    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds for the US Open in June in Ardmore, PA.........

11-2-- Eldrick Woods-- Was gifted with $352,000 after fiasco last week.

12-1-- Rory McIlroy-- Was taking Nike's money a good idea?

22-1-- Lee Westwood-- Has never won a major, will he?

25-1-- Brandt Snedeker-- Contended for while at Augusta.

25-1-- Phil Mickelson-- Hasn't won much in the northeast.

25-1-- Justin Rose-- Had a nine on the par-4 12th hole Sunday.

Armadillo:Wednesday's List of 13: Some of our favorite events of the year........

There are certain things we look forward to each year which give our year a rhythm, a pace we’re used to. Here are some of my favorite sports-related events each year………
    13) Australian Open on TV, January—When you’re up late at night writing about and handicapping basketball, always good to have some live TV on to keep you company. This is probably the only tennis tournament I’ll watch all year, but it is good stuff.

    12) NFL schedule getting released—the old Viking coach Bud Grant always said, “Its not who you play, its when you play them.” Seeing the regular season, who gets what primetime games, the difficult schedule spots the league puts the better teams in, its always an interesting night when the schedule comes out.

Its also fun when the Las Vegas sportsbooks put lines out for every game from Weeks 1-16, so people can speculate in the spring/summer what will be happening in the fall. Not as easy as it sounds.

    11) When our keeper league fantasy baseball draft starts, whenever they drop the green flag at the Daytona 500 (unrelated events, just a milestone that winter is almost over).

The original 18-team, 24-player per team draft took 82 days to complete eight years ago; the shorter drafts now last a week or so.

    10) You can make a solid argument now that Thanksgiving weekend is the best sports weekend of the year: late season NFL games, rivalry games in college football, some of the better pre-conference college basketball games, plus coconut custard pie and cranberry sauce. Whats not to like?

    9) British Open—My favorite golf tournament because I’m out in Las Vegas that weekend and the TV coverage comes on at like 4am out there and it totally ruins whatever sleep patterns have existed until that part of the trip. By time tournament ends, I’m clueless as to what time it is, what day it is, but I know vacation is almost over.

    8) NBA Summer League—Same July trip in Vegas is the showcase league for both NBA teams and all the overseas leagues that sign American players. Usually spend 2-3 full days watching games.

    Underrated and surprisingly inexpensive fun.

    7) Daily routine of baseball—From 7pm-1am Monday-Saturday from April until Labor Day, you’ll probably find me in front of the TV/laptop following baseball; in September football joins in too.

Something about the daily routine of it that makes it special, gives life a timeline to follow every day.

    6) College football Saturdays—From noon til 2am every Saturday from Labor Day until early December, listen to bands and watch lot of football. Vegas casinos are great during college football; people coming from all over to back their favorite teams. I’ve been to games at Penn State, Tennessee, South Carolina; the tailgating experience is really something, and by that I mean its way better in warmer weather!!!!

    5) Stanley Cup playoffs—Any overtime game in hockey is tremendous drama; this sport is best suited for the best-of-7 format, unlike the NBA, which would be better off with a best-of-3 format. Hockey playoffs are great fun, especially if you’ve ever hung out in a sportsbook with women from Vancouver watching the Canucks play.

    4) Minor league baseball is underrated fun, whether over the river here in Troy (Astros’ Class A team) or Las Vegas (Mets’ AAA team). Inexpensive tickets, hot dogs; what could be better?

    3) College basketball Championship Week—Wall-to-wall game for 3-4 days, all with tremendous meaning. In some ways, Championship Week is more fun than the NCAA tournament; certainly has lot more action.

    2) NFL Sundays—When the Rams are good, NFL Sundays are the pinnacle of any week for me, but even in lean years, they’re great fun. Only reason I have DirecTV is so I can have the NFL Sunday Ticket in my house, that’s how much fun it is.

    1) First weekend of NCAA tournament— the best four days of the sports year, simple as that.

The four hottest bets in sports right now

The Atlanta Braves and Washington Capitals headline some of the hottest bets in sports. Here is a look at four of the best plays around:

(All stats going into Tuesday's action)

      Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are 11-1 SU (straight up) on the season and winners of nine games in a row. They lead the NL in ERA (1.82), WHIP (1.01), earned runs (22) and opponents' batting average (.200). The Braves are up $837 for the $100 per-game bettor on the season.

The Braves are -175 favorites at home versus the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

      Washington Capitals

The Caps have gotten hot at just the right time. Washington has won seven straight games as they position themselves for the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Captain Alex Ovechkin has powered Washington offensively notching nine goals, three assists and a plus-seven rating. Washington is up 5.74 units during their seven game winning streeak.

The Capitals are -152 at home on Tuesday night versus the Toronto Maple Leafs.

      Oakland A's Over

The Oakland Athletics lead the American League in home runs with 20 and are hammering the over early this season. The A's boast a 12-2 over/under record and are 3-0 in their last three games overall. The A's also lead the AL in runs (85), doubles (36) and total bases (228).

Oakland is a -209 as they host the Houston Astros tonight. The total is 7.5.

      Detroit Pistons

In the NBA, the Detroit Pistons are 7-0-1 ATS (against the spread). They have averaged 103.5 points per game during their last eight, well above their season average of 94.8.

The Pistons are on the road to close out their season as they face the Brooklyn Nets Wednesday. Vegas-based odds service The Sports Club lists an opening line of Brooklyn -6 and a total of 193.

NFL releases schedule Thursday, LVH to post Week 1 odds Friday

The NFL will release it's 2013 regular season schedule Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET on NFL Network.

To coincide with this, the Las Vegas Hotel SuperBook announced that it will be releasing Week 1 lines on Friday.

Each team knows its home and road opponents, but the order of the games and which contests will be under the primetime lights are yet to be announced.

For the first time since 2004, the defending Super Bowl champion will not host the Kickoff game. The Ravens will be forced to play the Thursday night opener on the road due to a scheduling conflict with MLB's Orioles, who are hosting the White Sox that night and an agreement not getting worked out between the two teams. The defending Super Bowl champion is 8-1 SU (straight up) in the past nine Kickoff games, with only the 2012 New York Giants losing.

Here's a look at other notable non-division games in 2013:

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots - Manning Brady XV
New England Patriots at Baltimore Ravens - rematch of the last two AFC Championship Games
Pittsburgh Steelers at Green Bay Packers - first meeting since Super Bowl XLV
Houston Texans at Baltimore Ravens - Ed Reed returns to Baltimore
Denver Broncos at New York Giants - Manning Manning III
Atlanta Falcons at San Francisco 49ers - rematch of last year's NFC Championship Game
Denver Broncos at Indianapolis Colts - Peyton Manning returns to Indianapolis

Rockets at Lakers: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers (-2.5, 203)

The Los Angeles Lakers can make the playoffs by beating the visiting Houston Rockets on Wednesday or having Utah lose to Memphis. Los Angeles has won seven of eight games in its late-season push and would actually claim the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference by beating the Rockets. Houston is one game ahead of Los Angeles entering the contest and also one game behind the Golden State Warriors, who are in sixth place heading into the final day.

The Rockets suffered a dreadful 119-112 loss to lowly Phoenix on Monday and that defeat has put them in danger of slipping into the No. 8 spot with the loss to the Lakers. Houston coach Kevin McHale is aware that winning the contest at the Staples Center is going to be an arduous task. “We are going to play a determined L.A. team,” McHale said. “We have to play well.” The Lakers will be playing their second game since losing Kobe Bryant to a torn Achilles’ tendon. Los Angeles notched a 91-86 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday without the superstar. The Lakers are 1-2 against the Rockets this season.

                    TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Comcast SportsNet Houston, Time Warner Cable SportsNet (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (45-36, 41-39-1 ATS):
Houston has lost three of its last five games despite playing a light April schedule. That has prompted concern with the playoffs about to commence. “I think that has been one of our problems all season – focus,” point guard Jeremy Lin said. “It usually comes with a younger team. At this point of the season, it is really not an excuse. Every game means so much. We are talking about playoff seeding. We are talking about matchups and things that are more important than anything we played for all season.” Leading scorer James Harden was just 5-of-18 from the field while scoring 16 points in the loss to the Suns. Harden averages 25.9 points.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (44-37, 33-46-2 ATS):
Center Dwight Howard had a monster game against San Antonio with 26 points and 17 rebounds. He is one rebound away from becoming the youngest player in NBA history to reach 9,000 career rebounds. Howard will be 27 years, 130 days old on Wednesday and legends Wilt Chamberlain (27 years, 144 days) and Bill Russell (27 years, 357 days) are the only other players to reach 9,000 before age 28. Guard Steve Blake stepped up with a season-best 23 points against the Spurs and will play a key role the rest of the season with Bryant sidelined. Blake averages 6.9 points.

                    TRENDS

                    - The over is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.

                    - Houston is 1-4 ATS in the past five games.

                    - Lakers are averaging 106.5 points over the past four games, better than the 102.2 season average.

                    - James Harden has averaged 22 points in three games against the Lakers this season, down from his season average of 25.9.

                    BUZZER BEATERS

                    1. Houston has won four of the past five meetings.

                    2. Lakers PG Steve Nash (hip, hamstring) will miss his eighth consecutive game.

                    3. Rockets F Carlos Delfino has made 10 3-pointers over the past two games.

On the court or on the bench? NBA final day injury report
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday is the final night of the NBA regular season and some teams are preparing for the playoffs while others are looking at the offseason.

Here's a look at the injury and rest situation heading into the final game of the season.

                      Boston Celtics
The Celtics will finish seventh in the Eastern Conference and play the Knicks in the first round. Paul Pierce is dealing with an illness but is probable Wednesday against Indiana. Kevin Garnett has played three of the past four games, but missed the previous eight games with an ankle injury. Jason Terry will sit out.

                      Brooklyn Nets
The Nets will finish fourth in the Eastern Conference and have nothing to play for in its final game against Detroit. Brooklyn could rest Joe Johnson who missed five games in late March and early April with a quad injury.

                      New York Knicks
New York has clinched the second seed in the East and has sent its stars to the bench. Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler, J.R. Smith, Ray Felton and Kenyon Martin all wore suits on Monday against the Bobcats. Anthony could see some minutes on Wednesday against the Hawks, according to the New York Post. Chandler has missed the past five games with a neck injury. Coach Mike Woodson told ESPN Radio that he is confident that both Chandler and Kenyon Martin will be ready for Game 1 of the playoffs against the Celtics.

                      Miami Heat
The Heat have nothing to play for against the bottom-feeding Magic. Four members of the starting lineup -- LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Mario Chalmers -- all sat in the team's last game against Cleveland. James has been nursing a hamstring injury while Wade and Bosh have been bothered by knee injuries.

                      Chicago Bulls
Taj Gibson and Joakim Noah returned to the lineup on Monday for the Bulls. Chicago will finish either fifth or sixth and will finish the season against Washington. "We need a lot of energy late, and I told them I was going to play today," Gibson said after the game. "They had me on limited minutes, they had Jo on limited minutes, but we just wanted to be out there and really push the guys and know that we got to sharpen up. We got to get ready for the playoffs."

                      San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs will finish second in the Western Conference. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard did not play Tuesday against Golden State. But Manu Ginobili could return to the lineup against Minnesota on Wednesday according to the San Antonio Express-News.

                      Denver Nuggets
Kenneth Faried will miss Denver's game against Phoenix. If the Nuggets win, they will finish third in the Western Conference.

                      Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers will make the playoffs if they beat Houston in the final game of the season. Kobe Bryant is out with a torn ACL and Steve Nash will also miss the game with the Rockets as MRIs confirmed he has nerve irritation from old injuries that are contributing to his hamstring pain the team announced Tuesday.

                      Portland Trail Blazers
LaMarcus Aldridge, Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum were all expected to miss Tuesday's game against the Clippers and Batum is confirmed to miss the team's final game against the Warriors.
