    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt has 57 RBI already; he's 9 for last 16 with RISP, with 20 RBI. An MVP candidate.

-- Kansas transfer swingman Anrio Adams will wind up at UNLV; he did not crack the Jayhawks' lineup, but could help the Rebels.

-- Former Indiana Hoosier Mo Creek transferred to George Washington, where he can play this fall; he'll help the Colonials.

-- Josh Donaldson hit a grand slam, Josh Reddick pulled a HR back from over the fence in 9th inning as A's won 4-3 in Chicago.

-- Yasiel Puig homered again; he's the second player since 1900 to homer five times in his first nine MLB games (Mike Jacobs, '05 Mets).

-- Francisco Liriano is 4-2, 1.75 for the Pirates after beating the Cubs 2-0 in Wrigley. He was a tremendoius signing for Pittsburgh.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

    13) Early lines have Alabama a 6-point favorite to avenge LY’s loss to Texas A&M; every other Crimson Tide game, they’re favored by at least 11.5 points. Bama has now been favored to win its last 41 games, an amazing streak of excellence.

    12) From a scheduling standpoint, the strangest college football game this coming season might be Boston College at New Mexico State November 9 in Las Cruces. Its not that weird that the teams are playing, but why is BC travelling and not the Aggies?

    11) Bruins’ center Greg Campbell broke his fibula while blocked a Penguins’ shot in Game 3; because he’s a hockey player, he finished his shift before going off the ice. Hockey players are true tough guys.

    10) Last time Miami Heat lost consecutive games was January 8-10; they’ve won the game after their last ten losses, all by 10+ points.

    9) Not only is Rutgers basketball coach Eddie Jordan working hard to put his program together, he’s also going to class to get his undergraduate degree, which he never got when he played at Rutgers in the late 70’s. Jordan says he’s a little less than a year away from getting his degree.

    8) SMU hoop coach Larry Brown ran two more players off the team this spring, telling them they’d never play if they stayed.

One kid went to Penn State, another to Boston U. Athletic scholarships are one-year renewable deals, so if a kid underperforms (or is poorly coached), coaches can get rid of them and get better players. Its an underreported story by mainstream media.

    7) Weird situation with the White Sox; because their kids are graduating from high school this weekend, manager Robin Ventura and bench coach Mark Parent are missing time, meaning Chicago will have three diffferent guys managing in three nights against the A's Thursday-Saturday.

Parent managed the team Thursday; pitching coach Don Cooper managed Friday's game and Ventura will be back on Saturday.

    6) Carmelo Anthony has still taken the most shots in this year’s NBA playoffs, and the Knicks haven’t played since the second round.

    5) Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies, Cubs’ TV announcers, worked Friday’s game from the outfield bleachers and were joined for a while by Cub owner Tom Ricketts, who really is trying to make the team better.

    4) Am curious to see the Marlins’ lineup when Giancarlo Stanton gets activated Monday; will they bat him ahead of or behind Marzell Ozuna? Miami should score some more runs with those two together in the lineup.

    3) Speaking of the Marlins, their ownership is so hideous, so greedy, they’ve ruined the team so badly that attendance in their beautiful new domed ballpark is only 984 fans a game above where it where was two years ago, when they played 15-20 miles away in Dolphins Stadium, with the threat of stormy weather a lot of days.

    2) Sounds the Eagles have a QB controversy, and the first game is still 13 weeks away. Coach has the right to decide who the starting QB is on his timetable, but rookie head coach Chip Kelly is going to be tested by this situation.

    1) Looks like its going to be a sloppy Belmont Stakes today; wonder if that will keep crowd down? They usually pack ‘em in Belmont Day.

Belmont Stakes betting: Horse-by-horse preview and picks

A field of 14 will head to the post for the 145th running of the Belmont Stakes Saturday. While the drama of the Triple Crown pursuit was dashed when Oxbow beat Orb in the Preakness three weeks ago, there's still an opportunity to score a nice payoff in this wide-open affair.

Here's a look at the field:

      1. Frac Daddy (Jockey-Alan Garcia) 30-1

Tailed off since delivering a solid two-year-old campaign and doesn't seem to figure here. Didn't like the slop in the Kentucky Derby but is working well. Overmatched?

      2. Freedom Child (Luis Saez) 8-1

Coming off a dominant win in the Peter Pan on a wet Belmont surface. New shooter in the field certainly has a shot here if he repeats that performance. Likes to go to the lead.

      3. Overanalyze (John Velazquez) 12-1

Todd Pletcher charge had a rough trip finishing and was 11th in the Kentucky Derby. His November win in the Remsen turned heads but he hasn't shown that speed since. Must improve to be in the picture.

      4. Giant Finish (Edgar Prado) 30-1

Lightly-raced New York-bred will be decided long shot. Has never posted the type of speed figures that the top contenders have recorded. Pass.

      5. Orb (Joel Rosario) 3-1

Kentucky Derby winner was a disappointing fourth in the Preakness, leaving questions about how good he truly is. Orb will be the Belmont favorite and it appears he can get the distance. Didn't like him in the Preakness but I think he'll bounce back here.

      6. Incognito (Irad Ortiz Jr.) 20-1

Incognito is by AP Indy, who won the Belmont. Was bred for the distance and trainer Kairan McLaughlin is having a solid meet. Charged home in the Peter Pan and could be a live long shot here.

      7. Oxbow (Gary Stevens) 5-1

Preakness winner under the veteran Stevens actually ran fairly well in the Kentucky Derby and then built an uncontested lead at Pimlico and rolled to the victory. Doesn't figure to get an easy lead here but he is still a player.

      8. Midnight Taboo (Garrett Gomez) 30-1

Another Pletcher hopeful is a major mystery. Has just one win in three starts and has never faced this type of field. Seems overmatched.

      9. Revolutionary (Javier Castellano) 9-2

Took a break after finishing third in the Kentucky Derby, which snapped a three-race winning streak. Hard-hitter was brilliant charging home to win the Withers and surely figures here.

      10. Will Take Charge (Jon Court) 20-1

It's interesting that this one seemed to be trainer D. Wayne Lukas' best hope in the Preakness but Oxbow was the winner. Will Take Charge had tough trips in the first two legs of the Triple Crown but hasn't shown much.

      11. Vyjack (Julien Leparoux) 20-1

Nothing went right for this one in the Kentucky Derby, where he finished 18th at 18-1. The distance seems to be too much for Vyjack, whose best race came at seven furlongs.

      12. Palace Malice (Mike Smith) 15-1

One of five Pletcher mounts in the field added blinkers for the Kentucky Derby, set a suicide pace and tired badly. Loses the blinkers for this race but the distance still seems to be a problem.

      13. Unlimited Budget (Rosie Napravnik) 8-1

Pletcher was extremely happy with recent work for this improving filly. Also worked well before taking third in the Kentucky Oaks. Pletcher won this race with the filly Rags to Riches.

      14. Golden Soul (Robby Albarado) 10-1

Off since taking second place in the Kentucky Derby. Has a great kick but how much the pace helped him in that race is the big question. Can't be discounted.

Picks: 1. Revolutionary. 2. Orb. 3. Golden Soul

NBA betting: How the Heat fare after Game 1 loss

The Miami Heat stumbled out of the gate in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, suffering a 92-88 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. If trends and history can tell us anything, however, it's that the Heat should bounce back in fine form in the second game of the series.

Miami has been able to respond to defeats in grand fashion recently. The Heat have followed each of their four postseason losses with a SU (straight up) and ATS (against the spread) victory and are 10-0 ATS in their last 10 games coming off a loss, dating back to the regular season.

In the "Big Three" Era, Miami is 8-3 SU and 6-5 ATS in the second game of a playoff series. The over is 5-4-2 in those 11 games.

In that same time frame, the Heat have lost the opening game of a series four times (including the loss Thursday). In the following game, the Heat have bounced back to the tune of a 3-0 ATS and SU record.

Here is a look at those Game 1 losses and Miami's response in the "Big Three" Era:

        2011 Eastern Conference Final

        Game 1: Bulls win 103-82.
        Game 2: Heat win 85-75 (Heat +2.5)

        2012 NBA Finals

        Game 1: Thunder win 105-94
        Game 2: Heat win 100-96 (Heat +5.5)

        2013 Eastern Conference Semifinal

        Game 1: Bulls win 93-86
        Game 2: Heat win 115-78 (Miami -13)

Miami is currently listed as a 6-point favorite for Game 2 Sunday.

Blackhawks can finish defending champ Kings off here; they're 8-1 at home in playoffs, and will have to lose next two home games not to go to finals. Kings at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks (-173, 4.5)

          Blackhawks lead best-of-seven series 3-1.

The Los Angeles Kings have lost all but one of their eight road contests this postseason. The reigning Stanley Cup champions will need to win Saturday's Game 5 of their Western Conference final against the host Chicago Blackhawks or see their bid for a repeat come to an end. The top-seeded Blackhawks shouldn't get too comfortable with a 3-1 series lead, having overcome that exact deficit to oust Original Six-rival Detroit in the second round.

"I think we can just go into (Game 5) with the mindset that we're down 3-1," Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said on Friday. "... I think that's when you play with the most desperation. We did that (in Game 4) and we know we have to raise our level of play even more (Saturday), so we'll go forward with that mentality." Speaking of Game 4, Marian Hossa scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period as the Blackhawks snapped fifth-seeded Los Angeles' 15-game home-winning streak with a 3-2 triumph on Thursday. Should Chicago emerged victorious on Saturday, it will face Boston in the Stanley Cup final. That contest would mark the first time thyat Original Six rivals will vie for the Cup since 1979, when Montreal defeated the New York Rangers.

          TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, CBC, RDS

          ABOUT THE KINGS:
Los Angeles has faced its fair share of adversity in the postseason, rallying from an 0-2 deficit against fourth-seeded St. Louis in the first round as well as winning a decisive seventh game against Pacific Division-rival San Jose in the second. Coach Darryl Sutter isn't interested in living in the past, however. "We're not looking at it like last night or 40 years ago or however long," he said. "We're looking at it like the next game only."

          ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS:
The Presidents' Trophy-winning Blackhawks will regain the services of Duncan Keith, who was suspended for Game 4 after his high-sticking incident with Jeff Carter. The 2010 Norris Trophy winner watched fellow blue-liners Niklas Hjalmarsson and Brent Seabrook turn in fine performances in his absence. Hjalmarsson notched a pair of assists and a plus-2 rating while logging nearly 25 minutes of ice time. Seabrook played nearly 26 1/2 minutes and registered three hits.

          TRENDS:

          * Blackhawks are 7-1 in their last eight Conference Finals games.
          * Under is 8-1-2 in Kings’ last 11 road games.
          * Kings are 3-9 in the last 12 meetings in Chicago.

          OVERTIME

          1. Chicago LW Bryan Bickell netted his eighth goal of the playoffs in Game 4 to extend his point streak to four contests.

          2. Los Angeles D Slava Voynov's six postseason goals are the most by a blue-liner since Vancouver's Ed Jovanovski had seven in 2003. Voynov has two goals and three assists in his last three contests.

          3. Kings C Mike Richards is "doubtful at best" to return for Saturday's tilt, according to Sutter. Richards has missed the last three games with a concussion following a brutal hit from Blackhawks C Dave Bolland.

MLB Top 5: Rebounding MLB starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We take a look at five MLB starting pitchers that are off to strong starts after disappointing 2012 campaigns.

Jason Marquis, San Diego Padres (7-2, 3.73)

                    Starter money: $658

Marquis has been bouncing around from team to team for the past couple seasons, but is now finding his groove in San Diego. The righty is one of the most profitable starters early in the season and bettors can always find value when he takes the hill for the Friars. Marquis has been an underdog in 10 of his 12 starts.

Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians (8-4, 3.57)

                    Starter money: $607

Masterson is enjoying a breakout season after posting an 11-15 record with a 4.93 ERA last campaign. The Indians are 9-4 in his 13 starts to date and his success can be attributed to a new pitch in his repertoire. The righty was mainly a two-pitch hurler prior to this season. He threw a fastball or changeup 95 percent of the time but has added a slider for 2013. Masterson is throwing the new pitch over 25 percent of the time and is getting significantly more ground-ball outs.

Jeremy Guthrie, Kansas City Royals (6-3, 3.66)

                    Starter money: $426

Since being dealt to the Royals in July, 2012, Guthrie has been a completely different pitcher. After many losing seasons as a member of the Orioles, the righty is finally profitable for bettors. Guthrie went 5-3 after joining Kansas City in 2012 and is off to a 6-3 start this year. Guthrie is usually an underdog in most of his starts, adding value for bettors.

Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies (7-2, 2.45)

                    Starter money: $298

Lee’s 6-9 2012 campaign burned many bettors after the lefty built a reputation of being one of the top hurlers in the bigs. Lee has returned to form and the streaking Phillies are 8-4 in his 12 starts to date.

John Lackey, Boston Red Sox (3-5, 2.79)

                    Starter money: -$423

Lackey missed the entire 2012 campaign due to Tommy John surgery after allowing 114 earned runs in 2011 – the highest total in the American League. The righty seems to have righted the ship early this year, regaining the velocity on his fastball while mastering his ability to keep the ball down. His 3-5 record isn’t quite indicative of the way he’s thrown, but he's still fade material until Boston can win consistently when he starts.

All stats prior to action Friday.

Wet, muddy track expected for Belmont Stakes

With a tropical storm moving up the east coast Friday and into Saturday, conditions for the running of the Belmont Stakes could be wet and muddy. Two to four inches of rain is expected overnight.

The heavy rain should be prominent in Elmont, New York Saturday morning but should subside by the afternoon. There is still a possibility of scattered showers peppered throughout the day, however.

Winds will blow from the northwest between 10 and 20 mph.

Temperatures in the afternoon should be in the low to mid 70s.

Freedom Child (+700) won the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park on May 11 in very similar conditions to what we could see Saturday.
