    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Six NL games Tuesday; no starting pitcher got a decision. Six games in the AL; all 12 starting pitchers got a decision.

-- Red Sox beat Texas 17-5; only inning they didn't score was when OF David Murphy mopped up in the bottom of the 8th inning.

-- Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione gets a $20,000 bonus because Sooners' softball team won the national championship. Seriously.

-- John Mayberry knocked in five runs in Phillies' 7-3 win over Miami, and he didn't get in the game until the bottom of the 7th inning.

-- Bill Calllahan is going to call the Cowboys' plays instead of head coach Jason Garrett? People in Nebraska are chucking over this.

-- Dodger rookie CF Puig knocked in five runs in his second MLB game as LA beat the Padres 9-7. Quite a start for the young man.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) Great college baseball game on TV late Monday night, FAU-North Carolina, but in 12th inning, Tar Heels bring in lefty reliever to face one better, the day after he threw 90 pitches as a starter!!! If you don’t think college coaches abuse their pitchers, check the next item, written by a current major league pitcher……

    12) Last night’s Tweet of the Night, from Arizona Diamondbacks’ pitcher Daniel Hudson: “Almost just want this UNC regional game to end. These are the types of games where college pitchers get absolutely abused.”

    11) If you’re a parent, and your kid is about to get drafted Thursday and sign maybe a half a million dollar contact, how do you sit by and watch his college coach put his arm in jeopardy like that? There have to have been some interesting confrontations over the years.

    10) Former Arizona Cardinal HC Ken Whisenhunt is the new OC in San Diego; sounds like Philip Rivers will wear gloves this year, to try and reduce his turnovers; a similar tactic worked well for Whisenhunt when he coached two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner with the Redbirds.

    9) This is the 10th week of what has been a very poor season for my fantasy baseball team; it’s a 16-team, 25-man roster keeper league.

Having Carl Crawford on my team has been frustrating; the six weeks he was active, he had a .320 OB%. The three weeks he was inactive, he had a .402 OB%. If I’m frustrated by his sporadic and erratic play, what about the people who are paying him $20.8M this season? How must they feel?

    8) Miami Heat is -$220 to win the NBA Finals; Spurs are +$190.

    7) If I had my choice of three people to go to dinner with and pick their brains, they would be: Bill James-Steve Martin-Bob Uecker.

    6) JaMarcus Russell is getting a workout with the Bears Friday, which should be interesting. He'd be an interesting project as a backup.

    5) Ohio State President Gordon Gee got the gate Tuesday; if you believe he "resigned", you're naive. People don't quit $1.9M a year jobs, when you live in a big mansion and have a huge expense account. His mouth got his overeducated butt fired, bow ties and all.

    4) Nine of 14 baseball games Tuesday were decided by one run or in extra innings. Lot of late inning heroics, aka bad relief pitching.

    3) Los Angeles Kings stayed unbeaten at home in NHL playoffs, beating Chicago 3-1; Blackhawks still lead series 2-1.

    2) Eagles WR DeSean Jackson fired agent Drew Rosenhaus, who then sued Jackson for $400,000; no shortage of drama with those receivers.

    1) RIP David (Deacon) Jones, one of my boyhood heroes, and one of the great defensive ends of all-time. Being a Ram fan in the late 60’s was fun because they had a great defense and a coach (George Allen) who was one of the first coaches to really stress special teams play.

Jones used to slap opposing tackles in the head to get by them, a move that was later outlawed. He was a bigger-than-life personality and a great, great player. RIP, sir.

NBA Finals series betting preview: Heat vs. Spurs

The NBA Playoffs are down to two teams, the defending champion Miami Heat and the veteran-heavy San Antonio Spurs. This is the third straight NBA Finals appearance for the Heat and the Spurs’ fourth trip to the finals in the last 11 seasons.

Here’s a look at how these teams stack up and their odds to win the NBA Championship heading into Game 1 Thursday.

No. 1 Miami Heat vs. No. 2 San Antonio Spurs

      Season series: Miami 2-0, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U
Series prices: Miami -220, San Antonio +190
      Postseason record: Miami 12-4 SU, 9-7 ATS, 7-7-2 O/U, San Antonio 12-2 SU, 10-4 ATS, 7-7 O/U

      Why bet the Spurs:
San Antonio has been off for nine full days since sweeping Memphis in the Western Conference finals. For most teams, that layoff would disrupt momentum but the Spurs have proven mentally strong during extended breaks, going 8-1 SU and 6-3 ATS when playing on three or more days rest this season. The Spurs don’t have a true 7-footer inside like Indiana’s Roy Hibbert but they are tough in the paint, with Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter going up against a smaller Miami frontcourt. San Antonio can quickly adapt to any pace and Gregg Popovich has had ample time to cook up a plan for slowing down LeBron & Co.

      Why bet the Heat:
LeBron. The reigning MVP is approaching Jordan status as the ultimate trump card when it comes to arguing which team will win. San Antonio will throw Kawhi Leonard at James, who scored 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting in his lone game vs. the Spurs this season (missed the other due to injury), but there is no stopping LeBron. Not to mention, there’s still a chip on James’ shoulder from a 2007 finals sweep to San Antonio while with the Cavs. Dwyane Wade scored 21 points in the finale with Indiana, his playoff high. If he’s awakening from his postseason slumber, the Heat could burn San Antonio when it doubles up on James.

NFL Games of the Year: Packers slight dogs at Baltimore

Odds are out for the biggest and best games of the upcoming NFL season. Covers Expert Steve Merril gives you his insight into some of these marquee matchups and predicts where the odds could move before kickoff.

        NFL Week 6:
Green Bay Packers at Baltimore Ravens (-1.5)

Early look at the Packers: Green Bay has won 10 games or more in four consecutive seasons and in five of the last six seasons overall. The Packers' season win total is 10.5 at most sportsbooks, so another double-digit win season is likely. This game is one of two in which the Packers are slated to be underdogs. Green Bay went 1-2 SU and ATS as an underdog last season.

Early look at the Ravens: Baltimore is the defending Super Bowl champion so it will have a target of its back all season. The Ravens broke the bank to sign QB Joe Flacco to a long-term deal, but in doing so they lost a bunch of key contributors. Baltimore will most likely regress from last season.

Where this line will move: Green Bay will be the better team this season and since this game is in Week 6, there’s a good chance the Packers will become the favorite.

Bruins' road wins in Games 1-2 ended six-game losing streak vs Pittsburgh; they've won seven of last eight games since coming back from dead in Game 7 vs Toronto. Penguins are 0-6 on power play in series; would expect big easrly effort from team that is 3-2 away from home in playoffs, with two of three wins in OT. Over is 8-5 in Pitt's playoff games, 7-5-2 in Boston's. Penguins scored 4+ goals in all their playoff wins, 3-4-1-0-1 in losses. Boston is 5-2 at home in playoffs, winning last four. Penguins have actually won last six visits to Beantown, winning 3-2 in only visit here this season on April 20, but scoring one goal in first two games in this series has been big surprise.

Penguins at Bruins: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins (-111, 5.5)

            Bruins lead best-of-seven series 2-0.

After scoring 13 goals in their last two games of the second round, the high-octane Pittsburgh Penguins have mustered a total of one in the first two contests of the Eastern Conference final. The top-seeded Penguins will need to flip the switch Wednesday at TD Garden or risk being pushed to the brink of elimination by the fourth-seeded Boston Bruins. Boston painted quite the picture in the Steel City, outscoring its foe by a 9-1 margin to claim a 2-0 advantage in the series.

"Right now, we're not liking the picture, down 0-2. They're in control," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "I don't think we're frustrated by the fact that we haven't scored as much as they're getting leads, especially in Game 2." Brad Marchand needed all of 28 seconds to give Boston the advantage in Monday's 6-1 triumph. Marchand tallied again to a cap the Bruins' four-goal first period and never looked back.

            TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, CBC, RDS

            ABOUT THE PENGUINS:
Pittsburgh's offense wasn't the only thing missing in Game 2 - as its goaltending followed suit. Tomas Vokoun, who had won six of his previous eight games since replacing Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, yielded three quick goals to earn a seat on the bench. Given an opportunity for the first time since May 7, Fleury fell flat on his face as well - allowing a goal on the first shot he saw. Bylsma didn't divulge the identity of which man will be behind the mask in goal for Game 3.

            ABOUT THE BRUINS:
David Krejci would be well within his rights to pat himself on the back. After all, he is the league's postseason points leader and has three goals in two games in this series. Krejci, however, knows it's too early to start celebrating. "We know we played some good hockey in the regular season, but it wasn't even close to the way we're playing right now," Krejci said. "But we've still got a long way ahead of us, so we've got to keep it going."

            TRENDS:

*Bruins are 7-1 in their last 8 overall.
*Over is 4-1 in Penguins last 5 road games.
*Under is 5-2 in Bruins last 7 vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
*Penguins are 6-0 in the last 6 meetings in Boston.

            OVERTIME:

            1. Captain Sidney Crosby and reigning Hart Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin have yet to record a point and are both a minus-3 in this series for the Penguins.

            2. Boston G Tuukka Rask has stopped 55 of 56 shots versus Pittsburgh.

            3. The Penguins have overcome 0-2 deficits to win a series on five occasions since 1991.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How much will possible PED suspensions impact MLB odds?
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Late Tuesday, Twitter exploded with the rumors of ESPN's Outside the Lines learning of roughly 20 MLB players potentially facing suspension. These players, which include some big names, were involved with a Miami-area biogenesis clinic.

Tony Bosch, who is the founder of the clinic Biogenesis of American, apparently had reached an agreement to cooperate with the investigation of Major League Baseball.

Some of the players who could be named, such as Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, could face a 100-game suspension due to their second doping offense.

With punishment possibly coming this week, we talked to Steve Mikkelson, sportsbook manager at the Atlantis in Reno, to see how much these suspensions will impact the daily MLB moneylines:

                    Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers

Braun is lacking in the home run department this year with just nine, but leads the Brew Crew with 35 RBIs.

"This is a guy who is a potential MVP candidate," says Mikkelson. "The Brewers really don't have any pitching and to pull that bat out of the lineup would be devastating. If they lose Braun, they drop below teams like the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets. Without question, you're probably knocking 10 cents off the line."

                    Robinson Cano, New York Yankees

Cano has been compiling more great numbers and is the heart of the Yankees lineup. Many experts and pundits wrote the Yankees off before the season had started but, heading into action Tuesday, the Yankees were a surprising 2.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox atop the American League East.

"This would be another devastating blow. Not as devastating as Braun, but pretty darn close," Mikkelson says, "The Yankees have done a wonderful job in staying in it this year. Cano is everything to this lineup and he is leading in practically every offensive category and at second base. They can't stay in contention if Cano is lost."

                    Nelson Cruz, Texas Rangers

The Rangers slugger is having another great season leading the ball club with 13 homers and 39 RBIs.

"This is a team that lost Mike Napoli, Josh Hamilton and Michael Young. They're not exactly the scoring team that we're used to and Cruz fits right in the middle of that lineup. He is probably worth three or four cents to the moneyline. If they are going to win without him, which they still can, they are going to need to get guys like Alexi Ogando back and pitching well again."

                    Melky Cabrera, Toronto Blue Jays

Cabrera was suspended last year as a member of the San Francisco Giants. He leads the Jays with a .281 batting average in his first season with the club.

"I don't view Cabrera as that big a piece for Toronto. The loss of a guy like Jose Reyes was certainly bigger and they have a guy like Rajai Davis who can fill in," says Mikkelson.

                    Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees

Rodriguez has yet to play this season and is another player who could see a second suspension.

"A potential suspension to A-Rod will have no effect on the Yankees. All it says is 'now we know for sure that he's not coming back'."

                    Jhonny Peralta, Detroit Tigers

Peralta is having a great season for Detroit, batting .332 and has 97 total bases on the season.

"He's having a really good year and his loss would hurt them. Losing Peralta certainly makes them vulnerable, but I believe they still win the division. He's hitting well, but he's poor defensively. His value is a couple of cents to the moneyline at best."
