 last week in first quarter at Calgary, lost 38-27, biggest blown lead in CFL history. Als were outscored in second half of all four games (total of 59-33); they're 1-3 despite having turnover ratio of +6, a red flag. Montreal won last six series games, with five of six wins by 10+ points; Eskimos lost their last six visits here, by 36-10-34-17-23-2 points. All three Edmonton losses are by 10+ points. Over is 5-3-1 in last nine series games, 3-1 in Edmonton games.

Calgary (3-1) @ Winnipeg (1-3)-- Bombers allowed 38-35 points in losing both their home games this year, by 5-16 points; they're already -9 in turnovers, coughing ball up 12 times in four games. Stampeders won last seven series games, winning last three visits here by 3-1-11 points, with four of last five visits here going over total; Stamps split their two road games, scoring 21-22 points (they're scoring 41 ppg at home). Calgary has injury issues at QB; SMU alum Mitchell was third Stamp QB to play last week, as they won 38-27 after trailing 24-0 in first quarter. Road team covered all four Winnipeg games this year.

Saskatchewan (4-0) @ Hamilton (1-3)-- Roughriders (-7.5) crushed Hamilton 37-0 in last week's game at Taylor Field, Riders' 16th win in last 19 series games; they're 7-2 in last nine visits here (Hamilton, not Guelph), dogs covered four of last six series games, with five of last seven at Hamilton going over total. Riders are 4-0 this year, with all four wins by 11+ points; they're +7 in turnovers, +10 in sacks and run balll for 155.5 ypg. TiCats allowed 30+ points in all three losses; they're got only two takeaways in four games (-3)- Burris has already been sacked 16 times. In the NFL, this would be a trap game.

BC Lions (3-1) @ Toronto (2-2)-- Knee injury to Argo QB Ray has this game off board; even with Ray, Toronto (+7) lost 24-16 in Week 2 at BC Place, as Lions outrushed Argos 160-34, outgained them 417-249 (led 14-3 at half). BC has beaten Toronto six games in a row and 16 of last 17, winning seven of last eight visits here, last two 29-16/18-9. Six of last eight series games stayed under total, eight of last nine played here. Toronto scored 39-35 points in its two wins, 16-28 in its losses; Lions allowed average of 13.3 ppg last three weeks, in wins by 8-14-10 points. CFL home dogs are 1-3 vs spread this year.

Eskimos at Alouettes: What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Eskimos at Montreal Alouettes (-5, 48.5)
The Montreal Alouettes are scrambling for a way to bounce back after blowing a 24-0 lead and suffering their third straight defeat. Perhaps they will find it Thursday when they host the Edmonton Eskimos - a team the Alouettes have not lost to since July 30, 2009. Montreal is 6-0 against Edmonton over the last three years but has not looked like the same dominant team under new coach Dan Hawkins, who faces issues with consistency on offense and discipline on defense.

The Eskimos should be happy to head east again after dropping back-to-back games against the BC Lions to fall to 0-3 against West Division opponents. Edmonton’s only victory came in Week 2, when it defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 30-20 in Guelph, Ont. The biggest problem for the Eskimos has been their offense, which has produced a league-low 72 points with starting quarterback Mike Reilly (56-for-100 passing, 644 yards), whose job is likely on the line.

                          TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (1-3, 1-3 ATS): Reilly has been effective on the ground, running for 151 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. Backup quarterback Jonathan Crompton looked good filling in for Reilly in the late stages of Week 4, finishing 4-for-5 for 76 yards and a touchdown. Crompton is 10-for-16 in his first CFL season and has yet to throw an interception. Linebackers JC Sherritt and Damaso Munoz lead Edmonton’s defense with 27 and 26 tackles, respectively.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-3, 1-3 ATS): Quarterback Anthony Calvillo is off to an uneven start, completing 76-of-129 passes and throwing as many interceptions as touchdowns (four). Calvillo has connected with slotback S.J. Green for 307 yards and three of his four touchdown tosses, while only two other receivers - slotbacks Arland Bruce and Jamel Richardson - have more than 100 receiving yards. Linebacker Chip Cox has two sacks and an interception to add to his league-leading 36 tackles, while safety Kyries Hebert has a team-leading five sacks.

                          TRENDS:
                          * Eskimos are 1-5 ATS in their last six meetings.
                          * Eskimos are 1-5 ATS in their last six meetings in Montreal.
                          * Eskimos are 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games.
                          * Alouettes are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games.

                          EXTRA POINTS:
                          1. Hebert, living up to his “Angry Bird” nickname, was flagged twice for unnecessary roughness in Week 4, extending key drives in the early stages of the Calgary Stampeders’ 38-27 comeback victory.

                          2. Edmonton RB Hugh Charles leads the team with 454 total combined yards.

                          3. The Alouettes have not lost a home game against the Eskimos since Sept. 23, 2007, but are 0-2 playing at home in Molson Stadium to begin the season.

                          CFL Rankings: Week 5
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Last week's ranking in parentheses.

                          1. Saskatchewan Roughriders (1) The Riders look like a CFL juggernaut right now. I guess the only concern is, are they peaking too early? Remember, they'll host the 101st Grey Cup in Regina this fall. A loss is coming, but I'm certainly not interested in standing in Saskatchewan's way right now.

                          2. B.C. Lions (2) B.C. has benefited from a rather soft schedule over the last few weeks, hosting the Argos before a home-and-home set with the Eskimos. Things will get a little tougher this week (or should I say next week - the game will be played on Tuesday) as they head to Toronto for their toughest road test of the young season.

                          3. Calgary Stampeders (3) Drew Tate is hurt. Now Kevin Glenn is banged up as well. No big deal. The Stamps have more QB depth than any team in the league, with third-stringer Bo Levi Mitchell more than capable of holding his own as we saw last weekend against Montreal. We'll see if the Stamps can avoid a letdown against a hungry Bombers squad in Winnipeg on Friday.

                          4. Toronto Argonauts (4) Toronto desperately needed a strong showing in Winnipeg last week and got just that, rolling to a 35-19 victory. Unfortunately, they'll have to soldier on without RB Chad Kackert for the next few weeks, and to make matters worse, QB Ricky Ray is nursing a knee injury but should be good to go by Tuesday night when the Argos host the Lions.

                          5. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5) The Bombers aren't doing anything to instill much confidence in their home faithful, but with that being said, neither are the teams below them. Despite winning only once in four games this season, Winnipeg still finds itself just one game back of the East-leading Argos. The Bombers have dropped seven in a row against the Stampeders but will try to reverse that trend on Friday.

                          6. Edmonton Eskimos (8) I'm going to give the rebuilding Eskimos the benefit of the doubt and bump them up a couple of spots this week. They're just 1-3, but those three losses have come against Saskatchewan and B.C. (twice), arguably the league's two best teams. They didn't quit last Saturday at B.C. Place, and have a winnable game on deck in Montreal on Thursday night. Obviously, QB Mike Reilly's injury status will be key.

                          7. Montreal Alouettes (7) The Als looked great last week. For a quarter. It was all downhill from there as the offense couldn't punch back once the Stampeders made the necessary defensive adjustments. QB Anthony Calvillo and offensive coordinator Mike Miller are saying all the right things, but body language during games seems to indicate otherwise. Needless to say, the Dan Hawkins era is off to a miserable start in Montreal.

                          8. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6) Until the Ti-Cats can get healthy, there will continue to be a few stinkers here and there. We certainly saw one on Sunday as they were trounced 37-0 by the Riders in Saskatchewan. Hamilton won't have to wait to get a shot at revenge as it will host the Riders on Saturday night in Guelph. The good news is, Saskatchewan hasn't swept the season series since 2010.

Stampeders at Blue Bombers: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Calgary Stampeders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+5, 48.5)

The Calgary Stampeders emerged from their record-setting comeback against the Montreal Alouettes with their third-string quarterback at the helm. Bo Levi Mitchell may see his first career CFL start when the Stampeders visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday. Starting quarterback Drew Tate suffered an injury to his throwing arm in Week 2 and backup Kevin Glenn left last week’s game in the third quarter with an injury - also to his throwing arm - leaving Mitchell to toss two touchdown passes and seal the 38-27 victory.

Winnipeg also has issues with the health of its quarterback as Buck Pierce is questionable to start this week after being hit hard in the abdomen during a 35-19 loss to the Toronto Argonauts. Pierce, who has thrown five interceptions and two touchdowns, will likely be replaced by backup Justin Goltz, who completed 13-of-15 passes for 170 yards in the second half against Toronto. The Blue Bombers would not elaborate on the severity of Pierce’s injury, which adds more uncertainty to an offense that has not scored more than 20 points in a game since Week 1.

                              TV: 8 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (3-1, 3-1 ATS): Running back Jon Cornish had 109 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries against the Alouettes and is second in the league with 413 rushing yards, behind Saskatchewan Roughriders running back Kory Sheets. No other player has more than 300. Cornish, who led the league with 1,457 rushing yards last year, was limited to 42 yards against the Roughriders in Week 2 - the only time he has been held to fewer than 100 combined yards this season. Defensive lineman Charleston Hughes leads Calgary with four sacks but missed last week’s game because of a wrist injury.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (1-3, 2-2 ATS): Pierce is one of many players questionable to play Friday. Wide receiver Chris Matthews and defensive tackles Bryant Turner and JT Gilmore are all suffering from various ailments. Defensive end Alex Hall has six of Winnipeg’s 19 sacks, including the only one against Toronto. Linebacker Henoc Muamba leads the team with 22 tackles and added a sack, but the potential loss of Turner could leave a big hole that the third-year tackle - who is second on the team with three sacks - would need to fill. Running back Chad Simpson was limited to 50 rushing yards last week and is fourth in the league with 256 through four games.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Winnipeg.
                              * Stampeders are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven meetings in Winnipeg.
                              * Stampeders are 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine games overall.
                              * Blue Bombers are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

                              EXTRA POINTS:

                              1. The Stampeders are second in the CFL Power Rankings (behind Saskatchewan) following their home-and-home sweep of the Alouettes. The Blue Bombers are seventh.

                              2. Winnipeg is the only East Division team not to face a West Division opponent yet.

                              3. Calgary K Rene Paredes still has a shot at reaching the CFL record for 30 straight made field goals after officials decided that last week’s blocked kick happened behind the line of scrimmage, ruling it a fumble instead of a missed kick. Paredes, named Special Teams Player of the Week, has made 29 consecutive field goals.

The Canadian Football league enters Week 5 Thursday night with the Edmonton Eskimos at Montreal Alouettes.

One trend that has jumped out is that of the home underdog.

Of the 16 games played thus far heading into the Week 5, the home dog is 0-4 ATS. Both the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Eskimos are 0-2 ATS as home dogs.

The fifth week of the CFL calendar has a couple of opportunities to visit this trend. The Calgary Stampeders are in Winnipeg to face the Blue Bombers Friday. Winnipeg is currently a 5-point home dog.

Also, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are 4-point home underdogs with the unbeaten Saskatchewan Roughriders in town Saturday evening.

The final matchup of the week, the BC Lions at Toronto Argonauts, is currently off the board.

It's early in the Canadian Football League season, but favorites have an overwhelming edge so far in terms of betting.

The favorite has posted a record of 13-4 straight up (76.4 percent) after the Montreal Alouettes beat the Edmonton Eskimos Thursday night and covered as 4-point home faves 32-27. Favorites are also 12-5 against the spread.

Faves had a perfect 4-0 ATS opening week to the season and a spotless 4-0 ATS record in Week 4, making it five straight covers for the chalk heading into Friday's action.

Week 5 action continues Friday with Calgary as 5-point road faves against Winnipeg. Saturday sees the Riders travel to Ontario and face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Riders are currently 4-point road faves.

The week concludes Tuesday with the Toronto Argos hosting the B.C. Lions. This matchup is currently off the board with Argos starting QB Ricky Ray hobbling due to a knee injury.
