  • Preview: Cubs (14-22) at Nationals (20-16)

    Game: 3
    Venue: Nationals Park
    Date: May 12, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

After having their season-high win streak snapped, the Washington Nationals are hoping Bryce Harper can return to the lineup and Gio Gonzalez can end his recent pattern of inconsistent performances.

The left-hander will seek to win back-to-back starts for the first time this season in Sunday's series finale against the Chicago Cubs, who will try to help Scott Feldman earn his fourth victory in as many outings.

Harper sat out a second straight game Saturday as he continues to recover from surgery for an ingrown toenail, and Jayson Werth was placed on 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 3, because of a strained right hamstring.

Manager Davey Johnson said he had expected Harper to return to the lineup Saturday, but his toe was still ailing.

Without those two players, the Nationals (20-16) took Friday's series opener 7-3 but fell 8-2 the next day to end a five-game win streak. Anthony Rizzo, batting .448 with 14 RBIs in his last 15 games, had three hits and drove in a pair of runs as the Cubs (14-22) snapped a five-game skid in the series.

Gonzalez (3-2, 4.97 ERA) will try to help his team bounce back with his third win in four starts. He gave up two runs over six innings in a 6-2 victory in Pittsburgh last Sunday after allowing five over four frames in a loss in Atlanta on April 30.

"Gio did a great job of keeping us in that game after the tough start," Johnson said.

Gonzalez tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out nine in his most recent start against the Cubs, a 9-1 home win Sept. 5. He was 0-1 with a 10.38 ERA in his previous two matchups, both in Chicago.

In this one, he'll throw opposite Feldman (3-3, 2.70), who is 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA in his last three starts. The right-hander gave up two hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings Monday in a 9-2 win over his former Texas teammates.

"That's really encouraging to see. That's three or four really good outings in a row, especially two very impressive outings in a row," manager Dale Sveum told the team's website. "He's got a feel for (his cutter) right now and it's impressive, especially to go along with his two-seamer."

In his first matchup with Washington, Feldman will try to earn wins in four straight starts for the second time in his career. He pulled off that feat Aug. 23-Sept. 9, 2009, while with the Rangers.

Only two Nationals hitters have had more than one at-bat against Feldman. Kurt Suzuki is 5 for 17 (.294) with two doubles, and Denard Span is 4 for 14 (.286).

Rizzo is 0 for 3 with two strikeouts against Gonzalez, while Starlin Castro and Julio Borbon are both 4 for 7.

    • Preview: Padres (16-20) at Rays (18-18)

      Game: 3
      Venue: Tropicana Field
      Date: May 12, 2013 1:40 PM EDT

With Evan Longoria providing some late-game heroics in their latest victory, the Tampa Bay Rays have been finding ways to slug out wins after a slow start to their homestand.

Longoria will try to stay hot and help the Rays to a season-high fifth straight win and a three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres on Sunday at Tropicana Field.

One out away from falling to 3-3 on the homestand, Longoria hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off Padres closer Huston Street to rally Tampa Bay to an 8-7 win Saturday.

Street blew his first save in nine chances for San Diego (16-20), which has lost two in a row after winning 11 of 14.

"Tremendous comeback by our guys,' Padres manager Bud Black said. "The bullpen did a good job. We fell one pitch short in the end.'

The Rays (18-18) won their fourth straight to get back to .500 for the first time since April 7, though they had to rally after Jesus Guzman's pinch-hit grand slam off Jeremy Hellickson helped San Diego overcome a 6-2 deficit in the seventh.

If the Padres had held on, it would have been the 14th game the Rays lost after leading, including two in a row against Toronto to open the 10-game homestand.

"You need games like this, whether it's myself or anybody coming through in the clutch, to kind of boost morale and jump-start everything,' Longoria said.

The star third baseman is on quite a roll, hitting .424 with 15 RBIs over his last 14 games and .480 (12 for 25) with three homers on the homestand.

Longoria has led a Tampa Bay offense that's averaged 6.6 runs while hitting .297 with 17 homers over the last 13 games. The Rays have done a lot of their damage against left-handers with a .354 average and four homers during that span.

Longoria is 16 for 41 with six extra-base hits against lefties, while infielder Ryan Roberts is 13 for 35 with two homers in those matchups.

That doesn't bode well for southpaw Eric Stults (3-2, 4.50 ERA), who looks to give the Padres his third straight quality start.

After going 1-2 with a 6.95 ERA over a four-start stretch, Stults has allowed three runs over 13 innings in his last two against NL-worst clubs Chicago and Miami.

While he's never faced the Rays, Stults is 1-0 with a 1.66 ERA in three career starts against AL opponents.

Tampa Bay hopes right-hander Roberto Hernandez (1-4, 4.66) can deliver another strong performance at Tropicana Field in his first meeting the Padres.

Hernandez has a 6.50 ERA while losing each of his three road starts, but he's struck out 14 and allowed two runs over 12 innings in his last two at home.

Strikeouts have been a concern for the Padres, who have reached double digits in three straight games. They've whiffed 39 times during that span and are among the major league leaders with 300.

Carlos Quentin has struck out four times in his last six at_bats and is 1 for 24 in his last nine games, though he's 3 for 9 with two homers lifetime against Hernandez.

Nick Hundley has seven strikeouts while going hitless in 20 at_bats over his last seven games.

      • Preview: Yankees (22-13) at Royals (18-15)

        Game: 6
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
        Date: May 12, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

The New York Yankees hope to provide the support they could not during Hiroki Kuroda's last start and record their first road sweep of the Kansas City Royals in almost six years.

Kuroda looks to continue his strong spring while trying to help the Yankees to a season-high fifth straight win Sunday against the struggling Royals.

Kuroda (4-2, 2.30 ERA) has lasted seven innings in each of his last two starts, and his lone mistake was a two-run homer to Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez in New York's 2-0 loss at Coors Field on Tuesday.

"He pitched well enough to win, that's for sure," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

New York (22-13) had provided the right-hander with an average of 5.75 runs of support in his previous six starts, but managed four hits Tuesday.

"Kuroda threw the ball well,' teammate Vernon Wells said. "We just couldn't do anything to support him.'

His teammates totaled one run while he went 0-2 with a 4.66 ERA against the Royals last season.

The Yankees, however, have not lost since Kuroda's last start and are in position to sweep the Royals (18-15) in Kansas City for the first time since Sept. 7-9, 2007. Wells hit a two-run, go-ahead homer in the fifth inning and made a running catch in the gap to end Saturday's 3-2 win.

Mariano Rivera improved to 14 for 14 on save chances Saturday. The 43-year-old, who will retire at the end of the season, has converted 28 straight against the Royals. His latest came just over a year after he tore the ACL in his right knee while shagging balls in the Kauffman Stadium outfield.

"I think Mo said it best, as an athlete, you can get hurt anywhere,' Girardi said. "It just happened to be here. ... I'm sure it was good for him to get out there.'

Wells is batting .353 (6 for 17) with two homers and five RBIs in his last four games.

New York hopes to continue its recent success against scheduled Kansas City starter Ervin Santana (3-1, 2.36), who is 0-5 with a 6.75 ERA in eight starts against the Yankees since he pitched eight strong innings Aug. 1, 2008, for the Los Angeles Angels.

"A lot of people just try to do too much. I know they're a good team," Santana told the Royals' official website. "They're aggressive. But if you make your pitches, you're going to get them out."

The right-hander has thrived in his new home at Kauffman Stadium, where he's allowed two earned runs in 23 innings while going 2-0 in three starts.

Santana's last outing came at Baltimore on Tuesday, when he gave up three first-inning runs and lasted six while not factoring in the decision of a 4-3 loss. Seven of the 12 runs he's yielded this season have come in the first inning.

"The first inning was, like always, a little trouble, but after that I settled down, threw a lot of strikes and put guys away," he said.

Billy Butler hit his fourth home run for Kansas City, which has lost five of six since winning four in a row.

Butler is 2 for 19 with six strikeouts in the last five games.

        • Preview: Orioles (22-15) at Twins (17-16)

          Game: 3
          Venue: Target Field
          Date: May 12, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

Scott Diamond has been solid since coming off the disabled list last month.

The Minnesota Twins left-hander, though, continues to struggle at home.

Diamond will try to win a career high-tying third consecutive start - and his first in Minneapolis in nine outings - in Sunday's rubber game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Since coming off the DL on April 13 following offseason elbow surgery, Diamond (3-2, 3.03 ERA) has allowed just 10 earned runs and three walks while striking out 15 in five outings. The southpaw threw a season-high seven innings of shutout ball in Tuesday's 6-1 win at Boston.

"Everything is getting back in sync," Diamond, 12-7 with a 3.54 ERA as a rookie a year ago, told the Twins' official website. "This is what you always work toward. It feels good to have it happen. But it's still a long season, so we have to continue to build."

The Twins (17-16), looking to build off Saturday's 8-5 win, hope Diamond can deliver after going 0-2 with a 5.91 ERA in his first two home starts this season. He is 0-6 with a 5.15 ERA in his last eight starts at Target Field.

Diamond will face an Orioles teams that's won or split its last three series in Minneapolis.

Baltimore (22-15) has 30 hits in this series, led by third baseman Manny Machado, who has three in each game. Nick Markakis and Adam Jones are also feasting on Twins pitching. Markakis, 12 for 22 in five games against Minnesota this season, is batting .513 (20 for 39) during his nine-game hitting streak in this matchup.

Jones' streak versus Minnesota reached 12 on Saturday with a double, and he's batting .478 (11 for 23) against the Twins this season.

Jones and Markakis both have two hits in three at_bats off Diamond.

While the Orioles are batting .330 against the Twins in 2013, they've only defeated them twice in large part due to their starters posting a 10.03 ERA.

Sunday's scheduled starter Wei-Yin Chen (2-3, 3.40) will pitch against Minnesota for the second time in his career after throwing seven innings of three-run ball in a 4-3 victory in Minneapolis on July 19.

The Orioles have won three of the left-hander's last four starts after he went 6 1-3 innings in Tuesday's 4-3 victory over Kansas City. Chen's outing was cut short due to a rain delay, and he had to settle for a no-decision after leaving with a 3-1 lead.

"I just want to keep helping the team, do my job, keep my team in the ballgame," he told the Orioles' official website through an interpreter. "And keep winning the ballgame."

Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau have been doing their part to help Minnesota win four of five. Mauer, 6 for 9 with three runs and three RBIs this series, is riding a 10-game hitting streak, while Morneau has hit safely in seven straight games. He matched season highs with three hits and three RBIs on Saturday.

Mauer, Morneau, Trevor Plouffe, Brian Dozier and Josh Willingham, who had Saturday off, are all 1 for 3 off Chen.

The Twins' last home series win over Baltimore came in 2009.

          • Preview: Rangers (23-13) at Astros (10-27)

            Game: 3
            Venue: Minute Maid Park
            Date: May 12, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

The AL West-leading Texas Rangers just held on to win their 10th consecutive series against the Houston Astros.

Given their history against Jordan Lyles, the Rangers could be in a great position to earn the sweep Sunday.

Since an 8-2 season-opening loss at Houston (10-27), Texas (23-13) has won four straight against the AL's newest team. The Rangers, winners of six of eight overall, improved to 23-6 in this series since 2009 with Saturday's 8-7 victory.

Texas scored six runs in the sixth and one in the seventh before the Astros rallied with three in the final two innings.

"We'll see what happens tomorrow," said right fielder Nelson Cruz, who homered for the second straight night. "Hopefully we can sweep the series."

The Rangers, now 12-5 against divisional foes, get their first look at Lyles (1-0, 4.50 ERA) since tagging the 22-year-old for five runs - three earned - in a 6-2 home win June 15.

Lyles has an 8.22 ERA while losing his last three starts versus Texas.

The right-hander, though, has pitched well in two starts since being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on May 2. Lyles has gone five innings each time, striking out 12 with three walks. He retired 14 of the last 17 he faced in Tuesday's 7-6 home win over the Los Angeles Angels.

"I threw the ball a little bit better tonight than I did last outing (a 7-3, 14-inning home loss to Detroit on May 2), just from the fact of being down, 3-0, and putting up some zeros against a pretty good offense to give our team chance to win," Lyles told the Astros' official website.

Manager Bo Porter pulled the plug on Lyles' last start after 82 pitches because he wants to ease him back into the rotation, but if the right-hander has it going Sunday, it could be difficult to take him out early again given the Astros' bullpen woes. Houston's relievers have a 9.82 ERA over the last three games.

Despite giving up a season-worst four runs Saturday, the Rangers' bullpen is one of the majors' best with a 3.06 ERA.

That won't mean much Sunday if scheduled starter Nick Tepesch (2-3, 4.50) has another rough outing. The rookie right-hander is 0-2 with an 8.44 ERA in two May starts - Texas has scored twice in both games - after walking a season-high four in Monday's 9-2 road loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Tepesch, who has yet to face Houston, could get a little more run support this time as the Rangers are averaging 5.8 runs and 10.3 hits during their winning streak over Houston.

Rangers DH/first baseman Lance Berkman is 7 for 14 during that stretch after going 1 for 2 with a homer Saturday. He's hit safely in 17 straight games in Houston, with the first three of that run coming while with the Astros.

            Berkman has never faced Lyles.

Cruz and third baseman Adrian Beltre, who also homered Saturday, have 12 at_bats against the right-hander to lead Texas. Cruz has four hits, including a home run, while Beltre has three singles.

Astros third baseman Matt Dominguez went 2 for 4 with his first two-homer game Saturday. He was 1 for 10 in his previous three home games versus Texas.

The Rangers, winners of 14 of 17 in Houston, can record their first four-game win streak outside Arlington since June 10-20.

            • Preview: Rockies (19-17) at Cardinals (23-12)

              Game: 3
              Venue: Busch Stadium
              Date: May 12, 2013 2:15 PM EDT

The Colorado Rockies are mired in a 26-inning scoreless rut and now have to try to end Jaime Garcia's three-start win streak.

Garcia has been stingy during his run and will try to help the St. Louis Cardinals complete a three-game sweep and hand the visiting Rockies a fifth straight defeat Sunday.

Colorado (19-17) hasn't produced a run since Carlos Gonzalez's first-inning sacrifice fly Thursday in a 3-1 defeat to the Yankees. St. Louis (23-12) has posted consecutive 3-0 victories to start this series, as Shelby Miller fired a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts Friday before Adam Wainwright took a no-hitter into the eighth inning Saturday and settled for a two-hitter and struck out seven.

The Rockies had been hitless in 49 consecutive at_bats before rookie Nolan Arenado lined a clean hit to center field with one out in the eighth off Wainwright.

"I'm just trying to hit the ball hard,' Arenado said. "I knew he wanted to get ahead with a strike and he threw one down and away. I got pretty lucky, I guess.'

Dexter Fowler added a ninth-inning single while Colorado's only other hit in the series came when Eric Young led off the game Friday with a single off Miller.

"What a great couple of days,' St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said.

Colorado has also gone 34 consecutive innings without an extra-base hit since Todd Helton's homer in the second inning in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to New York. Manager Walt Weiss isn't planning a meeting for the Rockies, who have never been shut out in three straight games.

"You leave it alone,' Weiss said. "You know, everyone gets beat up a little bit in this game at some point, but our guys will keep grinding and we'll to come out and try to turn it around (Sunday)."

After facing the right-handed Miller and Wainwright, the Rockies will now try to improve on their 5-8 mark when opposing left-handers as they look to get their bats going against Garcia (4-1, 2.25 ERA), 3-0 with a 1.25 ERA in his last three outings.

Garcia gave up one run over eight innings last Sunday to earn a 10-1 victory at Milwaukee. He's 0-2 with an 11.85 ERA in three career starts against Colorado.

Gonzalez is the only Rockies hitter to homer against him, going 4 for 9 with two doubles as well. Fowler is 0 for 6 versus Garcia.

Troy Tulowitzi, among baseball's leaders with a 1.032 OPS, has five strikeouts among six hitless at_bats in this series. Gonzalez is 0 for 7 with four strikeouts and Helton is 0 for 5 with a walk.

St. Louis has posted a 2.02 ERA while winning nine of 10, including four straight at home.

Yadier Molina has four hits in the series, and is batting .476 during an 11-game hitting streak. He's 5 for 8 against Jorge De La Rosa (3-3, 3.52), who will start Sunday for Colorado.

De La Rosa has given up all of his runs on the road while posting a 5.13 ERA. He pitched six innings in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Yankees, and is 3-2 with a 5.30 ERA in seven career starts against the Cardinals.

              • Preview: Braves (21-15) at Giants (22-15)

                Game: 4
                Venue: AT&T Park
                Date: May 12, 2013 4:05 PM EDT

With help from red-hot Marco Scutaro, the San Francisco Giants will try to close out their longest homestand of the season in winning style.

Whether the Giants beat Atlanta on Sunday, though, might depend on whether Tim Lincecum can regain his form after a pair of lackluster outings.

Scutaro, the MVP of last year's NL championship series, is batting .488 (21 for 43) during an 11-game hit streak and had his fifth consecutive multihit performance in a 10-1 win Saturday. Gregor Blanco also drove in a career-high four runs as San Francisco (22-15) earned its ninth victory in 12 attempts and sixth on its homestand.

"It's more of a case that (Scutaro is) healthy," manager Bruce Bochy told the team's website. "That back issue's not there right now. He got that cleared up, and it freed him up and he's back to feeling the way he felt last year when he was swinging good, and that's 100 percent."

The Giants will conclude their 10-game stay at AT&T Park on Sunday hoping Lincecum (2-2, 4.75 ERA) can get back on track.

The right-hander has given up five runs in each of his last two outings after giving up a combined two in his previous two starts.

"That's definitely frustrating, just the lack of consistency, making a great pitch and then not repeating it," he told the team's website.

A matchup with the Braves (21-15) wouldn't appear to help his woes - he's 0-4 with a 4.38 ERA in his last four regular-season matchups.

Lincecum, however, pitched a two-hit shutout against Atlanta over that same stretch in the 2010 division series opener and has given up a combined four runs in the last two overall meetings. He allowed three over five innings in a 7-1 loss in San Francisco on Aug. 26, his only matchup with the Braves last season.

Lincecum has received zero runs of support in those past two games against Atlanta and a combined three in those four regular-season defeats.

In this one, he'll pitch opposite Kris Medlen (1-4, 3.25), who has lost three straight decisions but was solid in his most recent outing. The right-hander allowed two runs over seven innings against Cincinnati on Tuesday but did not get a decision.

Closer Craig Kimbrel gave up two runs in the ninth inning in a 5-4 loss that denied Medlen his first win since April 9.

"I was using both sides of the plate really for the first time this year consistently, throwing in and out for strikes," Medlen told the team's website. "That's the best I've felt."

Medlen lost his only start against the Giants on May 26, 2009, and Pablo Sandoval has two doubles and a home run in four career at_bats against him. Scutaro, batting .370 (10 for 27) in his last seven games versus Atlanta, has never faced the right-hander.

Brian McCann, who has a 13-game hit streak against the Giants, is 10 for 29 (.345) lifetime against Lincecum, the best showing by any active player who has faced him at least 29 times. McCann is also batting .330 in San Francisco over his career.

Since winning Thursday's series opener, the Braves have a combined 10 hits and been outscored 18-3 in their back-to-back defeats.

                • Preview: Athletics (19-19) at Mariners (17-20)

                  Game: 3
                  Venue: Safeco Field
                  Date: May 12, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

The Oakland Athletics' season-worst losing streak is over.

Perhaps they can put up enough runs to help Tommy Milone end the worst stretch of his career.

The hard-luck left-hander will try to avoid a fifth straight losing start Sunday when the A's and Seattle Mariners complete their series at Safeco Field.

After being held to 11 runs during its five-game skid, Oakland (19-19) got back on track with Saturday's 4-3 victory.

"You're going to go through your lumps. Hopefully we're going to give more than we take," said third baseman Josh Donaldson, who hit a solo homer along with Daric Barton and Brandon Moss.

The A's lead the majors with 186 runs, but they've plated five total in Milone's last five starts after scoring 28 in his first three.

"You just have to deal with situations like this as a pitcher because you can't control them,' said Milone (3-4, 3.13 ERA), who went seven innings and didn't give up an earned run in Tuesday's 1-0 loss at Cleveland. "Obviously, we want to win and I want to win, but my goal is to keep the team in every game that I'm out there. That's all I'm trying to do.'

The A's have won Milone's last five starts against Seattle (17-20) after he threw seven innings of two-run ball in a 6-2 victory in Oakland on April 3.

Sunday's starter Joe Saunders (2-4, 6.15) walked a season-high four and lasted just four innings in that contest, his Mariners debut.

The veteran left-hander is coming off another rough outing outside Seattle, surrendering seven runs in last Sunday's 10-2 loss to Toronto. Saunders is 0-4 with a 12.54 ERA in four road starts compared to 2-0 with a 0.81 ERA in three at Safeco Field.

"I just think it's somewhat of a fluke thing right now,' manager Eric Wedge said. "It's gained a little bit of momentum and we've got to stop it.'

Saunders, just the 10th Mariner to allow two earned runs or fewer in his first three home starts of the season, also needs to stop giving up home runs. He's been tagged for six in his last four outings after not giving up any in his first three.

A's center fielder Yoenis Cespedes, the team leader with six homers, is 1 for 3 with a home run off Saunders. Cespedes, though, has no hits in his last 15 at_bats.

Mariners left fielder Jason Bay is mired in an 0-for-11 skid after grounding out as a pinch-hitter Saturday, but he'll likely be in Sunday's lineup after Raul Ibanez got the nod from Wedge the previous two games. He went a combined 2 for 6 with a homer and three RBIs.

Bay is hitless in six at_bats against Milone.

A's shortstop Jed Lowrie, who went 2 for 2 with two doubles off Saunders on April 3, leads the team with 43 hits after recording his seventh three-hit game, which is tied for the most in the majors.

Oakland has won nine of 13 in Seattle after ending its season-worst five-game road skid.

                  • Preview: Marlins (11-26) at Dodgers (14-21)

                    Game: 3
                    Venue: Dodger Stadium
                    Date: May 12, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

With their longest losing streak in five seasons in the past, the Los Angeles Dodgers finally have something positive to build upon.

Coming off their first victory in May, the Dodgers hope to begin a run in that positive direction Sunday against the visiting Miami Marlins.

Andre Ethier had four hits and Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched 6 2-3 solid innings as Los Angeles (14-21) snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 7-1 home win over Miami on Saturday. The Dodgers scored more than four runs once during their longest slide since August 2008 before breaking out Saturday to snap a five-game home losing streak.

"Every win is important and every win counts," catcher A.J. Ellis said. "And when you're in the midst of a losing streak, you definitely want to break it as soon as you can.

"Hopefully it's something we can build on."

Ethier, who had two doubles, was 4 for 23 (.174) with no extra-base hits in his previous six contests. This was the third time in five meetings versus Miami he's recorded a four-hit game. Ethier is a lifetime .403 hitter against the Marlins.

The Dodgers hope Chris Capuano (0-2, 10.38 ERA) has a better performance Sunday after he allowed six runs with two homers and six other hits in four innings of a 9-2 loss to Arizona on Monday. It was his first action since missing almost a month with a strained left calf.

"The training staff did a great job with my calf, getting it ready to play. So physically I felt great,' said Capuano, who turns 35 in August. "Maybe I was pressing a little bit and missing a little bit with some pitches.'

In losing both of his starts this season, the left-hander has yielded 11 runs and 13 hits in six innings.

Capuano is 5-5 with a 3.61 ERA in 14 starts against the Marlins (11-26). He gave up two hits and struck out 10 in eight innings of a 5-0 win at Miami on Aug. 12.

The Marlins' only win in the last five games was 5-4 on Friday at Dodger Stadium, and they've totaled two runs in the four defeats. Miguel Olivo homered in the seventh inning and Placido Polanco had two of the five hits Saturday for Miami, which has scored a major league-low 105 runs.

Polanco is 4 for 18 (.222) in the last five games.

Miami's Tom Koehler (0-0, 3.18) will make his first 2013 start and second of his career in place of the struggling Wade LeBlanc in the finale. The right-hander has given up all four of his runs this season over four innings of the last two appearances after throwing 7 1-3 scoreless frames in his first four.

"He's going to get an opportunity to go in and make a start, and we'll see how he does," manager Mike Redmond told the Marlins' official website.

Koehler, who began the season at Triple-A New Orleans, gave up three runs on two homers in five innings of a 4-2 loss to the New York Mets in his other career start Oct. 3.

He has never faced the Dodgers.

                    • Preview: Phillies (17-21) at Diamondbacks (21-16)

                      Game: 4
                      Venue: Chase Field
                      Date: May 12, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

On a staff with other big-name pitchers, Kyle Kendrick has been the unexpected ace for the Philadelphia Phillies so far.

The surprising Kendrick will try to win his fourth straight start and lead the Phillies to a winning record on their West Coast swing Sunday when they close it out against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Philadelphia (17-21) snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 3-3 on its seven-game trip behind Cliff Lee's seven shutout innings in a 3-1 victory Saturday.

The Diamondbacks (21-16), who had their season-high five-game winning streak stopped, finished with nine hits but stranded nine runners and went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.

"We had a chance to win but things didn't go our way,' said manager Kirk Gibson, whose team fell one game back of San Francisco in the NL West. "It was a struggle.'

Now Gibson's club faces another tough test against Kendrick (4-1, 2.45 ERA), who has been one of the best pitchers in baseball over his last six starts while Lee finds some consistency and Roy Halladay recovers from shoulder surgery.

Since giving up five in 5 2-3 innings while losing his first start, the right-hander hasn't allowed more than two runs in any outing - going 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA over that span.

"Kyle's pitched great," second baseman Chase Utley told the team's official website. "It seems like every game, he definitely gives us a chance to win."

Although he's 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA on the road and had a run of 25 scoreless innings there end in his last start, Kendrick hasn't had that kind of success against the Diamondbacks.

He's 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA in three career starts in Arizona, and hasn't beaten the Diamondbacks in six lifetime outings.

Arizona, though, has scored just nine runs while going 1 for 26 with runners in scoring position over its last four contests.

Paul Goldschmidt is hitless in his last five in those situations and 3 for 20 overall in his last six home games.

Gerardo Parra was a bright spot Saturday with three hits and is 8 for 18 over his last five games.

Scheduled starter Brandon McCarthy (0-3, 6.75) looks for his first win with the Diamondbacks in his first career start against the Phillies.

The right-hander has struggled since getting hit in the head with a liner that caused a skull fracture, an epidural hemorrhage and a brain contusion that required surgery last September.

McCarthy, who went 8-6 with a career-best 3.24 ERA before having his 2012 season cut short, will try to build off his finest performance of this season. He allowed three runs and eight hits over 6 1-3 innings before leaving without a decision in a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

McCarthy faces a Philadelphia team that has struggled offensively, totaling nine runs and hitting .225 over its last four games.

Utley, Michael Young and Ryan Howard are a combined 4 for 41 (.098) during that span.

Jimmy Rollins, however, went 2 for 3 with two RBIs on Saturday and is 6 for 16 with a homer and three RBIs in his last four games.

"Obviously, you adjust your swing because you've got to get a good swing first," said Rollins, who broke out of a 3-for-27 slump. "Now that I'm starting to get there, the confidence comes that I can put on the same swing in any situation.'

                      • Preview: Angels (14-22) at White Sox (14-20)

                        Game: 3
                        Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
                        Date: May 12, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

While playing surprisingly good defense of late, the Los Angeles Angels have managed to take advantage of some poor glove work by the Chicago White Sox to put themselves in position to sweep their weekend road set.

With White Sox ace Chris Sale standing in the way, the Angels try for a season-high fourth straight victory Sunday night.

Los Angeles (14-22) ranks among the major league leaders with 27 errors, but has not committed one in four straight contests.

Chicago (14-20), meanwhile, has made five errors in the set, including three in Saturday's 3-2 loss. The White Sox have committed 14 of their 27 errors while losing eight of 12.

"I don't think that's anything mental," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "Not being in the right position or things like that. Physical stuff, you get. But you know it's just one of those that you do have to do it better. It's that simple.

The Angels have won five straight and 13 of 18 over the White Sox, including six of eight at U.S. Cellular Field.

"Everything is getting back to normal, playing like how we are supposed to be playing baseball," Saturday's winning pitcher Jerome Williams said.

Mike Trout hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Albert Pujols scored the go-ahead run in the third on a passed ball that was set up by a Chicago error.

Trout has batted .356 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 11 games since he went 4 for 32 (.125) in the previous eight. He's hitting .364 with two home runs and six RBIs in five career games at U.S. Cellular.

"There is no doubt he is finding a comfort zone in the box and it is good to see him drive the ball,' manager Mike Scioscia said.

Pujols is batting .341 during a 10-game hitting streak on the south side of Chicago.

The Angels, however, could have a tough time against Sale (3-2, 3.42 ERA), who is 2-1 with a 2.22 ERA in four starts since he allowed eight runs in 4 1-3 innings of a 9-4 loss at Cleveland on April 13. The left-hander gave up a run without a walk in 7 1-3 innings of a 2-1, 11-inning victory at Kansas City on Monday.

In Sale's only start versus Los Angeles on May 17, he allowed a home run to Pujols and struck out seven in 5 1-3 innings of a 6-1 victory.

Scheduled Los Angeles starter C.J. Wilson (3-1, 3.86) allowed four runs - one earned - and walked six over 3 2-3 innings that day to fall to 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA as a starter against the White Sox.

Only two of the seven runs Wilson yielded in a 7-6 loss at Houston on Tuesday were earned. The left-hander lasted 6 1-3 innings and matched a career high with 12 strikeouts, but allowed four runs on two homers.

Dayan Viciedo had three hits for Chicago, which loaded the bases with one out in the second inning but scored only two runs. Though the White Sox went 3 for 5 with runners in scoring position Saturday, they are hitting .221 this season in that situation.

With three more strikeouts, Chicago slugger Adam Dunn has fanned 15 times while going 4 for 33 (.121) in his last nine games. He's 1 for 25 with 12 strikeouts in his last seven against the Angels.
