    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Pirate rookie Gerrit Cole is now 3-0, 3.44 after beating the Angels-- he allowed two runs in 6.2 IP in Anaheim, in his third big league start.

-- Rough year so far for Cole Hamels (2-11, 4.50); he lost 4-3 to the Mets Friday night in Philadelphia.

-- Toronto won its ninth game in row, 7-6 over Baltimore, rallying back from down 6-4 in 7th inning. Jays get Jose Reyes back next week.

-- Bartolo Colon won his 7th consecutive start, beating Seattle for second time in six days, 6-3 at Safeco Park.

-- Yoenis Cespedes homered twice Friday; he has 15 HRs in 48 games as an outfielder, one homer in 14 games as the DH. Get that man his glove!!!

-- Southwest Airlines grounded flights late Friday night because of a glitch in their computer system; hope they have it fixed by July 11.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............

    13) According to footballguys.com, 27 of the 64 NFL coordinators this season (42.2%) will be in their first year in that job this season; only 13 of 32 teams have the same head coach and both coordinators as last season.

    12) Was new Arkansas football coach Bret Bielema born to be coach of the Razorbacks? He grew up on a pig farm in Illinois, after all.

    11) Buffalo Bills are going into this season with Kevin Kolb and EJ Manuel as their QBs? Kolb always gets hurt; Manuel wasn’t that great in college. Buffalo fans might be clamoring for Tarvaris Jackson to come back by Columbus Day.

    10) I haven’t played a round of golf in 15 years, but from watching golf on TV, it sounds like slow play on public courses has become an issue. I was an awful golfer, but I played fast!!!!

    9) Not to kick someone when they’re down, but the numbers are staggering: in Games 1-5 of the NBA Finals, Danny Green made 35-53 from the floor, an amazing 25-38 behind the arc. He might’ve been the MVP had the series ended after five games.

In games 6-7, Green was 2-19 from the floor, 0-8 inside the arc, 2-11 outside it. Yikes.

    8) How many times have the Mariners led 8-1 with Felix Hernandez on the mound and lost? Happened to them Thursday night. King Felix gave up 12 hits on 24 balls in play, only six misses on 45 swings; not good.

    7) Coming into Friday’s action, Oakland SS Jed Lowrie was batting .125 his first time up, .283 his second time, .358 his third time; American League average for those scenarios are .253/.259/.270.

    6) Along those lines, AL hitters are batting just .242 against relief pitchers so far this season, as they only see those guys one time per night.

    5) Flipping thru the movie channels late one night this week, I stumbled across that horrible Adam Sandler movie where Rex Ryan has a cameo role. You know what? Rex isn’t a bad actor!!!

I thank the Lord he isn’t the Rams’ coach (he has a brother who lives in St Louis) but the man does have a sense of humor.

    4) Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals will be the first summer NHL game since the ’75 Finals, where it was so warm inside the building, players on Sabres, Flyers had to skate around the ice carrying sheets, trying to get the fog above the ice to go away.

You think I’m making this up, but I’m not—that happened.

    3) Mississippi State-UCLA will play best-of-3 for the college baseball national title starting Monday in Omaha.

    2) So I’m reading these people tweet Thursday about Aaron Hernandez and how his absence would hurt their fantasy football team and I’m thinking, “People, this is a murder investigation; someone freakin’ died!!! Lets worry about football in September.” Good grief.

    1) Our thoughts, prayers to people in Calgary, where floods have forced 75,000 people to leave their homes. Mother Nature is in a bad mood.

NCAAF Games of the Year: Wolverines FG dogs vs. Spartans

Odds are out for the biggest games of the college football season. Covers Expert Matt Fargo gives you his insight into some of the marquee matchups and predicts where the odds could move before kickoff.

      NCAAF Week 10:
Michigan Wolverines at Michigan State Spartans (-3)

      Past History:
      Michigan 6-4 SU, 3-6-1 ATS, 4-6 O/U since 2003

      Early look at the Wolverines:
Michigan took a step backwards last season as injuries to some key players stung. This is the first time in four years Denard Robinson will not be the quarterback so, not only do they need to replace him but also 10 other starters on both sides of the ball. This includes replacing three starters on the offensive line as well as two All-Big Ten defensive backs. There are a lot of questions entering the season.

      Early look at the Spartans:
A preseason national title contender, the Spartans home loss to Notre Dame set the tone for a disappointing season. They would go on to lose five more games but those came by a total of just 13 points. Defensively, this team will be one of the best in the country again and the running game will be the strength on offense. To jump to the next level, a passing game must be established.

      Where this line will move:
If Michigan State upsets the Irish in Notre Dame, it could enter this game with an 8-0 record. It needs to find a way to win close games, something it didn't do last season. A 2-5 home record last season may keep the action low on the Spartans but they will be 5-0 at home coming into this one so we should see a higher number come Week 10.

Four games, three OT finishes; makes you want to take underdogs, no? Bruins won 11 of last 14 games overall (4-3 in OT games) since rallying from down 4-1 at the 11:00 mark in Game 7 of 1st round vs Toronto. Boston allowed one goal in the two games they won in series so far; they allowed 4-6 goals in the losses, both OT games. Chicago is 5-0 so far in playoffs when game goes over total, 4-5 if game stays under, 3-2 if total pushes. Hawks won nine of last 12 games since being down 3-1 in Detroit series. Chicago finally scored on power play last game, their only goal on last 24 power plays- they're 10-2 at home in playoffs, with last three home games all going to OT. Bruins are 5-4 when playoff game goes over- they won last seven that stayed under the total.

Bruins at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Chicago Blackhawks (-147, 5)

        Best-of-seven series tied 2-2.

Corey Crawford did his best to pick up for his ailing glove with a funny quip. On Saturday, the Chicago Blackhawks will look for the goaltender's performance to do the talking on Saturday when they host the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final. Crawford has yielded 12 goals in the series - with eight coming from the glove side.

"Last series they were talking about my blocker," Crawford joked on Friday. "Both sides are bad, I guess." The netminder could afford to make light of the situation after defenseman Brent Seabrook scored 9:51 into overtime as the Presidents' Trophy-winning Blackhawks evened the series at two games apiece with 6-5 triumph on Wednesday. Venturing past regulation has been the norm in this series, as three of the four contests have been decided after 60 minutes - with Game 1 spanning into triple overtime.

        TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS

        ABOUT THE BRUINS:
Boston takes considerable pride in its fourth line - or "Merlot" line, if you will. So, when Gregory Campbell suffered a broken leg while blocking a shot in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference final, coach Claude Julien has been left to mix and match players to fill the void. Rookie Carl Soderberg donned the merlot-colored sweater during Friday's practice, while Kaspars Daugavins wore the green jersey which signifies regularly scratched players. "Just trying something else here," Julien said of Soderberg, who hasn't played in the postseason. "I'll make that decision (Saturday). But just (getting) a different look at what that would look like, that's all."

        ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS:
Marian Hossa returned after being a late scratch prior to Game 3 by collecting one assist and mustering four shots on goal in just over 19 minutes of ice time on Wednesday. The veteran admitted that he was limited in that contest due to the upper-body injury and even missed practice on Friday. Despite his absence, coach Joel Quenneville admitted that "Hossa is fine" and didn't seem overly concerned. "(We're) very happy to use him. I think everybody has different limitations, but everybody is giving it their all."

        TRENDS:

        * Bruins are 3-7 in their last 10 Saturday games.
        * Under is 5-0 in Bruins’ last five after allowing five goals or more in their previous game.
        * Under is 6-1 in Blackhawks’ last seven when their opponent scores five goals or more in their previous game.

        OVERTIME

        1. Boston's Patrice Bergeron has scored three of his team's four power-play goals versus Chicago. His nine tallies have him tied with fellow C David Krejci for the team lead.

        2. Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and RW Patrick Kane were reunited on the same line and scored just over two minutes apart in Game 4.

        3. Bruins C Brad Marchand has failed to secure a point in the Stanley Cup final.

Life after hoops: Catch up on MLB's best/worst bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NBA season is over and NHL is soon to follow. Now what are you betting on?

If you’ve been ignoring baseball for hoops and hockey, let us get you caught up on what you missed through the first three months of the MLB season.

                  Bucs bets are the best

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been in this position the past few seasons, stringing together a nice stretch of games at discount moneylines and jumping to the top of the MLB breadwinners. However, there is usually a tipping point for the Bucs. Last year it was September, when the Pirates went 7-21.

Pittsburgh has won +17.67 units on the moneyline and +17.35 units on the runline (baseball’s version of the spread), but bettors are waiting for the other shoe to drop. The All-Star break has been a reliable yield sign for Bucs backers, with the club going 87-140 following the Mid-Summer Classic over the past three seasons.

                  Live and Die in L.A.

Despite having massive payrolls, rosters packed with All-Star talent and some of the best baseball weather in the world, Los Angeles’ MLB clubs just plain stink. And if you’ve been betting either the Angles or the Dodgers, that’s the smell of money burning.

Los Angeles’ two teams are currently ranked as the two worst bets in the majors, with the Dodgers eating up -19.55 units and the Halos wasting -19.34 units heading into Friday. The pair are a combined 63-81 and still command hefty price tags on the moneyline based on name alone.

                  AL West totally awesome

The American League West is home to the best over and under teams in the big leagues.

While the Angels are draining bankrolls on the moneyline, they’re making a mint for over backers with a 42-30-1 over/under mark heading into Friday. The Halos rank 10th in scoring (4.55 runs per game) but allow 4.30 runs against (26th) an outing.

On the other end of the scale, the Texas Rangers have become the best under play in baseball with a 26-43-4 over/under count. The Rangers have actually leaned toward the over versus AL West rivals, going 15-14-3 O/U, but are 11-29-1 over/under (72 percent under) against the rest of the majors.

                  Brewers bust on runline

Good thing there’s plenty of beer in Miller Park. The Brewers are one of the worst bets in baseball, burning through more than 15 units on the moneyline but doing real damage to runline fans. Milwaukee is a costly -20.23 units against MLB’s version of the spread with a 27-44 ATS record.

Things aren’t getting any better for the Brew Crew either. Milwaukee just dropped a series to the lowly Houston Astros and could be without slugger Ryan Braun for longer than expected after injuring his thumb. The Brewers welcome the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves this weekend.

NASCAR betting: Toyota/ Save Mart 350 preview

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series shifts to the road course at Sonoma Raceway this Sunday for the Toyota/ Save Mart 350.

                    Here is our betting preview:

                    Favorite: Marcos Ambrose (+500)

Ambrose has five starts at the road course and has finished in the top-10 in four of them. He has the second-fastest average green flag speed of 89.807 mph, the third-best driver rating (106.8) with an average running position of 10.9.

                    Live dog: Jeff Gordon (+1000)

Gordon leads all drivers with most wins (5), poles (5), top-5 finishes (12) and top-10s (16) at Sonoma. He has had a tough year to date, but this is his best chance to turn things around. Gordon has led more laps at Sonoma than any active driver (450).

                    Long shot: Greg Biffle (+3500)

Biffle is coming off a huge win at Michigan and has had success recently at Sonoma, logging four finishes of seventh or better at the track. He has momentum and good value Sunday.

                    Key stat:
A driver has not won from the pole at Sonoma since Gordon did it in 2004.

                    Notable quotable:

“This is one of the hardest road courses I have raced on. It’s very technical and is pretty fast too. These cars are not made for this track, so you really need to wrestle them around a bit. I am not scared to do that but just need that little racing luck to get into victory lane. We’ve been so close that a win can’t be too far away.” Marcos Ambrose on Sonoma.

Odds to win the Toyota/Save Mart 350 courtesy of Bet365:

                    Marcos Ambrose +500
                    Tony Stewart +650
                    Juan Pablo Montoya +650
                    Kurt Busch +900
                    Jimmie Johnson +900
                    Jeff Gordon +1000

After 15 weeks of running in circles with only left turns, the NASCAR Sprint Cup series right gets to turn right this week at Sonoma's 1.99-mile 10-turn road course, a track that highlights a drivers true ability to drive race cars. Because some drivers are less skilled at driving on road courses, there isn't as much excitement out them when they visit one of the two road circuits on the schedule.

It even gets so bad for a few of them that car owners hire a road specialist for a race to drive their cars. Although the hired guns have never won a Cup race before, they usually run well and take a car that would have been doomed to a 30th-place finish or worse into a respectable finish position. From a fans perspective, some of the greatest racing on the season occurs when watching these hired guns, with all kinds of skill on their playground, mix it up with the regulars.

From a betting perspective, you can narrow down the list of candidates to win at about 10 drivers, or just under 25 percent of the entire field. On a normal race weekend, there about 18 legitimate candidates, but the road course is the variable that really puts a major gap between those contenders.

The top candidate to win this week is Marcos Ambrose. Although he has never won at Sonoma, he has won the past two races at Watkins Glen. The two road courses are about as different as they can get with Sonoma being more technical featuring elevation changes while Watkins Glen runs much faster. Ambrose has finished eighth or better in his last four starts at Sonoma. His skills on the roads come from the Australia V8 Super Series, which is much tougher than anything he seen in NASCAR. To him, these races have become rather simple. His two road course wins are the only two wins he's had in NASCAR.

The same can be said for Juan Pablo Montoya, who has yet to win on any track other than a road course. He won at Sonoma in 2007 during his rookie season, and then won at Watkins Glen in 2010. Montoya's chances of winning become even stronger this week due to the upgrade in the entire program over the past two months. His skills on the road courses have never been questioned over his illustrious career. Not many drivers can say they have won the Monaco Grand Prix, especially those driving in NASCAR.

Because of their past excellence in other series, Ambrose and Montoya stand alone as the most technical road racers, but a few Cup drivers that have success on the ovals have also found the roads to be to their liking. Jeff Gordon is a five-time winner at Sonoma, which is the closest track located to his birth-place in Vallejo, CA. He hasn't won these since 2006, but hasn't finished worse than ninth in his last six starts there.

Tony Stewart took over the road racing crown from Gordon for a while between events at Sonoma and Watkins Glen, but he captured the last of his two Sonoma victories in 2005. He's been runner-up twice since then, including last year.

The most interesting choice this week is Kurt Busch because of how fast he's been everywhere this season. His outstanding practice times haven't translated into good finishes the past few weeks, but we should expect a great run on Sunday. He won at Sonoma while driving for Penske Racing in 2011, and then came in third last season while driving for his current underfunded No. 51 program. He's always been good at Sonoma and should be considered one of the favorites.

                      Top-5 Finish Prediction:

                      1) #42 Juan Pablo Montoya (12/1)
                      2) #24 Jeff Gordon (7/1)
                      3) #9 Marcos Ambrose (4/1)
                      4) #78 Kurt Busch (10/1)
                      5) #14 Tony Stewart (7/1)
