  • Preview: Dodgers (30-42) at Padres (38-36)
    Game: 4
    Venue: PETCO Park
    Date: June 23, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Dodgers will do anything to string together some victories.

Offering to pitch on short rest, veteran Chris Capuano tries to help the visiting Dodgers win consecutive games for the first time in a little more than two weeks Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

Zack Greinke allowed one run over eight innings and got homers from Adrian Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez in Los Angeles' 6-1 win at San Diego on Saturday. It was Greinke's first outing against the Padres (38-37) since he broke his collarbone in a brawl with Carlos Quentin in April.

It's also the fourth win in 13 games for the Dodgers (31-42), who will try to split the four-game set by winning back-to-back contests for the first time since June 6-7.

"You hope this is the start of something special, a run that gets us back into the thick of things,' Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis said. "Then again, we've thought that before and said that before and it hasn't happened. We just need to go do it. It's time for us to start playing better.'

With victories at a premium and manager Don Mattingly opting not to pitch talented rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu on short rest, Capuano (2-4, 4.62 ERA) stepped up to the challenge.

The left-hander, who turns 35 in August, has not started on three days' rest following a start since 2005. He threw 84 pitches Wednesday when he came off his second 2013 stint on the disabled list to allow three hits in six innings of a 6-0 win at Yankee Stadium.

"Obviously, there's a sense of urgency there," Mattingly told the Dodgers' official website. "He sees we're not putting wins on the board, and he wants to change it. I like the fact he wants to do it. I still wouldn't do it unless everybody thought it was OK and everybody checked off."

After throwing 2 2-3 scoreless innings of relief against the Padres this season, Capuano gave up five runs in two innings of a 9-2 loss to San Diego on April 16.

Gonzalez's homer is his only hit in 12 at_bats in this series against his former team.

Ramirez, meanwhile, is 10 for 18 with two homers and six RBIs in five contests after going 3 for 20 in his first nine games following a monthlong stint on the DL.

Chase Headley had two of the five hits Saturday for the Padres, whose eight-game home winning streak ended with their third defeat in 12 overall.

Headley is 4 for 11 in the series, and 4 for 10 with a double and a home run against Capuano.

San Diego's Andrew Cashner (5-3, 3.56) is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 11 appearances against the Dodgers, but this will be the first time he'll face them as a starter.

The right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.65 ERA as a starter at home this season, compared to 1-2 with a 4.37 ERA in six on the road. Cashner overcame a season-high 10 hits to allow three runs and strike out six in 6 2-3 innings while not factoring in the decision of a 5-4 loss at San Francisco on Tuesday.

"I threw the ball well, though there are a couple of pitches I'd like back,' Cashner said.

    • Preview: Reds (44-31) at Diamondbacks (40-33)
      Game: 3
      Venue: Chase Field
      Date: June 23, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

If the Arizona Diamondbacks are to record their first home sweep of the Cincinnati Reds in 10 years, they likely must find a way to end Mat Latos' dominance at Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks look to do both while trying to match a season high with their fifth consecutive victory and hand the Reds a fourth straight defeat Sunday.

One night after Arizona (41-33) pounded out 15 hits in an 11-5 win over Cincinnati, Jason Kubel delivered a two-run single off Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the ninth inning for 4-3 comeback victory Saturday.

Cincinnati's Mike Leake and Arizona's Patrick Corbin engaged in a pitchers' duel before Gerardo Parra gave the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in sixth. Jay Bruce tied it in the ninth with his second home run of the game before the hosts prevailed.

The Reds (44-32) had won three straight and 12 of 14 at Arizona prior to this series, but are now in danger of being swept there for the first time since June 20-22, 2003.

"It's a tough one to swallow but we will be right back there (Sunday)," said Leake, who allowed two runs and four hits in eight innings.

Cincinnati should feel confident behind Latos (6-1, 3.20 ERA), who is 2-0 with a 1.73 ERA in four starts at Chase Field.

The right-hander was 10-0 with a 2.80 ERA in 21 regular season starts before he allowed three runs in the first and three hits over five innings while striking out nine in a 4-0 loss to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

"I was aggravated with myself,' Latos said. "I didn't throw too well in the bullpen and kind of took it into the first. I beat myself (Tuesday). It's always hard when you put your team in a 3-0 hole.'

Cincinnati's defeat Saturday overshadowed Bruce's continued power display.

The right-fielder drove in all three runs and matched a career high by homering in his fourth consecutive game. All seven of Bruce's hits in his last 29 at_bats have been home runs.

He is 3 for 8 in the series after going 0 for 19 in his previous five games versus Arizona.

Parra has homered in back-to-back games for the first time in his career, and is batting .356 with seven RBIs in his last 15 overall.

      He's 4 for 12 against Latos.

Randall Delgado (0-0, 4.00) gets a second straight start Sunday since he was recalled from the minors this week. Arizona manager Kirk Gibson has decided to go with a four-man rotation with Brandon McCarthy injured and Ian Kennedy in the midst of a 10-game suspension.

Delgado gave up two runs and struck out six without a walk in seven innings of a 3-2 win over Miami on Tuesday.

"When he came up and threw (earlier this month) he wasn't as aggressive as he could be,' Gibson said. "But you could see he shortened his motion and focused on locating the ball more. I think in spring training we were looking at a guy who was more of a thrower.'

The right-hander went 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts against the Reds while pitching for Atlanta last season.

      • Preview: Athletics (0-0) at Mariners (33-43)
        Game: 3
        Venue: Safeco Field
        Date: June 23, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

After a forgettable first few starts, the Oakland Athletics' Jarrod Parker has been at the top of his game.

The Seattle Mariners' Jeremy Bonderman is also thriving after a disastrous season debut.

Seeking a career-high fifth consecutive win, Parker takes the mound opposite Bonderman as the visiting Athletics conclude a three-game set against the Mariners on Sunday.

Parker (6-6, 4.30 ERA) opened 1-5 with a 7.34 ERA but has since turned a corner, going 5-1 with a 2.43 ERA and a .177 opponents' batting average. The right-hander has been especially good in his last five starts, compiling a 4-0 record while allowing two or zero earned runs in each.

Parker outpitched Yu Darvish in Tuesday's 6-2 win at Texas, allowing two runs and three hits over seven innings.

"My changeup was pretty good," he told MLB's official website. "It's starting to come back to where I can throw it for a strike or put it down in the zone for a punchout."

Despite averaging a lackluster 6.10 strikeouts per nine innings, Parker's still getting the job done.

"He just finds a way to throw the right pitch at the right time," Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz said.

Although Parker has compiled a 9.31 ERA while losing two career home starts against the Mariners (33-43), he's 2-0 with a 2.70 mark in Seattle. He walked a season-high four but yielded three runs and three hits in 6 1-3 innings in a 4-3 victory at Safeco Field on May 11.

Bonderman (1-1, 3.28), meanwhile, continues to impress after missing the previous two seasons due to injury. The right-hander has gone 1-0 with a 0.90 ERA in three starts since being tagged for seven runs in 4 2-3 innings in a loss to Minnesota on June 2.

"When you look at the physical shape he's in and how hard he's worked to come back, it was a good guy to give an opportunity to - and it was worth it," manager Eric Wedge said of Bonderman, who was signed to a minor league contract this offseason.

Bonderman allowed a run and six hits over six innings Tuesday in a 3-2, 10-inning road win over the Los Angeles Angels. He's 4-3 with a 3.49 ERA in eight regular-season starts against the A's, but hasn't faced them since 2010.

Coco Crisp is Oakland's only hitter with significant experience against Bonderman, going 10 for 42 (.238) with a homer and three doubles.

The A's (44-33) took Friday's series opener 6-3 before falling 7-5 Saturday - their sixth defeat in nine games. Raul Ibanez hit a game-tying three-run homer in the seventh inning and Nick Franklin gave Seattle the lead with a two-run single in the eighth.

Franklin went 3 for 5 and has hit safely in 10 of 11 games, going 15 for 44 (.341) with two homers and 10 RBIs.

"For him to be able to stay calm in those situations and for him to be able to stay disciplined like that is huge,' Ibanez said. "He's a really heads-up player. He plays very, very mature.

        "He's been very impressive.'

Ibanez has seven home runs and 17 RBIs in his last 18 home contests. Seattle has won seven straight and 10 of 13 at home when Ibanez drives in at least one run.

The Mariners have taken five of eight in the series.

        • Preview: Pirates (45-30) at Angels (33-42)
          Game: 3
          Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
          Date: June 23, 2013 3:35 PM EDT

Joe Blanton has started to show signs of improvement during a dreadful season. But with the way Pedro Alvarez has been swinging the bat lately - and historically against Blanton - the right-hander could be a mistake away from another rough outing.

Still looking for his first home win, Blanton takes the mound as the Los Angeles Angels try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

Blanton (1-10, 5.62 ERA) has suffered more losses than any AL pitcher, though he's recorded quality starts in four of his last five outings. Only three of his first nine were quality starts.

He received an eight-day layoff between his last two starts, dedicating time to polish his fastball command with pitching coach Mike Butcher. He responded by striking out a career-high 11 for the second time in three starts while giving up two runs over 6 2-3 innings in a 3-2 loss to Seattle on Tuesday.

Both runs came on solo homers, however, and he's allowed seven home runs through his last four starts. Blanton gave up eight homers in his previous 10 starts.

"The outcome of a game is kind of out of your hands sometimes, but your job is to keep it right there," Blanton said. "I've given up home runs before. You know how to come back."

He also needed a season-high 118 pitches to get through the outing and walked two.

"Throwing strikes is one thing, and commanding the zone is another," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Joe has the ability to throw strikes. It's just making that quality pitch in a good zone that has kind of wavered a little bit in his game, and that's when he's had trouble."

Blanton has had mixed results against the Pirates, going 2-2 with a 4.66 over six starts, but the most recent was a disaster. He was charged with eight runs and seven hits - including three homers - over 4 1-3 innings in a 10-6 loss at Pittsburgh on Aug. 16, while with the Dodgers.

Alvarez, who homered in his third straight game for the first time in his career Saturday to power the Pirates (45-30) to a 6-1 win Saturday, accounted for one of those home runs. He's 6 for 9 with two homers and a double when facing Blanton.

The Pittsburgh slugger also doubled Saturday against the Angels (33-42) to extend his hitting streak to seven games, during which he's batting .393 with four homers and 12 RBIs.

Andrew McCutchen and Gaby Sanchez also connected on home runs in the Pirates' fourth consecutive game with 10 or more hits.

"This is the way we should come out and play every day. We don't have to depend on just one or two guys. Everybody's coming through," McCutchen said. "To have a complete lineup like that from top to bottom is always fun."

The Pirates will start right-hander Charlie Morton (1-1, 1.74), who yielded three hits over 5 1-3 innings in Pittsburgh's 4-0 win at Cincinnati on Tuesday, his first victory in his second start since undergoing Tommy John surgery over a year ago.

"For him, second time back in the major leagues after a year, go through five innings, get into the sixth inning against those guys, we were way good with that and we'll move on from there," manager Clint Hurdle told the team's official website.

Morton was a member of the Braves when he won his only start against the Angels on June 14, 2008, giving up three runs in six innings.

          • Preview: Rangers (43-32) at Cardinals (47-28)
            Game: 3
            Venue: Busch Stadium
            Date: June 23, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

While it won't erase the bitter memory of losing the 2011 World Series, a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals could help the Texas Rangers pad their lead atop the AL West

The Cardinals' Adam Wainwright will try to thwart the Rangers' attempt at a season-high fifth straight victory by becoming the NL's first 11-game winner Sunday night.

In its first trip to Busch Stadium since blowing Games 6 and 7 of the 2011 World Series, Texas (43-32) has handled St. Louis so far, rallying for a 6-4 win Friday and taking control early in a 4-2 victory Saturday. Nelson Cruz and A.J. Pierzynski homered in the first three innings, and the Cardinals (47-28) registered only four singles in the final seven frames.

The Rangers' fifth win in six contests coupled with an Oakland loss in Seattle pushed Texas percentage points ahead of the Athletics in the division. The Rangers trailed Oakland by three games after losing for a sixth straight time last Sunday.

The Rangers have cut their deficit in part by scoring 33 runs in their last six games, including three wins against the A's earlier this week. They plated 39 during a 4-11 start to this month.

"We're just taking a lot of energy and a lot of intensity into each game," outfielder David Murphy told the team's website. "Obviously, we're swinging the bat better and pitching well, things are going better. We're in a good place and we need to focus on staying here as long as we can."

Texas has the difficult task of keeping that momentum going against Wainwright (10-4, 2.37 ERA), who had a streak of five consecutive winning starts snapped in his most recent outing.

The right-hander suffered a 4-2 loss to the lowly Chicago Cubs on Tuesday by giving up four runs in seven innings. He had a 1.64 ERA during his season-best win streak.

"If they had a happy zone, I found it," Wainwright said. "I threw it in the worst possible spot every time."

Wainwright missed the chance to pitch in the 2011 World Series after undergoing Tommy John surgery before the season and has never faced Texas.

He'll try to join Detroit's Max Scherzer as the only 11-game winners in the majors. Wainwright will also try to help spoil the struggling Nick Tepesch's first start in his home state.

The rookie right-hander is 0-2 with a 9.77 ERA in his last three starts and matched a career worst by allowing six runs in his 3 2-3 innings against Oakland on Monday. The Kansas City native and former University of Missouri player, though, avoided his fourth straight loss when the Rangers rallied for an 8-7 victory.

Teams are batting .168 against Tepesch (3-6, 4.84) in their first time through the lineup but .260 in their second look and .397 in their third.

"He's got to figure out what he's doing early to get outs and do it late," manager Ron Washington told the team's website. "Right now, he's getting challenged."

Tepesch will try to pull out of his funk while giving Texas its longest win streak since June 26-30.

            • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Thad Novak of BleacherReport.com listed his top six prep schools, as far as developing playing for Division I college basketball........

              6) Notre Dame Prep (MA)-- Recent players include Khem Birch, Stephen Adams, Michael Beasley

              5) Hargrave Military Academy (VA)-- Sam Young, Dee Bost, James Thomas.

              4) Brewster (NH)-- Will Barton, Thomas Robinson, Mitch McGary

              3) DeMatha (DC)-- Victor Oladipo, Adrian Dantley, Danny Ferry; still a force, but not as much as 20-30 years ago.

              2) Findlay Prep (NV)-- Michael Bennett, Dominick Artis, Tristan Thompson, not bad for a school that is five years old.

              1) Oak Hill (VA)-- Kevin Durant, Steve Blake, Brandon Jennings

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday...........

              13) NHL has the sports stage all to itself Monday night for Game 6 of the Finals; there are only four baseball games on Monday's schedule.

              12) Which team scored in the most first innings this season? Surprise, its the Colorado Rockies, who have scored in 1st inning in 30 of 76 games.

              11) Unfortunate flooding in Calgary flooded the Saddledome up to the 10th row of seats on the arena floor; NHL's Flames have already ordered a whole new set of equipment-- their old stuff got ruined.

              10) San Diego Padres are 38-37, hanging in the NL West race despite their double play combination (Gyorko/Cabrera) both being on the DL.

              9) Rough night for San Diego's Edinson Volquez Saturday, throwing 50 balls, 58 strikes while walking seven Dodgers in a 6-1 home loss.

              8) Why did the Astros let Jed Lowrie go? He only makes $2.4M a year, he's a damn good hitter for a shortstop. You'd think they want some good players on their team. Good shortstops are hard to find.

              7) Giants lead the major leagues with eight walk-off wins; Marlins lead the big leagues, if thats the right word, with eight walkoff losses.

              6) Jacob Turner/Barry Zito both threw seven innings Saturday, but they got there in different ways; Turner only threw 83 pitches, Zito 112.

              5) St Louis Cardinals are 14-2 in game following their last 16 losses.

              4) Reds scored twice in top of 9th to grab a 3-2 lead in ninth inning, but gave up the lead and lost 4-3 at Arizona on Jason Kubel's two-run single.

              3) Odd Stat of the Day: San Diego Padres have had 470 players since they began play in 1969; 55 of them played in only one or two games.

              2) Who thought the Braves were going to Miller Park and getting shut out two days in a row? Home team is now 15-1 in Tim Hudson's starts.

              1) I don't want to say that Marlins' owner Jeffrey Luria is a jackass; actually, thats exactly what I want to say. On December 4, 2007, Miguel Cabrera was traded by the Marlins with Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers for Dallas Trahern, Burke Badenhop, Frankie de la Cruz, Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller and the world-fanous Mike Rabelo.

Who the hell trades a 25-year old Cabrera? A jackass does.

Blue Jays win 10th straight, continue to pay off bettors
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Toronto Blue Jays have been the most profitable bet in the bigs over the past 10 games.

Any $100 bettor would be up $1,106.04 if they wagered on each game of Toronto’s current 10-game winning streak. The Blue Birds have outscored the opposition 57-22 during the run.

The Blue Jays have been underdogs six times during the streak, including +216 pups against Yu Darvish and the Texas Rangers on June 13.

Toronto (37-36) is now at one game above .500 and is back in contention in the AL wild-card hunt.

The Blue Jays are suggested -160 favorites in the final game of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles Sunday.

The Blue Jays opened the 2013 campaign with 12-1 odds to win the World Series, but fell to 100-1 at the LVH SuperBook on Monday. Online sportsbook Bet365 has boosted Toronto’s futures all the way up to +1200 as of Saturday.

Sunday Night Baseball: Rangers at Cardinals
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at St. Louis Cardinals (-185, 7.5)

                        TEPID TEPESCH GOES FOR TEXAS

Nick Tepesch’s rookie season has been a little rough as the righty is 3-6 with a 4.84 ERA. He is in an awful stretch right now giving up 17 runs and 19 hits over his last three starts against Oakland, Cleveland, and Toronto. Tepesch has had three road starts where he has allowed two earned runs or less, but he’s also allowed four earned runs or more in three other starts. The Texas starter has shown good control walking just five batters in his last five starts.

                        WINS ARE WAINWRIGHT’S WAY

Adam Wainwright is 10-4 with a 2.37 ERA on the year for the Cardinals. He uncharacteristically gave up four runs last time out against the weak-hitting Cubs. Wainwright had previously allowed just three total earned runs over three starts. The righty made one previous interleague start this season giving up three runs and 12 hits in eight innings pitched against the Royals. Wainwright’s control has been impeccable, going walk-free in three of his last five starts. He didn’t walk anyone in his first four starts of the season.

                        INJURY REPORT

Both of these teams are dealing with injury problems. Right now, the Cardinals’ rotation is without Chris Carpenter, Jaime Garcia, and John Gast. Garcia is done for the year after suffering a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. Carpenter is dealing with a back ailment which is keeping him from returning after dealing with a nerve condition. Rafael Furcal and Jason Motte are done for the season due to Tommy John surgery.

Texas is missing a few pitchers as well. The rotation is without Alexi Ogando, Colby Lewis, Matt Harrison, and Neftali Feliz. Harrison and Feliz will be back around late-July or August. Joakim Soria is out of the Rangers' bullpen as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

                        TRENDS

*Rangers are 36-16 in their last 52 Sunday games.
*The under is 4-1-1 in Tepesch’s last six starts.
*Cardinals are 21-8 in Wainwright’s last 29 starts.
*The over is 7-2 in the Cardinals’ last nine Sunday games.

                        HITTERS TO WATCH

                        Lance Berkman 7-for-27 vs. Wainwright
                        Geovany Soto 5-for-23 vs. Wainwright

                        No Cardinals have faced Tepesch

Miami Marlins at San Francisco Giants (-203, 7)
