Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

    13) Denver Nuggets fired George Karl, who had one year left on his contract but wanted an extension, which Nuggets weren’t prepared to give him. Getting out of the first round of the playoffs once in nine years doesn’t give you much leverage, but if the Clippers have an ounce of sense, they’re all over Karl and will make him an offer.

Brian Shaw may be a excellent head coach someday, but if you’re choosing between him and Karl right now, who you taking?

    12) Rumors have Sacramento Kings seeing if Larry Bird wants to run their team; for $5M a year and an ownership stake, he probably would be, though I’m guessing he would rather have hired his own coach. Kings already hired Mike Malone as their new coach.

    11) Speaking of Karl, way back in 1989, Duquesne hired a guy named John Carroll as their head coach, passing over both Karl and Bob Huggins for the job. Whoops. You wonder why some teams never win. Karl is from Penn Hills, Pittsburgh’s second-biggest suburb.

    10) Oregon-Georgetown will play hoops on a yet-to be-named Army base November 8 to kick off the college hoop season.

    9) Guy named Jon Gordon writes books/gives seminars on team building for companies; he talks about companies having a no-complaint rule, where people aren’t allowed to bitch unless they come up with a solution to what they’re bitching about. Interesting concept.

    8) A football jersey worn by Kathy Ireland in movie Necessary Roughness sold at auction this week for $262; Ireland played a kicker for the Texas State Armadillos, yes the Armadillos-- what a movie!!!!.

Scott Bakula was the team’s QB, Fred Thompson the school’s President.

    7) North Carolina governor Pat McCrory says kids in public schools “…take too many tests.” Where was this guy when I was in school?

    6) Football handicapping contest at the LVH Superbook will play off the top 30 spots this year; registration begins July 1. You pick five NFL games a week, think the tab is $1,500.

    5) Former Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar was trying to land a spot in the CFL, but tore his Achilles tendon, so he’ll be coaching QBs at Orange Grove HS in Texas (his alma mater) this season, as he rehabs his leg.

Bomar played for the Sooners, got booted for having an illegal summer job, then played at Sam Houston State and was with the Giants for a while. Its hard to make it in the NFL.

    4) White Sox-Mariners played that bizarre 16-inning game Wednesday; Seattle played same eight position players the whole game. That’s DH-baseball; no need to ever make a double switch or employ much strategy, and with Justin Smoak on the DL, Seattle hasn’t been platooning as much either.

One piece of strategy Seattle used was to walk Adam Dunn intentionally three times; Dunn is batting .158 this season.

    3) There have been 39 complete games pitched in major leagues this year; Cardinals have five of them. 14 teams don’t have any CGs, including the Pirates, even though they’ve tossed nine shutouts.

    2) Random statistics:
Pittsburgh pitchers have plunked 32 batters, most in MLB; Seattle pitchers have hit the fewest (9) hitters.

Miami has issued the most intentional walks (28), Red Sox the least (3).

    1) You watch an NHL playoff game on TV, and you’re hearing the best play-by-play man in sports, Mike Emrick; no one captures the excitement of an event better than Emrick. It must be fun to be that good at your job.

Belmont Stakes betting: Are the long shots worth a look?

Think long shots are a losers bet when it comes to the Triple Crown events? Tell that to Preakness bettors who cashed in on Oxbow at 20-1 the week heading into the race.

So, with that big payday in mind, here are three live long shots for the Belmont Stakes.

      Will Take Charge (20-1)

Heading into the Preakness it was the other D. Wayne Lukas horse, and not Oxbow, that was a wiseguy pick.

He had been moving forward aggressively down the stretch in the Kentucky Derby, and could have been a big factor at the wire before running into a rapidly retreating Verrazano and being forced to check his progress.

In the Preakness, though, he just didn’t have a very good day. He never fired and never threatened. Jon Court was aboard for the Derby, and is back again here after giving way to Mike Smith in the Preakness. Smith is the better jockey overall, but Court seems to fit this horse better so that is a positive.

More of a positive is the confirmation of this horse. He is absolutely massive, and very long-legged. It can be tough for a horse like that to navigate turns and can take a while for him to get all the parts moving in the right direction. The length of this race and the wide, sweeping turns seem perfectly suited to him, though his stamina breeding is more adequate than excellent.

If we have learned anything in this Triple Crown season it’s that we can’t rule D. Wayne Lukas out just yet, even though he is 77.

      Incognito (20-1)

Kiaran McLaughlin is a top-rate trainer who doesn’t typically like to waste his time. While it doesn’t immediately seem clear why he would choose to aim at the Belmont, his involvement means the horse deserves a closer look than it normally would warrant. He was a non-factor in the Peter Pan Stakes that Freedom Child dominated, and that was his only stakes appearance.

Aside from the McLaughlin connection, the biggest thing he has going for him is his breeding. Sire A.P. Indy won the Belmont in 1992 and is the sire of 2007 winner Rags To Riches among many other great horses.

When it comes to dirt stamina, there is no better in North America right now. And since he has been retired from stud duty since 2011, it is quite rare to see him on the top line of a youngster. Incognito should be able to run forever. Whether he can run fast enough is a bigger question. But the price could be right.

      Midnight Taboo (30-1)

I don’t like a lot more things about this horse but that is typically the case for long shots. If it wasn’t the case, then the odds would be better. First, the negatives.

He has only run three times and is making his stakes debut. Owner Mike Repole, the founder of Vitaminwater, is desperate to win this race and lets his ego lead his brain down the path of most decisions.

Trainer Todd Pletcher isn’t exactly flawless when it comes to performing well in Triple Crown races. With five Pletcher horses in the race and three owned by Repole, it is far from certain that Midnight Taboo will compete at full strength — he could be used tactically to set up the other runners.

Given all that, as a son of Langfuhr and with Thunder Gulch as damsire, he has oodles of stamina. In a field this big and largely undistinguished, just being able to keep moving forward down the stretch could be the deciding factor.

Penguins at Bruins: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins (-120, 5.5)

        Bruins lead best-of-seven series 3-0.

The Boston Bruins find themselves one win away from a sweep of the top-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins and a berth in the Stanley Cup final for the second time in three years. The fourth-seeded Bruins will look to make quick work of the Penguins on Friday by winning Game 4 of their Eastern Conference final series at TD Garden. Patrice Bergeron redirected Brad Marchand's centering feed past Tomas Vokoun at 15:19 of double overtime and Tuukka Rask turned aside a postseason-high 53 shots as Boston skated to a 2-1 triumph on Wednesday.

The NHL's leading scorer with nine goals, David Krejci has four in this series - which are two more than the sum total collected by Pittsburgh's entire team. The Penguins were the highest scoring club in the regular season, but have received a grand total of zero points from captain Sidney Crosby, reigning Hart Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin and Norris Trophy finalist Kris Letang. In addition, Pittsburgh went 0-for-6 on the power play in Game 3 and is 0-for-12 in the series.

        TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, CBC, RDS

        ABOUT THE PENGUINS:
To a man, Pittsburgh's players and coaches essentially said the same thing. The Penguins need to focus on one game - and one game only - if they are going to pull themselves out of this deficit and hand Boston its second historic collapse in four years. "Looking at the situation, down 0-3, you can look at the odds, the history, it’s not a very encouraging picture,” coach Dan Bylsma said. “We don’t have to win four games against the Boston Bruins. We have to win one game (Friday) night to get this thing back to the 'Burgh. That’s what we have to look at."

        ABOUT THE BRUINS:
Fourth-line center Gregory Campbell suffered a broken right leg after blocking Malkin's shot during a penalty kill in Game 3. Despite being in obvious pain, Campbell remained on the ice for an additional minute before exiting to a standing ovation. "What he did, it kind of epitomizes what type of player he is," fellow Merlot Line member Shawn Thornton said. "He's been like that for probably his whole career, but the whole time he's been here, for sure." Veteran Jay Pandolfo and Kaspars Daugavins are likely candidates to replace Campbell, who will miss the remainder of the postseason.

        TRENDS:

        * Bruins are 5-0 in their last five home games.
        * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
        * Penguins are 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Boston.

        OVERTIME

        1. Pittsburgh won all three regular-season meetings between the teams, but Boston owns an 11-2 edge in goals in this series.

        2. Rask's previous postseason high for saves was 45, which was accomplished in Games 3 and 4 of the first-round series versus Toronto.

        3. Philadelphia overcame a 3-0 deficit to upend Boston in the second round of the 2010 playoffs.
