  • Preview: Rangers (44-33) at Yankees (42-34)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Yankee Stadium
    Date: June 26, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

The New York Yankees are hoping to continue their turnaround by adding to their recent dominance against the Texas Rangers. Andy Pettitte is seeking to start his Wednesday night.

Winless since his 250th career victory, Pettitte will try to end his woes by leading the Yankees to another win over the Rangers.

At one point during its 10-game homestand, New York (42-34) suffered its seventh loss in nine contests but has gotten back on track by winning three of its last four. The Yankees have batted .254 and scored 18 runs in those four games after hitting .194 and producing 27 runs during their 2-7 stretch.

They also have a 3.00 ERA in the past four contests after posting a 5.06 mark in the previous nine.

New York's pitchers managed to keep Texas from adding to a two-run lead Tuesday, and that allowed the Yankees to rally for a 4-3 victory. Ichiro Suzuki kept his team out of extra innings with a two-out homer in the ninth, his team's fourth of the game.

New York had hit four home runs in its prior 15 games.

"Love it," manager Joe Girardi said. "Sometimes it's tough to score runs when you're not hitting home runs. We got enough tonight."

The win was the 12th in the past 16 matchups with the Rangers (44-33), who had won a season-high five in a row, and 12th in the last 14 home meetings.

Pettitte (5-5, 4.20) will seek to help New York beat Texas again while trying to avoid losing three straight starts for the first time since 2008.

The left-hander is 0-2 with a 5.93 ERA in his two starts since becoming the 45th pitcher to reach the 250-win plateau. He gave up five runs over 6 2-3 innings Thursday in an 8-3 loss to Tampa Bay.

"I just need to be better," Pettitte told the team's website. "I need to shut these guys down once in a while and give us a chance to score first one time instead of always being in a hole. And I feel like I'm putting us in a hole every time out right now."

Pettitte is 13-10 with a 4.82 ERA in 27 career starts against the Rangers, including four in the postseason, and will face them for the first time since an 8-0 loss in Game 3 of the 2010 ALCS.

Justin Grimm, meanwhile, will make his first appearance against the Yankees as he looks to build on his best outing in what's been a difficult month. Grimm (6-5, 5.57) gave up three runs over five innings in last Wednesday's 9-4 victory over Oakland after going 0-2 with an 11.40 ERA in his first three starts in June.

"He's been working hard, and he's been battling," manager Ron Washington told the team's website. "It's always been one inning for him, but tonight we were able to come back, get back in the ballgame, take the lead and hold on to it."

Girardi's next win will be the 600th of his career. He's earned 521 of those wins in his six seasons with New York.

With his next victory, Pettitte will tie Bob Gibson for 44th on the all-time list.

    • Preview: Diamondbacks (41-35) at Nationals (38-38)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Nationals Park
      Date: June 26, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

Washington's Jordan Zimmermann hasn't lost at Nationals Park in more than 13 months.

He'll look to make it 20 consecutive home starts without a defeat when he takes the mound against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.

Zimmermann (10-3, 2.26 ERA) is 7-0 with a 0.92 ERA in eight home starts this season, and the Nationals (38-38) have won his last 11 outings in the nation's capital. He hasn't lost at home since falling to Pittsburgh on May 17, 2012.

The right-hander has been particularly sharp in his three home starts this month, yielding three unearned runs and 12 hits over 23 innings. That includes Thursday against Colorado, when he gave up an unearned run and six hits in eight innings in a 5-1 victory.

"It seems like he's been pitching like this all year," catcher Kurt Suzuki told the Nationals' official website. "He's had a couple of hiccups here and there, but this is Jordan."

Zimmermann, who is one win shy of Detroit's Max Scherzer for the most in the majors, has a 3.55 ERA in losing his only two home starts against the Diamondbacks. He'll be facing an Arizona lineup that broke out of its offensive funk late in Tuesday's 7-5 series-opening loss to Washington.

The Diamondbacks (41-35), who lost 4-2 to Cincinnati on Sunday, fell behind 6-0 after five innings Tuesday before scoring in each of the final four frames.

Martin Prado snapped a 3-for-24 skid with two hits - one of six Arizona players to finish with multiple hits. Paul Goldschmidt recorded three hits for the second time in four games, and is 11 for 27 (.407) with four homers and seven RBIs over his last seven contests.

The Nationals are also looking a bit better at the plate. They've scored 13 in their last two after plating 20 in their previous seven.

Adam LaRoche led Washington on Tuesday, going 3 for 4 with a three-run home run, his 11th of the season. He had gone 22 straight games without a homer since hitting two May 28.

Anthony Rendon has four multihit performances in his last five games, going 9 for 22, and is batting .412 in his last eight home games.

The Nationals' offense could be boosted by the potential return of Ryan Zimmerman, who got an extra day of rest Tuesday due to discomfort in his surgically repaired right shoulder, according to manager Davey Johnson. Zimmerman, who pinch-hit in the seventh and popped out, is 3 for 5 with two doubles lifetime against scheduled starter Wade Miley (4-6, 4.70).

Miley has fared better on the road this season, posting a 3.96 ERA away from home. While he has 17 walks in 24 1-3 innings at Chase Field, the left-hander has issued 14 base on balls over 63 2-3 innings on the road.

His lack of control at home was evident Friday against Cincinnati, when he walked four and gave up three runs in 4 2-3 innings. He did not get a decision in an 11-5 win.

Miley is 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA in two starts against the Nationals. He shut Washington out through six innings in his only career start at Nationals Park in 2011.

      • Preview: Mets (30-43) at White Sox (32-42)
        Game: 2
        Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
        Date: June 26, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

Shaun Marcum has finished five consecutive seasons with a winning record.

The right-hander is still looking for his first win with the New York Mets, however, as he takes the mound against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.

"It's been a three-month ordeal for me," said Marcum, signed by the Mets this year after two winning seasons with Milwaukee and three for Toronto.

Marcum (0-9, 5.76 ERA) has lost four straight starts for New York (30-43). A lack of offensive help has been a problem all season, as his 2.43 run support average would be the lowest in the majors if he had thrown enough innings to qualify. However, Marcum hasn't done much to help himself in his last two outings, posting a 9.58 ERA.

He had a season-high four walks and allowed five runs in 4 2-3 innings of last Wednesday's 5-3 loss in Atlanta. It was his shortest start since May 10.

"He's had some rough starts, but he's also pitched very well at times," manager Terry Collins said.

The good news for Marcum is that he's always fared well versus the White Sox, though he hasn't faced them since 2010. All five starts he made against them were Toronto victories as he went 3-0 with a 2.48 ERA. Chicago is the only AL team to which he's never lost besides Texas.

The White Sox (32-42) nearly suffered an ugly loss Tuesday, when Gordon Beckham flubbed a pop-up in the ninth inning to allow the tying run to come home for the Mets. However, Alexei Ramirez's RBI single in the bottom of the inning gave Chicago a 5-4 win.

"You're at a loss to describe it," manager Robin Ventura said. "At least they gathered together and scored a run in the next inning. But it's just a communication thing, and you got to clean it up."

The White Sox are tied for fifth in the majors with 54 errors, including two in the eighth inning Sunday that helped Kansas City steal a 7-6 victory.

John Danks (1-4, 5.40) also has had a rough go of it. The left-hander hasn't had much help from his teammates, getting 17 runs of support over six starts this season.

Then again, Danks hasn't pitched very well in his last two outings and lost both, recording an 8.18 ERA while opposing batters hit .354. That includes Thursday's 8-4 loss at Minnesota as he surrendered 12 hits and four home runs, both career highs, while giving up six runs in five innings.

"You can't just point out one thing that's gone wrong at this point," said Danks, who has never faced the Mets.

At least he's back at U.S. Cellular Field, where he has a 2.57 ERA on the season compared to 7.29 on the road. Nine of the 10 home runs Danks has allowed have come away from home.

New York's Eric Young snapped a streak of three straight multihit games Tuesday, but he did record a double for the fourth straight game. Prior to Friday, he had gone 15 straight games without an extra-base hit.

        • Preview: Braves (45-33) at Royals (35-39)
          Game: 2
          Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
          Date: June 26, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

The Atlanta Braves have broken out over their past two games.

They'll look to turn their offensive momentum into a third straight win as they close a two-game set against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

The Braves (45-33) had batted .205 while losing five of six and were held to three runs or fewer in all of those losses. But they scored four times in the first inning at Milwaukee Sunday and posted a three-run fifth in their 4-3 victory over the Royals (35-39) on Tuesday. After they were held scoreless with six hits over two losses, they have 11 runs and 24 hits in two wins.

Freddie Freeman reached base twice Tuesday to snap out of a 2-for-24 (.083) skid though he still hasn't recorded an extra-base hit since his walk-off home run against the Mets on June 17. Jason Heyward, who was previously mired in a 6-for-33 (.182) slump, recorded two hits, including a home run, in Atlanta's opener against Kansas City.

"I was just looking for a pitch in the zone to hit,' Heyward said.

All of this is welcome news for Atlanta's Mike Minor (8-3, 2.89 ERA), who has a 6.00 ERA over his last two starts after compiling a 2.44 ERA through his first 13. Minor's struggles carried into his last outing Thursday, when he gave up nine hits and four runs, including three homers, in a 4-3 loss to the Mets.

"The home runs were just bad pitches,' Minor said. "Fastball over the middle, hanging curveball and a first-pitch hanging slider, so give credit to those guys. They were bad pitches. They took them out of the yard.'

Minor will look to return to his old ways on the road, where he is seventh in the majors with a 2.38 ERA. A win Wednesday would move him into a first-place tie with St. Louis' Adam Wainwright with seven road wins.

The Royals accounted for one of Minor's three losses on the season, even though the left-hander held them to one run and five hits in six innings of the Braves' 1-0 loss April 17.

Kansas City has dropped five of six, scoring 12 runs in those defeats. Billy Butler hasn't helped matters, going 3 for 18 (.167) with no extra-base hits during the team's skid. Kansas City's slump comes in spite of the best efforts of Mike Moustakas, who has hit .474 over that stretch. The third baseman saw his streak of four straight multi-hit games snapped Tuesday but still managed a double and a walk.

Butler and Moustakas will look to give Luis Mendoza (2-4, 4.30) some much-needed support. The right-hander has received just 14 runs of support over his last seven starts, five of which the Royals have lost. He is winless at home this season with a 5.88 ERA.

Mendoza surrendered four runs, four hits and three walks in five innings of Kansas City's 6-3 loss at Cleveland Wednesday.

After losing 11 straight games at Kauffman Stadium earlier this season, the Royals have won eight of their last 12 at home.

          • Preview: Cubs (31-44) at Brewers (32-43)
            Game: 2
            Venue: Miller Park
            Date: June 26, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

Facing the Chicago Cubs might offer Yovani Gallardo a good opportunity to carry his recent road success back to Milwaukee.

The right-hander looks to avoid a career-high fourth consecutive home loss and help the Brewers hand the Cubs a 10th straight defeat at Miller Park on Wednesday night.

Gallardo (6-6, 4.09 ERA) has not allowed an earned run in 21 innings while giving up 12 hits to go 2-0 in his last three starts - all on the road. He was charged with three unearned runs and five hits in seven innings of a 7-4, 10-inning loss at Houston on Thursday.

"I know for a fact the guys behind me don't want to make errors," he said. "They want to get every out they can. That is just how it is. As a pitcher, you have to move past it, whether it's an error or a misplayed ball. You have to focus on the next guy."

Gallardo's focus has generally been very good when facing the Cubs (31-44), going 7-2 with a 2.95 ERA in 14 starts against them. Chicago has won only once in seven matchups with Gallardo at Miller Park as he's gone 4-1 with a 2.66 ERA.

However, the Brewers have lost his past four starts there and he's lost the last three while posting a 6.75 ERA. It's his longest home losing streak since dropping three in a row in 2009.

Gallardo, though, hasn't pitched at Miller Park in three weeks, and the Brewers (32-43) have won six of seven at home after a 9-3 victory over Chicago on Tuesday. Rickie Weeks hit two homers and had four RBIs as Milwaukee used a five-run fifth inning to erase a two-run deficit.

Weeks is batting .439 with five homers and nine RBIs in his last 14 games to raise his average from .182 to .230.

"It feels good," he said. "It's just one of those things where you keep working on things, and just go out there and play ball. There's no satisfaction. There's no big answer. Just go out there and play ball like I've been doing."

Teammate Jean Segura, batting .334, collected his NL-leading 100th hit Tuesday with an RBI double. He's hitting .368 in five games against the Cubs in 2013.

Fellow shortstop Starlin Castro should be back in Chicago's lineup after his NL-leading streak of 269 consecutive games played ended Tuesday. He's batting .129 with no homers and three RBIs in his last 23 games.

Castro has hit .156 and Darwin Barney .107 during the Cubs' nine-game losing streak at Milwaukee. They've been outscored 52-22 in that span and have dropped 19 of 21 there.

"We lost nine straight?" said Anthony Rizzo, batting .308 in seven career games at Miller Park. "(I had) no idea. I don't know if anyone in this clubhouse knows that."

Scheduled starter Scott Feldman (6-6, 3.39) dropped to 0-4 with a 6.65 ERA this season against NL Central opponents after he allowed five runs and four walks in 5 1-3 innings of a 6-1 loss at St. Louis on Thursday.

The right-hander yielded three unearned runs and three hits in five innings of a 4-2 loss at Milwaukee on April 21.

Nate Schierholtz is 6 for 12 with two homers and six RBIs in the last three games for the Cubs, who have dropped six of nine.

            • Preview: Cardinals (48-29) at Astros (29-49)
              Game: 2
              Venue: Minute Maid Park
              Date: June 26, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

After his worst outing in a stellar season, the St. Louis Cardinals' Lance Lynn quickly regained his dominant form. Given his performances against Houston over his career, there's a good chance he could show that again Wednesday night.

The right-hander will seek to reach 11 wins before the All-Star break for the second straight season in the series finale against the Astros.

Lynn (10-1, 3.42 ERA) gave up a career-high seven runs and nine hits in five innings in Miami on June 15 but got enough run support to earn the win in a 13-7 victory. Five days later against the Chicago Cubs, he yielded only a solo homer and two singles over six frames in a 6-1 win.

"He had a whole different disposition and pitched with a lot of confidence," manager Mike Matheny said. "You could tell he had a good feel for the ball."

In his first full major league season, Lynn was 11-4 before the 2012 All-Star break. He finished fourth in the NL with 18 victories, with three of them coming against former NL Central foe Houston. He is 4-0 with a 1.48 ERA in four career starts versus the Astros (29-49).

The Cardinals (48-29) blew out Houston 13-5 in the first interleague matchup between the clubs Tuesday for their 11th win in 12 meetings.

St. Louis scored seven runs in the fourth inning, matching its output from a three-game sweep to Texas this weekend. After being moved into the cleanup spot, Allen Craig led the way with a season-high four hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs.

"You're going to have tough weekends because there are good teams out there and very good pitchers and sometimes it's just hard to pull it off," Matheny said. "Our guys went out and kind of did the same thing that they usually do."

The Astros, meanwhile, have suffered back-to-back losses after winning seven of 10. Erik Bedard (2-3, 4.43) will try to help his last-place club get back on track with another superb outing.

Bedard has allowed two runs over 13 1-3 innings in his last two games, and is 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA in his last eight starts. He allowed one run and matched a season high with eight strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings - his most since May 20, 2011 - but did not get a decision in last Wednesday's 3-1 loss to Milwaukee.

"Bedard was outstanding, and he gave us everything he had," manager Bo Porter said. "He did a tremendous job and pitched well enough to get the win. Unfortunately, we were not able to hold the lead."

Bedard hasn't been outstanding in his matchups against the Cardinals, recording a 9.64 ERA in losing his last two against them.

Matt Holliday, who was dropped from the No. 3 spot in the lineup to fifth for the first time this season Tuesday, is 8 for 20 all-time against Bedard. Yadier Molina, batting .472 in his last 11 games against Houston, has three doubles and a home run in his eight at_bats versus the left-hander.

              • Preview: Giants (38-39) at Dodgers (34-42)
                Game: 3
                Venue: Dodger Stadium
                Date: June 26, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw and San Francisco Giants' Tim Lincecum have been at their best in recent matchups against each other's teams.

Kershaw, though, has earned victories in the past four meetings between NL Cy Young Award winners and will try to earn another while helping the Dodgers extend their season-high win streak to five games Wednesday night.

Kershaw (5-5, 2.06 ERA) hasn't won since May 20 despite allowing three runs or fewer in four of his last five starts.

His latest outing wasn't one of those. He gave up four runs over six innings in a 5-2 defeat in San Diego on Friday, and the Dodgers' poor run support for him continued.

Los Angeles (34-42) gave him one run in that game and has provided him with an average of 2.7 per nine innings this season, fewest among NL starters.

"You control what you can control," Kershaw told the team's website. "I can't control wins and losses. I can control not giving up runs. I have to pitch consistently, that's all I can do."

Kershaw, though, hasn't needed too much help when facing San Francisco lately. He's 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA in the last three matchups, including two this season.

Kershaw is also 9-4 with a 1.29 ERA in 18 career starts against the Giants (38-39), his best ERA against any NL opponent.

He'll try to add to those numbers while pitching opposite Lincecum (4-7, 4.52), who is 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his last four starts against the Dodgers.

The right-hander has also struggled with poor run support lately, getting a combined seven runs in his last seven games. That has helped limit him to one win this month despite a 2.92 ERA in four starts.

Lincecum gave up three runs and four hits over seven innings while striking out eight Friday against Miami but did not get a decision in a 6-3 loss.

"For the most part I felt good. I just made a couple of mistakes," he said. "You think you're making the right pitches and you get groundballs, but they don't go where you want them. That's the most frustrating part of the day. They scratched out a couple of runs."

Lincecum, a two-time Cy Young winner, will square off with Kershaw for the first time since the Dodgers' left-hander won the his only award in 2011.

While trying to beat Kershaw this time, Lincecum will seek to help the Giants avoid a fourth straight loss. San Francisco's attempt to snap that skid fell just short Tuesday in a 6-5 defeat, as it dropped below .500 this late into the season for the first time since the end of the 2008 campaign.

Brandon Belt homered in the seventh and doubled in the ninth to help cut a four-run deficit. Marco Scutaro's long fly ball, though, was tracked down by Matt Kemp to end the game.

Kemp also singled in his return from a stint on the disabled list for a strained right hamstring.

"I can't play timid. I have to let it go," he said. "And if it goes, it goes. Hamstrings are tricky, and you never know when they're good. But right now it feels good and I'm glad we got the win.'

Kemp, batting .127 in his last 14 games against the Giants, is 0 for 10 versus Lincecum the past two seasons.

                • Preview: Phillies (37-41) at Padres (39-39)
                  Game: 3
                  Venue: PETCO Park
                  Date: June 26, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The losses are piling up far too fast for Cole Hamels. Perhaps facing a team whom he has historically dominated will bring him better fortune.

The Philadelphia Phillies send Hamels to the mound Wednesday night against the host San Diego Padres.

Hamels (2-11, 4.50 ERA) not only leads the major leagues in losses, but he's already tied his career-worst total for a season from 2009 and 2010.

"It does get frustrating at times," he said. "I'm striving to win. When I make a (bad) pitch, it seems to break the game open."

In the three-time All-Star's defense, his 3.06 run support average is one of the majors' lowest. He's received a combined three runs of support over his last five road starts while going 0-4.

But Hamels squandered a 3-0 lead at home his last time out, giving up four runs over six innings in a 4-3 loss to the Mets on Friday.

"It's a process. You can't be selfish in this game," Hamels said. "If you want to be a team player, you can't put the selfish side in there. I'm not doing my part because I'm not defending enough runs when I get runs."

The Padres (39-39) could be a good opponent for Hamels to face to turn things around, as he's won his last five starts against them while yielding three runs over 37 innings. He's 8-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 13 career starts versus San Diego, and his .186 opponents' batting average in those games is his second-lowest against one team.

Hamels wouldn't mind some support from Domonic Brown, who ended a 14-game homerless drought with a three-run shot in a 6-2 victory Tuesday for the Phillies (37-41). The drought matched his longest of the season, but he followed the first with 17 home runs over the next 39 contests.

"I was just trying to hit something in the middle the other way and I just reacted to the ball," said Brown, second in the NL with 20 homers.

Looking to keep him from leaving the yard Wednesday will be Robbie Erlin (1-0, 4.15) as he makes his second career start while filling in for the injured Clayton Richard.

The left-hander won his first major league start June 1, limiting Toronto to two runs over 6 2-3 innings in a 4-3 victory. He also gave up two runs over two innings in two relief appearances earlier in the season.

He'll be recalled from Triple-A Tucson for Wednesday's outing.

"We liked what we saw when he beat the Blue Jays," manager Bud Black said. "He's getting to a point where he's about to break through."

Ryan Howard was 0 for 4 on Tuesday but walked and scored a run after missing Monday's series opener with a sore left knee. He's batting .392 with 11 RBIs over his last 14 contests.

Cameron Maybin, still out with a torn ligament in his left knee, is the only Padre hitting better than .286 in more than four at_bats against Hamels. Chase Headley, Nick Hundley and Chris Denorfia are a combined 7 for 43 (.163) versus the southpaw.

                    • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Ilya Bryzgalov was two seasons into a $51 million, nine-year contract he signed in 2011, but the Flyers bought out the goalie's contract out, saving them $6M a year off the salary cap for the next seven years.

-- Tigers made six errors in an ugly 14-8 home loss to the Angels.

-- Ichiro Suzuki's walkoff HR Tuesday was just the second of his career; the first was four years ago, against Mariano Rivera.

-- Wyoming's leading returning rusher,. D.J. May suffered a torn pectoral muscle a couple of weeks ago during voluntary summer workouts. The recovery time for the injury is nine months, so he'll probably miss the entire 2013 season.

-- UCLA won its first national title in baseball, beating Mississippi State two straight games; they had 27,127 fans in Omaha for the CWS.

-- If you bet the under on Mets-White Sox last night, don't watch Sports Center today; you won't like what you see.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud............

                      13) Bought a new laptop this week and I had to call the Time Warner people to get the right code so I can get on the Internet, so I’m talking to the woman and I ask her where she is. Where do you think Time-Warner’s help desk is? Try Manila in the Phillipines- they’re 12 hours ahead of New York.

                      12) Miguel Cabrera has been intentionally walked nine times in front of Prince Fielder this season; Fielder is 5-9 with nine RBI in the AB following the intentional walks.

                      11) In case you’re interested, July 20 is National Lollipop Day. Just thought you’d like to know.

                      10) According to ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla, who knows stuff, there will be five foreign players in first round of the NBA Draft, three in the top 20.

                      9) Puigonometry—ESPN.com reports that Yasiel Puig is hitting .531 in at-bats that end in the first three pitches, only .286 in at-bats of 4+ pitches. He’s walked only three times.

                      8) Canucks/Rangers basically traded head coaches; weird thing is that coaching hockey in Vancouver is the job that is in more of a fishbowl. There is so much going on in NYC, hockey is not the huge deal that it is in British Columbia.

                      7) Terrible flooding in Calgary; a lot of damage was done to the Saddledome, where the 1988 Olympics were held and where NHL’s Flames have played since—odd sight online was the costume head of (Flames’ mascot) Harvey the Hound floating in the flood waters inside the arena.

                      6) If you read this website, you know I despite the Bronx Bombers, to the point of never calling them by their actual name, but I will root for them if it helps the A’s, like this week when they play Texas. You have to root for your own team first, even if it makes you root for evil now and then.

                      5) Rays-Blue Jays is good series between AL East contenders this week, and prospect Will Myers’ home debut was Monday night, but only 11,407 fans showed up in St Pete.

Rays are going to wind up moving and people in the Bay Area will whine, but they haven’t supported this spunky team nearly well enough.

                      4) Back in the 60’s/early 70’s, not every hitter wore a batting helmet; some guys wore a plastic insert inside their cap. Last two I can remember doing that were Detroit’s Norm Cash and Bob Montgomery, the Red Sox’ backup catcher.

Anyway, I’m thinking some pitchers may take to using those inserts to protect themselves from line drives. Still wouldn’t protect the face, but would protect the areas above the ears.

                      3) Has anyone ever had a fried bologna sandwich? It sounds awful, but they sell ‘em in Toby Keith’s bar in Las Vegas, so somebody must like them.

                      2) Of the five major college conferences (SEC-ACC-Big Dozen-Big X-Pac-12), that’s 64 teams (I think…..lol), only five (Kansas State-Ole Miss-Mississippi State-Pitt-Virginia Tech) have never won an NCAA championship in any sport.

                      1) If you’re a kid who plays college football and your team qualifies for a bowl, which of these three cities would you rather travel to at the end of December? Bronx-Boise-Shreveport?

All three cities have minor bowl games, but I’m thinking Shreveport is by far the most attractive choice. Who wants to go to a bowl game and freeze?

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three good teams with bad bullpens burning MLB bettors
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No matter how good a ball team is, a bad bullpen can spoil the party quicker than your parents catching the early flight home from Florida.

Those late-inning collapses especially sting when you're wagering on a good team priced as lofty favorites on the MLB moneylines. Here are three contending teams having their solid efforts - and backers’ bankrolls - wiped out by unreliable relievers:

                              Detroit Tigers (42-32, -5.89 units)

Starter ERA: 3.58 (sixth in MLB)
Bullpen ERA: 3.99 (21st in MLB)

The Tigers glaring weakness is their bullpen. That statement was punctuated when the club dropped closer Jose Valverde last week after three blown saves and 5.59 ERA out of the pen. Detroit is leaning on Joaquin Benoit to become the new closer while potential pen additions iron out issues in Triple-A Toledo. Lefty Phil Coke has his days but is 0-4 with an ERA north of 6.00.

                              Cincinnati Reds (45-32, +3.77 units)

Starter ERA: 3.23 (second in MLB)
Bullpen ERA: 3.95 (19th in MLB)

Cincinnati’s relievers came through for bettors as -145 favorites at Arizona Monday night which was almost enough to erase a 5-3 loss to the Pirates last Thursday, in which reliever Alfredo Simon coughed up three runs in the seventh. The Reds have watched leads dissolve in the final innings over the past two weeks, with the bullpen tallying 10 blown saves on the year. Injuries to key relievers and the downfall of closer Aroldis Chapman, who has blown three of those saves, are the main culprits.

                              Boston Red Sox (45-33, +5.05)

Starter ERA: 3.80 (10th in MLB)
Bullpen ERA: 4.12 (24th in MLB)

The chess match between the Red Sox and Yankees in the American League East could come down to bullpens. New York’s relievers have blown an MLB-low three saves so far while Boston’s bullpen has given 11 wins away in the final inning. The BoSox took recent losses to Detroit and Tampa Bay after their backups crumbled, forcing manager John Farrell, notorious for over-managing his bullpen, to strip Andrew Bailey of the closer role in place of southpaw Andrew Miller, who promptly blew a save in his first outing as closer.
