    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Some interesting pointspreads for NFL games this season:

-- Week 3: Kansas City Chiefs at Philadelphia Eagles (-3)

-- Week 4: Pittsburgh Steelers (-1.5) vs Minnesota Vikings (@ London)

-- Week 10: Denver Broncos (-3) at San Diego Chargers

-- Week 12: San Francisco 49ers (-1.5) at Washington Redskins

-- Week 15: New England Patriots (-2) at Miami Dolphins

-- Week 16: New Jersey Giants at Detroit Lions (-1.5)

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend...........

    13) We did some research this week, and posted a table on our baseball page about how many times each team scores in the first inning, home and away. Its under the daily baseball info-- hope it helps you.

    12) Orioles lead major leagues, scoring in the 1st inning in 18 of 43 games; Mets/A's are worst, scoring in 1st inning in only nine games.

    11) '02 Pirates were last team to start season 13-13 in save opportunities; Rangers got there last night.

    10) In their first 41 games, seven different Mets have batted leadoff.

    9) Indians got their seventh shutout of the season Sunday; they had six all of last season. Tribe has now won 17 of its last 21 games.

    8) For those of us who care about such things, over is 30-25 in interleague play so far this season.

    7) You could hear a conversation between shortstop and runner on second base in ninth inning of Tiger-Ranger game last night; where was the mike? In the base? On the ump? On one of the players?

    6) In 1976, Frank Sinatra got an honorary degree from UNLV; Sunday, Las Vegas native/comedian Jimmy Kimmel got one.

    5) Over the last 25 years, 16 QBs have won the Heisman Trophy. Only one has won a NFL playoff game: Tim Tebow.

    4) Good grief; Pat Boone was once a big star, a singer who was famous for wearing white shoes; he had 38 top 40 hits, appeared in 12 movies. Now he's doing commercials on latenight TV for walk-in bathtubs. Yikes.

    3) Seven weeks into baseball season, and my fantasy team adds a catcher who has one walk, 35 strikeouts this year. The Wellington Castillo era will be interesting; he swung at a 3-2 pitch Sunday that was two feet outside.

You don't want your fantasy guys playing on teams that platoon; John Jaso getting traded to the A's from Seattle hurt his production bigtime.

    2) Miguel Cabrera swatted three home runs Sunday, but the Tigers lost 11-8 to the Rangers, and dropped three of four games in Arlington.

    1) If the baseball playoffs started Monday, they'd look like this:
AL: Bronx-Cleveland-Texas. Wild Card: Red Sox-Tigers
    NL: Atlanta-St Louis-Arizona. Wild Card: Pirates-Reds

NBA Eastern Conference finals preview: Heat vs. Pacers

The Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers duke it out in the Eastern Conference championship with a ticket to the NBA Finals on the line.

Here’s a look at how these teams stack up and their odds to win the series heading into Game 1 Wednesday:

No. 1 Miami Heat vs. No. 3 Indiana Pacers

      Season series: Pacers 2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS, 2-1 over/under
Series prices: Heat -700, Pacers +500

      Why bet the Heat:
Miami has victories in 45 of its last 48 games and an 8-1 record this postseason, with seven of those wins by double figures. Dwyane Wade will have had a week off to rest his ailing knee before Game 1 Wednesday, and Chris Bosh is playing some of the best basketball of his career. Bosh had nearly three times as many blocks as Chicago big man Joakim Noah (11 to 4) in the last round and held his own in the rebounding department against the much bigger Noah. Bosh appears poised to handle the Pacers’ intimidating frontcourt of Roy Hibbert and David West and no Heat player was betting in the clutch than CB4 this season. Bosh shot 77 percent from the field (24 for 31) in the final five minutes of games with a margin of five points or fewer this season.

      Why bet the Pacers:
The Pacers have a distinct size advantage over the Heat. Indiana has four players that are six-foot-nine or taller, while Miami has only two. The Pacers took two of three by double digits from the Heat during the regular season, outrebounding Miami by 11 boards per game over the three-game stretch. Indiana has been very impressive when it comes to defending the 3-point line. Opposing teams shot just 32.7 percent against the Pacers from beyond the arc this season – tops in the Association. The Pacers were one of two teams (Knicks were the other) to win their season series against Miami this year.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Monday, May 20

Chicago won eight of its last nine games with Detroit, winning five of six games this year by a total score of 19-10; under is 13-3-3 in last 19 series meetings. Blackhawks are 5-2 in playoffs this spring, but just 1-1 on road, while Red Wings are 5-4, with three OT wins-- they're 2-1 at home, with both wins in OT. Home teams are 9-1 in this round of playoffs, with five wins by 2+ goals. Detroit has had more power plays than Chicago, but is 0-7 on power play, while Blackhawks are 1-5. Red Wings outshot Chicago 19-14 in first period in this series; Blackhawks are better team, but this is rivalry where Detroit generally has had the upper hand, so pressure on Chicago to advance this time around.

Yankees at Orioles: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles (+130, 8.5)

The Baltimore Orioles face their first real adversity this season, losing the last five games at home including two in the ninth inning. The Orioles look to change their fortunes when they host the first-place New York Yankees on Monday to start a three-game series. Baltimore has dropped into a tie for third with Tampa Bay, four games behind the Yankees in the American League East. The Orioles went 1-2 last month at New York, which won 9 of 12 before being rained out Sunday.

Manny Machado and Adam Jones are among the league leaders in hits and Chris Davis is near the top in homers (12) and RBIs (40). But the Orioles’ starting pitchers have lasted more than six innings once in the last 10 games. Yankees slugger Robinson Cano is coming off a two-homer game Saturday and is batting .338 with 24 blasts in his career against Baltimore.

                  TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, YES (New York), MASN (Baltimore)

                  PITCHING MATCHUP:
Yankees LH CC Sabathia (4-3, 3.19 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Freddy Garcia (0-2, 5.51)

Sabathia was slated to pitch Sunday before the rainout, so he will take the mound against a team he has had a lot of success against. The veteran left-hander is 17-4 in 26 career starts against Baltimore with a 3.03 ERA. Sabathia has allowed three or fewer earned runs in seven of nine games in 2013, but has only one victory in his last five turns. He has surrendered eight homers in 59 1/3 innings.

Garcia has allowed four homers in 16 1/3 innings during his first three starts for the Orioles. The veteran right-hander, who owns a 152-103 career record, gave up two runs over 6 2/3 innings during his first outing before being touched up for eight in 9 2/3 frames his last two. Garcia is 5-4 in 12 starts with a 4.09 ERA against the Yankees. Travis Hafner is 15-for-33 with four home runs against him.

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is 16-for-16 in save opportunities, his second longest streak to start a season. He converted the first 28 chances in 2008.

                  2. Jones is 14-for-44 with three homers and 10 RBIs in his career against Sabathia.

                  3. The Yankees, off to their second best 43-game start in the last 15 years (27-16), are 18-0 when scoring the first run.

Blackhawks at Red Wings: What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings (+122, 5)

After an exhausting seven-game series against the Pacific Division champion Anaheim Ducks in the first round, the seventh-seeded Detroit Red Wings ran out of gas in the third period of the opener of their Western Conference second-round matchup against the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks. Detroit had a full tank on Saturday with a 4-1 triumph, and it attempts to take a 2-1 series lead when it hosts the Presidents' Trophy-winning Blackhawks in Game 3 on Monday. The Red Wings stayed even with Chicago in Game 1 before their Original Six rival scored twice in a span of less than 3 1/2 minutes midway through the third and went on to victory.

Detroit trailed after one period on Saturday before netting two goals in each of the next two sessions to even the series. The Red Wings, who waited until the final day of the regular season to extend their streak to 22 consecutive playoff appearances, have a chance to take a commanding lead in the matchup before heading back to the Windy City for Game 5 on Saturday. Detroit went 2-1 at home against Anaheim in the first round, while Chicago split its two games at Minnesota.

                          TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

                          ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS:
Viktor Stalberg apparently has gotten himself out of Joel Quenneville's doghouse as the coach said the right wing is "likely playing" on Monday. Stalberg was a healthy scratch for the first two games of the series after appearing in all five contests against Minnesota in the first round. "I thought he handled it well," Quenneville told the Chicago Tribune regarding Stalberg's benching. "He did what he had to do to keep himself ready." The speedy Stalberg claims he won't change a thing about his approach to the game. "I want to go out and play the same way I have all year," he told the Tribune. "Try to be hard and tough to play against and use my speed to create something out there." Patrick Sharp extended his point streak to six games with an assist in Game 2.

                          ABOUT THE RED WINGS:
Drew Miller returned from a broken finger Saturday and logged just over 12 minutes of ice time in his first game in nearly a month. "I felt good," he told the Detroit Free Press. "I think it's one of those things, you feel comfortable going out there and you can't play with caution, you've just got to go out and play your game." Defenseman Brendan Smith redeemed himself quite nicely in Game 2. After what many deemed a poor effort in the series opener, Smith had a rough start Saturday, making a mistake that led to Chicago's first-period goal. After Damien Brunner forged a tie, Smith beat Corey Crawford with 3:52 remaining in the second period for what proved to be the game-winning tally. "I really didn't think that I played as badly as some people thought (in Game 1)," Smith told the Free Press. The 24-year-old also received a vote of confidence from coach Mike Babcock, who said he thought Smith was "outstanding" on Saturday.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Blackhawks are 4-0 in the last four meetings in Detroit.
                          * Blackhawks are 8-1 in the last nine meetings.
                          * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Detroit.
                          * Under is 17-6-3 in the last 26 meetings.
                          * Road team is 15-7 in the last 22 meetings.

                          OVERTIME:

                          1. Chicago C Michal Handzus likely will be removed from the lineup to make room for Stalberg. Handzus, who has three assists in seven postseason games, sat out Sunday's practice even though Quenneville said he was "fine."

                          2. Detroit's victory in Game 2 ended its eight-game winless streak against its Central Division rival.

                          3. RW Patrick Kane scored the Blackhawks' lone goal Saturday. It was his first tally this postseason and second in his last 20 playoff games.
