Memorial Day betting: Best and worst daytime MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 10 day games on the Memorial Day MLB slate. We take a look at the teams with the three best and worst day records playing Monday afternoon in an attempt to give you a handicapping edge.

        Best day records

        Cincinnati Reds (15-9)

The Reds have won five of their last six games and will host the Cleveland Indians Monday. Cincinnati has scored a MLB-best 125 runs in 24 daytime affairs (5.2 runs per game).

        Pittsburgh Pirates (12-7)

The Pirates are playing some solid baseball lately and tend to tear the cover off the ball during day games. Pittsburgh hitters have launched 25 home runs in the club’s 19 matinees, but they may be limited by Justin Verlander and the Tigers on holiday Monday.

        St. Louis Cardinals (12-8)

The Cardinals have driven in 97 runs under the sun – the fourth-best mark in the bigs. However, St. Louis will run into the big arm of the Royals’ James Shields on Monday.

        Worst day records

        Houston Astros (2-10)

The Astros are wretched regardess of what time they play and it should be no surprise that they're fade material. Houston pitchers have a lofty 5.87 ERA in the afternoon to date and they’ll square off with the big bats of the Colorado Rockies next.

        Miami Marlins (3-12)

I bet you could have guessed the Marlins would follow the Astros in this category. Miami batters average just 3.3 runs per game during early games and have a tough matchup in Tampa Bay looming.

        Milwaukee Brewers (5-12)

Wily Peralta will have the task of lowering the pitching staff’s daytime 5.22 ERA against the lowly Twins Monday. But he will be opposed by Kevin Correia, who has a team-high four wins for Minnesota.

                • Preview: Braves (30-19) at Blue Jays (21-29)

                  Game: 2
                  Venue: Rogers Centre
                  Date: May 28, 2013 12:37 PM EDT

While there's something about playing in AL parks that brings out the worst in the Atlanta Braves, the Toronto Blue Jays have shined lately facing NL opponents.

The Braves hope to avoid a seventh consecutive interleague road loss Tuesday night when they visit a disappointing Blue Jays team looking to extend its home win streak versus NL clubs.

Edwin Encarnacion, Colby Rasmus and J.P. Arencibia hit home runs to help the Blue Jays (22-29) improve to 5-3 on their nine-game homestand with a 9-3 victory over NL East-leading Atlanta (30-20) on Monday.

Toronto has outscored its opponents 30-12 while winning all three interleague games this season to raise its home win streak to six against NL foes dating back to last season.t

In contrast, Atlanta has been outscored 34-10 in four road losses versus AL opponents this season and has a six-game slide in interleague road games overall.

"Obviously, the results stink for me right now and for our club,' said Monday's loser Tim Hudson, who extended his winless streak to four starts. "I feel confident that things are going to be a lot better, hopefully really soon.'

The Braves will try to turn things around with Paul Maholm (6-4, 3.38 ERA) taking the ball in the finale at Rogers Centre before the series shifts for two games at Turner Field.

Maholm has won three of his last four starts, including the last two in which he's allowed two earned runs in 13 1-3 innings.

The left-hander is coming off his best start in more than a month, giving up only an unearned run over 7 1-3 innings in an 8-3 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday.

Though he hasn't faced them since 2011, Maholm is 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA in two career starts versus the Blue Jays.

He'll have to find a way to cool off Encarnacion, who is hitting .358 with four homers and 18 RBIs over his last 13 games. The first baseman is also batting .361 (13 for 36) with three doubles and a triple versus Maholm.

Teammate Jose Bautista has gone 15 for 29 with two homers and five RBIs in the past seven games.

Scheduled Toronto starter Brandon Morrow (2-3, 5.50) hasn't exactly been sharp, but the Blue Jays have won four of his last five starts while averaging 8.62 runs of support during that stretch.

The right-hander has allowed 11 runs and 17 hits - five homers - over 12 innings in his last two starts, getting tagged for six runs and a season-high 10 hits in seven-plus innings in a 12-6 win over Baltimore on Thursday.

Morrow left that outing after giving up back-to-back homers in the eighth inning.

"It's frustrating for me to go out give up the two home runs without getting an out there in the eighth,' said Morrow, who has never faced the Braves. "It put a sour taste in my mouth.'

B.J. Upton may be back in the lineup after sitting out Monday, though he's hitting .148 on the season and is 4 for 24 with 12 strikeouts lifetime against Morrow.

Catcher Evan Gattis went 3 for 4 with his 11th homer Monday and is 7 for 14 with four home runs over his last seven games.

Toronto's Brett Lawrie, who is 7 for 17 over his last five games, is day-to-day after spraining his left ankle sliding into second on a stolen base in the opener.

                  • Preview: Rockies (27-23) at Astros (14-36)

                    Game: 2
                    Venue: Minute Maid Park
                    Date: May 28, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

Just over two years removed from tearing an elbow ligament, Jorge De La Rosa has arguably been the Colorado Rockies' best pitcher.

De La Rosa tries to win a fifth consecutive start Tuesday when the visiting Rockies square off against the AL-worst Houston Astros.

De La Rosa (6-3, 3.40 ERA) has given Colorado a huge boost in his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery, and he's been especially good this month. The veteran left-hander has compiled a 2.31 ERA in winning each of his last four outings - his best such stretch since winning a career-high seven straight in 2009.

"With the amount of time he missed, a year and a half, I don't think he was going to come into spring training and be lights-out," manager Walt Weiss told MLB's official website. "It's been a process with Jorge. He's gotten better and better. To be honest with you, where he's at right now after missing that much time is real impressive."

De La Rosa turned in another great display Wednesday in a 4-1 victory over Arizona, allowing one run and six hits over 5 1-3 innings. He threw a season-high 103 pitches.

"I think I can get a little more strength in my arm, but I can't complain," he said. "My velocity's very good. All my breaking stuff is working very good. And I'm glad to feel the way I feel right now."

While De La Rosa has gone 4-0 with a 2.42 ERA at home, he's 2-3 with a 4.05 mark on the road.

The Astros (15-36) counter with Jordan Lyles (2-1, 5.40), who's coming off his own splendid performance. The right-hander gave up one run and six hits over six innings Wednesday, earning the win during a 3-1 victory over Kansas City.

"That's the best I've seen him throw in a long time," catcher Jason Castro said. "He had command, didn't miss. When we were trying to go certain locations, he missed where we were trying to go. He didn't leave really anything over the plate for guys to hit and that's big when you can do that."

Lyles is 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA over three appearances - one start - against the Rockies (27-24), who find themselves on the verge of a season worst-tying fourth consecutive loss.

Colorado collected 13 hits but went 3 for 18 with runners in scoring position during Monday's 3-2, 12-inning defeat. The Rockies have gone 8 for 44 in such situations during their skid.

"It's difficult to win that way, when you leave over 10 runners on base and not being able to get the big hit,' Carlos Gonzalez said. ``It's frustrating.'

After suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of Oakland, Houston bounced back to post its ninth home win in 29 tries. Carlos Pena had two RBIs and Brandon Barnes came through with a game-winning ground-rule double with two outs in the 12th for the Astros' first walkoff win.

"I think these kind of wins are definitely something that can catapult you forward from just an energy standpoint,' manager Bo Porter said. ``Finding a way as a team and to come out on top, that momentum can carry over.'

The Astros will need to be careful with Gonzalez, who's batting .411 with six homers and 16 RBIs during a 12-game hitting streak in the series.

These clubs play two more games in Colorado following this contest.

                    • Preview: Pirates (31-20) at Tigers (29-20)

                      Game: 2
                      Venue: Comerica Park
                      Date: May 28, 2013 7:08 PM EDT

Although manager Clint Hurdle said his Pittsburgh Pirates would pitch carefully to Miguel Cabrera, they didn't need to in the opener of this series with the Detroit Tigers.

It may be time to put that plan in place in the second game.

Cabrera enjoyed success over the previous two seasons against Jeanmar Gomez, who gets the ball Tuesday night with the visiting Pirates unbeaten in his five starts.

Hurdle called the reigning AL MVP the best hitter in baseball Monday before Pittsburgh's 6-5 loss. The manager said he would take his chances with Prince Fielder if he had to walk Cabrera, who entered this series on a 12-game hitting streak while batting .435 with seven homers and 17 RBIs.

"You're going to pass on Cabrera more often that not, and take whatever comes your way with Fielder," Hurdle told the Pirates' official website.

Cabrera went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, marking the second time over the last three seasons he has struck out that many times. He went 6 for 24 with just one walk last season against the Pirates (31-20).

The slugger is 4 for 9 with two homers and a walk since the start of 2011 against Gomez (2-0, 2.75 ERA), who had been with Cleveland before joining Pittsburgh during the offseason. Gomez is 2-2 in five starts against the Tigers with a 7.82 ERA - his third-highest against any opponent.

The right-hander has yet to last past five innings in five starts since being promoted from the bullpen, but the efforts have been good enough for the Pirates to win all of them. He won his big-league debut in 2010 against Detroit (29-20), but owns a 13.50 ERA in three career starts at Comerica Park.

Jhonny Peralta is 2 for 9 against Gomez, but he's hitting .429 over an eight-game hitting streak after going 4 for 4 on Monday. It was Peralta's first four-hit game since June 4, 2010, for Cleveland.

"He's swinging a magic wand right now," Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter said. "He can poke the bat out and get a hit. He can swing hard and get a hit. It's a lot of fun to play the game like that."

Detroit has won six of seven after handing Pittsburgh just its third loss in 13 games.

Pirates third baseman Brandon Inge, who played for the Tigers for over a decade and received an AL championship ring before Monday's contest, was a late addition to the starting lineup. Outfielder Starling Marte was removed shortly before the game because of migraine-like symptoms, and the ensuing shuffling of the lineup gave Inge his first chance to play at Comerica Park as a member of the visiting team.

Inge went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts as Pittsburgh struck out 15 times - 13 against Justin Verlander.

The Pirates will try to regroup against Rick Porcello (2-2, 6.28), who is 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA in two starts against them.

Porcello is 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA over his last five starts after going 0-2 with a 13.09 mark in his first three.

However, the right-hander may have taken a step back Thursday as he allowed five runs and a season-high 10 hits over five innings, not getting a decision in a 7-6 win over Minnesota. He struck out two after totaling 24 over his previous four outings.

Despite failing to live up to the hype in his big league debut, prized prospect Kevin Gausman appears to be headed in the right direction.

Hoping to deliver a better performance, Gausman and the visiting Baltimore Orioles face a Washington Nationals team that is likely to be without Bryce Harper again Tuesday night.

Selected No. 4 overall in the 2012 draft, Gausman (0-1, 7.20 ERA) compiled a 3.11 ERA while striking out 49 and walking five over eight starts spanning 46 1-3 innings with Double-A Bowie this season. The 22-year-old right-hander, though, had a rough go Thursday after being called up, allowing four runs and seven hits over five innings in a 12-6 loss at Toronto.

"Definitely a learning experience for me, but it was awesome," he told MLB's official website. "It was everything I could have imagined and more. I've been waiting my entire life for this. I haven't been able to sleep very much lately. That was something that was kind of great to get out of the way."

Despite a lackluster line, Gausman, who hit as high as 99 mph on the stadium gun, received high praise from Blue Jays manager John Gibbons.

"He had some good composure. It looked like he belonged out there," Gibbons said. "For a debut, I thought he did a heck of a job. It looks like he'll have a bright future - he's got a great arm."

Hoping to build on last week's effort, Gausman is eager to get back on the mound.

"There is a big difference between Double-A and the big leagues with how smart hitters are," he said. "I feel like my stuff played here at this level. I'm just trying to get better every time I go out there. I feel good, I feel healthy and everything is coming out of my hand really well."

Gausman could catch a break with Harper expected to be held out for a second consecutive day. Leading the Nationals with 12 homers, Harper missed Monday's 6-2 loss due to bursitis in his left knee.

That defeat was the sixth in nine games for Washington (26-25), which had no answer for Baltimore's red-hot bats. Yamaico Navarro and Nick Markakis both drove in a pair of runs, and Manny Machado collected three more hits as the Orioles (28-23) posted their fifth win in seven games.

"I can't tell you how proud I am of everybody," said manager Buck Showalter, whose club lost the previous day to Toronto after blowing a three-run, ninth-inning lead.

Tied with Detroit's Miguel Cabrera for the major league lead with 75 hits, Machado has batted .450 in his last 17 road contests with three homers, 16 runs and 11 RBIs. He's hit safely in 28 of 33 overall, posting 18 multihit efforts.

Losers in six of eight versus Baltimore, the Nationals try to regroup behind 25-year-old Nate Karns after placing scheduled starter Ross Detwiler on the disabled list.

Getting called up from Double-A Harrisburg for his big league debut, Karns has gone 4-2 with a 4.60 ERA over nine starts this year while striking out 55 in 45 innings.

Besides being cautious with Machado, Karns will need to be wary of Markakis and Adam Jones. Batting .377 with two homers and 11 RBIs during a 12-game hitting streak, Markakis is hitting .391 in his last 15 games against the Nationals. Jones, who had two hits but saw his career-high four-game home run streak snapped Monday, is a career .384 hitter versus Washington.

The Orioles and Nationals play two more games in Baltimore following this contest.

It didn't take long for the Cincinnati Reds' Shin-Soo Choo to have an impact against his former team.

Choo and the surging Reds try to hand the Cleveland Indians a season worst-tying fifth consecutive loss as these Ohio rivals meet again Tuesday night in Cincinnati.

Acquired from Cleveland (27-23) in a three-team trade this offseason, Choo led off the bottom of the first inning with his team-leading 10th homer then scored on Joey Votto's tiebeaking two-run shot in the eighth during Monday's 4-2 win. Choo, who entered the day mired in a 1-for-21 slump, raised his average back up to .290.

Votto is batting .448 with five homers, 18 runs and 12 RBIs over his last 15 games. He's also hitting .325 with eight home runs and 19 RBIs in his last 13 home matchups against the Indians.

"Whether he's frustrated or had two bad at_bats previous to his last at-bat, you never count that guy out," Monday's starter Mike Leake told MLB's official website.

While Cincinnati (32-19) has won six off seven and 13 of its last 16, the Indians have been going in the opposite direction.

Cleveland has dropped six of seven, including its last four by a 25-12 margin. Carlos Santana has two hits in 14 at_bats over that stretch and Michael Bourn is 2 for 12. Drew Stubbs, acquired in the Choo trade, singled Monday but is 4 for his last 26.

"This is a little bit of a tough stretch," manager Terry Francona said. "We're getting tested, and we're going to figure it out. We're going to battle through it."

The Indians, who dropped five straight April 14-19, have been outscored 35-16 during a five-game losing streak in Cincinnati. These clubs play two more games in Cleveland following Tuesday's contest.

The Indians will try to get back on track behind Zach McAllister (4-3, 2.89 ERA), who's yielded three earned runs or fewer in all nine of his outings. He surrendered three and five hits over five innings Thursday in a 12-3 victory at Boston.

Cleveland has won each of McAllister's last five starts, during which he's gone 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA. The right-hander, though, owns a 3.97 road ERA - nearly two runs higher than his 2.16 mark at home. He'll be making his first appearance versus Cincinnati.

The Reds give the ball to Mat Latos (4-0, 3.17), who didn't factor in the decision of Wednesday's 7-4 road win over the New York Mets. The right-hander allowed two runs over six innings before giving up two more in the seventh.

"Latos was very good," manager Dusty Baker said. "We just have to get him over that hump at kind of the same time in the game. Some kind of way, adverse things happened around the seventh (inning) or that 100-pitch mark."

Latos posted mixed results in two starts versus Cleveland last year. After scattering seven hits over seven innings of two-run ball in a 5-3 win June 13, he was tagged for seven runs over four innings during a 10-9 road loss five days later.

While things remained calm after Reds closer Aroldis Chapman threw two 100 mph fastballs up around Nick Swisher's head Monday, the umpiring crew will surely be keeping a close eye on things in this game.

"I've talked to Chapman plenty of times, and he's a great kid," Jason Giambi said after hitting a pinch-hit homer. "But we're going to protect our guys, too, especially Nick, who's a big leader on this ballclub."

The Miami Marlins had their best offensive performance in over three weeks, but they still failed to improve upon the majors' worst record.

Fresh off his best start of the season, Jeremy Hellickson aims to extend the Marlins' struggles.

Hellickson gets the nod for the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday night when they host Miami at Tropicana Field.

The Rays (26-24) won their second straight with a 10-6 victory in the opener Monday, powered by Kelly Johnson's big day. Johnson, who has a .724 slugging percentage in May, connected for two three-run homers while also doubling and singling to give him 24 RBIs in 21 games this month.

"I feel good and I feel confident," Johnson said. "You're always searching for something that's going to let you feel confident and you try to just roll with it. It could be daily, weekly. That's the way baseball is. I'm not going to sit here and try to figure it out."

The right-handed Hellickson (2-2, 5.37 ERA) had endured struggles of his own, yielding 26 runs over 30 innings in a span of five starts from April 25-May 17. That slump was capped by getting tagged for a career-worst eight runs and 10 hits in a 12-10 loss to the Orioles.

He responded by going a season-best eight innings while yielding two runs and four hits against Toronto on Wednesday. But his record stayed at 2-2 as Fernando Rodney's blown save spoiled his performance in a 4-3 loss.

"He did really well," manager Joe Maddon said. "That was more like Helly tonight."

After a sixth straight loss, the Marlins (13-38) appear to be a prime opponent for Hellickson to keep things rolling. Miami managed only 34 runs while losing 15 of 18 prior to Monday's loss, which saw their highest run total since May 5. It marked just the third time in the last 19 games the club has tallied more than three runs.

After a scare his last time out, Kevin Slowey (1-5, 3.30 ERA) will be able to make his scheduled start for the Marlins. He left after five innings against Philadelphia due to a strained lat muscle, but he told the team's official website he felt no pain after a bullpen session in Chicago on Saturday.

"You want to be healthy as often as you can, and sometimes you can't control it," Slowey said. "But it doesn't mean you don't worry about it. You're like, 'I'd really like this to be minor,' and luckily it was."

Before having his start cut short, Slowey had surrendered one run and six hits, looking much better than his previous two outings when he gave up 11 runs over only 3 2-3 innings. He's 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two starts against Tampa Bay, though Evan Longoria, Matt Joyce and Yunel Escobar are a combined 3 for 20 off of him.

Ben Zobrist, who was 1 for 3 with an RBI and three runs Monday, is 16 for 35 with an OPS of 1.365 and nine runs driven in over his last 10 games against the Marlins.

Tampa Bay's victory Monday evened the all-time series at 43 wins each.

                              Game: 2
                              Venue: U.S. Cellular Field

Chris Sale is healthy and riding an extended scoreless streak, but the Chicago White Sox were the ones unable to get on the scoreboard in the Crosstown Cup opener.

Edwin Jackson surely wouldn't mind if the Chicago Cubs' lineup stayed hot as he opposes Sale on Tuesday night at U.S. Cellular Field.

Sale (5-2, 2.53 ERA) missed Wednesday's scheduled start due to mild tendinitis in his throwing shoulder and the White Sox (24-25) lost 6-2 to Boston. He threw a bullpen session Sunday without incident and seemed fully recovered.

The left-hander, 4-0 with a 1.18 ERA in his last five starts, hasn't allowed a run in 23 straight innings, and his six-start streak of lasting at least seven while allowing fewer than three earned runs is the longest by a White Sox starter since Mark Buehrle's seven-start run in 2007.

Sale has never started against the Cubs and hasn't faced them since 2011, when he pitched two scoreless innings of relief over two appearances.

The Cubs (20-30), though, have put together back-to-back solid offensive performances. They beat Cincinnati 5-4 in 10 innings Sunday to end their six-game losing streak, then cruised past the White Sox 7-0 on Monday.

Alfonso Soriano went 3 for 4 with two RBIs while Anthony Rizzo doubled and added a two-run triple. Soriano is hitting .344 over his last 16 road games versus the White Sox.

Jeff Samardzija threw a two-hitter Monday for the Cubs' first shutout of the season, and the offense gave him plenty of support after averaging 2.5 runs during the skid.

"Pitch deep into games and give your offense a chance to win the game," Samardzija said. "We saw what happened tonight."

Jackson (1-7, 6.11), though, didn't last long in his most recent start and has received two or fewer runs of support six times. He could use the offensive help, especially given his struggles after allowing four runs in a season-low three innings of a 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh on Thursday.

``I think at times he tries too hard to justify his contract and overthrows,' manager Dale Sveum said. ``I think he needs to relax and just be Edwin Jackson, the guy we liked enough to sign.

"He seems like he doesn't come out with a lot of conviction early in games.'

The right-hander spent parts of 2010 and '11 with the White Sox, going 11-9 with a 3.36 ERA in 30 starts. He's 1-1 with a 2.56 ERA in his last five outings at U.S. Cellular Field.

Monday's loss ended a three-game win streak for the White Sox, who have scored an AL-worst 177 runs and also are last in the league hitting .239.

They've finished with five hits or fewer 11 times this season. Adam Dunn went hitless and is 1 for 22 over his last six games.

``Again, I don't know if it was the pitcher who made us flat, but there was enough of a lack of focus that needs to be there,' manager Robin Ventura said.

The Cubs have won three of the last four meetings on the South Side. This series shifts to Wrigley Field on Wednesday for the final two games of the Crosstown Cup, which is awarded the season series' winner each year.

There could be an opportunity for Tyler Lyons to make a case for a permanent place in the St. Louis Cardinals' injury-plagued rotation.

Lyons had a solid debut in his last outing and will face a Kansas City Royals team that is one defeat shy of a franchise-record home losing streak entering Tuesday night's contest.

St. Louis (33-17) has lost Jaime Garcia for the year, and Jake Westbrook and John Gast are currently on the disabled list.

That's why the 25-year-old Lyons (1-0, 1.29 ERA) had his contract purchased from Triple-A Memphis for his debut last Wednesday in a 5-3 win at San Diego. He yielded one run over seven innings and also singled once in three at_bats.

"I pitched well, I got a hit and we won the ballgame," Lyons said. "It doesn't get much better than that."

Known for his sinker, Lyons went 2-1 with a 4.47 ERA in eight starts at Memphis. He could cause problems for Kansas City (21-27), which is 4-10 against left-handed starters.

St. Louis has won six straight on the road in the I-70 Series after Monday's 6-3 victory and is a major league-best 19-9 on the road this season. Yadier Molina homered and drove in four runs, improving to 10 for 16 in his last five games.

``We're playing good,' Molina said. ``We've got some good offense. Right now, we're seeing the ball pretty good. We're finding some holes. We're showing the people we've got a pretty good team. Hopefully we can continue to do that for the rest of the season.'

Allen Craig added three hits and his team-high 36th RBI. Craig is 14 for 35 with nine RBIS in nine games against the Royals.

Kansas City has lost six straight, 17 of 21 overall and will try to avoid matching the home losing streak set last season when it began 0-10 at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals last dropped seven straight during a 12-game slide April 11-24, 2012.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny used former Royals slugger Carlos Beltran as his designated hitter Monday. Beltran got the day off Sunday due to shoulder soreness.

Matt Holliday, hitless in his last 11 at_bats, got Monday off. He's one of two available Cardinals who have faced Royals starter Ervin Santana (3-4, 3.14), going 2 for 6.

Santana, seeking his 100th career victory, is winless in four starts and has posted a 4.71 ERA in losing his last three after giving up five runs over 7 2-3 innings in Thursday's 5-4 home defeat to the Angels.

The right-hander will be hoping that the Royals can get untracked after totaling 12 runs during their longest losing streak of the year.

Third baseman Mike Moustakas will likely miss a second straight game with a bruised quad. Manager Ned Yost said that the infielder is feeling better but will likely choose to rest the lefty-swinging Moustakas against Lyons.

Designated hitter Billy Butler has gone nine straight games without an RBI, going 7 for 29 with no extra-base hits in that span.

Alex Gordon moved past Butler for the team lead Monday with his 31st RBI, but he has just three in his last 14 games despite hitting .389 in that stretch.
