Preview: Rockies (16-11) at Dodgers (13-13)

    Game: 3
    Venue: Dodger Stadium
    Date: May 01, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

After Hanley Ramirez provided a boost in his return, the Los Angeles Dodgers hope Josh Beckett can do the same while avoiding a career-worst season-opening winless drought.

Beckett again looks to pick up his elusive first win on Wednesday night when the Dodgers try to take two of three at home from the NL West-leading Colorado Rockies.

In his first start of the season, Ramirez made an instant impact by going 2 for 4 with a home run and a double to help Los Angeles (13-13) cruise to a 6-2 win on Tuesday.

Ramirez started at shortstop after opening the season on the disabled list with a torn ligament in his right thumb suffered during the championship game of the World Baseball Classic. He improved his batting average to .365 over his last 14 meetings with the Rockies.

The Dodgers will try to finish with a 4-2 homestand while picking up another game on the Rockies (16-11) in the series finale.

After allowing nine runs in 19 1-3 innings over his first three outings, Beckett (0-3, 4.75 ERA) has given up that many in 11 innings in his last two. The right-hander has also allowed eight home runs, which ranks among the most in the majors.

Beckett will try to avoid going winless through his first six starts for the first time in his 13-year career.

"He's throwing the ball great and he's kept us in games,' first baseman Adrian Gonzalez said. "We just haven't been able to get those extra runs to get him a W.'

Beckett is 6-2 with a 3.40 ERA in nine career starts against the Rockies, including a 13-1 win in Game 1 of the 2007 World Series while with Boston. He surrendered just one run and six hits over six innings in a 7-1 win over Colorado last September.

Beckett may have to deal with Troy Tulowitzki, who is expected to play after missing his second straight game with a shoulder injury.

The star shortstop has a .308 average with six homers and a team-high 22 RBIs, though he's just 2 for 16 with one RBI in his last four games at Chavez Ravine.

"I think I can talk them into making sure that I'm in there," he told the team's official website. "I can't handle watching any more games."

Carlos Gonzalez hit his first homer since April 16 on Tuesday and is 6 for 13 in the last three meetings.

Dexter Fowler is batting .400 (14 for 35) during a nine-game hitting streak that's raised his average to .305.

The Rockies, who fell to 2-4 on a seven-game road trip that concludes on Wednesday, look to regroup behind unbeaten right-hander Juan Nicasio.

Nicasio (3-0, 4.65 ERA) hasn't been able to go deep into games, but has allowed three earned runs and seven hits in 9 1-3 innings in his last two starts. He pitched well in his last appearance at Dodger Stadium, striking out nine and allowing one run over seven innings in a 2-1 loss on May 12.

Andre Ethier has hit Nicasio hard with seven hits - including a homer and a double - in 11 career at_bats, while Matt Kemp is 10 for 22 with four homers in his last six home games against the Rockies.

Carl Crawford (hamstring) was scratched from the lineup on Tuesday, but is likely to be back in left field.

The Dodgers have won five of six at home in this series.

        Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Congrats to Tim Hudson on win #200, 92 of which he got pitching for the A's. He'll be an interesting decision for the Hall of Fame someday.

-- Memphis won by 10 at Staples Center, grabs a 3-2 series lead over the Clippers, as they try to avenge LY's loss in seven games to LA.

-- New Mexico and Steve Alford are $800,000 apart on the buyout of his contract to go coach UCLA; this will wind up getting settled when UCLA gives the Lobos a couple of guaranteed-money football games, to make up the money Alford isn't going to pay them.

-- NCAA failed to come with anything on the old Lance Thomas/$67,000 jewelry case, so they closed it. Kid put down $30,000 for jewelry, owed the store another $67,000, never paid it, and everything's OK? By the way, Lance Thomas played for Duke, so everything must be cool.

-- NCAA is so annoyed by this story they're thinking of putting Coastal Carolina on probation for five years. The little guys always get pummeled.

-- College sports babbles about how much they hate gambling, but the new AAC may have their first conference tournament at Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. Go figure.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

        13) Late Monday night was filled with interesting baseball action; Mets went ahead of Miami in 15th inning because Marlins walked Ike Davis on purpose to face Ruben Tejada; Davis is hitting .159, Tejada .259.

According to retrosheet.org, which keeps a database of such things, neither hitter had faced Jon Rauch before, so why walk the befuddled Davis to pitch to Tejada, who already had two hits Monday?

Long story short, they walk Davis, then throw a wild pitch, then Tejada gets an infield hit and the Mets go ahead. Horrific managing, but Miami rallies for two in the ninth to win anyway, a weird end to an odd game—there were no more than a couple hundred people left in that beautiful new ballpark in Miami at game’s end.

        12) Monday’s game was supposed to be a Harvey-Fernandez showcase of two of baseball’s best young pitchers, but the two combined to throw 202 pitches while lasting a combined 9.1 innings- not very good. Harvey threw 5.04 pitches per batter, and had 35 balls fouled off, a ridiculously high number. Fernandez threw 4.76 pitches/hitter and was lifted after four IP, allowing two runs. These two have plenty of better days ahead of them.

        11) Out in Oakland, Angels led 7-2 in 8th inning, before things got bizarre. The A’s tied the game in the 9th (Cespedes is the A’s version of Kelly Leak from The Bad News Bears), fell behind in the 12th, tied it again (Rosales with a huge hit), then finally won the game at 4:41 ET when Brandon Moss homered in the 19th off a guy named Enright who used to pitch for Arizona.

Longest game in history for both Angels and A’s. For a minute, thought I was going to have to call in late to work to watch the end of the game.

        10) Weirdest part of the A’s game was that Brett Anderson was scratched from the start (ankle) but wound up throwing 5.1 innings in relief, before he re-injured the ankle and had to leave in the 18th inning.

As much fun as winning these close games is, there is a huge red flag for Oakland: if their starting pitching doesn’t revert back to LY’s strong level, they’re going to fall apart this summer, because too much strain is being placed on their fine bullpen. Its as simple as that.

Sunday/Monday was first time since 1941 the A’s won consecutive games, when they trailed by 5+ runs in both games.

        9) Injuries, injuries and more injuries; Stanton-Crisp-Bourjos-CYoung all got hurt running from home to first Monday night. Four starting OFs in one night, some of the better athletes in the game. Anderson re-injured his ankle when he turned to try and field a ball hit up the middle- he is always hurt. Baseball players are paper mache, its unbelievable.

        8) Phil Jackson has never run an NBA franchise and is 67, which makes the Raptors’ push to hire the Zen Master as Team President a little odd. Maybe they’re just looking for some free publicity before the NHL playoffs start. Maybe they're serious, which will be very expensive if they're wrong.

        7) While Creighton’s Doug McDermott will play another year for his father, Ray McCallum Jr is leaving his dad at U of Detroit and is bolting early for the NBA. Detroit never enjoyed the success that was expected once young McCallum committed to the Titans, but he is expected to be a good NBA player. Its a big hit to his dad's team.

        6) Baylor gets center Isaiah Austin back for another season because the big man hurt his shoulder and wouldn’t have been a first round NBA draft pick, so he smartly returned to school. Good break for Scott Drew.

        5) Luol Deng is 1-18 on 3-pointers in the Bulls-Nets playoff series; at what point do you stop shooting them? He is a career 33.4% shooter behind the arc who made 32.2% this year; I’m just asking.

        4) ESPN’s draft coverage got its best ratings in these three cities:
        New Orleans-Birmingham-Kansas City.

        3) Geno Smith already fired his agent? He got drafted four days ago!!! Smith has to wait five days before he can hire another agent. Hope he doesn’t hire the guy who advised Tyler Bray to leave school early.

        2) There are 347 Division I college hoop teams; this spring’s transfer list is already over 350 kids. Last year’s wound up over 450. The average transfer rate for all college students, athletes or not, is said to be around 33%.

        1) Oklahoma City owner Clay Bennett is head of the NBA’s relocation committee; he is the guy who stole the Sonics from Seattle, which makes you wonder how much of a shot Seattle had in the first place, as far as getting the Kings to leave Sacramento for the Pacific Northwest.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

          Lookahead spot

          Mets not mindful of Marlins

The New York Mets may be in an extended lookahead spot after starting the season with a bang, but it’s come to a head with the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves on deck following a three-game set with the lowly Miami Marlins this week.

New York jumped out to a 7-4 start to the year but has gone just 3-10 since, even suffering a 4-3 loss to Miami on Monday. The Mets may have been getting ahead of themselves, sitting behind the Braves in the standings before plummeting to fourth in the division. With the series in Atlanta starting Friday, New York runs the risk of looking past the floundering Fish, who are getting solid underdog value at home.

          Letdown spot

          Leafs’ postseason letdown

A lot has changed since the Toronto Maple Leafs last made a postseason appearance. The year was 2004. Spider-Man 2 was a hit at theaters, Lance Armstrong was cheating his way to a sixth Tour de France title and George W. Bush was settling into his second term as President of the United States. Nine years of frustration are pouring into Wednesday’s playoff opener versus the Boston Bruins and Toronto may be happy just to be still playing.

Teams generally hold the sticks a little tighter in Game 1 of the postseason and aren’t quite themselves when playing under the playoff pressure. Now double those expectations for the Leafs, whose rabid fan base and cut-throat media coverage have been waiting nearly a decade for this. On the other side of the rink, Boston is playoff savvy and won’t be shaken by the switch in intensity.

          Scheduling spot

          Red Wings' cross-country tour

The Detroit Red Wings finished No. 7 in the Western Conference and therefore must make a cross-country trek to California to play the No. 2 Anaheim Ducks in the opening two games of their first-round series, starting Tuesday. The Wings don’t plan on making many adjustments to deal with the three-hour time difference and goalie Jimmy Howard told the media all the team needs is a good night’s sleep.

Detroit went 9-5-1 versus Pacific teams overall, including back-to-back road wins over Anaheim in March, and was 11-9-2-2 on the road. The Ducks boast a 16-7-1-0 record inside the Honda Center – the fourth-best home record in the West. The teams play Tuesday and Thursday in Anaheim before coming back to Detroit Saturday and Monday.

                  Wednesday, May 1

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Four Wednesday starters with a combined 13-2-2 over record
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any bettor that wagered $100 on the over on each of these pitcher's 17 starts would be up $1,033.19.

Here's a look at four pitchers starting on Wednesday that have a combined 13-2-2 over record:

                  Erik Bedard, Houston Astros (0-2, 7.98 ERA, 3-0-1 O/U as a starter)

In Bedard's last three starts, he has given up 13 earned runs in only 7 1/3 innings, while serving up five home runs.

                  Anibal Sanchez, Detroit Tigers (3-1, 1.34 ERA, 4-1 O/U)

The Tigers have scored 7, 10 and 10 runs in three of Sanchez's starts. Octavio Dotel melted down in the other over game after Sanchez gave up only two earned runs through 6 2/3 innings. Detroit averages 4.96 runs per game offensively, fifth in baseball.

                  Aaron Harang, Seattle Mariners (0-3, 11.37 ERA, 3-0 O/U)

Harang has been blasted since returning to the American League for the first time since 2003. He hasn't made it to the sixth inning, has given up six home runs and 16 earned runs in his three starts.

                  Juan Nicasio, Colorado Rockies (3-0, 4.62 ERA, 3-1-1 O/U)

The Rockies have scored an average of 6.2 runs a game when Nicasio has been on the hill, better than the team's 5.35 runs per game average. Along with Nicasio not making it to seventh inning once and giving up an average of a home run a game, the scoreboard lights up with Nicasio pitching.

Preview: Rays (12-15) at Royals (15-10)

                        Game: 3
                        Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
                        Date: May 02, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

After their comeback win put them back atop the AL Central, the Kansas City Royals have to be feeling good about staying there behind right-hander Ervin Santana.

The Royals send their hottest pitcher to the hill Thursday when they try for a three-game sweep and eighth win in nine home meetings against the road-weary Tampa Bay Rays.

Kansas City (15-10) fell into a 5-0 hole Wednesday and appeared to be on its way to a third loss in four games, but closed the deficit to 5-4 before scoring five times in the sixth inning for a 9-6 lead.

Lorenzo Cain and Jeff Francoeur provided the key hits during that sixth-inning rally and the Royals held on for a 9-8 victory that moved them back atop the Central.

"It looked like we were behind the eight-ball,' said designated hitter Billy Butler, who is batting .345 with five homers and 14 RBIs in 22 home games against the Rays, "but we just stayed within ourselves and kept pecking away.'

The Royals look to carry over their momentum as they go for their first sweep since taking three in a row from Minnesota in their first home series.

Since losing his debut with the Royals, Santana (3-1, 2.00 ERA) has been outstanding with a 3-0 record and a 1.20 ERA over his last four starts - all Kansas City victories.

The right-hander put together his best outing Saturday when he allowed six singles over seven shutout innings in a 3-2 win over Cleveland.

"He's been pretty electric,' first baseman Eric Hosmer said.

Santana, though, hasn't fared nearly as well in 13 starts against the Rays, going 5-6 with a 5.47 ERA. He's allowed 15 runs and seven homers over his last 16 1-3 innings versus Tampa Bay.

It's not likely to be any easier this time against the Rays (12-15), who have totaled 28 runs and batted .314 with eight home runs in the last four games.

Tampa Bay, however, fell to 2-4 on its 10-game trip and has lost 11 of 15 on the road overall.

"We actually did a lot of things well, another good offensive night,' manager Joe Maddon said. "For the pitching to come apart is really unusual for us.'

Evan Longoria, who went 3 for 5 with a double and triple Wednesday, is 5 for 12 with a pair of homers against Santana.

In only his second start due to a calf injury, Luke Scott had three hits - including his first home run. He's also 8 for 21 with two doubles and two homers in this matchup.

James Loney is also swinging a hot bat, going 11 for 23 over his last five contests.

Tampa Bay's Roberto Hernandez (1-4, 5.28) will try to bounce back after falling to 0-3 with a 6.50 ERA in three road starts with a 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Friday. The right-hander allowed five runs and a career-worst three homers over six innings.

"I tried to keep the ball down to get a ground ball but I couldn't get the ground ball,' said Hernandez, who is 2-2 with a 5.92 ERA in seven career starts in Kansas City.

Alex Gordon has given Hernandez trouble throughout his career with 15 hits - including a homer and four doubles - in 31 at_bats.

Preview: Padres (10-17) at Cubs (11-16)

                          Game: 4
                          Venue: Wrigley Field
                          Date: May 02, 2013 2:20 PM EDT

The Chicago Cubs are putting together a strong stretch at Wrigley Field.

Starlin Castro has been impressive there all season.

Castro attempts to continue his offensive barrage at home Thursday, when the Cubs try to take this four-game set from the San Diego Padres.

Chicago (11-16) is hitting .237 while averaging 3.6 runs on the season. However, the Cubs have been much better in winning three of four at home, batting .316 with eight homers and 6.0 runs per game.

They had dropped five of their previous seven as hosts.

Castro, a two-time All-Star, has been their best hitter at Wrigley, compiling a .367 average with four doubles, three homers, one triple, eight RBIs and nine runs. He has hit safely in every home game.

The shortstop has a homer among his five hits in this series along with three RBIs and four runs. He's 10 for 26 with two homers, seven RBIs and seven runs over his last six home meetings with the Padres (10-17), and he was at it again in Wednesday's 6-2 win.

Castro had two hits with two runs while plating a run as the Cubs won for the seventh time in nine tries at home versus San Diego.

Travis Wood (2-1, 2.25 ERA) has been arguably Chicago's most reliable starter, but he may appreciate some help from the offense since he's been backed by seven total runs over five starts.

The left-hander has done his part over the last four, yielding two earned runs while completing at least six innings in each outing.

He was solid again Saturday, giving up two runs on a pair of homers in six innings of a 3-2 win at Miami.

Wood hasn't been very good in five games - four starts - against the Padres, going 0-1 with a 4.21 ERA, and he was hit hard in the only matchup at Wrigley on May 28. He surrendered six runs and four homers with three walks in five innings while not getting a decision in an 11-7 win.

Wood has also struggled against Chase Headley, who is 6 for 12 with two homers off him.

The third baseman also seems to enjoy visiting the North Side, hitting .400 with three homers and five RBIs in the last six games there.

He's 8 for 17 with three doubles, two homers and three RBIs over his past four games overall.

Will Venable is mired in an 0-for-18 slump over the past eight games, but both of his hits in seven at_bats versus Wood were homers.

Rookie Jedd Gyorko will face Wood for the first time, and he's batting .324 over the past nine games after connecting for his first career homer Wednesday.

"I was glad to get it over with," Gyorko said of the solo shot. "Hopefully it doesn't take another 100 at_bats to get my next one."

Eric Stults (2-2, 5.67) is expected to take the mound, and he's lost all three starts at Wrigley Field with a 7.24 ERA.

The left-hander, however, scattered five hits with five strikeouts in 5 1-3 innings of a 2-0 home victory in his most recent start against the Cubs on Aug. 6.

Stults hasn't come close to being that sharp of late, surrendering 10 runs in 11 innings while going 0-1 over his last two starts.

Preview: Red Sox (19-8) at Blue Jays (10-18)

                            Game: 3
                            Venue: Rogers Centre
                            Date: May 02, 2013 7:07 PM EDT

Finally getting some run support, Ryan Dempster picked up his first win in a Boston Red Sox uniform.

The veteran right-hander could be in line for another if the MLB-leading Red Sox can continue their power surge versus the Blue Jays.

Dempster, a native of British Columbia, will make his first start in Toronto and first in Canada in a decade on Thursday night when Boston goes for its fourth consecutive series win.

Signed to a two-year deal in the offseason, Dempster (1-2, 3.30 ERA) went 0-2 through his first four starts with the Red Sox (19-8) totaling 12 runs in those contests. It was a different story on Friday, when Boston pounded out nine extra-base hits among its season-high 17 overall to back Dempster to the 7-3 win

"(His splitter) was like some Nintendo stuff going on out there," catcher Davis Ross said.

Dempster struck out 10 for the second time in three starts.

"It's always nice to get the first win out of the way, especially the first one with a new team, and hopefully I can build off that and work toward another," he told the Red Sox' official website.

Dempster last faced the Blue Jays in a relief appearance in 2005 while with the Chicago Cubs, and his last appearance north of the border was April 19, 2003, when he pitched in Montreal while with Cincinnati. Dempster went 5-0 with a 3.71 ERA in nine starts visiting the Expos.

He can only hope his teammates' bats stay hot when he tries to send the Blue Jays (10-18) to their 12th defeat in 16 games. Led by Mike Napoli's two homers - tying Will Middlebrooks for a team-best four versus Toronto this season - Boston hit five out of the park in Wednesday's 10-1 win. The Red Sox, who hit three long balls in Tuesday's 9-7 loss, now have one more homer against Toronto (16) than the rest of their opponents combined.

"When the roof is closed and it's warm in here, the ball definitely flies,' said manager John Farrell, whose club has a major league-best 8-3 road record.

Trying to slow down the Red Sox will be J.A. Happ (2-1, 3.86), who knows he'll have to cut down on his walks. The left-hander gave up two free passes in his last start, both of which scored on a Travis Hafner's three-run homer in Toronto's 5-4 loss at the New York Yankees on Saturday, and has 11 overall.

"It's something that can't happen,' Happ said. "Maybe I was trying to overanalyze out there, set myself down to bring myself up, but we're well beyond that point. I've just got to figure it out quicker.'

Happ had it figured out against Boston in his first start of the season in a 5-0 win on April 6, combining with two relievers on a two-hitter.

The southpaw will get his first look at David Ortiz this season, who has hit safely in each of his 10 games since coming off the DL on April 20.

Ortiz, 0 for 2 off Happ, is riding a career-best 22-game hitting streak dating to last season.

Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion, who had his eight-game hitting streak snapped on Wednesday, is 1 for 11 off Dempster. So is Blue Jays center fielder Colby Rasmus.

Boston has outscored Toronto 36-19 while winning three of five meetings this season, all played at Rogers Centre.

Preview: Marlins (8-20) at Phillies (12-16)

                              Game: 1
                              Venue: Citizens Bank Park
                              Date: May 02, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

After their pitching staff allowed 20 runs and 31 hits in consecutive losses, the Philadelphia Phillies should be able to breathe easier with red-hot Kyle Kendrick set to face the worst offense in baseball.

Kendrick looks to continue his outstanding stretch Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series against the visiting Miami Marlins.

Despite having Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee on the mound, Philadelphia (12-16) was outscored 20-2 while getting swept in a brief series in Cleveland.

"The Indians beat up on us these two games,' said manager Charlie Manuel following a 6-0 loss on Wednesday. "They took it to us pretty good.'

Now Manuel's club returns home looking to snap a three-game losing streak at Citizens Bank Park.

Kendrick (2-1, 2.41 ERA) is pitching with some confidence heading into this start after recording the second shutout of his career in a 4-0 road win over the New York Mets on Friday.

The right-hander scattered three singles, walked one and struck out five while allowing two runs or less for the fourth straight start. He's 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA over that span.

"He's had a lot of poise on the mound,' first baseman Ryan Howard said.

Kendrick is also 7-0 with a 2.19 ERA in his last nine starts against the Marlins, who enter this series last in the majors in runs (79), batting average (.224) and homers (12). The Phillies have won eight of those nine games dating back to the 2010 season.

NL-worst Miami (8-20) failed to sweep the Mets on Wednesday and had its season-high three-game win streak snapped when its bullpen blew a three-run lead in a 7-6 loss.

"It's tough to sweep teams in the big leagues,' manager Mike Redmond said. "At the end of the day we won a series, and that's huge, and hopefully something we can build off during this road trip.'

The Marlins turn to right-hander Alex Sanabia (2-3, 4.85) as they embark on a season-high 10-game trip.

After tossing six shutout innings in his first start, Sanabia has posted a 6.08 ERA while dropping three of his last four outings. He allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings of a 3-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

Sanabia pitched well in his only career start in Philadelphia, giving up one run and six hits over six innings in a 2-1 loss on Sept. 15, 2011.

Howard, who had his 11-game hitting streak snapped Wednesday, went 6 for 12 with four doubles to help the Phillies take two of three in Miami last month.

Second baseman Chase Utley is batting .348 in 67 career home games against the Marlins.

With Miami's Rob Brantly questionable due to a cut on the index finger of his throwing hand, Miguel Olivo could get another start behind the plate.

Olivo, though, may have a difficult time breaking out of his 1-for-16 slump since he is 1 for 9 against Kendrick.

Third baseman Placido Polanco makes his first trip back to Philadelphia after spending the past three seasons with the Phillies.

Philadelphia has won nine of the last 12 meetings in this series.

Preview: Nationals (14-14) at Braves (17-10)

                                Game: 4
                                Venue: Turner Field
                                Date: May 02, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

An outstanding pitching performance helped them finally beat the Atlanta Braves, but the Washington Nationals still have injury concerns and an offensive slump holding them back.

After ending a nine-game losing streak to the NL East leaders, the Nationals will try to earn a split of this four-game series Thursday night at Turner Field.

Jordan Zimmerman gave up two hits over eight superb innings and Ian Desmond hit a two-run homer in a rare 2-0 victory over the Braves (17-10) on Wednesday as Washington (14-14) snapped a three-game skid overall.

"We needed that one bad and he went out and pitched a blueprint game,' manager Davey Johnson said.

Johnson received some good news on Wednesday with ace Stephen Strasburg expected to make his next scheduled start after experiencing no pain during a bullpen session.

Jayson Werth, however, missed his second game in a row with a strained right hamstring and a bruised left ankle and Bryce Harper had to leave in the middle of the sixth after tweaking his left side on a check swing.

The Nationals don't want to lose Werth or Harper for a significant amount of time with third baseman Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) likely returning this weekend.

"If I can play,' Harper said, "I'm going to play. I can tolerate pain. Hopefully nothing will keep me out of the lineup.'

Washington's depleted lineup has managed just seven runs and a dismal .165 batting average over its last four games.

It won't get any easier for the Nationals considering their recent track record against Atlanta's Kris Medlen (1-3, 3.26 ERA).

Medlen was dominant in two starts against Washington last season, allowing one run and striking out 20 over 14 innings in a pair of Atlanta victories.

After limiting opponents to three earned runs and 15 hits over 19 innings in his first three starts this season, the right-hander has taken a step back lately with eight runs and 17 hits allowed in consecutive losses.

He'll try to recover from one of the worst outings of his career after he surrendered five runs and 10 hits - including a pair of homers - over 5 1-3 innings in a 7-4 loss at Detroit on Saturday.

Adam LaRoche, a career .177 hitter in 57 games against Atlanta, will try to break out of his 1 for 35 slide overall.

Washington right-hander Dan Haren (2-3, 6.29 ERA) hopes to build off his promising performance in a 6-3 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday. He allowed two runs and six hits over a season-high six innings.

"I finally feel like part of the team,' said Haren, who was signed as a free agent this offseason. "I've got to be like this or better the rest of the year. There's no excuse for me not to be.'

Haren has won two of three career starts at Turner Field despite a 7.31 ERA, though those victories came back in 2004 and 2005.

B.J. Upton, who went 0 for 3 on Wednesday and is hitting .138 on the season, has struck out 11 times but has five homers and 10 hits in 31 career at_bats against Haren.

Atlanta, which ranks near the top of the majors in home runs and strikeouts, has whiffed 80 times but only has three home runs over the last seven games.

"That's what we're billed as,' manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Teams that aren't striking out are probably complaining they don't have any power.'
