CFL Betting Preview- Week 1
This Thursday night in Winnipeg the 2013 Canadian Football League kicks off its 18-game regular season schedule that will set the stage for this year’s quest for the Grey Cup Championship in late November. The Toronto Argonauts shocked CFL fans last year with their run to a title after going just 9-9 in the regular season, so anything is possible when it comes to professional football “North of the Border.”
The following is a brief betting preview of all of the CFL Week 1 games with the opening point spread and total line provided by 5Dimes.
Thursday, June 27
Montreal Alouettes vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Point-spread: Montreal -5
Total: 53
Montreal won the East Division last season at 11-7 straight-up but it went just 8-10 against the spread overall. The total went OVER in six of its nine games on the road. The Alouettes season came to sudden end with a stunning 27-20 loss to the Argonauts in the East Division Finals as five-point home favorites.
It was a rough 2012 campaign for the Blue Bombers with an overall 6-12 SU record that had them on the outside looking in come playoff time. They did go 9-9 ATS that included a profitable 6-3 ATS record at home. The stayed UNDER in five of their nine home games.
These two teams met four times in 2012 with each team winning once at home and once on the road SU. They also split the series 2-2 ATS with the total going OVER in the first two meetings and staying UNDER in the final two.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Toronto Argonauts
Point-spread: Hamilton -4 ½
Total: 55
The Tiger-Cats were another team that watched the Grey Cup Playoffs on TV last season after going 6-12 SU. They were somewhat better ATS at 9-9, but they still had a losing 4-5 ATS record on the road. The total went OVER in seven of their nine games on the road.
Toronto went 9-9 ATS as well last season but it proved to be costly at home with a 3-6 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER in 10 of the 18 games with an identical 4-5 record both at home and on the road. It completed a 3-0 run both SU and ATS in the playoffs by beating Calgary in the Grey Cup 35-22 as a 1 ½-point underdog. The total went OVER the 55 ½-point line in that game.
The Argonauts won the regular season series 3-1 both SU and ATS but the margin of victory was just three points in two of the victories. The total went OVER in all four games after staying UNDER in five of the previous six meetings.
British Columbia Lions vs. Calgary Stampeders
Point-spread: BC -2 ½
Total: 52
The Lions won the Grey Cup in 2011 and despite having the best SU record in the CFL last season at 13-5; they could not get past the West Division Finals with a 34-29 loss to the Stampeders as 6 ½-point home favorites. They were 9-9 ATS overall and 3-6 ATS on the road. The total stayed UNDER in seven of their nine road games.
Calgary finished just game back in the West at 12-6 SU and it went 10-8 ATS. It was 4-5 ATS at home and the total went OVER in five of the nine games. Before knocking off the Lions in the divisional final, the Stampeders beat Saskatchewan 36-30 in the semifinals in a game that ended as a PUSH.
BC won the regular-season series 2-1 SU and ATS with the home team winning two of the three games. The total stayed UNDER in two of the three games. Prior to last season, the Lions won four of the previous five meetings SU and had s slight 3-2 edge ATS.
Saturday, June 29
Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Edmonton Eskimos
Point-spread: PICK
Total: 50
The Roughriders only won eight games in 2012 SU but that was good enough for third place in the West. They also went 8-10 ATS with a 3-6 ATS record on the road. The total went an even 9-9 but it stayed UNDER in five of the nine road games.
Edmonton was a game worse in the West at 7-11 SU, but it still made the playoffs as a crossover team from the division. It was over .500 ATS at 10-8 and a profitable 6-3 ATS at home. The total went OVER in 10 of its 16 games overall and in six of its nine home games.
The home team in this series is 9-1 SU and 7-3 ATS. Last season, Edmonton won the final two games at home both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in both contests. Montreal Alouettes at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+4, 51)
Dan Hawkins has some big shoes to fill. The new coach of the Montreal Alouettes will try to continue the success his team enjoyed under Marc Trestman when the Alouettes open the CFL season at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday. Trestman, who led Montreal to a 59-31 regular-season record and two Grey Cup wins in five campaigns, is now coaching the NFL’s Chicago Bears. Hawkins was unable to guide the Alouettes to victory in either of their preseason games, but will have a chance for his first CFL triumph against last year's weakest team in the East Division.
Following an appearance in the 99th Grey Cup, Winnipeg scored a league-low 376 points to finish the 2012 season with a 6-12 mark. The Blue Bombers’ offence did not fare any better in the preseason, managing just two field goals while allowing a total of 76 points in two contests. Winnipeg has reason for optimism - including a new stadium and the return of quarterback Buck Pierce, who missed most of last season due to multiple injuries. Pierce is the only quarterback on the roster with substantial CFL experience - but the Blue Bombers' preseason struggles are a familiar refrain.
Home underdogs were a profitable play in the CFL last season. Host teams getting the points went 11-9 SU but 14-6 ATS in 2012. Oddsmakers have tabbed the Blue Bombers as 4-point home underdogs for Thursday's Week 1 opener.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES: QB Anthony Calvillo is returning for his 20th CFL season. The 40-year-old threw for more than 5,000 yards three times during Trestman’s tenure. With his receiving corps - led by veterans Jamel Richardson and S.J. Green - largely intact, and RB Brandon Whitaker set to return from last year’s season-ending knee injury, Calvillo has all the tools at his disposal for another successful season.
ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS: Construction delays pushed the opening of Investors Group Field - Winnipeg’s new home - back a full year, but the 33,422-seat stadium is finally ready to replace Canad Inns Stadium, the home of the Blue Bombers for the last 60 seasons. The change of scenery might do well for a Winnipeg squad that is largely unchanged from last year. The Blue Bombers allowed 531 points in 2012 and will have to be stronger on defence as long as their offensive struggles continue.

Trend says CFL champs are Week 1 fade bets

With the Canadian Football League season kicking off Thursday June 27, we decided to take a look at the past 10 seasons to see how the defending Grey Cup champion and runner up fared in the opening week of the regular season.
It would appear that squads coming off of a Grey Cup winning campaign tend to carry a bit of a hangover into Week 1. The champs are 5-5 SU (straight up) but just 2-7-1 ATS (against the spread) in the opening week of their Cup-defending season.
The runners up fare a bit better ATS going 5-5 in the opening week.
As for totals, the under seems to be the trend to open the season. Both the champs and their Grey Cup victims post an O/U record of 3-7 in the opening week. A little gun-shy perhaps in the normally high-scoring game style of football north of the border.
Here is a look back at the past 10 seasons with the defending Grey Cup champs and the runners up.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Toronto Argonauts (-3, 54.5)
The Toronto Argonauts will look to start their quest for a repeat as Grey Cup champions on the right note when they host the provincial rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday. Toronto defeated the Calgary Stampeders 35-22 at home for its league-record 16th title despite posting a 9-9 record during the regular season. The Tiger-Cats struggled mightily on defence last season, finishing 6-12 in large part because they allowed a league-worst 32 points per game.
The Argonauts defeated Hamilton in three of four meetings last year, including both games at Rogers Centre. The Tiger-Cats hired coach Kent Austin, who led the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a Grey Cup championship in 2007 and spent the last three seasons coaching at Cornell University. Austin was 11-19 in his three seasons with the Big Red. Hamilton is vying for its first winning season since 2004, when it finished 9-8-1.

ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS: In an effort to improve their defence, the Tiger-Cats drafted defensive tackle Linden Gaydosh with the first overall pick in this year’s draft. Gaydosh, however, decided to sign with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers instead. Veteran quarterback Henry Burris threw for 43 touchdowns and a career-high 5,367 yards last year in his first season with Hamilton. The 38-year-old looked strong in the preseason, completing 13 of 17 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns in a 52-0 rout of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS: Weeks after signing quarterback Ricky Ray to an extension that carries through 2015, Toronto reached an agreement with last year’s Most Outstanding Player Chad Owens for two more years. The move helps secure the offence that helped the Argonauts to their first Grey Cup in eight seasons. Toronto cut veteran defensive tackle Kevin Huntley last week, showing confidence in linebackers Robert McCune and Marcus Ball. McCune registered 86 tackles and Ball added 73 last season.

BC Lions at Calgary Stampeders (-3, 51.5)
The BC Lions finished last season with a league-best 13-5 record and looked poised to repeat as Grey Cup champions, only to drop a 34-29 decision to the Calgary Stampeders in the West Division final. The Lions will have a chance to avenge that loss as they open their season with a visit to Calgary on Friday. The Stampeders suffered a 35-22 setback to the Toronto Argonauts in the Grey Cup final and enter their sixth campaign with coach John Hufnagel, who sports a 59-30-1 regular-season record.
The Lions defeated Calgary twice in the regular season last year, but the Stampeders won 41-21 at home in the last meeting before the West final. That victory marked the return of injured Calgary quarterback Drew Tate, but veteran Kevin Glenn would start both the West final and the Grey Cup. A healthy Tate is expected to guide the Stampeders in 2013, while BC signed quarterback Travis Lulay to a two-year extension after he recorded his first season with a passer rating over 100 (100.7) in his fourth year with the squad.

ABOUT THE LIONS: Defence was key for BC last year, as the team finished with 354 points allowed - 55 fewer than any other team in the league. Linebacker Adam Bighill registered 104 tackles, nine sacks and four interceptions while defensive end Keron Williams led the league with 12 sacks. Veteran Paul McCallum recorded a league-high 187 kicking points last year. The Lions traded slotback Geroy Simon, the league’s all-time receiving leader, to Saskatchewan for wide receiver Justin Harper and a third-round pick in 2014.
ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS: Jon Cornish led the league in rushing last year with 1,457 yards - a record for a non-import player - and won the award for Most Outstanding Canadian. Calgary’s offence should run smoothly with Tate and Cornish in the backfield, while its defence - led by linebacker Charleston Hughes (11 sacks) - remains largely intact. The Stampeders added defensive tackle Kevin Huntley to their practice roster less than a week after he was cut by the Toronto Argonauts. Huntley played against the Stampeders in last year’s Grey Cup final.

The Montreal Alouettes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers went against the Week 1 grain in their CFL season opener Thursday night, playing over the 49.5-point total with a 39-33 Montreal win at Investors Group Field.
CFL teams had produced an 8-16 over/under record in Week 1 of the schedule since 2007 heading into 2013, including a 1-3 over/under count in the opening slate of the 2012 season.
Some point to rust of the offseason or new offensive players and coaches still fine tuning their schemes and timing as the reason for this one-sided result, which has paid off for under bettors at a profitable 66.6 percent rate.
The Toronto Argonauts, the defending Grey Cup champions, have been the best under bet in Week 1 during that span, staying below the number in all six games since 2007. The Calgary Stampeders are the second most profitable under play in Week 1, with a 1-5 over/under count in the opener over the past six seasons.
Both Toronto and Calgary are in action Friday night. The Argos open the schedule with a 54.5-point total hosting the Hamilton TiCats (2-4 O/U in Week 1 since 2007) while the Stampeders welcome the BC Lions (2-4 O/U in Week 1 since 2007) to McMahon Stadium with the number sitting at 51.5 points.
Only one team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, have leaned toward the over more in Week 1 since 2007 heading into this season. They boast a 4-2 over/under count over their past six season debuts and visit the Edmonton Eskimos (2-4 O/U in Week 1 since 2007) with the total at 49 points Saturday. Saskatchewan Roughriders at Edmonton Eskimos (+1.5, 49)
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are hoping their prized acquisition Geroy Simon will be ready when they open their regular season by visiting the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday. The veteran slotback and all-time CFL career receiving yards leader suffered a leg injury during the preseason but is considered probable to start alongside Weston Dressler in what should be a fearsome offence for the Roughriders. Edmonton allowed a West Division-worst 25 points per game last year, but the team addressed the issue by acquiring free agent Odell Willis while defensive end Marcus Howard is now healthy.
Saskatchewan finished last season on a four-game losing streak and fell 36-30 to Calgary in the playoffs. Edmonton will have its third different opening-day quarterback in three years as former BC Lions backup Mike Reilly will get the start with Matt Nichols suffering from an ACL injury. Reilly has two previous CFL starts in his career. Pivot Darian Durant is entering his fifth season as the starter for the Roughriders, who posted a 31-24 victory over the Eskimos to open the preseason.

LINE MOVES: Saskatchewan opened as a 1-point road underdog but action in the Riders has swayed the line to Saskatchewan -1.5. The total opened at 50 and has moved to 49 with money on the under.
ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS: Saskatchewan is starting its season with eight players on the injured list, including veteran fullback Neal Hughes, wide receiver Kierrie Johnson and linebacker Abraham Kromah. Along with the injuries, the team will also be without defensive lineman Tearrius George, who will serve a one-game suspension for a helmet-to-helmet hit against Calgary in the playoffs last year. Durant had the most efficient season of his career in 2012, throwing 20 touchdowns and completing a career-high 64.4 percent of his passes while recording his lowest interception total (12) since becoming a starter.
ABOUT THE ESKIMOS: Linebacker JC Sherritt was named Most Outstanding Defensive Player after setting a league record with 130 tackles last season. Sherritt was also tied for second on the team with five interceptions, one behind league leader Joe Burnett. Reilly fared well in his two previous career starts with the Lions, throwing for 682 yards and completing 69.3 percent of his passes. The 28 year old’s main target will be veteran slotback Fred Stamps, who finished second in the league with 1,310 receiving yards last year.

'Over' bettors cash big in CFL Week 1
The ‘over’ went a perfect 4-0 in Week 1 CFL openers,
The eight teams combined to score 277 points in Week 1 (69.25 points per game) with the Calgary Stampeders leading the way with 44 points in their opener against the BC Lions. The two clubs played 24 points over the 52-point total.
In fact, the four openers played over their respective totals by a combined average of 17 points.

Reilly eyeing for bounce back performance in Week 2
EDMONTON -- Call it first game jitters or just plain old bad luck, but Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly knows his Week 2 performance will have to be better than the one he put forth in Week 1.
“There’s obviously a lot that we need to work on it’s the first game of the season, so it’s a good learning experience. (Saskatchewan) played a great game. They came out and took it to us early and we just got to get better,” he said.
“It’s the first game and we weren’t sharp, that goes for everybody in this room. We have to focus up and have another great week of work and bring a better focus next week and if we do that I think we will be alright.”
In his first start as a Edmonton’s undisputed starting pivot, Reilly completed 17 of his 35 passes for 259 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
One of those three interceptions ended up being the turning point for the entire game. Pinned deep in his own end with no time left on the clock in the first half, Reilly tossed an ill-advised pass while under pressure that was picked and returned for a touchdown by Riders linebacker Rey Williams.
The score gave the Riders a 22-1 lead heading into the half, one which the Eskimos were never able to recover from.
Reilly believes the mistake was just one thing that he’ll have to correct while watching tape leading into their Week 2 clash with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
"That was a terrible decision by me and it cost our team,'' said Reilly. "I take pride in being the type of guy that learns from mistakes and that's not going to happen again.''
The start was the fourth of Reilly’s career and while it wasn’t exactly a gem, Esks head coach Kavis Reed said that type of outing is expected from a quarterback of Reilly’s stature.
“With a young QB you’re going to have to make sure you manage him as well as the football game and from that perspective I am going to look at that. Mike is in his fourth start and we knew that he was going to do some very good things but we knew that he was going to have to learn on the fly as well.
“There is little to any doubt that he is the guy, there is no question about that. We have to do things differently to make sure we help him out in terms of his growth in his process.”
Much like everything in football, Reilly’s progress in Edmonton will take time.
“This is an education game; this is one of those ones where you dissect the situation. I look at my management and I look at the play calling and performance and go from there.”
Esks offensive lineman Matt O’Donnell thinks it’s just a matter of getting back to work and coming together as a team.
"We've got a lot to work on as a team and as unit,'' O'Donnell told the Canadian Press Tuesday after a long practice in sweltering 30 C temperatures at Commonwealth Stadium.
"We've just got to come together as a team, limit turnovers, limit mistakes (and) limit penalties.''
"But) we've got to come together as a team and not turn on each other.''
At practice Tuesday, Reed was part X's and O's tactician and part psychologist. He walked amongst his players during exercises, shaking hands, keeping spirits up.
By the end of the practice he stood at midfield and hollered at the waves of players sprinting, or in the case of some linemen, wheezing, past him from sideline to sideline in conditioning drills.

No slowing down: Calvillo, Burris not showing age
TORONTO -- It seems that age is but a state of mind for Canadian Football League quarterbacks.
Two of the best, Anthony Calvillo of the Montreal Alouettes and Henry Burris of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, are 40 and 38 respectively as the 2013 season kicked off.
The 39-year-old Kerry Joseph, who began his career with the Ottawa Renegades, is hanging on as a backup with the Edmonton Eskimos.
Anthony Calvillo and Henry Burris took little time to start spreading the ball around, combining for 625 yards and 4 touchdowns in Week 1.
"Anthony is in phenomenal shape for his age," Montreal general manager Jim Popp said. "He's playing at the highest level, MVP level.
"So we don't really look at his age. When the day comes that he says 'I'm retiring, I just can't do any more on the field,' then it becomes more of a panic button scenario."
There was speculation last winter that Calvillo may pack it in when Marc Trestman left after five years to become head coach of the NFL Chicago Bears, but Calvillo was back in camp under new coach Dan Hawkins.
And why not? He completed 333 passes to reach the 5,000-yard mark for the seventh time in his career in 2012, despite playing through an injury to his left (non-throwing) shoulder that hindered his throwing motion and required off-season surgery.
Two seasons ago, the East Los Angeles native broke a handful of passing records set by Damon Allen, who played until he was 44.
Calvillo entered his 20th CFL season last week, his 16th with Montreal, with 5,777 completions for 78,494 yards and 449 touchdowns.
If he stays healthy, he should top 10,000 pass attempts, 6,000 completions and 80,000 yards this season.
If he doesn't stay upright, Montreal could be in big trouble. His backup in recent years, Adrian McPherson, is gone, and he will have third-stringer Josh Neiswander and rookie Tanner Marsh as contingency plans.
"We're always preparing people," said Popp. "The truth is you don't know what you have until you have to play someone else and see how they perform."
Burris is also coming off a year that saw him establish career highs in completions (391), attempts (604), yards (5,367) and TDs (43) for the Ticats. Burris has thrown for over 4,000 yards in eight of the last nine years.
Bringing in the experienced Kent Austin as head coach may be what Hamilton needs to get a talented group to succeed on the field and keep Burris at his top level in his 15th CFL campaign.
"He had a really good camp, he really did," Austin said prior to last week's opener in Toronto. "He came in in great shape, he was stronger than last year from what I understand.
"He threw the ball pretty well most of camp. He's really smart, he takes coaching, he wants to be good and wants to win."
Not only did Austin win Grey Cups as a player, he's also excelled with veteran quarterbacks as a coach. He was the Toronto Argonauts offensive co-ordinator in '04 when Allen was a Grey Cup champion and CFL MVP and was the Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach in '07 when Joseph earned the same double achievement.
"He's brought success to quarterbacks and also brought success to his teams," Burris said. "He's a great coach and both Damon and Kerry have told me I'm going to enjoy working with him."
Last week, Burris proved that he was picking up right where he left off in 2012, generating 361 yards and 3 touchdowns on 24 of 37 passing in Toronto.Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....Comment

Saskatchewan’s win in Edmonton last week snapped 5-game losing skid from LY; Riders lost last two games on Taylor Field, are 3-4 overall in last seven at home- they were outgained by 64 yards in Edmonton last week, but were +4 in turnovers. Last eight Calgary games, five of last six Roughrider games went over the total.
Edmonton (0-1) @ Hamilton (0-1)—Home side won five of last six Eskimo-TiCat games, with Edmonton losing 51-8 (+3) here LY, then winning 35-20 (-2.5) at home three weeks later. Last five series games were all decided by 15+ points. TiCats gave up 489 yards in 39-34 (+3.5) loss in SkyDome last week, allowing 10.8 yards per pass attempt- they’ve lost five of last six games overall, but have won three of last four at home. Eskimos were down 22-1 at halftime of 39-18 home loss to Riders last week, turning ball over four times (-4), allowing Saskatchewan 144 rushing yards. Over is 7-0-1 in last eight Edmonton games, 8-3 in last eleven Hamilton tilts.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Montreal Alouettes (-7, 52)
Dan Hawkins began his tenure as coach of the Montreal Alouettes by defeating the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and spoiling the debut of their new stadium. The Blue Bombers (0-1) will be out for revenge when they visit Montreal (1-0) on Thursday. Hawkins relied heavily on quarterback Anthony Calvillo and receiver S.J. Green in his first CFL regular-season game, but the Blue Bombers got to Calvillo on numerous occasions and the veteran pivot finished the game with tape on his throwing hand.
Winnipeg held a nine-point lead heading into the fourth quarter last week but was unable to produce offense in the final 15 minutes en route to a 38-33 setback. Blue Bombers quarterback Buck Pierce threw an interception on his final play of the game but can build on his 258-yard performance as Winnipeg looks for a rare road victory. The Blue Bombers' defense averaged 29.5 points against per game last year.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (0-1): James Green has rejoined the team with fellow linebacker Rene Stephan out for a month with a hamstring injury. Green spent three campaigns with the Blue Bombers but was released after last season and spent the previous week helping the effort in his hometown of Calgary following devastating floods in the area. Defensive end Zach Anderson was promoted to the main roster and former Winnipeg defensive lineman Marquis Frazier was added to the practice roster with JT Gilmore suffering from a calf injury.
ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-0): Rookie Tyron Carrier recorded Montreal’s first punt return for a touchdown in three years in the season opener. Carrier, who finished with 103 yards on six returns, gives the Alouettes a special teams threat they have lacked in recent seasons. Green finished with 119 yards, although no other Montreal receiver accounted for more than 37. The latter number could be a concern, considering how pass-heavy the Alouettes have been in recent seasons.

* Blue Bombers are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 Thursday games.
* Alouettes are 5-0 ATS in their last five games in Week 2.

Toronto Argonauts at B.C. Lions (-6, 52.5)
The BC Lions opened this season like they finished the last one: with a loss to the Calgary Stampeders. The Lions (0-1) will attempt to put that season-opening setback behind them when they host the defending Grey Cup champion Toronto Argonauts (1-0) on Thursday. Lions quarterback Travis Lulay finished Week 1 with three touchdown passes on 283 passing yards and added 55 rushing yards, but BC could not overcome a 25-point first-half deficit en route to a 44-32 loss.
Toronto posted a 39-34 triumph over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to open its season after raising the banner for its Grey Cup victory. Quarterback Ricky Ray’s 368 passing yards and four touchdown tosses paced the Argonauts, who also received 112 rushing yards from Grey Cup Most Outstanding Player Chad Kackert. Toronto’s defense allowed just three points in the second half of Friday’s victory.

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (1-0): Chad Owens, who set a professional football record for all-purpose yards last season with 3,863, amassed 235 combined yards in Week 1. Fellow slotback Jason Barnes caught two touchdown passes to go with 85 total yards and wide receiver Spencer Watt scored his fourth career touchdown, giving Toronto depth in its receiving corps. Kicker Swayze Waters is expected to miss at least two weeks with an injury suffered on Friday, leading the Argonauts to re-sign veteran Noel Prefontaine.
ABOUT THE LIONS (0-1): Wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux led the team with 103 receiving yards, surpassing the 2,000-yard plateau in his career to start his third CFL season. Arceneaux, who last played for BC in 2010, spent three seasons trying to earn a spot on an NFL team, trying out with Minnesota, Washington and the New York Jets. Arceneaux’s return helped blunt the loss of CFL all-time receiving yards leader Geroy Simon, who was traded in the off-season. K Hugh O’Neill missed an extra point attempt in the first half of Week 1, but converted the next two and made a 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

* Argonauts are 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games.
* Lions are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 home games.
* Over is 5-1 in Argonauts last six games overall.

2013 CFL.ca Game Notes: A look at Week 2
TORONTO -- One week down, 18 to go.
After a high-scoring Week 1 where 277 points – the third highest opening week total in history – were scored, Week 2 gets underway with a Thursday night double header.
The Als and Blue Bombers kick things off with a rematch of last week’s entertaining clash, one that saw Montreal escape Winnipeg with a narrow 38-33 win.
Later that night, the Argonauts and Lions go head-to-head in a matchup of the last two Grey Cup winners in Vancouver.
On Friday night, two bitter rivals renew hostilities at Mosaic Stadium, with the Riders hosting the Calgary Stampeders.
Closing out Week 2 will be the Tiger-Cats and Eskimos, who meet at Hamilton’s temporary new home Alumni Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

By the Numbers:
Scoring surplus: There were 277 points scored in the first four games for an average of 69.3 per game. That made it the THIRD HIGHEST scoring opening week in CFL history. Only 1992 (74.3) and 1990 (70.0) were higher.
Holding onto the ball: The biggest change over the last two seasons has been a 19 per cent drop in the number of turnovers per game. In 2012, there were just 4.1 giveaways per game – an all-time low for any season in CFL history. This trend continued as only 15 turnovers were committed in the first four games.
A passing league: In 2012, teams rushed only 18.9 times per game on average – the second-lowest total in CFL history (1993 was 17.6). The league-wide pass efficiency rating of 93.5 ranked #1 all-time, only the second year ever it has been 90+. The league-wide pass efficiency rating for Week 1 of 2013 was a stunning 98.3.
A Golden Age for FG kickers: Over the last two seasons, CFL field goal kickers have made 81.6 per cent of their attempts. Prior to 2011, the league average since 1954 was just 66 per cent, and as recently as 2005 it was just 71 per cent. In Week 1 kickers pushed that rate even higher to 18-of-21 for an 85.7 per cent mark.
Returners on the rise: In 2012 returners brought back 14 kicks for TDs, up by 6 from 2011. There were NO kickoff return TDs in 2012, marking the first time since 2001 that none occurred. However, there were three kicks returned for TDs in Week 1 including the first kickoff since September 2011, when Hamilton’s Marcus Thigpen brought one back.
Comeback kids: In 72 regular season games in 2012, 36 of the wins were by teams coming from behind. The largest comeback of the year was by Hamilton who trailed Saskatchewan by 19 before bouncing back to win 35-34. A total of 40 of the 72 games were decided in the final 3:00. Two teams came from behind to win during the opening week of 2013.
No sacks zone: There were 120 possessions in Week 1, 13 of which saw a team allow a sack. None of those 13 drives produced a touchdown for the offence. On the other 107 drives there were 25 TDs scored – a big drop off.
BC 1K: This week marks the Lions’ 1,000th regular season game in their 60-year history. They have an active 6-game home win streak heading into their game with defending champion Toronto this week.
Calgary dominance: In Week 1 the Stampeders had the league’s top rusher (Jon Cornish 172 yards), tackler (Jonathan Hefney 10 tackles), special teams tackler (Karl McCartney with 4), QB sacker (Charles Hughes 3). They scored the most points (44), and drew the fewest penalties (3). They stretched their regular season win streak to 5 games.
Offensive excellence: In the CFL the two-and-out is a fact of life in three down football. The CFL averages about 11 of them per game. In Week 1 Toronto and Hamilton combined for only 3, piling up over 930 yards of net offence in the process.
Going Streaking:
Calgary: Have won 5-straight regular season games
Toronto: Have six consecutive wins in all games including the 2012 post-season.
BC: Has a current 6-game home winning streak in regular season.
Saskatchewan: Got back on track last week snapping a 5-game overall losing streak.
Fast starts:
Toronto: Began both the first and second halves last week with back-to-back TD drives.
Saskatchewan: Also began both the first and second halves last week with back-to-back TD drives. They scored 28 of their 32 offensive points on those 4 drives including 233 of their 330 net yards for the game.
Hamilton: Had 3 TDs and a FG in their first 4 possessions, but only scored 3 points on their final 7 drives.
Calgary: Has now outscored BC 40-0 in the first quarter alone in their last two meetings.
Roster Moves:
After missing Week 1, Montreal Alouettes running back Brandon Whitaker is expected to make his first appearance since going down with a torn ACL in Week 12 of last season.
Fullback Patrick Lavoie is also expected to make his 2013 debut. Sitting out for the Als will be returner Tyron Carrier with a shoulder injury.
In Saskatchewan, receiver Geroy Simon will miss his second-straight game with a lower-body injury.
The Argos will have an old face handling their kicking duties, as Noel Prefontaine will take over for the injured Swayze Waters.
Kicker Paul McCallum and linebacker Solomon Elimimian are both expected to be back in the Lions' lineup after missing Week 1 with injuries.
Milestone Watch:
Receiving Leaders Updated: Three of the CFL’s all-time leading receivers are active for 2013 (Geroy Simon #1, Arland Bruce III #12 at 10,809 yards, and Nik Lewis #13 at 10,529 yards). With 29 yards Bruce can pass Tom Scott (10,837) for the #11 spot. Other active players in the Top 50 are: Jamel Richardson at #39 (7,877) and Terrence Edwards (WPG) at #45 with 7,088. Lewis’ consecutive games streak with at least one catch stands at 158 games.
Rushing leaders updated: With most of the league’s all-time rushing leaders now retired, and the transition from early rushing precedence to the “passing game”, little impact will be made this year. The Top 3 active rushers are all quarterbacks: Henry Burris (HAM) at #45 with 4,771 yards, Kerry Joseph #53 (4,470) and Anthony Calvillo #73 (3,662). The leading active rusher among running backs is Jon Cornish (CGY) with 3,499 yards at #81 all-time after leading the CFL with 172 last week.
