    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- An epic bad beat if you had the under in White Sox-Mariner game; it was 0-0 thru 13 innings,. but each team scored five times in 13th inning to beat the 7.5-run total.

-- Seattle's Kyle Seager is first player EVER to hit a game-tying grand slam in extra innings. Pretty amazing.

-- It was the first game ever that saw each team score 5+ runs, after game was scoreless through nine innings.
    Elsewhere.........

-- They had 3.97 inches of rain in Atlanta Wednesday, making it wettest day in Atlanta weather history.

-- 11 of Scott Van Slyke's first 14 hits this season were for extra bases; he has five doubles and six home runs.

-- Home teams are 17-6 in Stanley Cup overtime games this spring.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random stuff on a spring day.........

    13) A 22,000-seat high school football stadium in Allen, Texas cost $60M to build. 60 million dollars, for a high school football facility; guess we know where the greedy bastards in the oil industry live- that’s probably part of why gas is $3.71 a gallon around here.

They’re the Allen HS Eagles, by the way.

    12) One of the cool things about college sports is how schools like Rice and Cal State-Fullerton are really good at one sport (in this case, baseball) and doormats in most everything else. Fullerton-UCLA should be a good series this weekend.

    11) Pairings for Jimmy V Classic December 17, both games on ESPN-Pitt-Cincinnati (no longer a Big East rivalry) and Florida-Memphis. Pretty good college basketball twinbill.

    10) Over last four years, Long Beach State has ranked #2-4-2-1 in non-conference strength of schedule. Wonder if they think its helped them, on the court? Their program probably made lot of money doing that, but its not like they made any noise in the post-season. They probably use it a lot in recruiting.

    9) Thoughts and prayers to Cardinals’ QB coach/former Alabama WR Freddie Kitchens, who had emergency heart surgery this week; stuff like that is scary.

    8) Next week’s US Open is going to be really tough; word is that Rory McIlroy hit a ball in the rough during a practice round and couldn’t find it, and they’re still fertilizing the rough this week.

    7) Big Dozen signed an 8-year deal with the Pinstripe Bowl, clinching that a Big Dozen team will get sent to the Bronx for a bowl game for the next eight years. Not sure the kids involved will be all that excited—its damn cold in NYC in late December.

    6) Speaking of the Bronx Bombers, if they get out of paying the rest of ARod’s contract ($80M or so) I’m going to puke- a 100-game suspension nets them about $18M in savings, but getting out of the last three years would be a huge bonanza for them, and allow them to poach more stars from other teams in free agency.

    5) Arizona State is playing USC/Notre Dame on consecutive Saturdays this year; that doesn’t happen too much. Todd Graham might want to have a little talk with whomever is doing his scheduling.

    4) Kentucky is playing Western Kentucky in its football season opener, but in Nashville; why would these Kentucky teams play a game against each other in Tennessee?

    3) Pitcher named Duke von Schamann leads the Class A California League in wins (7-2, 4.32); he is the son of former Oklahoma/Dolphins’ kicker Uwe von Schamann, who kicked in Miami for six years.

The dad once made a last-second FG to beat Ohio State in Columbus; when the Buckeyes called timeout to ice him, von Schamann pretended to be the conductor for the band playing music during the timeout. Yup, those were Barry Switzer’s Sooners.

    2) Heard this at work today: “Its bad luck to kill a spider during the day.” Never heard that before; anyone else have any insight on this?

    1) An 84-year woman in Florida was the winner of the $590M Powerball jackpot; how happy are her freakin’ kids?

If I’m her, first thing I do is hire a person to taste my food, make sure none of the kids are trying to off her to collect the cash.

NCAAF Top 4: ATS breadwinners returning talent

Returning starters are great but only if those guys are good to begin with. Plenty of teams brought back their top talents last season and fell flat on their faces, especially when it came to covering the spread.

But there is value in looking at last year’s top ATS programs and how much has changed over the offseason. Here are four big breadwinners with plenty coming back for 2013:

        Miami Hurricanes (2012: 7-5 SU, 9-3 ATS)

There is a buzz growing in Coral Gables heading into the season. The Hurricanes welcome back 19 starters from 2012, which is good and bad depending on how you look at it. Miami has 10 starting talents back from an offense that put up 31.4 points per game but also returns nine on a stop unit that allowed an average of 486.5 yards – 120th in the land.

        Mississippi Rebels (2012: 6-6 SU, 9-3 ATS)

Ole Miss brings 18 players back from a team that covered in nine of its 12 contests last season. The Rebels are in Year 2 under Hugh Freeze and should continue to improve. Eight guys are back on offense, including QB Bo Wallace who is recovering from shoulder surgery. Mississippi has some tough road tasks but can score enough points to stay within the oddmakers’ expectations.

        Northwestern Wildcats (2012: 9-3 SU, 11-1 ATS)

The Wildcats bring back 15 starters from last season, including eight on an offense that ranked 19th in rushing yards (225.5 per game) behind RB Venric Mark and crazy-legs QB Kain Colter. Northwestern could continue to hold betting value, living in the shadow of the Big Ten Goliaths. The Wildcats were a perfect 8-0 ATS at home last season but welcomed some cupcake conference rivals. The 2013 home slate features Michigan State, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio State.

        Texas-San Antonio Road Runners (2012: 8-4 SU, 7-3 ATS)

The Road Runners have had essentially the same starters for the past two seasons, bringing back 23 guys in 2012 and returning 18 of those top-tier talents in 2013. Texas-San Antonio benefited from some weaker FBS opponents in its first year with the big boys and will cut its teeth against the likes of Oklahoma State, Arizona, Tulsa and Houston in Year 2. The move to the C-USA may not do UTSA any favors.

Belmont Stakes betting: Capping the three favorites

When it comes to betting on the Belmont Stakes we are likely to see three horses draw the lion’s share of the action. How do those three favorites stack up?

          Orb (+300)

His Kentucky Derby win was almost as impressive as a Triple Crown race victory can be. His Preakness performance was equally underwhelming. Both races were heavily affected by the pace.

The blazing early fractions in the Derby set up perfectly for a closer like Orb, while the glacial Preakness pace was his undoing. Where there was unbridled enthusiasm for the horse heading into the Preakness, now there are questions.

How reliant on pace is he? Will the pace develop well enough for him here? Can he handle the distance with his solid but not overwhelming stamina breeding? Has he worked too aggressively leading into this race? How much is Joel Rosario to be blamed for a lousy Preakness ride? Can he do better here?

At his best, I’m still convinced Orb is the best horse in this race. But all the uncertainty means that a good price and some value is far more important here than it was three weeks ago.

          Revolutionary (+450)

This horse was a strong third in the Kentucky Derby, though he was just the third best of the deep closers on that day.

What’s odd, though, is when this horse has been at his best he has been more of a stalker than a closer. Unless the early fractions are absolutely ridiculous - which they shouldn’t be after the Derby debacle - then I would much rather see him chasing the pace than relaxing early on.

He has a different rider than in Kentucky, with Javier Castellano taking over again for Calvin Borel. I like that fit much better for the horse, especially at Belmont where Borel is a major liability. Still, I struggle to have the enthusiasm for the horse that bettors are likely to.

          Oxbow (+500)

In the Preakness, jockey Gary Stevens gave this horse an all-time great ride. It was truly masterful. You can’t let that combination of skill and good fortune hide the fact that this horse also ran a great Derby, though.

He was brutalized by the early pace like the other speed in the race, but was the only one of the early leaders to hang on well, fighting home sixth. I like his breeding and love his connections right now, and as the likely third choice his price will be more attractive than it could be.

The pace could also set up for him to lead early at a reasonable clip, though not nearly as slow as last time out. He’s a real contender, though I would be much happier seeing him north of +700.

            Thursday, June 6

San Antonio had extra week to rest/prepare for this; they've covered six of last seven road games, with 13 of last 16 games on foreign soil going under total. Spurs have four championships; they won't be in awe here. Nine of their 15 players were born outside this country, which is part of why they're a strong road team. Miami won both meetings this year, but since stars never faced each other in either game, that doesn't matter a whole lot. Heat is 4-5 as home favorite in playoffs, covering last two in this building. San Antonio is 3-0 as an underdog in the playoffs.

Spurs at Heat: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Miami Heat (-5, 188.5)

The San Antonio Spurs are well-rested and the Miami Heat are still in basketball-playing rhythm as the NBA Finals begin Thursday in South Beach. San Antonio is 12-2 in the postseason and completed a four-game sweep of the Memphis Grizzlies in the West on May 27. Miami prevailed in a grueling seven-game series in the East finals against Indiana that ended on Monday. The Heat are trying to defend their NBA title and San Antonio is seeking its first since 2007.

The series features four former NBA Finals MVPs in Miami’s LeBron James and Dwyane Wade and San Antonio’s Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. The Spurs have won four titles since 1999 with their most recent one coming against James-led Cleveland six years ago, something Duncan touched on Wednesday. “Knowing the player that he was then and the trajectory he was on, I had no doubt he would be back here,” Duncan said. “I had no doubt he would be tops in this league at some point. And I’m glad and honored to be back here playing against him.” Miami won the two regular-season games but Spurs coach Gregg Popovich held out Duncan, Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green in the first meeting in Miami and the Heat returned serve by holding out James, Wade and Mario Chalmers in their visit to San Antonio.

            TV:
            9 p.m. ET, ESPN

            ABOUT THE SPURS:
The tandem of Parker and Duncan will determine whether San Antonio prevails. Parker had one of the top seasons of any point guard in the NBA and the 37-year-old Duncan has experienced a terrific season for someone of his age. Parker is averaging 23 points and 7.2 rebounds in the postseason while Duncan is averaging 17.8 points and 9.2 rebounds. Another key figure will be second-year forward Kawhi Leonard, who draws the task of guarding James. Ginobili is still capable of hitting the clutch shots despite his diminishing skills and the solid supporting cast includes Green, center Tiago Splitter and 3-point threat Matt Bonner.

            ABOUT THE HEAT:
James has been terrific in the postseason – averaging 26.2 points and 7.3 rebounds – and Wade (14.1 average) has struggled while being hindered by an ailing knee. James carried Miami during the Indiana series and could really use some help from center Chris Bosh. The third member of the “The Big Three” has delivered smallish production in the postseason as Bosh averaged just seven points over the final four games of the Indiana series while shooting 8-for-34. “My confidence never goes anywhere,” said Bosh, despite a postseason in which he is averaging just 12.3 points. “It never wavers. It’s always the same. I feel that I’m always capable of playing well.” Chalmers draws the assignment of slowing Parker and other strong contributors include Udonis Haslem and Chris Andersen in the frontcourt and Ray Allen and Norris Cole in the backcourt.

            TRENDS:

*Spurs are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games.
*Heat are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win.
*Under is 13-3 in Spurs last 16 road games.
*Under is 20-5 in the last 25 meetings.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. James’ lowest scoring output of the postseason is 19 points. His high is 36.

            2. The Spurs are 42-8 this season when Parker scores 20 or more points, including 9-1 in the postseason.

            3. Wade has reached 20 points just twice in the 15 postseason games in which he has played.

Blackhawks at Kings: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Los Angeles Kings (-119, 4.5)

              Blackhawks lead best-of-seven series 2-1.

While the reigning Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings are perfect at home in the playoffs, the Chicago Blackhawks have experienced more than their fair share of troubles on the road. The top-seeded Blackhawks will need to overcome an additional roadblock in Thursday's Game 4 of the Western Conference final with the loss of stud defenseman Duncan Keith. The 2010 Norris Trophy winner was suspended one game by the NHL on Wednesday, one day after he was whistled for high-sticking Los Angeles forward Jeff Carter during the second period of the Kings' 3-1 triumph in Game 3.

Carter suffered a laceration that required 20 stitches to close and a chipped tooth after Keith's blow to the head, which resulted in a double-minor penalty. Fifth-seeded Los Angeles won its eighth straight postseason game at Staples Center and 15th in a row dating back to the regular season to trim its deficit to 2-1 in the series. Presidents' Trophy-winning Chicago has dropped four of six contests away from the United Center.

              ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS:
With Keith sitting out on Thursday, fellow defenseman Sheldon Brookbank likely will be inserted into the lineup for the first time since Chicago's regular-season finale against St. Louis on April 27. "I guess it's kind of like you're on call," Brookbank told the Chicago Sun-Times prior to Keith's suspension being announced. "You've got to stay ready and wait to hear the word if you're needed or not." Keith has one goal and nine assists while logging nearly 25 minutes of ice time per contest in the postseason. Brookbank netted one goal in 26 games this season.

              ABOUT THE KINGS:
After missing Games 2 and 3, Mike Richards showed signs of improvement from his upper-body injury by skating with the scratched players from the last contest. "Obviously, it's great to see him out there," Carter said. "I don't know anything more than that, other than he skated today. If we can get him back at some point in this series, whenever it is, it's a huge lift for our team." Rookie Tyler Toffoli, who has played in Richards' absence, scored a goal in Game 2 and set up another in Game 3.

              TRENDS:

*Blackhawks are 2-5 in their last 7 road games.
*Kings are 40-11 in their last 51 home games.
*Under is 10-1-1 in Blackhawks last 12 road games.
*Home team is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

              OVERTIME:

              1. Keith was considered a "repeat offender" after he was suspended five games for an illegal hit on Vancouver's Daniel Sedin in 2012.

              2. Los Angeles RW Justin Williams, who has scored four goals in as many games, shares the team lead of six with Carter.

              3. Chicago RW Patrick Kane is mired in a seven-game goalless drought.
