    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Why wasn't Roy Hibbert in at the end? Why was Lebron covered by one guy? For a team that plays great defense, these are unfathomable errors in a game the Indiana Pacers should've won.

-- Alain Vigneault was fired by the Canucks; he had a 313-170-57 record over seven seasons in Vancouver, and a 33-32 record in the playoffs, but a first round exit in the playoffs this month sealed his demise. .

-- Ike Davis is batting .147 and playing lousy defense; why is he in the big leagues? This has to be an owner-driven decision; no one who makes their living evaluating personnel could be this stupid/stubborn.

-- North Carolina landed Theo Pinson, ESPN.com's #13 player in the Class of 2014; Indiana was also trying hard to get the Greensboro native.

-- Thank the Lord Mike Krzyzewski is coming back to coach the Olympic basketball team in 2016, since that means Jim Boeheim will also sign on as a freeloadeder/assistant coach. Without Boeheim's tactical expertise, how would we beat Angola and Belgium?

-- Seriously, how do you take Roy Hibbert out of the game when you are up by a point with 0:02.2 left?

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

    13) Big East basketball named Albany’s John Cahill as its supervisor of officials; he’s a good man, once ran for DA of Albany County. Big job in the first year of the new league- he’s one of the best officials in the country.

    12) Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets had a 19.9% chance of getting the #1 pick in the draft, instead got the #4 pick, which may not be as bad a break as it usually would be. No real clear cut #1 pick this year, with Nerlens Noel out until Christmas with his knee injury.

    11) Cleveland Cavaliers have the #1 pick, then three more in the top 33; will be interesting to see if all four picks make their roster, or if they make trades or select a foreign player for the future.

    10) I think Georgetown’s Otto Porter will be a very good NBA player; think he’s been prepared properly, and has excellent fundamental skills.

    9) Washington’s Adam LaRoche is a pretty good hitter, but he’s faced San Francisco’s lefty reliever Javier Lopez eight times, and struck out seven of them. Wednesday's flyout was his first fair ball against Lopez.

    8) Astros’ 2B Jose Altuve dumped agent Scott Boras, who lost Robinson Cano as a client earlier this season. Boras’ family will still be able to eat and all, but losing clients isn’t a trend he’d like to see last very long.

    7) ESPN just spent $77M on rights to the US Tennis Open for 11 years, but then they cut 250 staffers, mostly in their digital operations. It had been a while since ESPN laid people off.

    6) They had 12 inches (a foot!!!) of rain in Bahamas Tuesday. Wow.

    5) Baseball is cool because games take all different forms; there was a 17-inning game in the California League this week, where a SS pitched the last two innings, then hit a walk-off home run to win the game.

    4) There was a 17-inning game in the SEC tournament, with Miss State beating Missouri; I’m a little surprised college baseball doesn’t get more play on TV, but it doesn’t until the NCAA tournament starts, which is next week, by the way. Extra inning baseball games are excellent.

    3) Atlanta’s Evan Gattis has four home runs this year that tied the game or put the Braves ahead in the 8th inning or later; no one else in major leagues has more than two of those so far this season.

    2) There is a bar in Adelaide, Australia with an American theme called Jack Ruby’s; Ruby is the guy who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, after Oswald shot JFK in Dallas in 1963. Weird name for a bar.

    1) If you have a real need to know whether the roof at Miller Park is going to be open for a Brewers’ home game, call the Miller Park Roof Hotline, at 1-800-774-8587. Just thought you’d like to know.

Six of the hottest bets in sports

A pair of tennis masters and an NHL team with a penchant for late goals highlight some of the hotter plays in sports recently. Here is a quick look at some athletes and teams to consider going forward.

      (Odds courtesy of Bet365.com)

      Rafael Nadal

The Spanish tennis ace has won five titles on the ATP tour since coming back from a knee injury. Rafa heads into the French Open as the 4/7 favorite.

      Matt Moore

The Rays southpaw has made nine starts this season and the team has won all nine games. He is 8-0 with a 2.29 ERA on the year.

      Ottawa Senators last to score

The Senators have outscored their opponents by, get this, a tally of 16-1 in the third period and overtime during the playoffs. They have been the last team to score in six of their eight games in postseason.

      Bayern Munich

The Bavarian giants are 28-1-1 in their last 30 matches in all competitions. They are -133 to win the Champions League final against Bundesliga rival Borussia Dortmund Saturday.

      Serena Williams

Serena has won four straight titles and 24 straight matches heading into the French Open. The American is the favorite in the women's draw at +100.

      Cleveland Indians

Any $100 bettor would be up $1,538.42 if they'd bet the Tribe since April 28. Cleveland has won 18 of their 23 games since the second game of the double header on that date.

**All odds prior to events Wednesday May 22.

Three reasons why you should bet the WNBA

The WNBA opens its 17th season to thunderous applause this Friday. Well, maybe not thunderous. And, maybe not applause. More like a slow sarcastic clap.

Most often, the league serves as a better punchline than entertainment but like all sports – popular or not – a little wager can quickly make you a die-hard fan. And as ridiculed as the WNBA is, it has quietly become the secret weapon of sharp bettors each summer.

Due to the lack of exposure and coverage, plenty of WNBA news, trends and tidbits fall on deaf ears, which means those with their head to the women’s hardwood have a distinct advantage over the public and even the sportsbooks.

We asked some of Covers Experts’ sharpest minds – those that actually admit to betting on the WNBA – why they love the “Dub” and what they look for when handicapping lady hoops:

        Study pays off

“The sportsbooks delegate their resources to the sports that generate the most betting. WNBA lines are generally softer than you will find in, say, college and NBA basketball,” says a handicapper for Doc’s Sports. “As a result, someone that invests the time and effort into their research can have a strong advantage betting on a sport that is off most people's radar. The bottom line is that the cold, hard cash won betting on the WNBA is worth the same as money won betting on any other sport.”

        Lack of depth

“I essentially handicap the games same as I would any other sport, but find that because the public and oddsmakers aren't as up on it, that you can often find very advantageous lines,” says Covers Expert Bryan Power. “One key difference between it and most men's leagues is that there is a real lack of depth as far as talent goes, so the top two and three teams end up being much better than the rest of the field.”

        Value on the dogs

“I generally look to go against the public and stick mostly to underdogs and totals -usually unders,” says Covers Expert Sean Murphy. “That's where I've found the most value, particularly in the summer when a lot of recreational bettors and action junkies come out of the woodwork and pound the favorites. The lines certainly aren't as sharp as we're accustomed to seeing in the other major sports, at least in my opinion.”

Here’s a look at the WNBA futures heading into Friday’s season opener:

        Phoenix Mercury +325
        Minnesota Lynx +450
        Indiana Fever +550
        Connecticut Sun +650
        Los Angeles Sparks +800
        Chicago Sky +1000
        New York Liberty +1200
        San Antonio Silver Stars +1400
        Seattle Storm +1600
        Atlanta Dream +2000
        Tulsa Shock +2000
        Washington Mystics +3300

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Thursday, May 23

Chicago had won eight games in a row vs Detroit, but they've lost last two, scoring a single goal each game; under is 14-3-3 in last 20 series meetings. Blackhawks are 5-3 in playoffs this spring, but just 1-2 on road, while Red Wings are 6-4, with three OT wins-- they're 3-1 at home, with two wins in OT. Home teams are 11-3 in this round of playoffs; Detroit has more power plays than Chicago, but is 0-11 on power play, while Chicago is 1-10. Blackhawks are better team, but this is rivalry where Detroit generally has had the upper hand, so pressure on Chicago to win this game and avoid falling into huge hole. The team that won the President's Trophy (Chicago) has the pressure on them tonight.

Boston outshot Rangers 25-13 in periods 2-3 in Game 3, as fourth line scored the winning goal, underlining depth of Bruin team that was on life support nine days ago vs Toronto. No team has won consecutive playoff series when they were down 2-0 in both series; that is the Rangers' plight; they need win here to avoid sweep. Boston is still just 3-12 in last 15 visits to Manhattan (3-3 in last six); they had lost seven of nine to New York before this series started. Rangers won nine of their last ten home games, with all of their three home playoff wins by a goal. Bruins scored 3+ goals in six of its seven playoff wins this spring, 1-1-2 in its three losses. Under is 11-5-3 in last nineteen series games.

Home teams are 11-3 in this round of Stanley Cup playoffs; home teams won 13 of last 14 King-Shark games, with San Jose losing last four games here. LA allowed a total of 13 goals in winning six of last eight games, streak that started after they fell behind 2-0 in St Louis series. Under is 9-2-2 in LA's last thirteen games; defending champs are 4-4 vs San Jose this year, with home side winning all eight games. Sharks are 6-2 in playoffs, losing only first two games in this series; they've scored total of nine goals in four road playoff games. Kings are LLWWWWWWLL so far in playoffs, going 5-0 at home, but pressure is on them here, as San Jose has momentum and better playoff record this month.

Thursday's NHL playoff action: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings (-144, 4.5)

          Best-of-seven series tied at 2-2.

The sixth-seeded San Jose Sharks were one goal away from being in a 3-0 hole in their Western Conference second-round series. Thanks to Logan Couture, they have a chance to take a 3-2 lead when they visit the fifth-seeded Los Angeles Kings for Game 5 Thursday. San Jose dropped the first two games of its matchup with its Pacific Division rival on the road and found itself in overtime in Game 3 at home Saturday.

Couture helped the Sharks avoid the nearly insurmountable series deficit by scoring a power-play goal at 1:29 of the extra session. The center came up big again in Game 4 Tuesday, deflecting defenseman Dan Boyle's slap shot past Jonathan Quick during a man advantage at 3:55 of the second period to give San Jose a 2-0 lead. The tally, Couture's fifth of the postseason to tie him with Patrick Marleau for the team lead, proved to be the game-winner as Los Angeles' Mike Richards converted a power-play opportunity midway through the third. The Kings have won 12 consecutive home games, including all five in the playoffs, while the Sharks are 2-2 on the road this postseason.

          TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS

          ABOUT THE SHARKS:
Joe Thornton was instrumental in giving San Jose an early lead in Game 4. The captain chased down a dump-in and outwitted Los Angeles' Slava Voynov to gain possession behind the net by lifting the defenseman's stick. After feeding Brent Burns for a shot that was blocked, Thornton regained control and made another pass to Burns, who converted at 6:09 of the first period. "He was really good in the first period," Boyle told the San Jose Mercury News. "I think that was our team's best period, and he was dominant out there in the first. There's only so much other teams can do against a guy like that when he's playing that way." The Sharks have rallied three times in their history to tie a playoff series after losing the first two contests, but they have been eliminated in six games on all three occasions.

          ABOUT THE KINGS:
Defenseman Matt Greene made his postseason debut Tuesday, registering one shot and blocking two in 14:08 of ice time. Greene had not played since suffering a lower-body injury against Detroit on April 24 and appeared in only five regular-season contests due to back surgery. "I'm just trying to get back up to speed with the guys," Greene told the Los Angeles Times. Captain Dustin Brown believes Greene already is there. "He was probably, I think, our most physical defenseman," Brown told the Times after Game 4. Greene tied Drew Doughty for the team lead among defensemen with four hits Tuesday. Los Angeles is 6-4 this postseason after going 16-4 en route to its first Stanley Cup championship last year.

          TRENDS:

          * Sharks are 3-12 in their last 15 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
          * Under is 9-2-2 in Kings last 13 overall.
          * Under is 6-1-3 in Sharks last 10 road games.
          * Sharks are 0-4 in the last 4 meetings in Los Angeles.

          OVERTIME:

          1. All five of Couture's goals this postseason have come on the power play, a category in which he leads the NHL. He also is tied with Voynov for the league lead with three game-winning tallies.

          2. The Kings were outshot 15-3 in the first period Tuesday and trailed 21-9 after 40 minutes before having a 14-2 advantage in the third session.

          3. Five of San Jose's six all-time playoff victories over Los Angeles have been one-goal decisions.

Boston Bruins at New York Rangers (-113, 5)

          Boston leads best-of-seven series 3-0.

After needing a historic comeback to win their first-round series, the fourth-seeded Boston Bruins can sweep the New York Rangers and advance to the Eastern Conference final with a victory at Madison Square Garden Thursday. Fourth-liner Daniel Paille set up defenseman Johnny Boychuk to tie Tuesday's contest before scoring the go-ahead goal with 3:31 remaining in the third period in Boston's 2-1 triumph in Game 3. Sixth-seeded New York has been hampered by a punchless power play, which is 0-for-10 in the series and 2-for-38 in the playoffs.

While a 3-0 series lead is certainly advantageous, Boston can attest that it's not a death sentence. After dominating the first three contests of their 2010 second-round series with Philadelphia, the Bruins unceremoniously dropped the final four games to write an ugly chapter in the team's history. "You learn from the past, but you live in the moment. You don't live in the past," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "So right now, we're living in the moment and I like where our team is."

          TV:
7 p.m. ET, CNBC, TSN, RDS

          ABOUT THE BRUINS:
Boychuk has scored in back-to-back contests to double his playoff total. That's not too shabby considering the defenseman registered just one goal in 44 games during the regular season. Speaking of blue-liners, Dennis Seidenberg skated during the team's optional practice Wednesday while Andrew Ference remained off the ice. Both are dealing with lower-body injuries while fellow defenseman Wade Redden - who skated Wednesday - is nursing an undisclosed ailment.

          ABOUT THE RANGERS:
New York was doing its best to look at the smaller picture when addressing its situation. "It's a tall task, but you can't look at the big picture," defenseman Ryan McDonagh said of the team's 0-3 hole. Adding to the Rangers' problems is the expected loss of fellow blue-liner Anton Stralman, who isn't likely to play in Game 4 after he absorbed a brutal hit from Milan Lucic Tuesday. "Losing Stralsy is a big blow," coach John Tortorella said. "To a defense that is lacking a little depth right now, it hurts us. ... We're down 0-3, (but) there's no sense in feeling pressure."

          TRENDS:

          * Rangers are 9-1 in their last 10 home games.
          * Bruins are 4-0 in their last 4 overall.
          * Under is 5-1 in Rangers last 6 vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
          * Bruins are 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.

          OVERTIME:

          1. New York is trying to avoid being swept in a series for the first time since its 2006 first-round loss to New Jersey.

          2. The Bruins have received 11 goals in the playoffs from their blue-liners.

          3. Rangers RWs Darroll Powe and Arron Asham played with Philadelphia during that fateful 2010 series against Boston.
