    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Former NBA ref Ed Rush quit as head of Pac-12 officials, after it became public that he put a bounty on Arizona coach Sean Miller. In the PR world, this is called damage control.

-- Jaromir Jagr scored the only goal in Boston's 1-0 win Thursday; the last time he scored a goal in a 1-0 game, it was 1997.

-- First three players on Mel Kiper's big board for NFL Draft are offensive linemen; not every year you can say that.

-- Detroit Lions' kicker Jason Hanson retired after 21 years in the Motor City. 21 years with one team is quite a run.

-- Denver lost Danilo Gallinari to a knee injury Thursday night, costly with the playoffs coming up in two weeks.
-- Baylor won the NIT, pounding Iowa 74-54.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

    13) Is winning postseason NIT a predictor of future success? History tells us no. Of the last ten NIT champs, only three made the NCAAs the following year and of those three, only ’08 West Virginia team (lost in Sweet 16) won a game in the tournament the next season.

    12) Wichita State won the NIT two years ago, but that was with a different group of kids than they have now. Shockers have six junior college players on this year's roster.

    11) On the flip side, loser of the postseason NIT has made the NCAAs four of last five years, with ’10 Baylor and ’11 North Carolina losing in the regional finals.

    10) Old Big East will now be called American Athletic Conference (the AAC), which puts it ahead of ACC in alphabetical listings, if that matters.

    9) Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cardinals in 16 innings Wednesday, game that ended around 3:15am in my house; then they flew all night and got to Milwaukee at dawn. Extra inning baseball games are excellent.

    8) Houston Astros are only 4th team since 1910 with 15+ strikeouts in consecutive nine-inning games.

    7) Courtesy of ESPN.com and Elias, most strikeouts for any big league team thru the first three games of a season: ‘13 Astros: 43, ‘66 California Angels: 36, ‘07 Braves: 34, ‘61 Phillies: 33.

    6) We talked about Yu Darvish getting 27 swings/misses in his great game Tuesday; Matt Harvey of the Mets got 24 misses on 46 San Diego swings Wednesday night. That’s a lot of swings and misses.

    5) Former Rutgers coach Mike Rice bagged a $100,000 bonus for finishing the season, even though he was suspended for a month during the season.

Seems like it the AD threw Rice a $100K severance package by not firing him in December. It might be hard for the AD to keep his job now, bad news for an athletic department heading for the Big Dozen next year.

    4) OK, so if Jimmy Fallon is taking Jay Leno’s place, why does it have to wait until February? Why can’t they just do it next week? It’s a freakin’ talk show, just switch studios and be on with it.

    3) Clippers have 50 wins for first time in franchise history; previous record was 49, set by the ’74-’75 Buffalo Braves, a team with Ernie D and Bob McAdoo, two bigtime stars at the time.

    2) Tweet of the Day from CBSSports.com's Gregg Doyle: "Got a text from ex-Indiana manager under Knight: 'That same Rutgers video played out, over & over, at Assembly Hall.'" Alrighty then.

    1) St Louis Rams need to retire Kurt Warner's #13 this season, maybe if they get a Thursday night home game on NFL Network, but #13 needs to be in the rafters at the Jones Dome.

Georgia Dome a haven for NCAAB over bettors

The NCAA tournament moves to Atlanta for the Final Four, setting up shop in the Georgia Dome for Saturday’s semifinals and Monday’s national title game.

The 1.6 million square-foot venue is no stranger to college basketball, having hosted numerous conference tournaments and two Final Four events in 2002 and 2007.

Playing in these massive football stadiums can sometimes wreak havoc on any given teams’ shooting, but the Georgia Dome has become a haven for high scores in recent years – subsequently paying out big for over bettors.

Since 2009, there have been 27 college basketball games in the Georgia Dome. Those games played to a combined 15-12 over/under mark. Teams also combined to shoot 43.4 percent from the field and 33.4 percent from 3-point range in those contests.

Shrinking that sample size from 2011 to 2013, teams shot just under 44 percent from the floor and knocked down 32.3 percent of their 3-point attempts but tipped the scales in favor of the over with an 11-5 over/under tick in those 16 games.

Looking back over the past two seasons, over bettors have really loved games in the Georgia Dome. Teams hit 48 percent from the field, shot better than 36 percent from distance and topped the total in each of the past five games inside the Georgia Dome, including big-school bouts between Kansas and Michigan State, and Kentucky and Duke as part of the Champions Classic this past November.

As for the past two Final Four weekends held in the Georgia Dome, both 2002 and 2007 produced 2-1 over/under records in their three contests with the national title game going 1-1 over/under.

This weekend’s four contenders have a combined 10-6 over/under record in the tournament, with Louisville playing over in all four games and Syracuse posting a 1-3 over/under count. The Cardinals take on Wichita State (3-1 O/U) with a total of 133 points while Syracuse battles Michigan (2-2 O/U) with a total of 131.

          Friday, April 5

George Mason was 30-43 from foul line in Game 2's 73-66 win, after its 81-73 road loss in Game 1; Santa Clara was 13-22 from line, 5-22 on arc, as star Foster was just 2-10 from arc, after being 5-11 in Game 1. GMU played only two starters 30+ minutes in Game 2; Broncos played three starters 33+ minutes. Santa Clara is playing fourth road game in last 12 nights- they scored 75+ points in each of last six wins, 67 or less in last five setbacks. Four of last five Santa Clara games, 12 of last 16 Mason games went over total, but teams playing third time in five nights- they all know each others' plays, shouldn't be many easy baskets. Patriots won four of last five home games, with only loss in OT to Towson.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before the Final Four starts on Saturday, the CBI tournament reaches its climax on Friday.

George Mason and Santa Clara clash in the third and final game of the College Basketball Invitational final and one of the most significant trends in college basketball will be front and center.

GMU is scoring 72.3 points a game and allowing 69.6 points a game during the run. The Patriots put up an average of 64.4 points and yielded 62.4 in their 21 contests prior to the outburst.

George Mason hosts Santa Clara, which has played over in four of its last five contests, in Fairfax, VA in Game Three. The over is 1-1 in the final. The Mirage is the only Vegas book with a line. George Mason opened as a 1-point favorite. The total is set at 148.5.

The Patriots are coming off a 73-66 victory in the second game, while the Broncos took the opener 81-73.
