    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Wild rallies in both Boston/Toronto, as Indians/Orioles both gave up four runs in bottom of 9th and had bitter losses.

-- CC Sabathia has allowed 28 hits in his last 19.1 IP, and hasn't won in his last five starts.

-- Ike Davis, who somehow is still in the big leagues, got the game-winning hit as the Mets rallied to beat Atlanta 4-2.

-- Clay Buchholz has been scratched from Monday's start (collarbone); in his place, Alfredo Aceves gets the start.

-- Patrick Corbin is 8-0 for the Diamondbacks. Good young pitcher.

-- Thanks to the garbage guys for coming thru my neighborhood at 5:10am on a day off; luckily, I was still writing and not asleep yet.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend..........

    13) If I had my way, baseball would lose the DH; placate players' union by expanding big league rosters to 27 guys, just get rid of the DH. Union likes the DH because DH's generally make more money than the average player.

    12) Pretty big day in Indianapolis Sunday, with the Indy 500 and the Pacers' game; too bad Indiana forgot to play defense-- Miami had 70 points at the half, committing just one first half turnover.

    11) St Louis Cardinals are 14-3 this season in game following a loss.

    10) Redbirds won World Series two years ago; only nine of the 25 players from that team still play for St Louis.

    9) Cincinnati's Shin-Soo Choo has been hit by a pitch 13 times this season; thats what happens when you crowd the plate. He has been a very good leadoff man, with an OB% of .441 this season.

    8) If you had Phillies-Nationals under 6.5 Sunday, thats a bad beat, as game was 0-0 after 6.5 innings, before Nationals scored five times in bottom of 7th on their way to a 6-1 win. Cole Hamels is 1-8 this season.

    7) A's haven't had a position player make All-Star team since Ramon Hernandez did way back in 2003.

    6) Minnesota Twins have been outscored 52-21 in first inning this year.

    5) Memphis transfer Antonio Barton stays in-state, will play for the Tennessee Volunteers, where he could be an upgrade over the previous PG, Trae Golden.

    4) Memo to Oriole manager Buck Showalter; Do not bat JJ Hardy behind Chris Davis. Toronto walked Davis intentionally three times Sunday to get to Hardy, who responded with three outs. Not sure I've ever seen the same guy walked intentionally three times in one game, other than Barry Bonds, and Davis is certainly no Bonds.

    3) Last season the Buffalo Bills allowed 14.7 ppg in their six wins, 34.7 ppg in their ten losses.

    2) After 50 games, the Pittsburgh Pirates are 31-19; this is third year in row they've gotten off to a good start, but their rotation looks sturdier this time around. They might contend all season.

    1) Full slate of interleague play the next four days, with two-game series in all 30 cities. Interesting new twist on interleague play this season.

Spurs at Grizzlies: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Memphis Grizzlies (-2.5, 180.5)

      Spurs lead best-of-seven series 3-0.

The Memphis Grizzlies are in the deepest hole imaginable as they host the San Antonio Spurs in Monday’s Game 4 of the Western Conference finals. No team in NBA history has won a playoff series after losing the first three games so it will take a monumental occurrence for San Antonio to not reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2007. The Spurs have won the past two games in overtime.

San Antonio blew a 2-0 lead in last season’s West finals when losing to Oklahoma City and the players repeatedly expressed they were highly intent on not giving the Grizzlies any life. But Game 3 features the Spurs falling behind by 18 points in the opening quarter and never leading until the fourth quarter before dominating overtime in the 104-93 win. Memphis hadn’t lost at home in the postseason and will attempt to avoid back-to-back FedExForum defeats to keep the series alive. “It’s more than just basketball here,” point guard Mike Conley told reporters on Sunday. “We owe it to ourselves, owe it to the fans not to get swept and get embarrassed on our home court.”

      TV:
      9 p.m. ET, ESPN

      ABOUT THE SPURS:
Veteran power forward Tim Duncan denies he feels an urgency about returning to the NBA Finals due to his age but the 37-year-old sent out different signals with his stellar play in Game 3. Duncan scored seven of his 24 points in overtime and also had 10 rebounds and five assists in a tremendous performance that represented his 144th postseason double-double, second all-time behind Magic Johnson (157). “I’m not worried about how old I am or whatever, whatever it may be,” Duncan said. “I’m very focused on having another opportunity to make it to a championship (round) and try to win. That’s all.”

      ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES:
Memphis was sharp early in Game 3 and seemed fresher than the veteran Spurs after a three-day break. The role was reversed late in the game and in the overtime dominated by San Antonio. “I think in overtime we were just worn down,” Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins told reporters on Sunday. “Not that they’re not, it’s just we’re more worn down. We have to play hard … We leave it all on the court.” Memphis could have avoided overtime but Conley took a poor angle on a last-second driving shot in regulation and missed badly. Power forward Zach Randolph had 14 points and 15 rebounds after being a combined 7-of-26 shooting over the first two games.

      TRENDS:

      * Spurs are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.
      * Grizzlies are 6-0 ATS in their last six games following an ATS loss.
      * Over is 6-0 in Spurs’ last six Conference Finals games.
      * Over is 4-1 in Grizzlies’ last five overall.

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. San Antonio went 8-for-10 from the field in overtime in Game 3 while outscoring Memphis 18-7.

      2. This is the 108th time a team has possessed a 3-0 lead in an NBA postseason series.

      3. After having 18 assists in Game 2, Spurs PG Tony Parker had more turnovers (seven) than assists (five) in Game 3.

Blackhawks at Red Wings: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings (+116, 5)

        Detroit leads series 3-2.

The top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks took the first step toward making a comeback from a 3-1 deficit in their Western Conference second-round matchup with the seventh-seeded Detroit Red Wings. The Presidents' Trophy winners attempt to continue their climb and even the series when the Original Six rivals meet at Joe Louis Arena for Game 6 on Monday. Chicago posted a 4-1 victory in Game 1 before its offense went silent, scoring a total of two goals in three consecutive losses.

Detroit squandered a chance to advance to the conference final and gain some much-needed rest as it suffered its second 4-1 loss of the series in Game 5 on Saturday. Andrew Shaw scored a pair of goals and captain Jonathan Toews netted his first of the playoffs for the Blackhawks, who entered the third period leading by two but didn't let up as they outshot the Red Wings 17-4 in the session. The good news for the Red Wings is that defenseman Niklas Kronwall is expected to play after sitting out the second half of the third period on Saturday following a crushing check by Chicago's Bryan Bickell.

        TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

        ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS:
Toews feels as if a weight has been lifted off his shoulders now that he has that first playoff goal under his belt. The center had seven tallies in each of his first two postseasons but has scored only four times in 23 games over the last three playoff years. "It's just nice to see one go in," Toews said. "You work so hard for so many games, not only for yourself but your linemates, the guys that are out there with you. It builds your confidence." Although Chicago entered the playoffs as the favorite in the West to reach the Stanley Cup final, Shaw believes the Blackhawks now are playing with house money. "The pressure's on (the Red Wings) to eliminate us; they have our backs against the wall," he said. "Everyone thinks that Detroit's going to take the series. The pressure's off us." Bickell scored the first goal of the game on Saturday, firing the puck into the net so hard, it broke the goal cam. "Hopefully, I don't get billed for it," he joked.

        ABOUT THE RED WINGS:
Kronwall sacrificed his own body to save teammate Henrik Zetterberg, who would have been targeted by Bickell had the defenseman passed the puck to the captain a few seconds earlier. "I saw (Bickell) coming. I just tried to hold on to the puck as long as I could before I gave it to Hank, so that guy couldn't jump Hank," Kronwall told the Detroit News. Despite allowing four goals, Jimmy Howard was Detroit's best player in Game 5 as he turned aside 41 shots. Howard knows his team needs to put forth a better effort in order to avoid a seventh game in Chicago. "They were better than us (Saturday)," Howard told the News. "(Game 6) is in our building, we better be fired up to play." Dan Cleary, who scored the lone goal for the Red Wings, agreed. "We have to be ready to go Monday night as if our backs are against the wall," he said. "Which I like to think they are."

        TRENDS:

        * Home team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
        * Under is 19-5-4 in the last 28 meetings.
        * Under is 15-5-1 in the last 21 meetings in Detroit.
        * Blackhawks are 9-3 in the last 12 meetings in Detroit.
        * Blackhawks are 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.

        OVERTIME:

        1. Chicago was 4-for-4 on the penalty kill Saturday and is 35-for-36 overall this postseason.

        2. The Red Wings have won eight consecutive home playoff games against the Blackhawks.

        3. Detroit has outscored Chicago 11-10 through five contests despite being outshot 175-134.

NHL Eastern Conference Final preview: Penguins vs. Bruins
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins only needed five games to take care of their respective second-round opponents and will now square off in the Eastern Conference Final that everyone wanted to see at the beginning of the lockout-shortened campaign.

Here’s a quick breakdown of their upcoming series:

No. 1 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. No. 4 Boston Bruins

        Season series:
        Penguins won 3-0 SU, 0-3 over/under

        Series prices:
        Penguins -200, Bruins +160

Why bet the Penguins: The Penguins have taken the past six regular-season meetings between the two teams and have won six straight games in Boston. Pittsburgh is only allowing only 2.5 goals per game and has been even stingier since Tomas Vokoun took the starting job from Marc-Andre Fleury in Round 1. The veteran netminder is 6-1 with a 1.85 GAA and .941 save percentage since seizing control in between the pipes. The Pens have been absolutely deadly on the power play, scoring 13 goals with the man advantage in 11 games while leading the playoffs in power-play efficiency (28.3 percent). Pittsburgh is 7-4 over/under in the playoffs to date – the best over bet of the remaining teams.

Why bet the Bruins: The Bruins have looked like a well-oiled machine since their thrilling Game 7 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the opening round. Forward David Krejci leads all scorers with 17 points in the postseason, but what has really been surprising in Boston is the performance of three rookies on the back end. Torey Krug, Matt Bartkowski and Dougie Hamilton filled in admirably for injured regulars on the blue line and helped the Bruins take four of five from the New York Rangers. Boston has allowed only 28 goals in a dozen playoff outings, and Tuukka Rask boasts a stellar .928 save percentage.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB's best and worst Memorial Day bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Memorial Day schedule features 16 MLB games – 10 of those getting underway in the afternoon. We take a look back over the past 10 years and see which major league clubs are the best and worst bets on the holiday Monday:

Most profitable – Cincinnati Reds (6-2 for +5.61 units on Memorial Day since 2003)

The Reds have made the most green for MLB bettors on Memorial Day and just so happen to be hosting the Indians - on off the worst teams on the holiday - this Monday.

Most costly – Houston Astros (1-6 for -6.16 units on Memorial Day since 2003)

Honestly, if you’ve been betting the Astros on the holiday each year, you need to cut back on that suitcase of Memorial Day beers. Houston hosts Colorado this year.

Best record – Toronto Blue Jays/Miami Marlins (6-3 on Memorial Day since 2003)

Funny enough, one of best teams on Memorial Day lives north of the border, where they don’t celebrate the final Monday in May. The other happens to be one of the worst teams in baseball this season. The Marlins visit Tampa Bay in a Sunshine State showdown Monday.

Worst record – Kansas City Royals/Cleveland Indians/Houston Astros (1-6 on Memorial Day since 2003)

Not a big surprise here, with the Royals, Tribe and Astros being among baseball’s bottom feeders for some time now. However, there could be value in going against K.C. and Cleveland since they turned the corner.

Best home record – Toronto Blue Jays (6-0 at home on Memorial Day since 2003)

With Memorial Day just another Monday north of the border, perhaps the Jays don’t feel the pressure to excel in front of their home fans. Toronto hosts Atlanta Monday.

Worst home record – Kansas City Royals (0-4 at home on Memorial Day since 2003)

The Royals have ruined more than a few Memorial Day memories for their loyal backers and host the Cardinals on the holiday Monday this year.

Best road record – Chicago White Sox (4-2 on the road on Memorial Day since 2003)

The ChiSox have a 5-2 overall record for +4.21 units on Memorial Day, many of those units coming courtesy of beefy road lines. The Southsiders host the Northsiders – the Chicago Cubs – Monday.

Worst road record – Cleveland Indians (0-4 on the road on Memorial Day since 2003)

The Tribe are hoping to turn around their road luck on the holiday this year. Cleveland, which has cooled off a bit, is visiting Cincinnati Monday.

Best over – Chicago White Sox (7-0 over/under on Memorial Day since 2003)

The White Sox not only kick butt on the road on Memorial Day but keep the crowds happy with some high-scoring games. They host the Cubs, who are 3-5 over/under on the holiday.

Best under – Seattle Mariners (2-5 over/under on Memorial Day since 2003)

The Mariners have kept scores low on Memorial Day and bring the 26th ranked offense in Monday’s game with San Diego, which is 3-4 over/under on the holiday Monday since 2003.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Memorial Day betting: Best and worst daytime MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 10 day games on the Memorial Day MLB slate. We take a look at the teams with the three best and worst day records playing Monday afternoon in an attempt to give you a handicapping edge.

                    Best day records

                    Cincinnati Reds (15-9)

The Reds have won five of their last six games and will host the Cleveland Indians Monday. Cincinnati has scored a MLB-best 125 runs in 24 daytime affairs (5.2 runs per game).

                    Pittsburgh Pirates (12-7)

The Pirates are playing some solid baseball lately and tend to tear the cover off the ball during day games. Pittsburgh hitters have launched 25 home runs in the club’s 19 matinees, but they may be limited by Justin Verlander and the Tigers on holiday Monday.

                    St. Louis Cardinals (12-8)

The Cardinals have driven in 97 runs under the sun – the fourth-best mark in the bigs. However, St. Louis will run into the big arm of the Royals’ James Shields on Monday.

                    Worst day records

                    Houston Astros (2-10)

The Astros are wretched regardess of what time they play and it should be no surprise that they're fade material. Houston pitchers have a lofty 5.87 ERA in the afternoon to date and they’ll square off with the big bats of the Colorado Rockies next.

                    Miami Marlins (3-12)

I bet you could have guessed the Marlins would follow the Astros in this category. Miami batters average just 3.3 runs per game during early games and have a tough matchup in Tampa Bay looming.

                    Milwaukee Brewers (5-12)

Wily Peralta will have the task of lowering the pitching staff’s daytime 5.22 ERA against the lowly Twins Monday. But he will be opposed by Kevin Correia, who has a team-high four wins for Minnesota.
