    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Ottawa lost 4-3 at Pittsburgh; home teams are now 6-0 in second round of NHL playoffs.

-- Keegan Bradley followed his 60 on Thursday with a 69, leads by three shots at the Byron Nelson tournament in suburban Dallas.

-- Matt Harvey won 3-2 at Wrigley and knocked in winning run in his first win in his last five starts.

-- 17 of the last 19 Tampa Bay games went over the total, and with Price on the DL, they figure to play a lot more high scoring games.

-- Indians are 23-17, tied for first; Terry Francona for Manager of Year?

-- Astros/Marlins are both 11-31, but at least Houston has a plan; they will be a good franchise down the road. Jeffrey Luria is the worst owner in all of sports. Not sure why MLB allows him to be part of their group.

    Armadillo: DDLohaus handicaps the Preakness.........

Two weeks sure go by fast….and I bet the horses coming back after mixing it up over the Churchill Downs muck are wishing it went by slower….thus the rationale for my column.

We certainly got our money’s worth from Normandy Invasion in the Derby and his absence only strengthens my position; that race took a lot out of the horses that ran in it! Of the 20 horses entered only six are coming back this weekend in the 138th Preakness.

Orb ran a great race and is strictly the one to beat here. The Derby field was solid and the weather proved to me he is a gomer and I believe this is not a very strong field. The problem is there is no value in betting an even money horse. Those horses that are coming to Maryland from the Derby are sure to be weary AND really never had a shot in the race. The second, third and fourth place finishers are all passing and the newcomers weren’t in the Derby for a reason.

One caveat; Goldencents didn’t really do much running so maybe he bounces back here and gets brave on the front end and holds on for second. He showed more coming into the Derby and I am willing to give him a pass.
As I look at the field and try to come up with a wager I must admit that I am less than enthused and at a loss for how to make a worthwhile wager. I will be rooting for Orb so that we have a shot for a Triple Crown Winner in three weeks in New York.

After much consideration here is my one wager:
    $20 Exacta Orb/Goldencents
    That’s it….
    Good Luck!

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

    13) Other NBA owners have to be excited that the Kings sold for $535M; Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson can now go back to being doing mayorly things. The former NBA star worked his butt off to keep the Kings in town, and he has succeeded. Hope the voters appreciate his efforts and re-elect him.

    12) Damn, Bernie Madoff’s victims lost a total of $65B, that’s billion, with a B. Where did all that money go?

Prison is too good for this evil bastard; they should let him loose on the street and let his victims have at him.

    11) When Stephen Strasburg went eight innings at Petco Thursday, it was the first time in his big league career he threw eight innings in a game- that took me by surprise.

    10) Syracuse is already making noise about wanting the ACC tournament in Madison Square Garden; wonder what Coach K and Roy Williams think about that?

Didn’t the Big East keep MSG as the site of its conference tournament? The ACC is Tobacco Road country; Orange alums better get used to it.

    9) New Zealander Steven Adams, who will be a first round draft pick next month, has 17 siblings—17!!!!! No wonder he left Pitt after one year, although one more year would’ve helped his game thrive in the professional ranks.

    8) Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel not only is out until at least December with a knee injury, he weighed in at 6-10, 206. Historically, skinny forwards haven’t fared that well in the NBA. Another kid who could’ve used some extra time to let his body mature and his knee heal, but if he’s a top-5 pick, $10M guaranteed is awful hard to turn down. Not sure Adams will get picked that high, but Noel will.

    7) One of the underrated difficulties for Japanese baseball players coming over here are the long plane flights. Japan is a smaller country; the teams travel by train. A coast-to-coast plane trip takes some getting used to. Apparently Daisuke Matsuzaka had a real problem pitching on the first day after a long plane trip.

    6) Atlanta Braves played 26 of their first 40 games on road, so they’ll have lot of home games coming up-- they got Jason Heyward (appendix) back this weekend, so they’re hopeful of putting a win streak together.

    5) Twins pitcher Vance Worley once had a sneaker collection of around 400 pair that was worth $28-30,000; now he’s down to about half that, but he says the collection is still worth $20,000 or so. I have six pairs and haven’t bought a new pair since 2010.

    4) 14-year old Guan Tianlang made cut at his first two PGA Tournaments, but he shot 70-77 this weekend and missed his first pro cut.

    3) Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel threw out the first ball at Petco Thursday night, after shooting 79 at Pebble Beach earlier in the week; he seems to be getting around an awful lot. The sophomore-to-be at Texas A&M is playing in Marshall Faulk’s charity golf event this weekend; hope he’s not neglecting his football preparation—he’s going to be a marked man this fall.

    2) “Always assume you’re being videotaped.” In this day and age, you just might be. If the mayor of Toronto had followed this advice, his life might be a whole lot simpler these days.

    1) Dick Vitale hosted his gala for the V Foundation in Florida last night; the V Foundation has raised over $100 million over the last twenty years to combat cancer. Vitale is a tireless, enthusiastic worker for this cause and deserves a lot of credit for doing so much, even if at times, it seems like its all he ever talks about. It’s an important cause, so good for him.

NASCAR betting: Sprint All-Star Race preview

The field for this year's 29th NASCAR Sprint Cup All-Star Race will feature 22 drivers and the 90-lap race will take place at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday night.

The race will consist of four 20-lap segments followed by a mandatory pit stop and 10-lap sprint to the finish for a lucrative $1 million prize.

      Favorite: Jimmie Johnson (+500)

Johnson collected the $1 million prize for taking the checkered flag at the All-Star event last season. In the past eight All-Star Races at Charlotte, he ranks third out of 37 drivers with an average place of 6.9.

      Live dog: Greg Biffle (+1,500)

Biffle has finished outside the top 10 for four consecutive races, but seems to excel in non-points races. In the past eight NASCAR Sprint Showdown races at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Biffle ranks first out of 39 drivers with an average place of 1.7.

      Long shot: Mark Martin (+4,000)

Mark Martin claimed his first All Star race victory in 1998 and drove to another in 2005. The Michael Waltrip Racing driver is preparing for his 24th All-Star Race -the most of any driver. In 23 All-Star events, Martin has six top-five finishes to go along with his two victories.

Key stat: Seven times from seven different drivers has the winner of the all-star event gone on to win the 600-mile race at Charlotte the following weekend.

      Notable quotable:

"It's like, 'Hey, can you make it from the balcony into the pool without hitting the pool deck?' There's one way to figure it out. You can do all the calculating you want, but you've just got to try it." – Greg Biffle on NASCAR’s decision to allow drivers to speed on pit row during practice and qualifying for the All-Star event.

Odds to win Sprint All-Star Race courtesy of JustBet:

      Kyle Busch 5/1
      Jimmie Johnson 5-1
      Matt Kenseth 6/1
      Denny Hamlin 15/2
      Kasey Kahne 8/1
      Carl Edwards 12/1
      Brad Keselowski 12/1

Preakness Stakes betting: Horse-by-horse preview and picks

A small field of nine will head to the post for the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Saturday. Orb, who won the Kentucky Derby by 2.5 lengths, looks to move a step closer to the Triple Crown, as the odds-on favorite.

Here’s a look at the field and Preakness Stakes odds:

        1. Orb (Jockey-Joel Rosario) 1-1

Orb has won five in a row and deserves to be the heavy chalk in the Preakness. But his trip in the Kentucky Derby couldn’t have gone any better and he drew post No. 1 for Saturday’s race, where no horse has won since 1994. It’s tough to bet against Orb but at even money there’s better value elsewhere.

        2. Goldencents (Kevin Krigger) 8-1

Finished 17th as the third choice in the Kentucky Derby but it was clear he couldn’t handle the pace nor the sloppy track. Throw that race out and he fits with these, but questions still remain whether he can get the distance.

        3. Titletown Five (Julien Leparoux) 30-1

Appears to be more of a sprinter and could be the pace setter here. Titletown Five’s biggest problem is that there is plenty of other speed in the field, so the chances he can steal the race are unlikely. Deserves to be the longest shot in the race.

        4. Departing (Brian Hernandez Jr.) 6-1

Departing is kind of a mystery. He blasted a much weaker field in the Illinois Derby but he did so while running five wide the entire trip. Ran a solid third in the Louisiana Derby against some of these horses and he’s got decent speed figures. Should be in the mix.

        5. Mylute (Rosie Napravnik) 5-1

Mylute had a great trip behind Orb in the Kentucky Derby but really didn’t have the closing kick to mount a serious challenge. Still, Mylute finished fifth as Napravnik notched the best finish by a female jockey in the race’s history. Twenty-five of the last 27 Preakness winners also ran in the Derby.

        6. Oxbow (Gary Stevens) 15-1

Ran a decent sixth in the Kentucky Derby but got tired in the sloppy going. One of D. Wayne Lukas’ three mounts in the race, Oxbow is just 2 for 10 lifetime and doesn’t appear to have what it takes to beat this quality field. Will be a long shot.

        7. Will Take Charge (Mike Smith) 12-1

Checked in the stretch to finish eighth in the Kentucky Derby. Although he didn’t look like he was going to become a serious menace, he does have an excuse. This one is well bred and ran better than his odds against a better field. He’s a live long shot in the Preakness.

        8. Governor Charlie (Martin Garcia) 12-1

A foot injury forced trainer Bob Baffert to skip the Kentucky Derby but the lightly-raced colt will be fresh for Saturday. Baffert has won the Preakness five times and Governor Charlie has trained well and should be near the lead. How long he’ll last is another question.

        9. Itsmyluckyday (John Velazquez) 10-1

Whether it was the slop or the distance this one ran poorly in the Derby. Took a lot of money in the Run for the Roses and his morning line of 10-1 seems generous here. If you can throw out the Kentucky Derby, Itsmyluckyday has a chance at a price.

        Picks: 1. Departing. 2. Orb. 3. Itsmyluckyday

JR Smith is 26-85 in five losses vs Pacers, 19-47 in four New York Ws- in seven games since a suspension in Boston series, Smith is shooting 28.2% from floor. 11 of last 15 Knick games stayed under the total; 12 of last 19 Indy games went over (0 of last 3). NBA Western Conference finals preview: Spurs vs. Grizzlies
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies duke it out in the Western Conference championship with a ticket to the NBA Finals on the line.

Here’s a look at how these teams stack up and their odds to win the series heading into Game 1 this Sunday.

No. 2 San Antonio Spurs vs. No. 5 Memphis Grizzlies

          Season series: Tied 2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS, 1-3 O/U
Series prices: San Antonio -120, Memphis +100

Why bet the Spurs: San Antonio has the ability and experience to switch gears, going from an up-tempo style versus the Warriors to a slowed-down grinder with the Grizzlies. The Spurs aren’t intimidated on the road, with their only loss away from the Alamo coming in OT.

Tim Duncan is the most skilled big man Memphis has met this postseason and he stepped up versus the Grizzlies this season, averaging 19.7 points, 12.7 rebounds and three blocks in three games. San Antonio has better shooters and more depth – ranked No. 5 in bench production to Memphis’ No. 27-ranked reserves.

The Grizzlies have caught some lucky breaks this postseason. The Clippers’ stars were falling apart in the first round and they took advantage of a Thunder squad missing its All-Star point guard. San Antonio is relatively healthy despite the age of its superstars.

Why bet the Grizzlies: Memphis is on pace to become one of the best bets in recent NBA playoff history. Since dropping Game 1 against the Clippers, the Grizzlies have covered in 10 straight games. Memphis holds the mental edge over the Spurs, having eliminated them from the first round of the 2011 playoffs in six games, going 5-0-1 ATS in that series.

Memphis is a tough team to slow offensively, with a different scorer stepping up each night. Four players are averaging double figures in the playoffs, including PG Mike Conley Jr. who is averaging 17.6 points per game. The Grizzlies average the fewest amount of turnovers this postseason.

Defensively, the Grizzlies are a physical squad that wears down opponents over the course of a series. Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph plug up the middle and won’t give Tony Parker free range in the paint while Tayshaun Prince and Tony Allen get a hand up on the Spurs’ shooters.

Knicks at Pacers: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Indiana Pacers (-5, 177.5)

          Pacers lead best-of-seven series 3-2.

For all the love that Paul George has gotten during the postseason, it is becoming apparent that George Hill might actually be the most important player for the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers hope to have their point guard back when they host the New York Knicks in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Saturday. Hill sat out Game 5 with a concussion and the Indiana offense noticeably suffered without its director.

Hill spent Game 5 in a darkened training room after taking an elbow from Knicks center Tyson Chandler in the previous game. He will need to pass the NBA’s concussion protocol in order to return to the lineup, and that could take some time. Meanwhile New York will try to keep the magic it found at home going in Indiana, where the Pacers have yet to lose in the postseason. The Knicks have been in a shooting slump during the entire series but came through on the defensive end by limiting Indiana to 36.2 percent shooting and holding their own on the boards.

          TV:
          8 p.m. ET, ESPN

          ABOUT THE KNICKS:
Carmelo Anthony failed to record a field goal in the fourth quarter during Game 3 or 4 at Indiana but came through late in Game 5 with four straight points that helped put the game away. The star forward went 10-for-28 from the field in Game 5 and is shooting 41.3 percent in the series. “We wasn’t ready to go home yet,” Anthony said. “We wanted to protect our homecourt. We let one slip away here on our homecourt (in Game 1) that put us in the position we’re in right now. But we’re just taking it one day at a time. We have faith, we believe, and we feel confident about this one.” Anthony got some much-needed scoring help from the bench, where both Chris Copeland and J.R. Smith scored 13 points. Smith struggled again to 4-for-11 from the field but Copeland hit a trio of 3-pointers in 19 minutes - his most playing time of the series.

          ABOUT THE PACERS:
Indiana is 7-0 in the postseason when Hill scores 14 or more points and 0-4 when he scores fewer. The 27-year-old guard reportedly suffered the concussion in the first half of Game 4 but still went on to score 14 points in the third quarter of that game en route to a game-high 26. But symptoms began to crop up the next day, and the Pacers and the NBA won’t take any chances. “He’s gotta pass the NBA protocol concussion test,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. D.J. Augustin started in Hill’s place in Game 5 and scored 12 points but did not have an assist in 39 minutes. George absorbed more of the ball handling responsibilities, in addition to being counted on for scoring production and taking the main defensive assignment on Anthony. “We gotta approach Game 6 as a desperation game,” George said. The All-Star forward scored a team-high 23 points in Game 5 but went 10-for-36 in Games 3 and 4 in Indiana.

          TRENDS:

          * Knicks are 1-5 ATS in their last six games following an ATS win.
          * Pacers are 5-0 ATS in their last five home games.
          * Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
          * Over is 11-2 in Pacers’ last 13 games following a loss.

          BUZZER BEATERS

          1. Pop star Rihanna suggested on Instagram that Smith has struggled because he’s hung over from partying. “I don’t follow that,” Knicks coach Mike Woodson told reporters. “It has no bearing on this game tonight.”

          2. Indiana went 19-for-33 from the free throw line in Game 5.

          3. New York G Jason Kidd was limited to five minutes in Game 5 and went 0-for-1 from the field. He is 0-for-17 in the last nine games.

Kings at Sharks: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks (-123, 4.5)

            Los Angeles leads series 2-0.

Entering their Western Conference second-round series against their Pacific Division rivals, the sixth-seeded San Jose Sharks were one of the most dangerous teams on the power play this postseason. Heading into Game 3 at HP Pavilion on Saturday, the fifth-seeded Los Angeles Kings are the ones clicking with the man advantage. San Jose finds itself in a must-win situation thanks to Los Angeles' power play, which converted three times on six opportunities - including twice in a 22-second span late in the third period - en route to a 4-3 home triumph on Thursday that gave the reigning Stanley Cup champions a 2-0 series lead.

The Sharks were 7-for-24 on the power play during their four-game sweep of the Northwest Division champion Vancouver Canucks in the first round. They have been unable to cash in against the Kings, going 0-for-7 over the first two games. Defenseman Drew Doughty gave Los Angeles a 2-0 lead at 4:10 of the second period with a man-advantage tally and captain Dustin Brown forged a 3-3 tie during a 5-on-3 with 1:43 remaining in the third. Trevor Lewis completed the improbable comeback shortly after the ensuing faceoff with San Jose still down a skater.

            TV:
9 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS

            ABOUT THE KINGS:
Brown believes having a large chunk of players from last season's championship team on the roster already has paid dividends this postseason. "Experience is one thing. It's another thing to have all that experience together as a group of guys because that goes a long way when you get yourself into a hole," Brown told the Los Angeles Times after Game 2. "We didn't play a great game, but we found a way to win." The Kings also were in a hole when they lost the first two games of their first-round series against the St. Louis Blues. All that experienced group of players has done is win six consecutive contests since. Jarret Stoll did not play on Thursday after receiving a hit to the head from Raffi Torres in the series opener. While not a marquee name, Stoll has been a key part to Los Angeles' success. "He may not be a top-two-line guy for us, but he's got a lot of fingerprints all over the game every time we have one," defenseman Rob Scuderi told the Times. The Kings have won 12 consecutive home games.

            ABOUT THE SHARKS:
Game 1 may have been the last contest played by Raffi Torres in a San Jose uniform. An unrestricted free agent after the season, the left wing was suspended for the remainder of the series as a result of his head shot on Stoll. Torres has been banned several times during his career, most notably last postseason when he received a 25-game suspension - which later was reduced to 21 games - for a hit to the head of Chicago's Marian Hossa. Captain Joe Thornton didn't think Torres' hit on Stoll was dirty at all. "We were kind of shocked to hear that he has to fly to New York for the hearing," Thornton told the San Jose Mercury News on Thursday. "We didn't see anything wrong on the play." Coach Todd McLellan believes his was the better team in Game 2, save for the 22-second span late in the third period. "When you get three (goals), you'd better beat this team," McLellan said. "We've got to get back to San Jose and feel good about what we did for 59 minutes. ... There's a lot of good to take out of that game. I liked a lot. I disliked the fact that we lost."

            TRENDS:

            * Home team is 11-1 in the last 12 meetings.
            * Over is 5-1-3 in the last nine meetings.
            * Kings are 4-1 in the last five meetings.
            * Kings are 10-25 in the last 35 meetings in San Jose.

            OVERTIME:

            1. Kings C Anze Kopitar left Game 2 in the opening minute of the third period after being hit in the left side of his face with a puck but returned midway through the session.

            2. With Torres suspended, LW Tim Kennedy was inserted into San Jose's lineup. As a result, C Scott Gomez was moved up to the third line and took advantage of the promotion by recording two assists.

            3. Sharks C Patrick Marleau has scored a goal in five of his team's six playoff games.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three streaking pitchers worth a look on the road Saturday
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday's MLB schedule features a few starters that maybe didn't get off to the best starts in the 2013 season, but might just be turning things around lately. Here is a rundown of some guys on the hill Saturday that have had some recent success on the road.

Brandon Morrow, Toronto Blue Jays (1-2, 4.69 ERA)

The Jays righty seems to be coming around after a slow start to the season. Morrow has pitched very well in his last three outings with the Jays, victorious in all three. He won his last road start versus the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 6-5. Morrow went 6 1/3 innings giving up three earned runs along the way.

The righty takes the hill against the New York Yankees Saturday. Morrow was roughed up by the Yankes earlier in the year giving up five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Brandon McCarthy, Arizona Diamondbacks (0-3, 5.62 ERA)

McCarthy is still winless on the season but the Diamondbacks have won the last two games he has started away from home. McCarthy lasted 6 1/3 innings giving up just three earned runs in his last road start versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is also coming off his best pitching performance of the season, going eight strong innings with no earned runs versus the Philadlphia Phillies.

McCarthy takes the hill versus the lowly Miami Marlins Saturday.

Marco Estrada, Milwaukee Brewers (3-2, 5.32 ERA)

The Brew Crew have won three of Estrada's last four starts away from Miller Park and he's given them some quality performances in those games. His last start, on the road in Pittsburgh, was his best of the season. He went seven innings giving up one earned run en route to the 5-1 victory.

Milwaukee is on the road to face the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday. Estrada went six innings in his last start at Busch Stadium. The Brewers won 4-3 but he did not factor in the decision.
