    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Six college football teams that lost most '12 games to injuries/suspensions:

    6) Maryland 37-- Just 6-18 in two years under Edsall.

    5) Tulane 39-- Haven't been to a bowl game since 2002.

    4) Ohio U 41-- Bobcats are 36-18 last four years under Solich.

    3) Arkansas 44-- Have brutal 4-week stretch in games 5-8.

    2) UMass 45-- Went 1-11 in first year in I-AA/MAC.

    1) Colorado State 53-- Over last decade, Rams are 1-12 as road favorite.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

    13) New rule that takes getting used to: When a pitching coach goes to talk to his pitcher, if the pitcher doesn't speak English, the coach is allowed to bring an interpreter to the mound, which makes the visit longer.

    12) Coming into Wednesday's baseball, there had been 960 games played in 2013, so thats 1,290 starting pitchers: of those 1,290, only 23 threw 120+ pitches in a game, as pitchers are protected by their teams.

    11) Turn to college baseball, there is a kid at NC State named Carlos Rodon who has made 33 starts for the Wolfpack,. and threw 120+ pitches in 15 of the 33 games. College coaches aren't as protective as pro teams.

    10) Monday-Tuesday was first time EVER the Tampa Bay Rays hit 4+ HRs in consecutive games. Ever.

    9) Is the NHL the only pro league where teams announce trades while the playoffs are going on? Flyers-Islanders announced a trade; you don't see that in other sports, they wait until the season is over to announce deals.

    8) Former Syracuse assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine is suing ESPN for $11M for defamation, after ESPN ran a story over and over about Fine being an accused pedophile, which was never proven to be true. Fine's career was ruined nonetheless, therefore the lawsuit, which is in federal court.

    7) Louisville Cardinals are playing five non-Saturday football games this fall; tremendous national TV exposure should amp up their recruiting.

    6) Toronto Blue Jays used 12 starting pitchers in their first 63 games.

    5) Five road starts for Barry Zito: 0-4, 14.51.
Eight home starts for Barry Zito: 4-1, 1.93. Go figure.

    4) A's 1B Brandon Moss is only 5 for his 40, but all five hits were HRs.

    3) Arkansas' football schedule in a 4-week stretch from September 28 to October 19: Texas A&M/@ Florida/South Carolina/@ Alabama. Yikes.

    2) Wow, its really been five years since Eldrick Woods won a major?

    1) Dodgers-Arizona had major brawl Tuesday, so of course the next day MLB announces the teams will open the 2014 seasion by playing a couple games that count in Australia. Hope they take separate planes.

NCAAF Games of the Year: Irish have tough sked ahead of USC

Odds are out for the biggest games of the college football season. Covers Expert Jesse Schule gives you his insight into some of the marquee matchups and predicts where the odds could move before kickoff.

      October 19, 2013:
USC Trojans at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-5)

      Past history:
USC is 3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS since 2008.

      Early look at the Trojans:
USC started last season ranked No. 1, yet they finished the season outside the Top 25. After finishing with a 7-6 record last season, they lose Matt Barkley and Robert Woods. The good news for the Trojans is that they have a fairly light schedule heading into this matchup with Notre Dame.

      Early look at the Irish:
The Irish ran the table in 2012, but along the way they were fortunate to win some close games that easily could have gone the other way. They lost Manti Te'o to the NFL draft and it looks like they will also lose Everett Golson because of academic issues.

      Where this line will move:
The Irish have a tough schedule, hosting Oklahoma, Michigan State and facing Michigan on the road prior to this meeting with the Trojans. If they struggle against these tough opponents, we could see this line come down a point or two.

        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Thursday, June 13

Parker strained a hamstring in Game 3, returned for 1:30 but left because the game wasn't close. Impossible for us to tell how hampered he is; it is possible they don't even know. Heat's spread results in last nine games are LWLWLWLWL; Miami won and covered game following its last 11 losses; last time they lost consecutive games was Jan 8-10, at Indiana, Portland. Heat is 3-23 in franchise history at this site. James took six foul shots in first three series games; he needs to go to basket more. Five of last six Miami games stayed under total; six of Spurs' last seven home games went over. Spurs are 7-1 at home in playoffs; Green is leading scorer in series thru first three games- go figure.

Heat at Spurs: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs (-1.5, 187)

        Spurs lead best-of-seven series 2-1.

The status of San Antonio point guard Tony Parker is up in the air as the host Spurs attempt to take a 3-1 lead over the Miami Heat in Thursday’s Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Parker underwent an MRI exam on Wednesday and the results displayed a mild strain of his right hamstring and he’s listed as day to day. Miami attempts to rebound from a 113-77 loss that stands as the third-largest margin of defeat in Finals history.

Heat forward LeBron James is blaming himself for the 36-point loss after he scored under 20 points for the third consecutive game. He promises a much better effort in Game 4. “I take full responsibility for our team’s performance (Tuesday) night,” James said. “Me as a leader, I can’t afford to perform like I did and expect us to win on the road. It’s that simple. So I’m putting all the pressure on my chest, on my shoulders, to come through for our team. That’s the way it is.” San Antonio made an NBA Finals record 16 3-pointers on Tuesday and guard Danny Green is 16-for-23 from behind the arc in the series after making seven in Game 3.

        TV:
        9 p.m. ET, ABC

        ABOUT THE HEAT:
James is averaging a pedestrian 16.7 points and making just 38.9 percent of his field-goal attempts. The Heat were outscored by 32 points with him on the floor in Game 3, an embarrassing fact for the four-time NBA MVP. James isn’t receiving much help from center Chris Bosh, who hasn’t scored more than 13 points in the series and is averaging just 9.3 points over the past seven games. Guard Dwyane Wade also is having an underwhelming series, averaging 14.3 points. Veteran swingman Mike Miller scored 15 points on 5-of-5 3-point shooting in Game 3 and has made eight straight 3-pointers over the past two games. He is 10-for-11 shooting in the series, including 9-of-10 from 3-point range.

        ABOUT THE SPURS:
Parker’s ailing hamstring created more playing time for reserve Gary Neal, who made six 3-pointers and scored 24 points in Game 3. Neal and Green combined for 51 points and San Antonio also received a superb game from forward Kawhi Leonard, who had 14 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Leonard is averaging 11 points and 12 rebounds in the series and has excelled on the defensive end against James, frustrating the Miami star with his tenacious defense and long arms. “I’m studying my team concepts and just buying into our game plan,” Leonard said. “That’s all I’m doing – playing hard.” Leonard and power forward Tim Duncan both have grabbed 10 or more rebounds in all three games. Duncan is averaging 13.7 points and 13 rebounds.

        TRENDS:

        * Heat are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS loss.
        * Spurs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
        * Under is 19-6 in Heat last 25 vs. a team with a winning S.U. record.
        * Under is 22-6 in the last 28 meetings.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. San Antonio’s 113 points marked only the second time Miami allowed 100 or more points in 19 postseason games.

        2. Heat G Mario Chalmers was scoreless in Game 3 after leading Miami with 19 points in its Game 2 win.

        3. The Spurs are 26-for-52 from 3-point range over the past two games.

Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A relatively quiet day around major league parks Thursday, but still an opportunity to look at a pair of streaking pitchers and a pair of slumping hurlers.

                Streaking

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (9-3, 2.34 ERA)

Wainwright is one of the best starters in the National League and has won his last four starts and five of his last six. He's involved in a marquee matchup Thursday afternoon as the Cards are in New York to face the Mets. Matt Harvey gets the ball for the Mets.

Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies (7-2, 2.55 ERA)

The Phillies lefty has been on fire since early May and has recorded six wins in his last eight starts. His ERA over those last eight appearances is a sparkling 1.84.

                Slumping

Hiroki Kuroda, New York Yankees (6-5, 2.84 ERA)

The Yankees started the season winning seven of Kuroda's first nine starts. Since then, they've lost his last four starts. Kuroda has an ERA of 5.23 in those starts.

Ervin Santana, Kansas City Royals (4-5, 2.99 ERA)

Santana started the season in stellar fashion, but he has slowed down recently. The Royals are 1-6 in his last seven starts and they have scored four or more runs in just two of those outings.
