  • Preview: Cubs (18-26) at Pirates (27-18)

    Game: 2
    Venue: PNC Park
    Date: May 22, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

Pitching has been vital to the Pittsburgh Pirates' recent surge, but improvement from the offense may be more important to beating Chicago Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija for the first time.

Francisco Liriano will try to keep the Pirates cruising on the mound as they attempt to finally solve Samardzija on Wednesday night.

Pittsburgh is 9-2 over its last 11 games thanks in large part to a 2.34 ERA while limiting opponents to a .223 average.

The offense is also showing signs of improvement, batting .255 over that span - 10 points higher than the team's season mark.

A big at-bat kept the Pirates (27-18) surging in the opener of this three-game series Tuesday. Travis Snider connected for a pinch-hit grand slam during a five-run sixth inning to power a 5-4 win.

Pittsburgh won for the fourth time in 11 meetings with the Cubs, batting .206 and averaging 3.7 runs over that stretch.

Part of those troubles have come against Samardzija (2-5, 3.49 ERA), who has dominated the Pirates - especially at PNC Park.

The right-hander is 4-0 with a 0.92 ERA in 14 games - three starts - against them. All of the wins - including the three starts - have come in his last four visits to Pittsburgh, compiling a 0.69 ERA.

Samardzija was superb there on opening day, striking out nine and allowing two hits in eight shutout innings of a 3-1 win April 1. However, he hadn't won again until last Wednesday, when he allowed two runs in eight innings of a 6-3 victory over Colorado.

He helped himself with a two-run homer in the second.

"He's a velocity guy who can get carried away with trying to blow people away," manager Dale Sveum told the team's official website. "He's learning the hard way and understanding, 'I still better locate my fastball.' He's going to give up the hanging split (sometimes) - that's just the way that goes with a power split, you're not going to throw every one of them to the earth, you are going to hang them sometime.

"That game against Pittsburgh on opening day, he pitched inside incredibly, and we have to get back to pitching to both sides of the plate and not letting guys get comfortable."

Location has been key for Liriano, who has gone 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his first two starts with the Pirates after opening the season on the disabled list while recovering from a broken right arm.

The left-hander's latest effort included seven strikeouts while yielding one run in 5 2-3 innings of a 7-1 victory over Milwaukee in his home debut Thursday.

"I just try to stay calm, not try to do too much, hit my spot and just focus on location," Liriano said. "Pitching is all about location. I'm locating my fastball a lot better and my slider is working for me so far."

Liriano suffered an 8-2 defeat with Minnesota in his only start against the Cubs on June 10, 2012. He gave up four runs and three walks while striking out six in 5 2-3 innings.

Andrew McCutchen had one of the hits off Samardzija on opening day, but he's 2 for 8 with five strikeouts against him dating to last year.

The star center fielder went 0 for 4 in the series opener after missing a game with knee soreness. He was 7 for 14 with five runs over his three previous contests.

    • Preview: Phillies (22-24) at Marlins (13-33)

      Game: 3
      Venue: Marlins Park
      Date: May 22, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

After avoiding a fourth straight loss to the major league-worst Miami Marlins, the Philadelphia Phillies appear to have a good opportunity to win the series with Cliff Lee on the mound.

Lee will attempt to win his third straight decision and lead the Phillies to their fourth straight series victory in Miami on Wednesday night.

Following a two-game absence due to a sore knee, Ryan Howard showed no ill-effects with three hits and three RBIs to help Philadelphia (22-24) end its skid against the Marlins (13-33) with a 7-3 victory Tuesday.

Ben Revere added three hits and Delmon Young hit his first homer in 17 games as the Phillies won for the sixth time in nine contests.

"Hopefully we can carry this over the rest of this road trip because we're going to need to score runs the rest of this road trip to win ballgames," Young said.

Philadelphia now turns to Lee (4-2, 2.83 ERA) as it looks to wrap up the first stop on an eight-game road swing in positive fashion.

Since going 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA during a three-start stretch, the three-time All-Star is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA over his last three outings - all Philadelphia victories.

Lee struck out seven and surrendered two runs over seven innings before leaving without a decision in a 5-3 victory over Cincinnati on Friday.

The left-hander has yielded three runs or less in seven of eight career starts against the Marlins, going 3-1 with a 2.68 ERA.

This time, he faces a Miami team that ranks last in the majors in several offensive categories, including runs (125), batting average (.224) and home runs (23).

The Marlins, though, will try to finish with 10 or more hits in three straight games for the first time since April 5-7. Former Phillie Placido Polanco has done some of the damage, going 4 for 8 in the first two games of this series.

Scheduled Miami starter Kevin Slowey (1-4, 3.44) has struggled since snapping his winless streak at 22 appearances in a 14-2 victory at Philadelphia on May 5.

The right-hander gave up six runs and seven hits - three homers - over three innings in a 9-2 loss to Arizona on Friday, leaving him with a 12.91 ERA in his last two starts after posting a 1.81 ERA in his first seven.

"It was the second time in a week that I haven't given my team a chance to win and that's disappointing," Slowey said.

Slowey has struck out 11 and yielded one run over 12 1-3 innings in two starts against the Phillies this season.

Howard is 9 for 17 with four doubles at Marlins Park this season, and Jimmy Rollins is 5 for 11 in his last three games against the Marlins.

Chase Utley, who is 1 for 7 lifetime against Slowey, could be sidelined for the second straight game after feeling discomfort in his right side during batting practice Tuesday.

"When he took a swing, he kind of felt a burn, a pain, in his rib cage," manager Charlie Manuel said.

The Phillies are also expected to be without catcher Carlos Ruiz for at least three weeks due to a strained hamstring.

      • Preview: Red Sox (27-19) at White Sox (21-23)

        Game: 3
        Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
        Date: May 22, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

Wednesday night's game between the Chicago White Sox and visiting Boston Red Sox was scheduled to be a potential duel between two of this season's most successful starting pitchers.

Instead, Chicago will send Hector Santiago to the mound in place of the injured Chris Sale to oppose Clay Buchholz as it goes for its first series sweep of the season.

Sale, 4-0 with a 1.18 ERA in his last five starts, hasn't allowed a run in 23 straight innings, and his six-start streak of lasting at least seven while allowing fewer than three earned runs is the longest by a White Sox starter since Mark Buehrle's seven-start run in 2007.

Chicago announced Tuesday, though, that the left-hander had been scratched from this start due to mild tendinitis in his shoulder.

Santiago (1-2, 2.78 ERA) will take the hill in Sale's place. He has gone 1-1 with a 2.95 ERA in four starts since making his first May 2, but he walked four and gave up three runs in 3 1-3 innings of Chicago's 12-9 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.

He said he noticed his high pitch count in the fourth before being removed.

"I'm never like that. I go inning by inning. If I go five, if I go seven, it doesn't matter," Santiago said. "(I'm) just trying to make better pitches."

The only time Santiago, who has yet to make a start at home this season, has faced Boston was July 18, when he allowed two runs in three innings of relief in Chicago's 10-1 loss.

He seeks a better performance this time around for the White Sox (21-23), who have won six of nine after Jose Quintana took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of Tuesday's 3-1 victory. David Ortiz's one-out single in the seventh marked the Red Sox's first hit.

"Our starting pitching's really good," said Jeff Keppinger, who hit a two-run homer. "Every game, we're in it. It's just a matter of if we can get that big hit."

Alex Rios went 2 for 4 with an RBI double and is batting .391 during a career-best 16-game hitting streak. Rios, though, is 2 for 13 off Buchholz, who seeks his first victory in four outings.

Buchholz (6-0, 1.78) won his first six starts behind a 1.01 ERA, but he's posted a 3.43 ERA over his last three. He struck out nine and gave up two runs in seven innings of a 3-2, 10-inning win over Minnesota on Friday, marking the sixth time he's finished with at least eight strikeouts.

"Team wins. That's what this game's about. There's absolutely no disappointment (not earning a decision)," said Buchholz, whose ERA is best in the AL.

The right-hander also didn't pick up a victory despite a stellar start the last time he faced the White Sox, giving up one run in eight innings of a 3-1 win July 19. He's 1-1 with a 1.71 ERA over his last three outings against Chicago.

The Red Sox (27-19) have dropped the first two games of this set after winning five straight. Ortiz is 1 for 7 after entering the series batting .429 during a seven-game hitting streak.

Boston outfielder Shane Victorino didn't play Tuesday because of tightness in his left hamstring and is day to day.

The Red Sox have lost three straight road meetings with the White Sox after winning the previous five.

        • Preview: Royals (21-21) at Astros (13-33)

          Game: 3
          Venue: Minute Maid Park
          Date: May 22, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

The Kansas City Royals ended their longest losing streak of the season with a late rally.

Whether they can rally behind James Shields remains to be seen.

Despite his outstanding pitching this season, Shields will be trying to avoid losing his third consecutive start Wednesday night against the Houston Astros.

After dropping four straight one-run games, the Royals (21-21) scored all of their runs in the final three innings of a 7-3 victory Tuesday. The victory was just their fourth in 15 contests.

"Give the Royals a lot of credit. They battled their at_bats and put balls in play and had some really good at_bats late in the game," manager Bo Porter told the Astros' official website.

Kansas City has scored 15 runs in its last three contests, but it's managed four runs in dropping Shields' past three starts. The right-hander has posted a 1.50 ERA in that stretch - pitching eight innings each time - and a 2.00 ERA over his past six, going 1-2.

Shields gave up two runs and matched a season high with nine strikeouts in a 2-1 loss at Oakland on Friday.

"It's a tough loss right there. A real tough loss,' he said. "It was just a case of me not doing my job out there, whatever the score was.'

Shields (2-4, 2.45 ERA) hasn't lost three consecutive starts since a four-start stretch with Tampa Bay from June 29-July 16, 2011.

His last start before that skid was his only appearance against the Astros, a three-hitter in a 5-1 win at Houston.

The Astros (13-33), who opened this series with a 6-5 victory Monday, continue their eight-game homestand with Jordan Lyles (1-1, 6.63) set to take the hill.

The right-hander has made four starts since being called up May 2. He rebounded nicely Friday from an ugly outing, going five-plus innings and allowing two runs - one earned - in a 5-4 loss to Pittsburgh.

Lyles gave up eight runs and 11 hits in four innings of a 12-7 defeat to Texas on May 12.

"That first inning, I walked too many guys (two) and that's not what you want to see, but I bounced back," Lyles said after his latest outing.

He's faced the Royals once, throwing seven innings and giving up two runs in a 2-1 home loss June 20.

Alex Gordon, batting .514 during a nine-game hitting streak, is 1 for 3 with a triple off Lyles.

Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas, 1 for 3 with a double against Lyles, snapped an 0-for-18 skid Tuesday with a tying RBI single in the eighth inning.

"One hit is not going to ... completely turn anything around, but it's a big hit in a big situation and it gives me a lot of confidence going into tomorrow,' he said.

          • Preview: Cardinals (29-16) at Padres (21-24)

            Game: 3
            Venue: PETCO Park
            Date: May 22, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The San Diego Padres have had to deal with some of the best pitchers in the NL lately, though they don't appear to be facing as tough of a challenge in their series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Padres will try for their fourth win in five games when Tyler Lyons makes his major league debut for the visiting Cardinals on Wednesday night.

After beating Washington's Jordan Zimmermann on Saturday and St. Louis' Shelby Miller in the series opener Monday, San Diego (21-24) finally met its match in a 10-2 loss against Adam Wainwright on Tuesday.

"They've still got some big hitters over there, though, so you never can get too comfortable if they've got a lineup with some guys who can do some damage," Wainwright said.

The Cardinals (29-16) snapped a four-game losing streak to the Padres, limiting them to one extra-base hit after San Diego had 10 during its three-game winning streak.

The Padres' Jedd Gyorko went 3 for 4 with his team-leading 12th double. Chris Denorfia has gone 8 for 17 while recording at least a hit in four consecutive games.

It's uncertain if teammate Carlos Quentin will play Wednesday after sitting out the last game with a balky right knee.

Although St. Louis' starters have a major league-best 2.64 ERA, they had posted a 5.08 ERA in the previous seven games before Wainwright's gem Tuesday.

Due to injuries to Jake Westbrook and Jaime Garcia, Lyons gets his chance after the left-hander went 2-1 with a 4.47 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A Memphis.

"We talked about everything,' St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "Lyons is the right guy right now."

Burch Smith (0-0, 15.63 ERA) hasn't been able to take advantage of a similar opportunity with the Padres, and his spot appears tenuous with Clayton Richard expected to rejoin the rotation soon.

Making his second career start, the right-hander gave up five runs and six hits - three home runs - over 5 1-3 innings of a 6-5 loss to Washington on Friday.

It was an improvement over his debut, in which Smith allowed six runs in one-plus innings of an 8-7 road loss to Tampa Bay on May 11.

Smith will face a St. Louis team that may be without third baseman David Freese for a third straight game after he was spiked in the thumb Sunday.

Daniel Descalso filled in nicely Tuesday, delivering his first grand slam and recording three hits and a career-high five RBIs. He had batted .161 over his previous 26 games.

Carlos Beltran went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and is 8 for 18 in his last four road games, while Allen Craig is 8 for 19 in his last five overall.

The Padres will be trying to wrap up their seven-game homestand with a winning record.

MLB Top 3: Best home/away total bets in baseball
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watching the winds at Wrigley Field is always on top of a baseball bettor’s to-do list. And so far this season, those Windy City gusts have helped total bettors go 14-10 over/under when capping the Chicago Cubs’ home stands.

That may not seem like a huge windfall for over backers, until you compare it to the Cubs’ over/under count on the road. Chicago is 6-13 over/under away from the north side, heading into Tuesday’s game at Pittsburgh. The Cubbies play over 58 percent of the time at home but just 32 percent on the road.

Chicago isn’t the only club with decisively different over/under counts at home and away. Here are three other MLB teams presenting value to total bettors depending on the scenery:

                        Atlanta Braves (8-10 O/U home, 16-9-1 O/U away)

The Braves pitching has defended the House That Ted Built with an MLB best 2.43 ERA at home while posting a 4.06 ERA on the road – a difference of 1.63 runs. Atlanta is 1-3 over/under to start its current six-game home stand.

                        Pittsburgh Pirates (7-16-1 O/U home, 13-7 O/U away)

Bucs’ ace A.J. Burnett is a different man inside PNC Park. Last season, he went 8-6 with a 3.10 ERA at home, where the Pirates finished 5-12 over/under in his 17 starts. Burnett is 2-3 with a 2.51 ERA in seven home starts in 2013. Pittsburgh is 1-6 over/under in those home appearances.

                        Philadelphia Phillies (14-8-1 O/U home, 7-15 O/U away)

Outside of Wrigley Field, Citizens Bank Park is perhaps the ultimate example of how much ballparks can make a difference. The Phillies’ crumbling lineup is having a tough time scoring, ranked 27th in runs per game, averaging four runs at home compared to just 2.95 on the road. Citizens Bank Park ranks as the second-best hitters park in the majors this season (behind Wrigley).
