  • Preview: Indians (40-38) at White Sox (32-43)
    Game: 1
    Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
    Date: June 28, 2013 8:40 PM EDT

Unless things don't turn around soon, the underachieving Chicago White Sox could be in for a shakeup.

Looking to bounce back from another frustrating defeat, the White Sox hope for something positive during Friday's doubleheader against the visiting Cleveland Indians.

Chicago (32-43) felt it was capable of challenging for the AL Central title this year, but it's last in the division, ranks near bottom of the majors with 277 runs and close to the top with 55 errors.

"Each night it's something different. It's definitely frustrating," pitcher John Danks told the White Sox's official website.

"We're way too talented to be where we are right now."

An Internet report surfaced Thursday stating the White Sox will make everybody other than ace Chris Sale and veteran Paul Konerko available for potential trades.

Chicago managed four hits and shortstop Alexei Ramirez committed his AL-leading 13th error to contribute to the New York Mets scoring all their runs in the fifth inning of Wednesday's 3-0 loss. The White Sox were shut out for the seventh time, and fourth during the stretch where they've dropped 19 of 27.

"Listless offense,' manager Robin Ventura said. "I don't know the reason for it, but it can't happen.

"It's just unacceptable. You've got to put something on the board.'

Outfielder Alex Rios could be a serious trade target, but he's batted .182 (8 for 44) with no homers in 12 games after hitting .356 in his previous 10. He's 3 for 19 against the Indians this season.

Chicago has dropped three of five this year to Cleveland (40-38), which is coming off a four-game split at Baltimore.

Lonnie Chisenhall homered for one of his three hits as the Indians lost a one-run lead when the Orioles scored five times in the sixth inning during Thursday's 7-3 loss.

"It happened so fast," said Chisenhall, who is batting .444 (8 for 18) in five games after he went 0 for 7 in his first two since being recalled from the minors last week.

Teammate and suburban Chicago native Jason Kipnis is batting .359 with 21 RBIs while reaching base safely in 29 straight games.

In the opener, the Indians hand the ball to Trevor Bauer (1-2, 2.76 ERA), who will be recalled to make his fourth spot start of the season. The third overall pick by Arizona in 2011, Bauer allowed three runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 7-0 loss to the New York Yankees in his most recent major league start May 13.

The right-hander, 3-2 with a 4.13 ERA in 12 starts at Triple-A, will be making his first appearance against the White Sox.

He'll be opposed by Hector Santiago (3-5, 3.03), who allowed a home run and two other hits over eight innings of a 9-1 win at Kansas City on Friday.

The left-hander has a 2.29 ERA while winning two of his last three starts, and is 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA in two against the Indians.

Teammate Jose Quintana (3-2, 3.83) takes the mound in the nightcap to make up the April 23 postponement between the clubs.

The left-hander has not factored in the decision of five straight starts, but is 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in three versus Cleveland. He's allowed two runs and five hits while going 1-0 in two against the Indians in 2013.

Quintana gave up two runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 3-2 win at Kansas City on Saturday.

Cleveland will call up Carlos Carrasco (0-3, 7.78) as its 26th man to take the mound in the second game. The right-hander allowed three runs and walked four in 4 2-3 innings of a 5-3 loss to Minnesota on Sunday.

He's 0-3 with a 6.15 ERA in four starts against the White Sox.

    • Preview: Royals (36-40) at Twins (35-40)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Target Field
      Date: June 28, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

The Kansas City Royals are winning games started by James Shields, but the right-hander has nothing to show for it.

While the visiting Royals look for a sixth straight victory with him on the mound, Shields again tries for his first win in almost two months Friday night against a Minnesota Twins team searching for a season-high fifth consecutive home triumph.

In the five consecutive wins Kansas City (36-40) has recorded in games started by Shields (2-6, 2.92 ERA), it's totaled seven runs with him physically on the hill in those contests. Shields is 0-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 10 starts since beating Tampa Bay on April 30.

He posted a 3.72 ERA while dropping his final four starts of May, but has a 2.81 ERA in his five June outings.

Shields' worst outing this month came Sunday when he allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings of a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox. That ended his streak of 29 straight starts of at least six innings.

"I just didn't have my command (Sunday), that's all. It's plain and simple," he told the Royals' official website. "I got behind almost every hitter and as a result you're not going to throw deep in the game.

"I guess I've got to start another 29-game streak."

Shields is 4-2 with a 4.08 ERA in 11 starts against the Twins, but has yet to face them as a Royal.

He'll try to help the Royals bounce back from Thursday's 3-1 loss at Minnesota. Salvador Perez homered for one of his two hits as Kansas City lost for the sixth time in eight games since winning 11 of 13.

The Twins (35-40) are 2-5 against the Royals this season, but have won 11 of 15 overall at home. Samuel Deduno pitched seven strong innings to help Minnesota regroup after a 1-4 trip to Cleveland and Miami.

"He did a really nice job," teammate Justin Morneau said. "That was what we needed.'

Morneau doubled twice and drove in a run for Minnesota in the opener. The veteran is batting .241 in his last 16 games but .353 with three doubles and five RBIs in the last four at Target Field.

Morneau, and teammates Joe Mauer and Josh Willingham are batting a combined .355 with nine doubles versus Shields.

Scheduled Minnesota starter P.J. Walters (2-3, 4.88) looks to bounce back after giving up six runs and walking five while throwing 46 pitches to nine batters over two-thirds innings of Saturday's 8-7 loss to Cleveland.

"It was just a bad night," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He couldn't find anything. Hopefully, we won't see that again from him.'

The right-hander dropped to 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA against the Royals after allowing three unearned runs in six innings of a 4-1 loss at Kauffman Stadium on June 5.

Kansas City's Billy Butler is 3 for 5 against Walters, and batting .448 during a 15-game hitting streak against the Twins.

Perez also is 3 for 5 versus Walters, and 6 for 12 in the last three games.

      • Preview: Angels (36-43) at Astros (30-49)
        Game: 1
        Venue: Minute Maid Park
        Date: June 28, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

While his overall numbers don't stand out, the Houston Astros' Bud Norris has baffled the Los Angeles Angels this year.

Norris tries to again shut down the visiting Angels, who look for their recent success to carry over in Friday night's series opener.

After allowing three runs in six innings during Saturday's 4-3 road win over the Chicago Cubs, Norris (5-7, 3.60 ERA) is 0-3 with a 4.15 ERA in his last four outings.

The right-hander, though, has looked like a different pitcher in three matchups against the Angels (36-43) this year, winning each while posting a 0.43 ERA.

"I'm sure they're going to find some things on me here soon," Norris told MLB's official website. "They're a good lineup, they know what they're doing over there, but I've got to stick to my strengths and keep going out there and doing what I'm doing because obviously, it's been working so far."

Norris continued his mastery in the series June 1, striking out six over six innings of four-hit ball in a 2-0 win at Los Angeles.

"Every time he pitches against us he's got his 'A' stuff," said Angels outfielder Mike Trout, who's 4 for 10 with three doubles versus Norris. "He was hitting his spots early and locating, and his secondary pitches were good."

Another dominant effort could be hard to come by against an Angels team that's won nine of 14 while hitting .308. Los Angeles is on the verge of a season-best fifth consecutive road win after beating Detroit 3-1 in 10 innings Thursday.

Trout, eight for his last 16 with a homer and five RBIs, had four hits while Albert Pujols delivered the go-ahead double.

"We just need to continue to fight and go to Houston and get ready to play," Pujols said. "We did it last time and caught a little funk, but we just need to continue to swing the bat and continue to pitch."

Owners of the AL's worst record, the Astros (30-49) have taken six of seven from Los Angeles, including the last four while allowing eight runs.

Houston enters this three-game set having won eight of 13 after beating St. Louis 4-3 on Wednesday.

"Those guys have a tremendous lineup and a deep pitching staff," catcher Jason Castro said. "For us to come out and battle and hang with them ... it's reassuring and it's good for the morale around here."

Houston's Chris Carter has two homers, five RBIs and nine runs in his last 10 games, a stretch during which he's hit .361 - significantly higher than his season average of .231.

"His at_bats have gotten extremely disciplined from a standpoint of he's attacking the pitches that he should attack - not expanding (the zone) as often as he was earlier in the year, and he's putting together some really good at_bats," manager Bo Porter said of Carter, whose 108 strikeouts are a major league high.

Carter has hit safely in nine of 10 games versus Los Angeles this year, going 11 for 32 (.344) with five homers and 11 RBIs. He's 1 for 3 with a homer against scheduled starter Jerome Williams (5-3, 3.36).

Filling in for the injured Jason Vargas, Williams allowed a season high-tying five runs and eight hits in six innings Saturday in a 6-1 loss to Pittsburgh. The right-hander gave up both runs and three hits in seven innings opposite Norris earlier this month, dropping to 1-3 with a 4.09 ERA versus Houston.

        • Preview: Giants (38-40) at Rockies (39-41)
          Game: 1
          Venue: Coors Field
          Date: June 28, 2013 8:40 PM EDT

Michael Cuddyer has been especially locked in at the plate of late, but his individual efforts haven't translated into many wins for the Colorado Rockies.

Not much has gone right for the San Francisco Giants, either.

Cuddyer tries to extend the longest hitting streak in franchise history Friday night as the slumping Rockies open a three-game set against the visiting Giants, who hope to avoid a season worst-tying fifth consecutive loss.

One day after hitting a pair of homers in a 5-3 defeat at Boston, Cuddyer extended his hitting streak to 24 games Thursday, going 3 for 4 in a 3-2 loss to the New York Mets.

"Anytime you can put your name in any type of record book for a good thing is a good thing," said Cuddyer, batting .390 with five homers and 16 RBIs during his run. "I'd trade it for a win, though."

The Rockies have dropped 11 of 15, including their last three by a 19-9 margin.

San Francisco (38-40), meanwhile, has lost nine of 12 to fall a season-worst two games under .500. The Giants, who have gone 4 for 25 with runners in scoring position during their four-game skid, suffered five straight defeats April 23-28.

"It's always tough when you're going through a stretch like we're going through," manager Bruce Bochy said following Wednesday's 4-2 road loss to the Dodgers. "The only thing you can do is keep grinding and believe it's going to turn around, which we do."

All-Star third baseman Pablo Sandoval, hitless in his last nine at_bats, is batting .216 with just one homer - his only extra-base hit - and five RBIs during a 19-game stretch.

Sandoval, though, is 7 for his last 14 with two homers, a triple and a double against scheduled starter Jhoulys Chacin (6-3, 3.92 ERA), who's recently struggled in the series. The right-hander yielded a career-high eight runs and nine hits over 5 1-3 innings in an 8-6 loss May 16, dropping to 0-4 with a 6.68 ERA in his last six starts versus San Francisco.

Chacin, however, has won his last three outings overall while posting a 1.74 ERA. He allowed five hits over seven scoreless innings Saturday in a 7-1 victory at Washington.

"He just made a lot of good pitches, with both his fastball and his breaking stuff," Nationals manager Davey Johnson told MLB's official website.

The Giants counter with Barry Zito (4-5, 4.40), who gave up one run and six hits in seven innings Saturday in a 2-1, 11-inning victory over Miami. The left-hander, though, can't be looking forward to hitting the road, where he's 0-4 with an 11.28 ERA - more than nine runs higher than his home mark of 1.98.

"At home, I've caught some breaks and kept stuff done in the zone and I haven't on the road," he said after surrendering eight runs and 11 hits in 4 2-3 innings during a 12-8 loss at Pittsburgh in his last road outing June 12. "I've felt pretty good in some of these starts out on the road, but I just haven't been able to get people out."

Zito went 8-2 with a 2.51 ERA in his first 19 starts against the Rockies before going 0-1 with a 6.94 mark in his last two. He was tagged for five runs and 11 hits over 5 2-3 innings in a 5-0 defeat May 19 in his most recent visit to Coors Field.

Carlos Gonzalez is 12 for 34 with two homers against Zito, and Dexter Fowler is 9 for his last 28 with three doubles. Fowler, though, could miss a third straight game with a sore right wrist.

          • Preview: Cardinals (48-30) at Athletics (46-34)
            Game: 1
            Venue: O.co Coliseum
            Date: June 28, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

The Oakland Athletics have lost a share of the AL West lead, but they're starting to head in the right direction.

Another start by Bartolo Colon could help them stay on that path.

Colon could become the A's first pitcher in eight seasons to win eight consecutive starts Friday night when Oakland opens a three-game set with the visiting St. Louis Cardinals.

With Texas beating the Yankees 2-0 on Thursday, Oakland (46-34) fell one-half game behind the Rangers in the West.

The A's held a two-game division lead two weeks ago, but a 5-7 stretch has them playing catch-up. Oakland, though, is off to an encouraging start to an eight-game homestand after a two-game sweep of Cincinnati.

Manager Bob Melvin's club improved to 7-2 against NL teams with Wednesday's 5-0 victory.

The A's now turn to Colon (10-2, 2.93 ERA), who at 40 is enjoying the best stretch of his 16-year career. The right-hander has won seven consecutive starts for the first time, a period in which he's posted a 1.41 ERA.

The worst of those was his latest, but he was still good enough. Colon yielded a three-run homer and six other hits over eight innings of a 6-3 victory at Seattle last Friday.

He said through a translator that he's doing a better job mixing in offspeed stuff with his fastball, which he throws 85.1 percent of the time.

"He's a veteran guy. He knows himself. He knows what works,' said center fielder Coco Crisp, who should return after missing Wednesday's game due to a family matter. "It's not a fluke.'

No A's pitcher has won eight consecutive starts since Barry Zito in 2005.

Colon hasn't faced the Cardinals since 2007 while with the Angels. He'll likely be throwing to John Jaso, who should return after missing the last five games because of a hand injury.

St. Louis (48-30), meanwhile, arrives at the Coliseum for the first time since taking two of three there from June 15-17, 2007.

The Cardinals are tied with Pittsburgh atop the NL Central after losing for the fourth time in five games Wednesday, 4-3 at Houston.

They'll continue their eight-game trip with Shelby Miller (8-5, 2.35) on the hill. The right-hander leads all rookies in wins and strikeouts (101), but he's been tagged for two homers in two of his last three outings, including a 4-2 loss to Texas on Saturday when he surrendered four runs in 5 2-3 innings.

Yadier Molina should be behind the plate after making his second career start at first base Wednesday. Molina, the NL batting leader at .357, is 2 for 4 in each of the last two games after going 1 for 12 in the previous three.

"He's just got a real good approach and doesn't alter from it when things aren't going how he wants," Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter told the team's official website.

A's slugger Yoenis Cespedes is not performing up to his standards - batting .163 in 12 games since missing two with hamstring tightness - but Melvin doesn't seem too concerned.

"I think it's more of a mental thing," he told the A's official website. "He's not, maybe, 100 percent running down the line. It takes a little time."

Oakland's Josh Donaldson and St. Louis' Allen Craig can both homer in three straight games. Donaldson has done that once before, while Craig has yet to accomplished the feat.

            • Preview: Cubs (33-44) at Mariners (34-45)
              Game: 1
              Venue: Safeco Field
              Date: June 28, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

After starring as one of baseball's top pitchers for most of the season, Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma must find a way to regroup after two straight defeats.

The Mariners might depend on it considering their offensive struggles.

Iwakuma looks to avoid dropping a third straight start Friday night when he takes the mound in the series opener with the Chicago Cubs at Safeco Field.

Iwakuma (7-3, 2.26 ERA) posted a 1.70 ERA while going undefeated in nine straight outings, eight of them quality starts. Then Oakland handed him two straight losses as he gave up eight runs and 14 hits over 12 innings. He went seven innings in last Friday's 6-3 setback, yielding four runs.

"He gave us a chance to win the ballgame, he just wasn't quite as sharp with his secondary stuff," manager Eric Wedge said.

Oakland connected for three homers off Iwakuma, who had held opponents homerless in his previous four starts.

"Overall, I thought I felt pretty good on the mound," he said. "My pitches were there, it's just those home runs that I gave up were not where I wanted them location-wise and they cost me."

Seattle's offense, which is batting an AL-worst .236, continues to sputter, going 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position over the last three contests.

Raul Ibanez remains one of the lone bright spots, homering four times over the last four games, but his 18th of the year couldn't help the Mariners avoid a 4-2 home loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

"We've got to hit. It's time to hit," Wedge said after Seattle (34-45) stranded 10 runners. "You're not going to win games unless you hit."

The Cubs (33-44) have been enjoying some good offense lately, slugging .517 over their last four games while scoring 29 runs. Chicago, which is slugging .404 on the season, has totaled 13 doubles in its last four - the same number it tallied in its previous 12 contests.

Anthony Rizzo is 6 for 15 with six RBIs in the last four, though he was 0 for 4 in Thursday's 7-2 win at Milwaukee. He's also hit safely in 10 of 11 interleague games this season, batting .405 with four homers and 17 RBIs, but he was 1 for 10 with five strikeouts in three games versus Seattle as a rookie in 2011, with San Diego.

Though the Cubs own one of the NL's worst records, they're 8-3 against the AL.

Scheduled starter Travis Wood (5-6, 2.85), is looking to end his own three-game skid. He didn't receive a decision his last time out, however, after yielding three runs over six-plus innings in a 4-3 loss to Houston on Saturday.

"I missed bad," Wood said of his pitch to J.D. Martinez, leading to a three-run homer in the sixth. "It was supposed to be back door and ended it up coming all the way across the plate and that just can't happen."

Both Wood and Iwakuma will be making their first starts against their respective opponents. Wood is 2-3 with a 4.01 ERA in eight career starts versus AL teams, while Iwakuma has never made a start against the NL but went 1-0 with a 5.87 ERA over 7 2-3 innings in six relief appearances last year.

                Game: 2
                Venue: Dodger Stadium
                Date: June 28, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

Yasiel Puig's next challenge is to help the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat a pitcher that has beaten them four straight times.

Puig will try to help the Dodgers post their seventh straight win Friday night when they host John Lannan and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Los Angeles (36-42) seeks its first seven-game run since taking nine straight May 9-18, 2010. Puig was the hero Thursday with a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh inning of a 6-4 victory that opened this four-game set.

Puig had been hitless in three at_bats before his clutch hit and was shaken up crashing into the right field auxiliary scoreboard while trying to track Chase Utley's go-ahead homer in the top of the seventh. He's hitting a major league-best .427 in June, and the infectious Cuban rookie's enthusiasm has rubbed off on his teammates.

``He kind of reminds me of myself,' Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp said of Puig. ``Sometimes he plays too hard, and sometimes you have to tell him: `Man, calm down. You can't make every play.' But he's done an amazing job in his first month in the big leagues. He's gotten big hits and made big plays on defense. He's doing a lot, and I think we're just feeding off the kid.'

Puig is 13 for 26 against left-handers heading into his first look at the southpaw Lannan, who is 4-0 with a 3.95 ERA in his last five starts against the Dodgers.

Lannan (0-2, 5.84 ERA) will make his third start since missing two months with a strained left quadriceps tendon. He lasted five innings in his first one and five-plus Sunday as he surrendered six runs in an 8-0 loss to the Mets.

Hanley Ramirez is 10 for 23 with a homer and three doubles against Lannan, and will likely return to the lineup after not starting Thursday. Ramirez was intentionally walked as a pinch-hitter, and his nine-game hitting streak in which he is batting .485 remains intact.

Dodgers starter Chris Capuano (2-4, 4.09) will take the mound for the third time since missing three weeks with a strained triceps muscle.

The left-hander has thrown 11 scoreless innings since coming back, lasting five on three days' rest Sunday as he did not get a decision in a 3-1 victory at San Diego.

Capuano is 1-2 with a 3.60 ERA in six starts against Philadelphia (38-42), and he has limited Utley to one hit in 10 at_bats.

Utley is 7 for 18 on this road trip after falling a triple short of the cycle during a three-hit effort Thursday in front of College World Series champion UCLA - where the second baseman also played.

Michael Young should be back in the Phillies' lineup. The third baseman was out of it Thursday after nine straight starts.

Delmon Young tied a career high with four hits Thursday as Philadelphia fell despite a 14-7 advantage in hits.

Kemp went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases in his second start after missing nearly a month with a right hamstring strain. He's 3 for 15 against Lannan.

"It's a long season," Kemp said. "We've just got to keep grinding and keep playing good baseball."

Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen may be unavailable Friday. He has pitched five of the previous six nights, going 4 for 4 in save chances in that stretch after recording the final three outs Thursday.

                • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Why doesn't the NBA announce trades as they happen during the draft? Do they want fans/media to be confused?

-- Odd Fact of Day: Head football coaches of both Army, Navy went to college at Hawai'i.

-- Of 125 I-A head football coaches, 62.4% played in Div I-A. 10 didn't play college football. 37 others played non Division-1A football.

-- You wonder if Allen Crabbe being pushed by his coach during a game to get him to play harder hurt his status in the draft.

-- Heat President Pat Riley owns the copyright to the term three-peat, back from when he coached the Lakers.

-- Rough day for ESPN; Bill Raftery jumped to FOX Sports1, where he'll work on the #1 Big East team; also, with all the basketball expertise ESPN employs, how do they put wiseguy Bill Simmons on the panel? Oy.

                  *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Idle thoughts with weekend here.......

                  13) You can wager on which teams will meet in the Super Bowl, like a quinella at the dog track; lowest price is 49ers-Broncos (20-1).

                  12) If Alex Rodriguez is deemed “medically unfit to play”, Bronx Bombers can recoup 80% of his salary via insurance. 80% of $28M is $22.4M they would get back per year for the rest of his hideous contract, which obviously would be a bad hit for the insurance company. Wonder what poor bastards they’ll pass those costs on to?

                  11) Speaking of ARod’s contract and the rest of the $100M disabled list in the Bronx, how does GM Brian Cashman keep his job? They’ve won one World Series since 2000, and the 2000 team had the Bombers’ worst regular season record in the last twenty years.

                  10) Tough travel for the Mets this week, who originally had two off days scheduled; they played in Chicago Tuesday-Wednesday, had a 6pm game in Denver Thursday, then fly home and play the Nationals at home this weekend, with a 1:10 game Saturday.

                  9) Mets’ pitching prospect Zach Wheeler has been less than impressive this season, both in AAA/majors; word comes out now that he may tip his pitches. If he fixes that, his performance should improve a lot.

                  8) If anyone from DirecTV is reading this, could we please get the Pac-12 Network for this season? Please? Good grief, there are enough hideous channels that I’ll never watch. I’d even gladly trade the Big Ten Network for the Pac-12 Network. For what I pay for my service, I should get the channels I want, and yes, I’m whining.

                  7) Wow, Auburn won a national championship in 2010, then went 11-14 the last two years, got smoked 42-14/49-0 by Alabama and now they have a new coach already. 2010 they won the national title; that doesn’t even buy a coach three more years. Amazing the world we live in.

                  6) Lookalikes: the short lawyer on TNT’s Franklin & Bash and Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks.

                  5) Ben McLemore played one year at Kansas, then changed agents before the draft; if I were an NBA that was thinking of drafting him, this would worry me. Not a lot of stability there; stability is a good thing.

                  4) Donald Trump built a golf course in Scotland, and is now calling it “…..the best golf course in the world.” Mr Trump actually ran for President; imagine if he had won? Humility might get stricken from the dictionary.

                  3) Why can’t gay people get married? Isn’t this a free country? Why should some people’s beliefs be imposed on other people? If it makes them happy and doesn’t hurt anyone, so what? Sure as hell I wouldn't want the beliefs of other people imposed on me.

                  2) Dwight Howard doesn’t like Mike D’Antoni’s system? Of course not, its built for players with basketball skills, like running, passing, teamwork and shooting, none of which are Howard’s strengths.

                  1) One thing I neglected to say earlier this week, with regards to the Aaron Hernandez situation: People are innocent until proven guilty; now it looks very bad for him, as news of the evidence and his previous history leaks out, but there is a process in the legal system, so lets see it play out.

Pirates bettors turning huge profits during six-game winning streak
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been the best bet in baseball for most of the season, but they’ve been especially profitable over the past week.

The Pirates have won six straight games to rise to the top of the NL Central standings entering play Thursday.

The Bucs have been underdogs in five of the six contests and any $100 bettor would be up a cool $828.64 if they had wagered on each game of the streak.

Pittsburgh opens a six-game homestand against the Milwaukee Brewers Friday. The Brew Crew is in town for three games before the Philadelphia Phillies roll into PNC Park for a three-game set. The Bucs have a 6-4 record against the Brewers this season and are 3-1 against the Phillies in 2013.

Pirates bettors are up a league-high 24.30 units so far this campaign.

Dodgers no longer worst bet in MLB after six-game run
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ six-game winning streak has pulled them from the bottom of the MLB money rankings, making $525.91 for $100 bettors during this run.

The Dodgers picked up win No. 6 with a 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies as -185 home favorites Thursday. They are outscoring opponents 28-14 during this stretch and are currently -14.61 units on the season after sitting at -21.07 units just one week ago.

Yasiel Puig continues to be the catalyst for L.A.’s sudden turnaround. The rookie outfielder gave the Dodgers the win versus Philadelphia with a two-run single in the seventh inning Thursday and is hitting .427 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs in just 23 games with the big-league club.

The Dodgers are -144 home favorites versus Philadelphia Friday night. Los Angeles sends left-hander Chris Capuano to the mound (2-4, 4.09 ERA) while the Phillies counter with southpaw John Lannan (0-2, 5.84 ERA). Friday’s total is set at eight runs.

The Dodgers have won six of the last eight meetings between these clubs..
