    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Pacers’ coach Frank Vogel has taken a lot of grief the last three days; here’s six things I didn’t know about the Indiana coach:

-- He grew up on the Jersey Shore, went to Wildwood HS. He’ll be 40 years old next month.

-- When he was in 8th grade, he appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, because he could spin a basketball on a toothbrush while he brushed his teeth. Seriously.

    – Vogel played D-III college hoops at Juniata (Pa) for three years, then transferred for his senior year to become a student manager at Kentucky, to further his coaching career.

    – He went to the Celtics as the video coordinator for Rick Pitino, who had been at Kentucky.

    – He spent two years as an NBA advance scout (Lakers/Wizards), then hooked up as an assistant coach under former Pitino aide Jim O’Brien with the Pacers.

    – Before being named head coach of the Pacers January 30, 2011, he had never been the head coach of any team.

    *****

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

    13) Tremendous win by the Pacers Friday in Miami, evening series 1-1 and grabbing the home court advantage as the series goes back to Indiana. Lot of mental toughness for the Pacers when they were down 88-84.

    12) Big homer by Chris Young in front of friends/family in Houston, as Oakland scored three times in the ninth inning to beat the Astros 6-5.

    11) Braves-Mets was suspended after eight innings, tied 5-5; game will be resumed at 6:10 Saturday night.

    10) Pat Riley calls it “The Disease of Me”, when a team wins title(s), then struggles because everyone wants to take credit for the successes; seems like that’s what happened with the Red Sox, when the team stupidly canned Terry Francona because of a lateseason collapse in 2011.

Now Francona is writing another success story in Cleveland, when he should have a statue of himself standing outside Fenway Park. Francona ended The Curse of the Bambino; will there now be a Curse of Tito?

    9) New Jersey governor Chris Christie reports that 80% of the Jersey Shore has been rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy wrecked it last fall. Lot of people spend their summer vacations on the shore.

    8) If I was a TV network that showed NBA games, I’d think about signing Phil Jackson as a studio analyst, even if it meant he did reports from his home in Montana. Seems like the ol’ coach has a lot to say these days. Either that, or he’s just trying to sell copies of his new book.

    7) Rams signed a free agent defensive lineman from Ole Miss named Terrell Brown who is 6-10, 403, almost as big as the late Andre the Giant; they moved Brown to offensive right tackle and might use him to try and block some field goals this fall.

    6) Pirate pitcher Jason Grilli’s dad Steve pitched in the majors in late 70’s/ early 80’s; he was the losing pitcher in a 33-inning AAA game when he was playing for the Syracuse Chiefs in 1981, the longest pro baseball game ever played.

    5) Heading into Friday’s play, batters who had come to the plate with the most men on base: Brandon Phillips 166, Prince Fielder/Miguel Cabrera 15, Jay Bruce 155.

    4) Batters (minimum 100 PA) who knocked in the highest %age of baserunners in their AB’s: Ryan Zimmerman 26.3%, Freddie Freeman 26.1%, David Ortiz 25.3%.

    3) Nick Punto has driven in six of seven runners from 3B, best %age in MLB; Freeman has knocked in 15 of 20. Zimmerman has knocked in nine of 21 runners from 2B (42.9%) best %age in MLB, Travis Snider has knocked in five of 14 (35.7%) from first base, which leads MLB.

    2) Miguel Cabrera is first major leaguer with 55+ RBI in his team’s first 45 games since Manny Ramirez in 2001.

    1) Pac-12/DirecTV standoff is still going on; would like that resolved this summer, so I can see some more late night ball this season. Only reason I get DirecTV is for the NFL Sunday Ticket—if I have three soccer channels, you’d think they’d find a way to show Pac-12 stuff, which college football/ basketball fans want to see.

      NASCAR betting: Coca-Cola 600 preview

The Charlotte Motor Speedway will play host to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for the second consecutive week on Sunday with the running of the longest event of the season, the Coca-Cola 600.

      Here’s our betting preview:

      Favorite: Jimmie Johnson (+600)

Johhson is fresh off winning the NASCAR all-star event and in 23 career starts at Charlotte Motor Speedway, he has six wins, 11 top-fives, 15 top-10s and three poles. Johnson ranks first out of 52 drivers with an average place of 7.9 over the past eight years at Charlotte.

      Live dog: Kevin Harvick (+1600)

Harvick has one win, two top-fives and seven top-10s in 24 starts at CMS. Harvick finished eighth in the event last season, his fourth straight top-10 at the track.

      Long shot: Joey Logano (+3400)

Logano has the best average finish of any active driver (besides Johnson) at Charlotte (10.1). He has posted six top-10 finishes in eight starts at Charlotte.

      Key stat:
The longest race of the season allows ample time for drivers to make a move to the top from way back in the pack. The furthest back a driver has started and won a Sprint Cup race at Charlotte is 37th, accomplished by Johnson in 2003.

      Notable quotable:

"Man, the Coca-Cola 600 is a long race. For drivers, our bodies have adapted to running 400 or 500-mile events. This event is unique not only because we have to mentally prepare ourselves for that extra 100 miles, but the team also has to set the car up to go from day to night. It's a challenging race and a lot can change or happen. We were fortunate to win this race in 2011 and it came down to the last lap and fuel mileage, so you just never know how things are going to play out." Kevin Harvick

Odds to win the Coca-Cola 600 courtesy of UWIN:

      Jimmie Johnson +600
      Kyle Busch +600
      Matt Kenseth +600

Indianapolis 500 driver chooses winning over sex

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves is in hot water with his girlfriend after making a bold statement ahead of the 97th running of the event this Sunday.

The legendary driver was asked if he would give up sex for an entire year in exchange for a coveted fourth Indianapolis 500 title this weekend during a recent radio interview and replied, “I would not give up Indy, my friend, I’ll tell you that. I think I can handle one year without sex, because Indy is Indy.”

Castroneves is a 7/1 co-favorite along with Scott Dixon, Marco Andretti and Ed Carpenter.

Spurs at Grizzlies: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Memphis Grizzlies (-5.5, 177.5)

          Spurs lead best-of-seven series 2-0.

The Memphis Grizzlies are in must-win mode as the Western Conference finals move to the FedExForum for Saturday’s Game 3 against the visiting San Antonio Spurs. The Grizzlies dug themselves out of a 0-2 hole in their first-round series against the Los Angeles Clippers and will need to do so again with San Antonio winning two on its homecourt. The Spurs had a 2-0 lead in last season’s West finals before losing four straight to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Memphis put together a late charge before succumbing 93-89 in overtime in Tuesday’s Game 2. The Grizzlies trailed by 18 points with 14 minutes remaining before rallying to force the extra session but were unable to even the series. “We’re down 0-2,” Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. “We’ve got to go home and take care of business at home. It’s not going to be easy, but that’s where we are.” Spurs point guard Tony Parker set a personal playoff-best with 18 assists in Game 2 but isn’t relaxing over the 2-0 edge. “We understand that we didn’t do anything,” Parker said. “We just protected home court and we have a long way to go because we know we’re playing a very good team.”

          TV:
          9 p.m. ET, ESPN

          ABOUT THE SPURS:
Parker also had 15 points and three steals while bettering his previous personal-best for playoff assists by four. He has been playing with a painful left calf injury suffered in the second-round series against the Golden State Warriors and underwent an MRI exam on Thursday. The results displayed the calf contusion is dissipating and the three-day break without a game also should help Parker be more spry for Game 3. He is averaging 17.5 points and 13.5 assists in the series. Guard Danny Green has been stellar from long range and is 9-for-14 from behind the arc over San Antonio’s last three playoff games, while power forward Tim Duncan has blocked six shots despite shooting 9-for-23 from the field over the first two games.

          ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES:
Power forward Zach Randolph finally got his game going in the second half of Game 2. He had just four points on 2-of-18 shooting over the first six quarters of the series before finding room to operate during Memphis’ second-half comeback. Randolph finished with 15 points and 18 rebounds – including seven on the offensive boards – and center Marc Gasol also had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The Grizzlies need their star post players to find their shooting touch – Gasol is 11-for-28 from the field and Randolph is 7-for-26.

          TRENDS:

          * Spurs are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games.
          * Grizzlies are 6-0 ATS in their last six home games.
          * Over is 5-0 in Spurs’ last five Conference Finals games.

          BUZZER BEATERS

          1. San Antonio has made 23 3-pointers in the series – including a franchise postseason-record 14 in Game 1.

          2. The Grizzlies outrebounded the Spurs 60-46 in Game 2, led by a 19-4 edge on the offensive glass.

          3. Spurs G Manu Ginobili failed to reach double digits in either of the first two games and has just one 20-point outing in San Antonio’s 12 playoff games.

Tuukka Rask tripped over his own skates in Game 4, opening the door for the New York Rangers in their Eastern Conference second-round series. Rask would like to end the threat and lift the fourth-seeded Boston Bruins into the conference finals when the teams reconvene at TD Garden on Saturday. Rask's gaffe gave sixth-seeded New York a lift before former Boston College star Chris Kreider scored 7:03 into overtime as the Rangers skated to a 4-3 triumph on Thursday.

While Rask didn't have much of a chance on the final tally, he did his best to keep the first one in perspective. "You can either cry about it - or laugh about it," Rask said on Friday. "I choose to have a sense of humor." With a 1-5 mark away from Madison Square Garden, New York is hardly laughing about its road record in the playoffs.

            TV:
5:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, TSN, RDS

            ABOUT THE RANGERS:
Brian Boyle scored the team's first power-play goal of the series and third of the postseason midway through the third period of Game 4. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh helped set up the tally and logged over 3 1/2 minutes of ice time with the man advantage. "I think he helped us (in Game 4) on the power play," New York coach John Tortorella said of McDonagh. "It's me. I (messed) that up not using him early enough and I should have." Veteran Brad Richards, who was a healthy scratch in Game 4, was missing from practice on Friday and will likely miss his second straight contest.

            ABOUT THE BRUINS:
Defenseman Torey Krug has provided a jolt to Boston's ailing power play. The defenseman has scored two of his team's three goals with the man advantage during the series while also scoring in three of the last four games overall. "I think that we're just not passing up those good opportunities," Krug said of the team's improving performance on the power play. "You'd see sometimes in the past we'd be passing the puck and we'd want to make that extra pass. But this time, we're shooting pucks, we're getting pucks to the net, and guys are taking away Henrik's (Lundqvist) ice."

            TRENDS:

            * Rangers are 1-5 in their last six road games.
            * Bruins are 0-7 in their last seven Saturday games.
            * Over is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings.

            OVERTIME

            1. Boston Ds Dennis Seidenberg and Wade Redden skated with the team during Friday's practice. Seidenberg is dealing with a lower-body injury while Redden has been sidelined with an undisclosed ailment.

            2. The Rangers are 6-1 in their last seven elimination games - including 3-0 in 2013.

            3. Should New York emerge victorious, Game 6 will be at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks (-197, 5)

Red Wings lead best-of-seven series 3-1.

The top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks had a glorious start to the lockout-shortened season, recording an NHL-record 24-game point streak. They look to avoid a disastrous ending to the campaign as they host the seventh-seeded Detroit Red Wings on Saturday in an attempt to stave off elimination from the their Western Conference second-round series. Chicago cruised to the second Presidents' Trophy in club history and made easy work of the eighth-seeded Minnesota Wild in the first round before opening the matchup against its Original Six rival with a 4-1 victory thanks to a three-goal third period.

Things have since taken a turn for the worse, as the Blackhawks enter Game 5 in the midst of their first three-game slide of 2013. Chicago has scored a total of two goals in the three losses, with Patrick Kane recording both. Detroit pushed its Central Division rival to the brink of elimination Thursday, when Jimmy Howard made 28 saves for his second career playoff shutout and defenseman Jakub Kindl scored the first power-play goal allowed by the Blackhawks this postseason to snap a scoreless tie in the second period.

            TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS

            ABOUT THE RED WINGS:
After waiting until the final day of the regular season to qualify for the playoffs, Detroit is one victory away from advancing to the conference final for the first time since 2009, when it went on to lose to Pittsburgh in the second straight Stanley Cup final matchup between the clubs. Captain Henrik Zetterberg is not surprised the team is in such a position, even though it finished seventh in the West. "We don't really look at where we finished in the regular season," he told the Detroit Free Press. "It's a new season. You can't really care what you did in the regular season." While Chicago has been strong on the penalty kill, Detroit has been no slouch in that department as the Blackhawks are just 1-for-12 with the man advantage. "We've gotten better," said defenseman Jonathan Ericsson, whose team allowed seven power-play goals in its first-round series against Anaheim. "They're not getting as much and the puck seems to stay on the boards and doesn't come into (Howard) as much."

            ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS:
With the exception of Kane, Chicago's top players need to raise their game in order to keep the season alive. Topping the list is captain Jonathan Toews, who has yet to score a goal this postseason and let that frustration get the better of him in Game 4. Toews, who committed only 11 minor penalties during the regular season, was called for three in a span of just over 5 1/2 minutes in the middle period, with the second infraction leading to Kindl's power-play goal. "It's in the heat of the moment," said Toews, who was called for two high-sticking penalties and one for hooking. "I've got to be careful of my stick. That doesn't help my team." Defenseman Brent Seabrook refused to put any blame on Toews for the dire situation the team is in. "I think we all take the burden," Seabrook said. "We all win as a group, we lose as a group. Just because one guy's not scoring doesn't mean he's going to win the game or lose the game for us."

            TRENDS:

            * Red Wings are 1-4 in the last five meetings in Chicago.
            * Home team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
            * Under is 8-2-6 in Red Wings’ last 16 road games.

            OVERTIME

            1. After allowing five goals in the first two games of the series, Howard has stopped 86-of-88 shots over the last three contests.

            2. Chicago's Joel Quenneville is one loss away from falling to 0-6 as a coach in playoff series against Detroit.

            3. The Blackhawks were a perfect 30-for-30 on the penalty kill before Kindl's goal.
