    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Its April 16 and the Angels already made separate road trips east to both Cincinnati and Minnesota. Brilliant scheduling.

-- Angels fell to 4-9 with an 8-2 loss in frosty Minneapolis.

-- Knicks lost by 11 at Charlotte, as they play out the string with playoffs already set against the Celtics starting this weekend.

-- Erik Bedard faced seven batters and six of them scored, with four of them walking, as the Astros lost 11-2 in Oakland.

-- Miami Marlins are 2-11; you watch them play and wonder how they're not going to lose 110+ games. Not much talent there.

-- Bruins' game was postponed last night, Celtics game for tonight was also postponed, as Boston tries to recover from Monday's horrific events.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) What would inspire some jackass(es) to set off bombs in a public place? An 8-year old kid was killed in Boston Monday, after two bombs went off near the Boston Marathon. Why?

    12) People like that deserve to be executed on national TV; would that be a deterrent? Couldn't hurt.

    11) One of the stranger customs in sports is 11am Patriots’ Day game at Fenway Park every April. Patriots Day is a state holiday in Massachusetts and Maine; they run the Boston Marathon that day, the Bruins usually play a home game that night and the Red Sox play at 11 that morning.

I’m wondering if the visiting team has to approve that on the schedule before they’re slotted in to play that day?

    10) Interesting debate on Twitter Monday as to who the best #10 in NFL history is; most said Fran Tarkenton; some had Eli Manning and a few down south had Steve Bartkowski. Eli still has some work to do, could wind up as the #1 guy there, but I’d go with Tarkenton right now.

    9) Mets got snowed out for second day in a row; their day/night twinbill might get snowed out Tuesday in Denver.

    8) You know you're on tilt when Peter Bourjos homers against you in Fantasy baseball; thats just not right. Guy can't hit.

    7) Masters TV ratings were up 26% from LY; have to think Eldrick Woods’ drama helped bigtime on Saturday, then the closeness of the finish late Sunday, coupled with gloomy conditions, made for interesting viewing. Wonder what ratings would’ve been if Eldrick withdrew Saturday morning?

    6) Nike is actually selling “Leon Sandcastle” Chiefs jerseys before the NFL Draft. Sandcastle is the fictional character played by Deion Sanders in Nike commercials this past winter/spring. Who would buy one?

    5) Nerlens Noel, Otto Porter are latest college stars to bolt school early; no one stays in school long anymore. I’m thinking kids should be able to go right from high school to the NBA. Seems like a better system that way.

    4) Jeff Van Gundy was saying Sunday how there is a stigma attached to NBA prospects who play four years of college ball; in other words, if you were any good, you’d have come out of college early. If that’s true, and he would know, then that’s pretty freakin’ sad.

    3) If the Utah Jazz miss the playoffs by a game, they’ll look back on two home games they lost to the Clippers by total of three points, games they led at one time by 14-19 points. It’s a long NBA season, has to sting to miss the playoffs by such a narrow margin.

    2) A 42-year old fan shot and killed himself on the infield at the NASCAR race in Texas Saturday, a race that was sponsored by the National Rifle Association. Damn.

    1) As if this world isn’t bizarre enough, my father reports that at church this week, the priest asked women to bring their purses with them when they came up to the altar for communion, since thieves are pilfering purses during Communion at various churches around town. Seriously.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

      Lookahead spot

The Milwaukee Bucks have known for some time just which team they’ll tackle in the opening round of the NBA Playoffs. Unfortunately for the Bucks, that team is the defending champion Miami Heat. Milwaukee, which wound up eighth in the Eastern Conference, will open the postseason in South Beach at the end of the week.

The Bucks close the schedule with a tough test Wednesday, visiting the Oklahoma City Thunder – the top team in the Western Conference. This matchup means little to Milwaukee, which will likely be planning ahead for the Heat. The Thunder, on the other hand, could have the No. 1 seed in the West hanging in the balance versus the Bucks and won’t leave anything to chance, no matter the spread.

      Letdown spot

The NHL playoff picture is taking shape with just under two weeks remaining in the regular season. It’s a big week for the Montreal Canadiens, who sit second overall in the Eastern Conference standings. The Habs are holding off a late-season charge from the Boston Bruins and have a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown with the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday.

Following that monster matchup, the Canadiens immediately fly back to Montreal to prepare for the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday. Tampa Bay isn’t going to make the postseason cut but is still a very dangerous team, especially if the Habs come out flat. The Bolts are second in the NHL in scoring - 3.1 goals per game – and have played Montreal tough this year, giving up a two-goal lead in the third and going to a shootout to lose 4-3 in both meetings.

      Schedule spot

The New York Mets have raised eyebrows in the National League with their strong start to the season. New York is 7-4 (+2.05 units) heading into a four-game road set with the Colorado Rockies starting Monday. Series at Coors Field are especially taxing on road teams due to the fatigue factor in the thin air.

Following that series with Colorado, the Mets are back on the plane heading home for a series opener against the Washington Nationals Friday. Last season, New York managed to take two of three games in Coors Field only to get swept 3-0 by the Houston Astros, of all teams, in the following series.

Cory Schneider should be healthy after battling the flu last week and likely will start against St. Louis. The Blues are looking to halt a two-game slide and improve on their precarious playoff position. They trail sixth-place Minnesota by one point but are only one point ahead of ninth-place Columbus.

St. Louis has not scored more than two goals in any of its lasts five games, relying on the stellar play of netminders Brian Elliott and rookie Jake Allen to begin the month on a six-game winning streak. Elliott posted three straight shutouts before allowing two goals on 24 shots in a 2-0 loss to Chicago on Sunday. Allen has lost three of his last four starts but is 9-4-0. Vancouver lost to the Blues 4-3 in a shootout at home on Feb. 17 but defeated St. Louis 3-2 on March 19. The Blues are 9-8-1 at Scottrade Center and have one win in their last four home games.

                            ABOUT THE CANUCKS (24-12-6, 16-21 over/under):
Brothers Henrik and Daniel Sedin have 18 points combined this month. Defenseman Jason Garrison has six points in April to raise his season total to 14. Vancouver is 3-for-10 on the power play in its last three games and 5-for-19 in its last six. Prior to Schneider’s flu, Luongo had not started since March 18 - an 11-game span. Ryan Kesler scored twice on Monday for three goals and six points in four games since returning from a broken foot. Roy scored his first goal with the Canucks in the first period of Monday’s victory.

                            ABOUT THE BLUES (23-16-2, 19-18 over/under):
Jaroslav Halak returned to the ice but is still at least a week away from returning. T.J. Oshie is unlikely to play against Vancouver after missing eight games with a foot injury. Oshie, listed as day-to-day, would provide a boost (20 points in 30 games) to St. Louis’ anemic offense. No Blues player has more than four points this month and leading scorer Chris Stewart has been held to two points in eight games. Rookie Vladimir Tarasenko has one assist in April and has not looked the same since suffering a concussion in February.
