  • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Nets dropped from 40-1 to 10-1 to win NBA next season after trading for Garnett/Pierce Thursday night.

-- Atlanta Braves retired Larry Wayne Jones’ #10 Friday night. Chipper could’ve gone to the AL and hung on as a DH for few more years, but opted for retirement.

-- Shelby Miller threw 51 pitches in the second inning alone Friday, most pitches thrown by any pitcher in any inning this season.

-- My friend John submits two more sets of look-alikes: Bronx C Chris Stewart and the Joker on Batman; Rangers 1B Lance Berkman and NASCAR’s Tony Stewart.

-- Stan Musial had 3,630 hits in his career; 1,815 at home, 1,815 on road.

-- Congrats to Juniata College on signing Trevor Clune to play basketball next year; young Clune played for Meadville HS-- if he has dad's ability and his mom's smarts, he has a bright future.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

    13) 26 of the 60 players drafted in last year’s NBA Draft played in the D-League, and this year’s draft was even weaker. Am curious to see some summer league games in Las Vegas in a couple weeks.

    12) Chip Kelly went 46-7 in four years coaching Oregon; I’m thinking he loses more games than that in his first year with the Eagles.

    11) 166 poker players ponied up $111,111 each to get in what is really the most elite tournament of the World Series of Poker, because the steep buy-in pretty much eliminates amateur players. That’s a prize pool of over $18M, so it’ll be interesting to follow who wins that. Think Antonio Esfandiari won last year’s event.

    10) Why wasn’t Jeff Van Gundy on ESPN’s draft coverage? Unless he didn’t want to be, it makes no sense for a network not to have your top analyst with a role in the broadcast.

    9) New Memphis Grizzlies’ coach Dave Joerger paid his dues, coaching several years in pro hoops’ minor leagues, winning the ’07 D-League title with the world-famous Dakota Wizards. Phil Jackson/George Karl coached in the CBA in the 80’s; that’s how you learn your craft.

Joerger is a no-name, but am betting he’ll wind up being a damn good coach. Plus from the team’s standpoint, obscure guys get paid less than big names, at least until they win.

    8) Former Nets’ head coach Lawrence Frank is back with the Nets, as Jason Kidd’s top lieutenant. You’d think a former head coach would have too big an ego to make a move like that, but Frank was a student manager as a college student at Indiana so despite being a former head coach, his ego is probably somewhat smaller than most.

    7) Rodney Hood is expected to make a splash at Duke this winter after transferring from Mississippi State, but he hurt his Achilles this week while playing for USA Basketball, and his people are holding their break that it isn’t a torn Achilles.

    6) D1scourse.com points out that over the last five years, 19 players from the teams in the new AAC were drafted by NBA teams; only 15 players from current Big East schools were selected.

    5) Celtics-Clippers aren’t allowed to make any more trades with each other until the end of next season.

    4) Sharpshooter Jordan Price has transferred from Auburn to LaSalle, where he’ll have three years to play starting in 2014-15. Price made 11 treys in a row at one point last season, before injuring his foot.

    3) Friday was a day for undrafted players to scramble for a summer league team to play on. One kid I think will wind up being a good pro is UNLV’s Anthony Marshall, who will play for Miami’s summer league team in Las Vegas next month.

    2) 33 of the 125 Division I-A college football coaches were quarterbacks in their playing days; only three were running backs.

    1) In 1975-76, George Seifert went 3-15 as the head football coach at Cornell, and the Ivy League school fired him.

13 years later, Seifert was hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy as head coach of the Super Bowl champion 49ers. Life is funny, it goes in cycles. Have to hang in there through the rough patches.

MLB Top 4: Bettors beware clubs about to self-destruct
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The MLB season is quickly approaching the halfway mark and with it, the July 31 trade deadline.

Trade rumors have hogged the headlines over the past week, and more than a few teams are making regular appearances in those reports.

Baseball bettors should beware of clubs about to push the plunger and blow up their roster – along with 2013’s aspirations. Players on the trading block are focused on where their next paycheck is coming from, not the next pitch, and teams can take a nose dive as the deadline draws closer.

Here are four MLB clubs who could be swinging the wrecking ball over the next month:

            Philadelphia Phillies (38-42, -9.05 units)

The Phillies have been on dynamite watch around this time in each of the past three seasons. An aging roster and massive payroll haven’t produced results and Philadelphia sports fans don’t have much patience left for the franchise. Honestly, this team should have been blown up back in 2011.

Cliff Lee continues to be the big name floating around, even though the Phillies brass denies trade talks. Also cracking the rumor mills are Jonathan Papelbon, Chase Utley, Chris Young, Carlos Ruiz, and even Roy Halladay – the latter four are all free agents this winter.

Chicago White Sox (32-43, -11.92 units)

Everybody in the American League Central has a shot at the division crown this season, with Minnesota only six games back in fourth place. Everyone but the White Sox that is, according to the trade buzz coming out of the Southside.

With Chicago nine games back of the lead, it appears that the ChiSox are willing to clean house with the exceptions of starter Chris Sale and veteran slugger Paul Konerko. According to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, a fire sale could include names like Alex Rios, John Danks and Alexei Ramirez.

            Chicago Cubs (33-44, -7.14 units)

The Cubbies are still in rebuilding mode in Year 2 under wiz kid Theo Epstein and a deconstruction of 2013’s foundation appears to be on the way, starting with ace Matt Garza. The right-hander has improved his stock with three straight solid outings and is on the radar of just about every contending club in the bigs.

Chicago is also dangling carrots like Scott Feldman, Kevin Gregg, Carlos Marmol, David DeJesus, Nate Schierholtz, and Alfonso Soriano this month. The Cubs’ July schedule has them on the West Coast for a good chunk of the month.

            Milwaukee Brewers (32-45, -15.46 units)

You’d have to be drunk off your ass to be betting on the Brew Crew right now. Milwaukee has been blitzed by the injury bug all season, fielding a different lineup almost every night. Ryan Braun is out with a bum thumb and who knows what suspensions lay ahead for him in the MLB’s ongoing PED investigations.

The Brewers pitching staff could stand for a good implosion, currently touting a collective ERA of 5.00 – second worst in the majors. Ace Yovani Gallardo is their biggest card in the deck when it comes to making moves. From the sounds of it, Milwaukee is on the fence about whether or not to pack it in. But with 11 of their next 17 away from home, where the Brewers are 13-22, the decision could be clearer by mid July.

                        Game: 3
                        Venue: Marlins Park

The San Diego Padres have won all three of Andrew Cashner's starts against NL East opponents, including one in which he excelled against the Miami Marlins.

Cashner will look to duplicate that effort from last month when he takes the mound Sunday as the Padres and Marlins continue this four-game set in Miami.

Cashner (5-3, 3.34 ERA) is 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in three starts against the East - all at home. The first one was a 5-0 victory over the Marlins on May 6 as he lasted 7 1-3 innings in the longest outing of his career at that time.

The right-hander has since surpassed that distance twice, including an eight-inning stint in which he surrendered one run last Sunday and did not receive a decision in a 3-1 loss to the Dodgers. Cashner threw 91 pitches and recorded 18 groundouts.

"I was able to keep my pitch count down and I threw some good pitches when I was behind in the count," he said.

Cashner also has been solid at the plate with six hits in 22 at_bats.

He'll be opposed by another Texas-born right-hander in Nathan Eovaldi (1-0, 3.00), who will face the Padres (40-41) for the second time. Eovaldi defeated them July 28 in his Miami debut by yielding one run over 5 1-3 innings in a 4-2 victory.

Eovaldi has started twice since beginning 2013 on the 60-day disabled list due to shoulder inflammation. He has lasted six innings and given up two runs both times, earning his first win since August in last Sunday's 7-2 victory at San Francisco.

His fastball topped out at 98 mph as he threw 56 of 86 pitches for strikes.

"He threw a lot of strikes," manager Mike Redmond told the Marlins' official website. "For his second start, he gave us exactly what we needed."

San Diego had yielded a total of three runs in going 4-0 against Miami before Saturday's 7-1 defeat.

The Marlins (28-51) matched their season run total against the Padres in the first inning as Marcell Ozuna had an RBI single, Ed Lucas scored on an error and Placido Polanco had a sacrifice fly. They doubled their lead with three runs in the fourth.

Jacob Turner pitched a seven-hitter for his first complete game and the first by a Miami pitcher this year.

The Marlins are 14-10 in June. Giancarlo Stanton homered Saturday and has hit safely in all 10 home games since being activated off the disabled list June 10, batting .385 with three homers and 10 RBIs.

Derek Dietrich, who made his major league debut in San Diego on May 8, is 4 for 8 in this series for Miami. For the Padres, Logan Forsythe is 4 for 8 and Will Venable 4 for 9.

San Diego has lost seven of 12 while playing without its top three hitters in Everth Cabrera, Jedd Gyorko and Yonder Alonso.

These teams have played some quick games with Saturday's meeting the third to take less than 2 hours and 30 minutes.

                          Date: June 30, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

New York Mets manager Terry Collins revealed this week Zack Wheeler had been tipping his breaking pitches.

The rookie right-hander doesn't think that'll be an issue moving forward.

Wheeler will make his Citi Field debut Sunday in the series finale against the Washington Nationals.

While it's hard to make many conclusions about Wheeler (1-0, 3.18 ERA) after two major league starts, Collins - and others - noticed the 23-year-old has been telegraphing his off-speed stuff. Collins said the staff briefly addressed it with Wheeler during a 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday when he gave up four runs in 5 1-3 innings.

"Guys look for it all the time. It starts with the glove,' said Collins, who said he received about 10 text messages and emails from those who pinpointed Wheeler's flaw. "Moving the glove there's different things to look for and then all of sudden you start to look when he speeds up, when he slows down, what the pitches are. You start to get a read on it.'

Wheeler, who threw six shutout innings in his debut - a 6-1 victory over Atlanta on June 18 - also has been working with pitching coach Dan Warthen to correct his arm slot.

"I don't think it's anything too difficult," the 2009 first-round pick told the Mets' official website. "Just a little small tweak here and there, and we'll be good to go."

Wheeler's curveball improved his last time out, but getting ahead of hitters - he's already thrown 211 pitches and walked eight - are a concern.

So is the Mets' 15-24 record in Queens, but New York (33-44) has a chance to win its second series over the Nationals (40-40) in town this season after evening this three-game set with Saturday's 5-1 victory.

Winners of nine of 14 overall, the Mets will get their second look at Gio Gonzalez (4-3, 3.31) this season.

The left-hander yielded five runs, walked four and lasted just four innings in a 7-6 victory at Citi Field on April 20 - the Nationals' only victory in that three-game set.

Since then, Gonzalez has surrendered two runs or fewer in 10 of 12 starts. He has a 2.16 ERA in five appearances this month, but he has just one win to show for that. That came Tuesday when he allowed two runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 7-5 win over Arizona, his first victory in nine starts.

                          The two-time All-Star had a 2.18 run-support average since his last victory May 5.

"Seeing these guys come alive, swing the bat, it's always a nice thing to see, especially when you start getting in a rhythm like that,' Gonzalez said.

Mets newcomer Eric Young Jr. is in a nice rhythm, batting .400 with seven RBIs during a team-best eight-game hitting streak.

New York's Marlon Byrd and David Wright, who both went 1 for 2 off Gonzalez on April 20, lead the team with six and five homers, respectively, this month.

Washington shortstop Ian Desmond has eight homers this month with 25 RBIs - the most by a National in June. The franchise record for RBIs in June was 30 set by Moises Alou in 1994 with Montreal.

Desmond has team highs of three homers and five RBIs as Washington has dropped four of seven to New York this season.

                            Game: 4
                            Venue: Fenway Park
                            Date: June 30, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

It's been four seasons since Mark Buehrle defeated the Boston Red Sox.

Buehrle is also winless in his last five outings at Fenway Park as he tries to help the Toronto Blue Jays earn a split of this four-game set Sunday.

The left-hander began his career 4-0 against the Red Sox (49-34) but is 0-4 with a 4.84 ERA against them in seven outings since the start of 2010, including 0-1 with a 3.95 ERA in two this year.

He hasn't won in Boston since 2004, going 0-3 with a 7.04 ERA in his last five starts there although he only yielded one run over seven-plus innings May 11 in a 3-2 victory. His 5.02 ERA at Fenway is his third-worst in any AL ballpark.

David Ortiz is hitting .358 in 67 at_bats against Buehrle (4-5, 4.73 ERA) while Dustin Pedroia is 9 for 27. Both are 2 for 6 against him in 2013.

One hitter Buehrle has never faced is Jose Iglesias, who is 6 for 16 against Toronto (40-40) and hitting .402 in June for the AL's second-best mark.

Buehrle fell to 1-4 with a 5.79 ERA in eight road starts after allowing four runs and walking a season-high four over five innings Tuesday in a 5-1 defeat to Tampa Bay.

The Blue Jays could use a long outing from the veteran since their bullpen has been forced to work 14 innings in the first three games of this series.

Toronto ended Boston's win streak at four with a 6-2 victory Saturday behind Jose Bautista's 21st career multihomer game. Bautista hit the 200th of his career in the sixth and added a tiebreaking two-run shot in the eighth.

"Any time you hit two home runs in close ballgames I have to give it to that,' manager John Gibbons said. "Homers win.'

Bautista had been slumping with a .136 average since his last multihit effort June 15 at Texas, but Red Sox manager John Farrell knows that the slugger is always capable of breaking out after managing him the two previous years.

"Very good player," Farrell said. "Obviously capable of hitting balls out of the ballpark every time he steps in the box.'

The Red Sox have recorded at least nine hits over eight straight games while batting .355, but went 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position Saturday.

"We're looking for anyone to score," Farrell said. "We left some opportunities out there."

Boston was much more efficient in going 12 for 25 with runners in scoring position in taking the first two games of this series.

Ryan Dempster (5-8, 4.15) will start for the Red Sox in search of a second straight win after yielding two runs in six innings in Tuesday's 11-4 rout of Colorado. He received two total runs of support in losing his previous two outings.

"The wins come as a team more than an individual," Dempster said. "That's all I care about is that when I start, we win the game."

The right-hander has allowed 17 homers to rank among baseball's highest totals and has given up four in two starts versus Toronto this year - all against different hitters. He's 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA in those outings.

                            • Preview: Diamondbacks (42-38) at Braves (47-34)
                              Game: 3
                              Venue: Turner Field
                              Date: June 30, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

The Atlanta Braves' bats are springing to life and might further do so against a pitcher having trouble figuring out what's wrong.

Atlanta tries to extend Trevor Cahill's woes and complete a three-game sweep of a fellow division leader in Sunday's matchup with the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.

Through June 5, the Braves topped the NL with 81 homers and were among the league leaders with 4.5 runs per game. A big offensive funk followed, failing to go deep in 10 of 17 games while averaging 2.6 runs. They went 6-11 and reached double digits in hits just three times.

That's happened in four of the past five games as Atlanta has gone 4-1, batting .307 with six homers and 14 doubles. The Braves (47-34) didn't have a double-figure scoring effort in June until rallying for seven runs in the eighth inning Saturday to beat Arizona 11-5.

"It was a good day offensively, it really was, and hopefully that can carry on for quite a while," manager Fredi Gonzalez told the team's official website.

Keying Atlanta's NL-best 23rd comeback win was Jason Heyward, who had the tying RBI double and is among many Braves shaking off a slump. He's 7 for 17 with five extra-base hits over the past four games, scoring four runs and driving in four. Heyward had been 3 for 22 in his previous six games.

Dan Uggla drove in two runs Saturday and has hit .350 in five games after a 4-for-24 funk. Freddie Freeman was 1 for 3 for the fourth straight game following a 2-for-24 stretch, hitting a two-run homer after going 10 games without an RBI.

Even B.J. Upton, batting .178, had two RBIs after going seven games without one.

"It just seems we are playing better and better baseball every day all around," Upton said. "That's kind of scary that we're just going to get better."

Cahill (3-9, 4.29 ERA) clearly needs to get better for an Arizona rotation which has gone 21 consecutive starts without winning.

The right-hander is 0-5 with a 7.34 ERA in his last seven outings as opposing batters have hit .329. He's failed to get through six innings in five starts this month.

"It's tough, because I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing and work on some things, but also try not to change too much," Cahill said.

He was tagged for six runs and eight hits in five innings of a 7-5 loss at Washington on Tuesday.

"I don't know if he's trying to change his delivery or what. He changes from pitch to pitch," catcher Miguel Montero said. "... He's a guy that doesn't need to do too much."

The only two times Cahill faced the Braves came last season and he lost both, allowing 13 runs in 10 2-3 innings.

Atlanta counters with Paul Maholm (8-6, 3.75), who is 4-2 with a 1.80 ERA in six home starts this year. The left-hander won at Milwaukee last Sunday despite a subpar outing, giving up four runs and eight hits in five innings of a 7-4 victory.

Maholm was 0-3 against the Diamondbacks before winning the last matchup, throwing seven innings of one-run ball in an 8-1 victory July 13 while with the Cubs.

While Atlanta's 6 1/2-game lead atop the East is the largest in baseball, Arizona (42-38) has lost five of six to see its West lead cut to two.

"We'll have to figure things out, we'll have to switch things around," manager Kirk Gibson said.

The Diamondbacks have dropped 12 of 15 in Atlanta, where Paul Goldschmidt is batting .120 in eight career games.

                              • Preview: Brewers (32-47) at Pirates (50-30)
                                Game: 3
                                Venue: PNC Park
                                Date: June 30, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

The Pittsburgh Pirates are playing so well that they have to feel they can earn a rare win over Kyle Lohse.

Lohse is 9-2 in his career against the Pirates, who will try for their ninth straight victory Sunday and a three-game home sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pittsburgh (50-30) owns baseball's best record thanks to its longest win streak since a 10-game run June 26-July 5, 2004. The club has won 50 games before the start of July for the first time - the closest it had come to accomplishing that feat was the 1971 team that won its 50th game July 1 and captured the World Series.

"We're playing good baseball," manager Clint Hurdle said. "It's nice to get to 50 wins but we're just trying to meet the demands of the game, honestly self-evaluate and get better every day. There is still a long way to go."

Pedro Alvarez is enjoying a career-high 12-game hitting streak in which he is batting .396 with six homers and 15 RBIs. He hit his 20th homer in Saturday's 2-1 victory.

Alvarez has one hit in his last 14 at_bats against Lohse (3-6, 3.69 ERA), who is 4-0 with a 3.03 ERA in his past six outings against the Pirates. He's 5-1 with a 3.58 ERA in 10 career games at PNC Park.

Milwaukee (32-47) has won four of the right-hander's last five starts as Lohse has gone 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA. He beat the Cubs on Tuesday, yielding three runs over seven innings in a 9-3 victory.

Lohse will want to be careful against Neil Walker, 8 for 21 against him, and Andrew McCutchen (9 for 30).

While the Pirates have struggled to beat Lohse, Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton (1-1, 2.81) is winless against Milwaukee.

Morton is 0-4 with a 6.67 ERA in six starts versus the Brewers, although he hasn't faced them since 2011.

The right-hander has failed to get through six innings in his first three 2013 starts, lasting 5 2-3 and giving up six runs last Sunday in a 10-9, 10-inning victory over the Angels.

The Pirates have enjoyed five straight home sellouts - the longest such streak since PNC Park opened in 2001.

"The energy of the crowds has been unbelievable and we've been soaking it all up," said closer Jason Grilli, who improved to 15-for-15 in save chances at home Saturday. "You absorb it and try to use it to your advantage. We're playing for ourselves but we're also playing for about 40,000 people in the stands and an entire city."

The Pirates also lead the majors with a 20-11 record in day games while the Brewers are 9-20 for the NL's worst mark.

Milwaukee has totaled 10 runs while dropping four straight and has gone 3 for 16 with runners in scoring position in this series.

"We've got to get big hits," manager Ron Roenicke said.

Carlos Gomez is 4 for 9 in this series and batting .378 with four homers and eight RBIs in the season series.

Pittsburgh has taken eight of 12 meetings and can complete its first three-game sweep of Milwaukee since Aug. 28-30, 2009.
