    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Over/under win totals for teams in NFC and AFC South:

    NFC South
Falcons 10, over -$135. Will Steven Jackson spark their running game?

Panthers 6.5, over -$130 Still can't believe they wouldn't pay John Fox.

Saints 9.5-- Order should be restored with Sean Payton back in charge.

Bucs 6.5-- Drafted Glennon; is Schiano unhappy with QB Freeman?

    AFC South
Texans 11, over 11, -$150-- Now is their time to challenge for AFC title.

Colts 8, over -$150-- Brought in Stanford's OC to replace departed Arians.

Jaguars 4.5, over -$140-- Lowest over/under win total in league.

    Titans 6.5, under -$140-- Locker/Fitzpatrick a shaky QB combo.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

    13) Stuff like this makes NHL seem bush league; two teams down 3-2 win Game 6's on Sunday, and they have to play Game 7 on Monday? What imbecile thought this was a good idea?

    12) To make matters worse, the Bruins' plane had a mechanical failure, so the team had to stay in Toronto overnight and will travel home the day of a Game 7. Conspiracy theorists can now begin; did an overly-avid Leafs' fan mess with the Boston plane? Stranger things have happened.

    11) Sergio Garcia was tied for the lead at the PLAYERS Championship, then went all Tin Cup and played the last two holes in +6, hitting two balls in the water on the famous 17th hole. Not his finest moment.

    10) Cubs gave 1B Anthony Rizzo a 7-year contract worth $41M; pretty big leap of faith on what Rizzo has done in his first 604 ABs (142 K's, 25 HRs, 85 RBI, .770 OPS). At least Mr Ricketts is spending money.

    9) It is an honor to listen to Hubie Brown broadcast NBA games, its a lot like attending a basketball seminar. I was lucky enough to meet Coach Brown once when he coached the Knicks. Very intense about basketball, good guy.

Seriously, friend of mine and I watched a Knick walk-through at Glens Falls Civic Center before a preseason game; we were sitting on the end of the bench, like we belonged there. Knicks played the Bulls that night; Chicago had a pretty good rookie that year, kid named Michael Jordan. Fun stuff.

    8) Home side won all six games in the Ranger-Washington series; Rangers scored 0 or 1 goal in four of the six games and are still alive. Interesting.

    7) Think about John Farrell leaving Toronto to manage the Boston Red Sox, a divisional rival, and you just know this rivalry will become personal. Throw in the Clay Buchholz/foreign substance kerfuffle, and it just adds to the fun. Very impressed by how Baltimore is above .500 again this year, as no one in the AL East seems strong enough to pull away from the pack.

    6) NL teams are 5-13 when playing at AL parks, where the DH is used; think it is a tougher adjustment than AL teams not using a DH at NL parks.

    5) Bad week to be the agent for former Lions WR Titus Young, who was arrested three times in eight days; however, its an excellent week to be his bail bondsman. Young had the world by the tail and couldn't handle it. Sad.

    4) Atlanta Braves are 5-11, 5.52 as a team in their last 16 road games.

    3) You cannot smoke indoors in public places in New York; you can smoke in casinos here in Las Vegas. Its just unusual for me to see people lighting up cigarettes, never understood why people smoke anyway.

    2) Arizona took Brandon McCarthy out after eight innings Sunday with a 2-0 lead, when he had thrown 85 pitches.

White Sox left Chris Sale in after eight innings with a 3-0 lead Sunday night,, and he wound up with a 98-pitch complete game.

Arizona's bullpen blew the game, which didn't make the move a bad move, just highlights an interesting contrast in philosophy.

    1) Penn State's former school president Graham Spanier earned $2.9M last year, including $1.2M in severance pay; must be nice. It is a crime if you're in Spanier's position and know an employee is a pedophile and you don't turn him in. Not a lot of criminals get $1.2M in severance pay.

      Armadillo's Write-Up

      Monday, May 13

Miami shot 50.7/51.4/60.0/50.0% in four games they beat Chicago this year, 46.2/48.1/39.7% in three losses. Miami won 14 of last 15 games overall; they're 6-1 in playoffs, with no wins by less than 10 points. Team that led at halftime won all six series games so far this season (one game was tied). Under is 4-2-1 in Heat's last seven away games. Chicago has been mentally tough in playoffs, they compete like hell, but reality is their 3rd string PG starts now. Hard to beat Miami that way.

Memphis won six of last seven games, losing by hoop in Game 1; if you want a barometer for the Thunder, check out Kevin Martin, who they got in the Harden trade- he reverted to 2-11/6-17 from floor in last two games, failing to give Oklahoma City a scoring threat to compliment the team's star, Durant. Last five series games were decided by six or less points. Thunder PG Westbrook is out for this series, which puts onus on vet PG Fisher and BC alum Jackson, who has five turnovers in 98 minutes in series, not bad. 18 of last 23 Thunder games stayed under the total. Oklahoma City covered four of last six as an underdog.

Heat at Bulls: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls (7.5, 186.5)

      Heat lead best-of-seven series 2-1.

The Chicago Bulls badly need victory to maintain a realistic chance of the winning the Eastern Conference semifinal series when they host the Miami Heat in Monday’s Game 4. The Heat have a 2-1 edge in the best-of-seven series and a third straight win would severely hinder Chicago’s attempts at an upset. The fifth-seeded Bulls are playing a physical brand of ball against the top-seeded Heat and figure to again be without starters Luol Deng and Kirk Hinrich.

Miami star LeBron James was less than thrilled with Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau calling him a flopper after Game 3 and Thibodeau’s pointed comments about the officiating drew him a $35,000 fine on Sunday. James got mixed up with Chicago’s Nazr Mohammed and was called for a technical foul while Mohammed was ejected for shoving James to the floor. “I play an aggressive game,” James said. “I don’t flop. I’ve never been one of those guys.” Deng (complications from a recent spinal tap) is expected to miss his sixth straight game while Hinrich (calf) will likely sit out for the seventh consecutive game.

      TV:
      7 p.m. ET, TNT

      ABOUT THE HEAT:
Center Chris Bosh was a force in Game 3 with 20 points and 19 rebounds after a quiet first two games in which he totaled 22 points and 11 boards. “I try to get behind the defense to get easy baskets, but if I move to the open spot, usually they find me,” Bosh said. “Those are my opportunities to be aggressive. If I’m open, I’m going to shoot or make the extra pass if need be.” Backup guard Norris Cole has been sensational in the series. Cole has made 16-of-20 shots – including all eight of his 3-pointers – while averaging 14.3 points.

      ABOUT THE BULLS:
Chicago has very little depth with Deng and Hinrich joining guard Derrick Rose (knee) on the sidelines and the situation was a factor in the Game 3 loss. Miami had a 36-8 edge in bench points and four Chicago starters played 42 or more minutes. Forward Jimmy Butler played 48 minutes for the second time in the series and the fourth time in five games. Butler had 21 points and 14 rebounds in Game 1 and said Sunday that the physical play is going to continue. “I feel like that’s what it’s been from the very beginning and I don’t expect it to change,” Butler said. “We’re coming in and we want to be the aggressor.”

      TRENDS:

      * Heat are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games playing on 2 days of rest.
      * Bulls are 4-0 ATS in their last four games following a double-digit loss at home.
      * Over is 6-1 in Bulls’ last seven overall.
      * Over is 5-1 in Heat’s last six Conference Semifinals games.

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. Miami averaged 109.5 points in its two victories after scoring only 86 in the Game 1 loss.

      2. James had a series-best 25 points in Game 3 and is averaging 22.7 points and 7.7 assists.

      3. Bulls C Joakim Noah has two double-doubles in the series and five over his last seven games.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thunder at Grizzlies: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Memphis Grizzlies (-4.5, 184.5)

      Grizzlies lead best-of-seven series 2-1.

The Memphis Grizzlies haven’t forgotten the opportunity they let get away two seasons ago. They are in a similar situation Monday when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinal series. Memphis had a 2-1 lead over the Thunder in the 2011 semis but Oklahoma City notched an epic triple-overtime victory and eventually won the series. A win would put the Grizzlies in position of winning the series in Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Thunder forward Kevin Durant is well aware of what happened in 2011 and doesn’t see the deficit as a cause for worry or panic. “Same situation we was in a few years ago, so we know how to handle it,” Durant said on Sunday. Memphis is facing better odds this time around with Oklahoma City star Russell Westbrook sidelined but know a loss will even the series with the Thunder having two of the final three at home. “We’re in the same position now,” said guard Tony Allen, “so it’s time for us to conquer that moment and take advantage of these games ahead of us and try to win two games.”

      TV:
      9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

      ABOUT THE THUNDER:
Oklahoma City shot just 36.4 percent from the field in the Game 3 loss to drop its series accuracy rate to 39.9. The Thunder have been bottled up by the Memphis defense and miss the way Westbrook opens up the floor for easy scoring opportunities. Forward Serge Ibaka has been woeful with 12-for-39 shooting and guard Thabo Sefolosha is averaging only 4.3 points. Backup guard Kevin Martin scored 25 points in Game 1 and has just 19 on 8-of-28 shooting over the last two games. “This is a broken record but I know we can hit shots,” Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. “I’ve seen the ball go in the basket many, many times with our team and I have confidence that will happen and hopefully soon.”

      ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES:
Allen is known for his standout defense but he has averaged 13 points – and 3.5 steals – in the two Memphis wins. He’s not a very good shooter but has stellar court presence and his hustle creates opportunities as well as his thefts on the defensive end. He pairs well with solid point guard Mike Conley to make things tough on opponents. Conley dropped to 14 points in Game 3 after his epic performance in Game 2 when he hit the go-ahead basket and had 26 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Power forward Zach Randolph is coming off a subpar eight-point outing but is averaging 9.3 rebounds while thriving in the post with center Marc Gasol (averages of 21.3 points and eight rebounds).

      TRENDS:

      * Thunder are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
      * Grizzlies are 5-0 ATS in their last five home games.
      * Under is 4-1 in Thunder’s last five road games.
      * Road team is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. Oklahoma City is averaging just 89 points in the series. The Thunder averaged 105.7 during the regular season.

      2. Durant has three straight double-doubles in the series and is averaging 32 points and 12.3 rebounds.

      3. Grizzlies reserve F Quincy Pondexter is shooting 55.6 percent in the series and has made five 3-pointers.

Home side won all six Cap-Ranger playoff games, with home team scoring a power play goal in five of six games, while visitors are 0-16 in series with man advantage. Capitals did not have a power play in 1-0 loss Sunday, a game with only 45 faceoffs, compared to 72 in Game 5. Caps won 14 of last 19 games; Rangers won ten of their last 15 games, New York scored 4+ goals in seven of its last eight wins, 1-2-2-0-1 in its last five losses- they scored 0 or 1 goal in four of six series games, but are still here. All three Capital wins in this series went under total; two of three Ranger wins went over the total. Under is 12-2-5 last 19 series games- all five pushes ended 3-2. Rangers beat Washington in seven games LY, with last six games all decided by a single goal.

Maple Leafs stayed alive with 3-2/2-1 wins this weekend, just their 3rd/4th wins in last 16 games vs Boston, now face Bruin team that is just 5-10 in last 15 games overall, and had to travel home from Toronto Monday morning, due to plane issues (hmmm) Sunday night. Boston hasn't scored a first period goal in last three games, and only one in last five games- they're 3-6 in last nine home games. Over is 12-5-2 in last 19 series games. Bruins are 3-18 in series with man advantage. Toronto won three of its last four road games. Lot of pressure on both home teams to win Game 7; didn't help the Ducks last night. Bruins scored 4+ goals in all three series wins, 2-2-1 in the losses.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are two streaking and two slumping starting pitchers set to take the hill Monday:

                STREAKING

Jordan Zimmermann, Washington Nationals (6-1, 1.59 ERA)

Zimmermann has won three consecutive starts. In his last 24 innings pitched, the righty has allowed one earned run on ten hits, while striking out 19. But the righty hasn't fared well in his previous two starts against his next opponent – the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has a 5.25 ERA in two career starts against the Dodgers.

Travis Wood, Chicago Cubs (3-2, 2.33 ERA)

Woods has been one of the most consistent starters in the National League this season. The lefty hasn’t surrendered more than three earned runs in each of his seven starts and will get the ball against the Rockies Monday.

                SLUMPING

Marco Estrada, Milwaukee Brewers (2-2, 6.05 ERA)

The Brewers pushed Estrada’s start back to Monday against the Pirates to give him a few extra days to rest because his last two outings have been disastrous. The righty has been rocked for 13 earned runs in his last 8 1/3 innings pitched.

Justin Grimm, Texas Rangers (2-2, 3.45 ERA)

Grimm impressed in his first three outings of the season, picking up two wins and keeping his ERA to a stellar 1.59 mark. But the rookie has struggled in back-to-back starts, taking losses to the Chicago White Sox and Brewers. The righty has issued seven free passes during the losing skid. He walked only four in his previous three starts.

Monday's NHL playoff action: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins (N/A)

                      Series tied 3-3.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have clawed back from a 3-1 deficit to force Game 7 in their Eastern Conference first-round series with the Boston Bruins. Fourth-seeded Boston hosts the fifth-seeded Maple Leafs on Monday to determine who will advance to face the winner of the series between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers. Toronto goaltender James Reimer has allowed two goals on 74 shots following a 4-3 overtime defeat in Game 4 and came within 26 seconds of posting his first career playoff shutout in Sunday’s 2-1 triumph at home in Game 6, giving his team a chance for its first postseason series victory since defeating the Ottawa Senators in the first round in 2004.

The Bruins appear to be suffering from the same inability to score that plagued them at times during the regular season. Boston, which netted 131 goals during the 48-game campaign, averaged 3.75 goals over the first four games of the series thanks in large part to the line of David Krejci, Milan Lucic and Nathan Horton, but that trio has slowed its pace while the rest of the Bruins try to find their rhythm. Tyler Seguin, Brad Marchand and Jaromir Jagr all have failed to record a goal heading into the final game of the series. To make matters worse for Boston, the team announced it would be stuck in Toronto overnight and would not arrive home until Monday morning due to an issue with the team’s charter plane.

                      TV:
7 p.m. ET, CNBC, CBC, RDS, NESN (Boston)

                      ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS:
Captain Dion Phaneuf opened the scoring on Sunday with his first postseason goal since April 15, 2008 - when he was a member of the Calgary Flames. Phil Kessel scored his third of the series later in the contest and is finding some rare success against his former team. Kessel, who was limited to three goals and nine points in 22 career regular-season contests against Boston, has four points in the series. James van Riemsdyk added two assists in Game 6 to raise his team-leading total to five points. With defensemen Mike Kostka and Mark Fraser lost to injuries, Jake Gardiner is embracing a larger role. Gardiner, who has four points after being a healthy scratch in Game 1, was second on the team in ice time behind Phaneuf on Sunday after leading the team in Game 5. Tyler Bozak missed Sunday’s game after aggravating an upper-body injury and is questionable for Monday.

                      ABOUT THE BRUINS:
Tuukka Rask has performed well in net for Boston in his first playoff action since 2010 with a .932 save percentage thus far, but beyond Krejci’s line and captain Zdeno Chara, offense has been hard to find for the Bruins. Patrice Bergeron was held without a point on four shots in Game 6 and has scored once in the series. Seguin, selected second overall with the draft pick Toronto gave to Boston as part of the Kessel trade, leads the team with 27 shots but has yet to break through. Defenseman Andrew Ference, who missed Game 2 due to a suspension for hitting Toronto center Mikhail Grabovski in the head, was hurt in the third period of Game 5 and missed Sunday’s contest. Rookie Dougie Hamilton - another piece of the Kessel trade - played his second game of the series in place of Ference. Lucic scored the lone goal in Game 6 - his first of the postseason to go with six assists.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Over is 13-5-1 in the last 19 meetings in Boston.
                      * Over is 12-5-2 in the last 19 meetings.
                      * Maple Leafs are 4-12 in the last 16 meetings in Boston.
                      * Maple Leafs are 4-12 in the last 16 meetings.
                      * Road team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

                      OVERTIME:

                      1. Entering Monday, Boston is 15-2 all-time in series in which it held a 3-1 lead.

                      2. Toronto rookie C Joe Colborne, who was drafted in the first round by Boston in 2008, started in place of Bozak in Game 6. He registered six hits and two shots while logging 15:05 of ice time in his first career postseason appearance.

                      3. The Maple Leafs have not won three consecutive games against the Bruins since 2011, when they won twice on the road and once at home between February and March. That streak included a shootout victory.

New York Rangers at Washington Capitals (N/A)

                      Series tied 3-3.

The sixth-seeded New York Rangers and Southeast Division champion Washington Capitals are no strangers to facing off in a decisive Game 7. After the Rangers defeated the Capitals in last season's Eastern Conference second-round series with a 2-1 home triumph in Game 7, they'll look to repeat the feat on the road Monday in the final contest of the first-round set. That won't be an easy task as third-seeded Washington has won all three of its home games in the series - and 10 of 11 versus New York at the Verizon Center.

The Rangers, who are 0-5 all-time in Game 7s on the road, saw their series with the Capitals extended to the final contest for the third time in five years. Reigning Vezina Trophy winner Henrik Lundqvist registered his seventh career postseason shutout with 27 saves and Derick Brassard scored in the second period as New York posted a 1-0 victory on Sunday. Brassard has collected a team-leading seven points (two goals, five assists) in his first playoff series.

                      TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS2, MSG (New York), CSN (Washington)

                      ABOUT THE RANGERS:
While Brassard has enjoyed individual success, fellow former Columbus star Rick Nash has been nearly invisible in the series. Nash, who led the team with 21 goals in the regular season, has been limited to just one assist against Washington. In addition, New York's power play continues to lack punch. The Rangers failed on all five of their opportunities with the man advantage in Game 6 - including a 5-on-3 situation that lasted 44 seconds in the first period. New York is just 2-for-26 on the power play in the series.

                      ABOUT THE CAPITALS:
Hart Trophy finalist Alex Ovechkin hasn't dented the scoresheet in the last four contests. "It is what it is, nothing you can do," the captain said. "You're not gonna cry and say it's over. (Monday) is huge." Goaltender Braden Holtby knows that all too well as he prepares for his third career Game 7. The 23-year-old helped Washington skate to a 2-1 overtime win over Boston in the first round last season before making 29 saves in the decisive contest against the Rangers.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Home team is 6-0 in the last six meetings.
                      * Under is 21-6-2 in the last 29 meetings in Washington.
                      * Under is 14-5-8 in the last 27 meetings.
                      * Rangers are 1-5 in the last six meetings in Washington.

                      OVERTIME:

                      1. After Washington recorded a 3-1 triumph in Game 1, the next five contests resulted in one-goal outcomes.

                      2. New York has scored just two goals in three games in the nation's capital.

                      3. Washington overcame a 3-1 deficit in the series before skating to a 2-1 win in Game 7 in 2009. Veteran Sergei Fedorov scored the game-winning goal with 4:59 remaining in the third period.
