    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Former Central Michigan/Pitt hooper Trey Zeigler will finish his career at TCU; not many kids play for three different D-I programs.

-- Ivan Nova struck out the side on nine pitches in 8th inning Wednesday, only the 50th pitcher ever to do that.

-- Tuesday night was first time in Mariano Rivera's great career that he got the loss in a game where he didn't record an out.

-- Former Alabama backup QB Philip Ely is transferring to Toledo, where he'll have two years to play in the MAC, starting in 2014.

-- William Gates Jr is going to Furman to play hoop; his dad was co-star of Hoop Dreams, the 90's documentary about high school basketball.

-- Dioner Navarro homered three times Wednesday, the first Cub catcher to do that since the immortal George Mitterwald in 1974.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a warm spring day

    13) World Series of Poker started Wednesday, the first two of 62 events tipping off. Main Event starts July 6; I’ll be out there when the Main Event ends, maybe I’ll drive over to Rio and get on ESPN!!!

    12) Miami/Indiana split their last six games; during that time, Heat is 45-3 against the rest of the NBA.

    11) Steve Kerr basically dared the NBA to fine guys for flopping in Game 4 at Indiana Tuesday night, calling the game “….a flopfest.” All refs have to do is stop calling offensive fouls, and flopping will end, and quickly.

    10) Pacers are hurting Miami on the offensive boards, grabbing 39.9% of their misses; that’s either very good offensive rebounding, or bad rebounding by the defense. Or a little of both.

    9) Brewers SS Juan Segura went 6-7 Tuesday night, first MLB player with six hits in a game since Adrian Gonzalez four years ago.

    8) Former Oregon State PG Ahmad Starks transferred home to Illinois; he would like to play this year, and stunningly, he has a sick grandmother to use as an excuse to become eligible right away. Funny how that works.

    7) Colorado fired AD Mike Bohn, who had a contract that ran thru 2017; bad news for new football coach Mike MacIntyre, who came in from San Jose State. A coach never wants the AD that hired him to leave, especially before he ever coaches a game. The new AD just isn’t going to be as invested in a coach he didn’t hire.

    6) Colorado P Jorge de la Rosa has made 11 starts; Rockies scored exactly two runs in six of the 11 games, and won all five when they scored more.

    5) LA Kings’ forward Justin Williams is first NHL’er ever to scored a goal in his first four Game 7’s; odd thing is, those Game 7’s were played for three different teams over a 10-year span. Home team won all seven games in LA-San Jose series.

    4) Oakland’s starting pitching has gotten a lot better this month, which explains their recent hot streak; in his first seven starts this year, Jarrod Parker was 1-5, 7.60. In his last four starts, Parker is 2-1, 2.96.

If the A’s get to their bullpen with a lead in the 7th inning, they’re generally pretty strong- their starters had struggled finishing six innings in the first 5-6 weeks, but are doing it now.

    3) Here’s why Katin Reinhardt can't play point guard for Andy Enfield at USC; of the 148 dunks Enfield’s Florida Gulf Coast team had LY, PG Brett Comer assisted on 65 of them. You think Reinhardt is that good a playmaker? If he was, he would’ve played PG for UNLV, which desperately needed a playmaker like Comer.

    2) Our thoughts and prayers to Argentinian basketball legend Oscar Schmidt, one of the most prolific gunners in basketball history. I’m serious, he made Allen Iverson look like John Stockton, he shot the ball so often. He could’ve played in the ABA with Bo Lamar and Machine Gun Grant. Great fun to watch; we pray/hope he gets better soon.

    1) So the Internet and newspapers are going nuts about Amanda Bynes getting arrested over the weekend and I’m sitting there like, “Who the hell is Amanda Bynes? Seriously, I don’t know.”

Seems like some of these “celebrities” get in trouble on purpose just to keep their names in the news, otherwise, they’d become, you know, ordinary and in this day and age, that would be the biggest crime of all.

NFL Games of the Year: Early money on 49ers over Colts

Odds are out for the biggest and best games of the upcoming NFL season. Covers Expert Bryan Power gives you his insight into some of these marquee matchups and predicts where the odds could move before kickoff.

NFL Week 3: Indianapolis Colts at San Francisco 49ers (-9)

      Past history:
San Francisco 1-2 SU, 2-1 ATS, 2-1 Under (since ’01)

      Early look at the Colts:
The Colts shocked everyone last season by improving their win total a full nine games in Andrew Luck’s rookie year. Yet, at the same time a minus-30 point differential for an 11-5 football team is eye opening. They beat a lot of bad teams close and had a favorable home schedule. The whole Chuck Pagano situation was a wonderful inspirational story, but it remains to be seen just how good of a head coach he truly is. Bruce Arians is now in Arizona after winning Coach of the Year in Pagano’s absence. Everyone expects this team to take a step back in 2013, which is evident by the Colts’ win total being at 8.5 (with some 8's out there).

      Early look at the 49ers:
Even with the possible season-ending injury to WR Michael Crabtree, the 49ers will be at the top of the short list of Super Bowl contenders. They are favored to win a tough NFC West and despite coming in at the lowest odds to win the Super Bowl, they are currently drawing the most action. They are projected to finish with 11 or more wins depending on the book.

      Where this line will move:
This line has already been bet up from the opening number of -7.5, but where it moves from here will depend on how the 49ers perform in their first two games. They open the season by hosting Green Bay, then traveling to Seattle. The Seahawks game, which is on a Sunday night, will have particular impact depending on the result. There’s a good chance the Colts could be 2-0 coming in, as they open at home versus the Raiders and Dolphins. Don’t be surprised to see the action come in on the dog in this one.

Pacers at Heat: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-7.5, 185)

        Series is tied 2-2.

The Indiana Pacers made the necessary adjustments on the interior to keep LeBron James out of the paint and ended up evening the Eastern Conference finals at two games apiece. It will be the Miami Heat’s turn to make adjustments when they host Game 5 Thursday. After getting torched in the post by James and letting role players like Udonis Haslem and Chris Andersen beat them in Game 3, the Pacers tightened things in Game 4.

Roy Hibbert and David West were quick to help on James, who did not get a chance to settle into the paint and ended up fouling out with under a minute left and the Heat trailing Tuesday. The superstar was called for his fifth foul in the paint with 1:30 left and was then caught slightly moving on a screen 34 seconds later. “I didn‘t believe it was an offensive foul,” James said. “I was going to set a screen and I feel like I was stationary, and (Dwyane Wade) rejected the pick and roll and Lance (Stephenson) actually ran into me.” Indiana did not allow Miami to score the rest of the way.

        TV:
        8:30 p.m. ET, TNT

        ABOUT THE PACERS:
Indiana was outscored in the paint in Game 3 but built up a 50-32 advantage in that area in Game 4 while outrebounding the Heat 49-30. Roy Hibbert led the way with 23 points and 12 rebounds while anchoring the defense on the interior. “Not one guy in that locker room didn’t believe we were going to win this game,” Hibbert told reporters. “We showed fortitude and we picked each other up.” Stephenson took over some of the defensive responsibilities on James and added 20 points while attacking the paint. The Pacers let a nine-point lead slip away in the fourth quarter but recovered to control the final minutes. “We’ve shown a great deal of resolve all year,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. “This is the first time we’ve faced adversity this playoff season. Our guys rose to the challenge to start the game, and then when Miami came and took the lead, they rose to the challenge again.”

        ABOUT THE HEAT:
Indiana did exactly what it needed to do to beat Miami by controlling the interior and simply out-muscling the Heat in Game 4. James got little help from his supporting cast, as Wade looked hampered by his knee injury and Chris Bosh struggled to 1-for-6 from the floor. “In the playoffs, on the road, you’re up by three, handful of minutes to go,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. “Again, the way we are, we pride ourselves in closing out games, and we weren’t able to do it.” Wade was called for traveling in the final minute after James had fouled out and Bosh missed a 3-point attempt as the shot clock was winding down with the Heat up by two points and less than four minutes remaining. The Pacers got the rebound, tied it on the next possession and never looked back.

        TRENDS:

        * Pacers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
        * Heat are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 games following a S.U. loss.
        * Over is 5-0 in Pacers last 5 overall.
        * Over is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. The Heat have totaled 11 turnovers in the last two games.

        2. Hibbert has recorded at least 20 points and 10 rebounds five times in the playoffs. He reached those marks seven times total in the regular season.

        3. Miami went 37-4 at home during the regular season but has suffered two of its three playoff losses in its own building.

Good morning, kb! All the severe damage missed us up here around Grand Lake so we're doing great! How did you fare in the recent storm? I know the most damaged areas are close to you.

I came out all safe and sound. I'm up in the NW part of OKC. Man what a devestating storm. Those poor folks in Moore and especially all those poor kids at the school. Still praying for those affected. Going to take a while for them to recover.

Alright, kb! I'm very glad everything's okay at your house.

I'm still having a hard time grasping how complete the destruction was in Moore.

I've been very busy and haven't been able to do anything yet but send money and a little food. I think I can go help with the clean-up for 3 or 4 days week after next. I sure hope so, anyway.
