  • Preview: Blue Jays (23-30) at Braves (31-21)

    Game: 4
    Venue: Rogers Centre
    Date: May 30, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

The Toronto Blue Jays snapped the Atlanta Braves' lengthy home winning streak. Now R.A. Dickey will try to end his career-long win drought at Turner Field.

Dickey will try to help Toronto take three of four in this split-venue series when he goes for his first victory in six starts at Atlanta on Thursday night.

The Blue Jays (23-30) had lost 12 of 19 on the road and eight of nine in Atlanta before winning 3-0 on Wednesday to snap the Braves' seven-game run at home.

Former Brave Melky Cabrera went 3 for 3 with a two-run single and four pitchers combined for the team's first road shutout of the season. Toronto can now win its first season series with Atlanta since 2008.

That might prove difficult if Dickey (4-6, 4.85 ERA) can't pitch better at Turner Field. He's gone 0-2 with a 6.67 ERA in five starts there and was especially bad in two such outings in 2012 despite winning the Cy Young Award, giving up 13 runs in 9 1-3 innings.

Dickey matched his loss total from last year after giving up six runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 6-5 defeat to Baltimore on Saturday.

"The journey is always ongoing but I certainly haven't felt like I did last year," he said. "There's some concrete reasons for that and there's some reasons I need to iron out in the bullpen in between outings."

Recurring neck and back soreness may have contributed to him yielding 11 homers in as many starts.

"My velocity hasn't been there this year so far, I haven't been able to go to the harder knuckleball," Dickey said.

The Braves (31-21) have hit an NL-leading 70 homers, but they had just four hits Wednesday in their fourth shutout at home this season. Freddie Freeman had two of those, including a triple, and is 7 for 13 in the series.

The first baseman went 6 for 9 with a homer and two doubles off Dickey last season.

The Braves, losers of three of four following an eight-game run, will give the ball to Mike Minor (6-2, 2.47) on Thursday. They could use a lengthy outing from him after starter Kris Medlen was removed after two innings Wednesday due to a contusion to his calf.

Minor has gone 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA in five May starts. He threw 7 1-3 innings of three-hit ball with 10 strikeouts in a 6-0 road win over the New York Mets on Saturday.

"He's a tough lefty," Freeman told the Braves' official website. "He goes out there, throws strikes, pounds the zone and he's not afraid to pitch to contact. We've got a great defense behind him. He's going to get his strikeouts, but he also knows we're going to make plays for him, too."

Minor has faced the Blue Jays once, a 5-1 home win June 21, 2011, in which he gave up one run in seven innings with eight strikeouts.

Cabrera, 11 for 20 in his career as a visitor at Atlanta, is 1 for 3 with a homer versus Minor.

Toronto will try to win three straight at Turner Field for the first time since 2006.

    • Preview: Rays (28-24) at Marlins (13-40)

      Game: 4
      Venue: Tropicana Field
      Date: May 30, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

With Alex Colome set to make his major league debut for the Tampa Bay Rays against the lowly Miami Marlins, Matt Moore will have to wait a day to attempt to become the majors' first nine-game winner.

Facing the worst offensive team in the major leagues, Colome appears to have a decent chance at immediate success Thursday night when the Rays look to continue their dominance in the Citrus Series.

Roberto Hernandez helped Tampa Bay (28-24) improve to an AL-best 8-1 in interleague games, allowing no earned runs over 8 2-3 innings in a 3-1 win at Miami (13-40) on Wednesday.

The Rays, who moved a season-high four games above .500 with their fourth straight victory, have outscored the Marlins 77-30 while winning 12 of the last 13 meetings.

The 23-year-old Moore, who is the youngest to win his first eight decisions since 22-year-old Babe Ruth did it in 1917, was originally scheduled to start as Tampa Bay tries for the four-game season series sweep.

After Wednesday's win, however, manager Joe Maddon announced the left-hander would be pushed back a day with Friday's scheduled starter Alex Cobb unavailable due to a finger laceration on his throwing hand.

That means Colome will get the opportunity to make an impression at the big-league level after going 4-5 with a 2.60 ERA in 10 starts at Triple-A Durham.

The 24-year-old right-hander had 61 strikeouts and walked 22 in 55 1-3 innings for the Bulls.

"My cutter is really good this year," Colome told the team's official website. "(Joel) Peralta help me in Spring Training, he pushed me to throw my changeup. Now my changeup is really good. I can throw for strike, strikeout, whatever. … I feel better. I feel more comfortable."

Colome may be able to continue that success against a Miami offense that ranks last in the major leagues with a .221 batting average, 145 runs and 27 homers. The Marlins managed only three hits Wednesday in their season-high eighth straight loss.

"Just another game like we've seen before where we couldn't get anything going offensively,' manager Mike Redmond said.

Scheduled Miami starter Ricky Nolasco (3-5, 3.65 ERA) has been hurt by the lack of offense, recording only one win despite allowing one run over seven or more innings in three of his last four starts.

The right-hander gave up one run and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings before leaving without a decision in a 2-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

"I'm just trying to execute," Nolasco said. "Just trying to make pitches and go deep into the game."

Since winning his first two starts against the Rays, Nolasco has gone 0-4 with a 12.33 ERA in the last four. He's 1-2 with an 8.79 ERA in three home starts versus Tampa Bay, yielding six homers.

He has managed to keep Evan Longoria and Kelly Johnson in check, with the two combining to go 5 for 26 with seven strikeouts. Johnson is 10 for 19 with nine RBIs in his last five games overall.

Yunel Escobar is hitting .429 with five RBIs over his last four games and is 10 for 27 (.370) lifetime in this matchup.

Chris Coghlan has been a bright spot lately for Miami, going 8 for 20 with four extra-base hits over his last five games.

Rookie teammate Marcell Ozuna singled in the fourth inning Wednesday to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest active run in the majors.

      • Preview: Brewers (19-32) at Twins (22-28)

        Game: 4
        Venue: Miller Park
        Date: May 30, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

Playing with some confidence in their series against the struggling Milwaukee Brewers, the Minnesota Twins could get an added boost if one of their sluggers can return.

The resurgent Twins will attempt to win four in a row for the first time since late April on Thursday night when they host Milwaukee, which is looking to avoid its longest skid of the season.

Although third baseman Trevor Plouffe was activated from the seven-day concussion disabled list before Minnesota's 4-1 win Wednesday, he was a late scratch from the lineup after his calf cramped up during pregame sprints.

Plouffe, who hasn't played since getting struck in the head while trying to turn a double play May 21, could be in the lineup Thursday. He's hitting .254 with four home runs and 17 RBIs on the season.

Plouffe batted .310 with five RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak just before sustaining the concussion. He's batted .400 with three homers in his last five games against the Brewers (19-32).

"He's excited to be back and has done all his work," said manager Ron Gardenhire, whose club has won four of five to move out of last place in the AL Central. "He was approved to play, so it's nice to have him back out there."

While Gardenhire hopes to have Plouffe on the field as the Twins (22-28) try for a sweep of this four-game set, the Brewers will get a key member of their rotation back as they try to avoid a season-worst six-game skid.

Kyle Lohse (1-5, 3.76 ERA) is scheduled to make his first career start against Minnesota after missing his last outing because of discomfort in his elbow.

After going 1-1 with a 2.52 ERA through his first four outings, Lohse has posted a 4.80 ERA while dropping four straight decisions.

The Brewers, though, haven't given Lohse much support, totaling six runs for him in his last five outings. His 2.78 run-support average ranks among the lowest in baseball.

Milwaukee has averaged 3.2 runs while losing 21 of 26 in May.

"Eventually we're going to come out of this, but it's getting old going out and losing all the time,' manager Ron Roenicke said.

Minnesota's Aaron Hicks, batting .165, has hurt the Brewers with two homers and two doubles in this series. The rookie center fielder has also made a couple of outstanding defensive plays in key moments during the set.

Teammate Josh Willingham has gone 0 for 6 against Lohse.

P.J. Walters allowed two runs in six innings of his season debut to help the Twins snap a 10-game losing streak with a 3-2 win at Detroit on Saturday.

"That's not an easy lineup to shut down, but P.J. did a great job," Gardenhire said. "He got us deep enough and then our bullpen finished it off.'

The right-hander, 2-5 with a 5.69 ERA in 12 starts last season, makes his first appearance against the Brewers.

He'll try to cool off former Twin Carlos Gomez, who went 2 for 4 with a double Wednesday and is 7 for 19 with four homers over his last five games.

        • Preview: Royals (21-29) at Cardinals (35-17)

          Game: 4
          Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
          Date: May 30, 2013 8:15 PM EDT

Missouri's two teams continue to head in opposite directions, with the red-hot St. Louis Cardinals looking to complete a four-game sweep of the sinking Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.

The Cardinals rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Royals (21-29) on Wednesday night, scoring four times in the eighth inning for their seventh win in eight games and 21st in 27. They have recorded at least 10 hits in 17 of those 27 contests and are batting .292 in May, tops in the major leagues.

They've been sparked by the hot play of catcher Yadier Molina, who had three hits Wednesday to give him a .650 average in his last six games, and first baseman Allen Craig, who is 7 for his last 12.

Right fielder Carlos Beltran has bounced back from an 0-for-9 stretch, going 3 for 8 with two home runs in the past two games for St. Louis (35-17).

Now the Cardinals will send highly touted prospect Michael Wacha to the mound for his major league debut in this contest.

"The key, from my perspective, is that we just have to manage expectations a little bit," general manager John Mozeliak told the team's official website. "He's a year removed from college and being thrust into a very competitive division with a lot of expectations being put on him, I don't know how fair that's going to be. I just think people need to be patient."

The right-hander out of Texas A&M garnered plenty of attention during spring training, surrendering one unearned run over 11 2-3 innings while striking out 15. He stayed on the fast track at Triple-A Memphis, posting a 4-0 record and 2.05 ERA.

"It's well-deserved," Mozeliak said of Wacha's promotion. "He was really good this spring and he hasn't disappointed at Triple-A. We're just going to take it day by day. He's a talented young man and he may be here for awhile."

Wacha will face a slumping Kansas City lineup that has mustered 16 runs during an eight-game losing streak. Designated hitter Billy Butler hasn't hit a home run since May 14 and is 5 for 25 with one extra-base hit during the slide.

Third baseman Mike Moustakas hasn't homered since May 10 and is batting .154 in his past eight contests.

The Royals' Jeremy Guthrie (5-3, 3.92) has also fallen into a dramatic slump, losing his last three starts with a 7.91 ERA after posting a 2.28 mark in his first seven. The right-hander has allowed eight home runs in his last three outings after giving up seven in his first seven games.

Guthrie appeared to be well on his way to getting back on track Saturday, holding the Los Angeles Angels without a hit through five innings, but he allowed four runs in the eighth and gave up seven in 7 1-3 innings overall in a 7-0 loss.

"I executed better today,' Guthrie said. "It came unraveled in the eighth. We couldn't seem to make a play and things didn't work out for us.'

          • Preview: Astros (16-37) at Rockies (28-25)

            Game: 4
            Venue: Minute Maid Park
            Date: May 30, 2013 8:40 PM EDT

The Colorado Rockies have not fared well at home against AL foes.

Not even a visit by that league's worst team could change that.

Colorado will try to avoid a fifth loss in six games Thursday night in the series finale against the Houston Astros.

After splitting a pair of one-run games in Houston to open this home-and-home set, the Rockies (28-25) were denied an eighth straight home win over the Astros (16-37) on Wednesday, losing 6-3.

Colorado is 14-5 at Coors Field against the NL but just 2-5 when hosting AL clubs. The Rockies have dropped 15 of 17 at home during interleague play.

"We didn't get the big hit to get the big inning," manager Walt Weiss said.

The Rockies, though, may have caught a break as they'll face Lucas Harrell (3-6, 5.43 ERA) on Thursday. The right-hander is 0-4 with an 8.22 ERA in five starts this month after losing his career-high third consecutive start Saturday. He lasted a career-low 1 2-3 innings and allowed six runs in the 11-5 loss to Oakland.

"There's pretty much only two things to say about the game,' he said after getting charged with six runs. "It's embarrassing and it's frustrating."

Harrell's allowed one run in three of his four appearances outside Houston this season, but his only career start at Denver exactly a year ago was one of his worst. He was tagged for 10 hits and a career-high nine runs over five-plus innings of a 13-5 defeat.

Colorado will counter with Juan Nicasio (4-1, 4.38). The right-hander has been making a strong push to remain in the rotation, going 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his last two starts. Nicasio went five-plus innings in Saturday's 6-5, 10-inning loss at San Francisco, allowing two runs and seven hits.

"I felt great, had command of my fastball and threw it down in the zone, and my breaking ball went for strikes, too," Nicasio told the Rockies' official website.

He has no record with a 4.15 ERA in two starts against Houston, both coming last season.

Troy Tulowitzki continues to feast on Astros pitching, going 3 for 4 with a pair of homers and three RBIs Wednesday to improve to 6 for 14 in the series. He's hit safely in 11 straight with the Astros in town and has a major league-best .413 home batting average.

Tulowitzki has one hit - a double - in six at_bats off Harrell.

Michael Cuddyer's a .386 hitter versus Houston after his second consecutive three-hit game Wednesday. Cuddyer and Carlos Gonzalez, whose 13-game hitting streak against the Astros ended in the last game, both went deep off Harrell in his start last season.

Carlos Pena's ninth-inning homer Wednesday was Houston's first in four games. He's never faced Nicasio.

J.D. Martinez, 2 for 4 in each of the last two games, is hitless in six at_bats in that matchup, while AL player of the week Jason Castro is 0 for 5.

The Astros haven't won two straight since May 7-8. Their last set of back-to-back road victories came during a season-best three-game run April 9-12.

            • Preview: Dodgers (22-29) at Angels (24-29)

              Game: 4
              Venue: Dodger Stadium
              Date: May 30, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

Jason Vargas routinely finds success in May, and the Los Angeles Angels are hoping that holds true for one more game.

Vargas looks to conclude this month with another impressive performance as the Angels try to salvage a split of this four-game Freeway Series from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night.

Vargas (4-3, 3.43 ERA) is 12-4 with a 2.78 ERA and .218 opponents' average over 27 games in May since 2009. He's shown little ability to carry that momentum into June, however, going 7-9 with a 4.33 ERA in 21 starts.

The Angels are well aware of Vargas' inconsistency since he's 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA in five starts this month after going 0-3 with a 4.85 ERA in five April outings.

The left-hander has matched a career best by winning three consecutive starts, posting a 1.69 ERA while tossing at least seven innings each time.

"I don't feel any different than before," Vargas said. "It's just that the situations and outcomes have been different. I've been a little more efficient with pitch counts and controlling the count."

Vargas certainly did that Friday, yielding two runs in 7 1-3 innings of a 5-2 win at Kansas City.

"He's using both sides of the plate and changing speeds," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He understands his stuff and is very consistent with it. He's letting his defense make plays."

Perhaps facing the Dodgers in May can help Vargas. He's surrendered 10 runs and three homers in 10 2-3 innings while losing his last two starts against them - both in June.

Continued production from Erick Aybar could also make a difference. The shortstop is 10 for 23 (.435) with six RBIs over the past six home meetings with the Dodgers. He had three hits and an RBI in Wednesday's 4-3 victory after the Angels (24-29) dropped the previous two meetings at Chavez Ravine.

Mark Trumbo connected for his team-leading 12th homer and drove in three runs in the opener of this two-game set in Anaheim. However, he owns a .192 career average with five RBIs in 14 career meetings with the Dodgers (22-29).

Matt Kemp will likely sit out after a mild right hamstring strain forced him to exit Wednesday's defeat in the seventh inning after going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts.

"When you feel it grabbing, you've got to take it easy and make sure you're careful with it because it can get worse," he said. "I'll get an MRI (Thursday) and we'll go from there. I don't how much time I'll miss."

Playing without Kemp would normally be a huge blow to the Dodgers, but the slugger is 1 for 17 with 10 strikeouts over the past six games and has one home run since April 25.

Despite being a member of the Dodgers since 2010, Ted Lilly (0-1, 4.05) is scheduled to get his first taste of the Freeway Series. He's 0-3 with a 5.94 ERA in his last three starts against the Angels, but the most recent was a 12-0 loss with the Chicago Cubs on June 19, 2010.

The left-hander's latest trip to the mound was his first since missing nearly a month with a strained right rib cage - his second stint on the disabled list this year. Lilly yielded two runs - one earned - and two hits in 5 1-3 innings while not getting a decision in a 5-3 win over St. Louis.

-- Tuesday night was first time in Mariano Rivera's great career that he got the loss in a game where he didn't record an out.

-- Former Alabama backup QB Philip Ely is transferring to Toledo, where he'll have two years to play in the MAC, starting in 2014.

-- William Gates Jr is going to Furman to play hoop; his dad was co-star of Hoop Dreams, the 90's documentary about high school basketball.

-- Dioner Navarro homered three times Wednesday, the first Cub catcher to do that since the immortal George Mitterwald in 1974.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a warm spring day

                13) World Series of Poker started Wednesday, the first two of 62 events tipping off. Main Event starts July 6; I’ll be out there when the Main Event ends, maybe I’ll drive over to Rio and get on ESPN!!!

                12) Miami/Indiana split their last six games; during that time, Heat is 45-3 against the rest of the NBA.

                11) Steve Kerr basically dared the NBA to fine guys for flopping in Game 4 at Indiana Tuesday night, calling the game “….a flopfest.” All refs have to do is stop calling offensive fouls, and flopping will end, and quickly.

                10) Pacers are hurting Miami on the offensive boards, grabbing 39.9% of their misses; that’s either very good offensive rebounding, or bad rebounding by the defense. Or a little of both.

                9) Brewers SS Juan Segura went 6-7 Tuesday night, first MLB player with six hits in a game since Adrian Gonzalez four years ago.

                8) Former Oregon State PG Ahmad Starks transferred home to Illinois; he would like to play this year, and stunningly, he has a sick grandmother to use as an excuse to become eligible right away. Funny how that works.

                7) Colorado fired AD Mike Bohn, who had a contract that ran thru 2017; bad news for new football coach Mike MacIntyre, who came in from San Jose State. A coach never wants the AD that hired him to leave, especially before he ever coaches a game. The new AD just isn’t going to be as invested in a coach he didn’t hire.

                6) Colorado P Jorge de la Rosa has made 11 starts; Rockies scored exactly two runs in six of the 11 games, and won all five when they scored more.

                5) LA Kings’ forward Justin Williams is first NHL’er ever to scored a goal in his first four Game 7’s; odd thing is, those Game 7’s were played for three different teams over a 10-year span. Home team won all seven games in LA-San Jose series.

                4) Oakland’s starting pitching has gotten a lot better this month, which explains their recent hot streak; in his first seven starts this year, Jarrod Parker was 1-5, 7.60. In his last four starts, Parker is 2-1, 2.96.

If the A’s get to their bullpen with a lead in the 7th inning, they’re generally pretty strong- their starters had struggled finishing six innings in the first 5-6 weeks, but are doing it now.

                3) Here’s why Katin Reinhardt can't play point guard for Andy Enfield at USC; of the 148 dunks Enfield’s Florida Gulf Coast team had LY, PG Brett Comer assisted on 65 of them. You think Reinhardt is that good a playmaker? If he was, he would’ve played PG for UNLV, which desperately needed a playmaker like Comer.

                2) Our thoughts and prayers to Argentinian basketball legend Oscar Schmidt, one of the most prolific gunners in basketball history. I’m serious, he made Allen Iverson look like John Stockton, he shot the ball so often. He could’ve played in the ABA with Bo Lamar and Machine Gun Grant. Great fun to watch; we pray/hope he gets better soon.

                1) So the Internet and newspapers are going nuts about Amanda Bynes getting arrested over the weekend and I’m sitting there like, “Who the hell is Amanda Bynes? Seriously, I don’t know.”

Seems like some of these “celebrities” get in trouble on purpose just to keep their names in the news, otherwise, they’d become, you know, ordinary and in this day and age, that would be the biggest crime of all.
