  • Preview: Nets (49-33) at Bulls (45-37)

    Date: May 02, 2013 8:00 PM EDT

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Bulls looked like they were ready to eliminate Deron Williams and the Brooklyn Nets and move on to the second round of the playoffs.

They're still in position to do it. Things are just a little more interesting.

With a 3-2 lead, the Bulls will try again to wrap it up when the series shifts back to the United Center on Thursday.

The Nets seemed all but out of it before a 110-91 victory at the Barclays Center on Monday night. Now, the Bulls appear to be reeling as they try to avoid a decisive seventh game at Brooklyn on Saturday.

Point guard Kirk Hinrich might miss his second straight game because of a bruised left calf, and Luol Deng and Taj Gibson were sick Wednesday and stayed home. Joakim Noah has battled plantar fasciitis in his right foot - the same issue dogging Joe Johnson, except it's in his left foot.

The most pressing matter for Brooklyn is trying to find a way to win in Chicago, something it hasn't done this season. The Nets dropped both regular season matchups there and lost Games 3 and 4.

``Number one, the Bulls. Number two, we just did a poor job of closing,' Nets interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said. ``The first game there we didn't get a shot. We had the ball with whatever it was, a three-, four-point lead and we didn't get a shot our last three possessions. And obviously Game Four, up 14 with less than three minutes to go would be a pretty good place to be you would think. So twice we did a very poor job of finishing. I don't think there's any magic to the building. I think it's the guys the white uniforms and the fact that we've done a poor job closing out for sure.'

Now, they're trying to hang on.

Only eight NBA teams have overcome a 3-1 deficit, and the odds that the Nets would add to that number seemed slim at best after Game 4.

``I think we've been confident throughout the whole series regardless of whether they were up 3-1,' Johnson said. ``The series is not over man until the first team gets four wins so at this point we've still got a shot. We understand that we've got a big task ahead of us and that's going to Chicago and getting a win.'

They blew a 14-point lead in the closing minutes of regulation and lost 142-134 in triple overtime, with Nate Robinson going off for Chicago down the stretch. He scored 34 points, the most by a Bulls reserve in a playoff game, and all but five came after the third quarter.

But without Hinrich on Monday, it was a different story.

Robinson started and was unable to provide a similar spark. He did score 20 points but had a tough time slowing Williams. The offense was a bit out of sync, too, and Hinrich could have helped in both areas.

The veteran guard did not practice Wednesday, and neither he nor coach Tom Thibodeau declared him out for Thursday. The way he was hobbling around, Hinrich hardly looked like a player who was about ready to suit up even though he said he has seen some improvement.

``I'm just going to try to play if I can,' he said. ``That's my goal. Whether I'll be able to reach it or not ...'

He's still in pain and he needs to get the swelling down more before he can return to the court. If he's not ready to go, it's not clear how the Bulls will adjust.

They could simply try again with Robinson at the point and hope for a better result this time. Another possibility might be starting Marco Belinelli at the point, with Jimmy Butler guarding Williams, and bringing Robinson off the bench.

    Thibodeau wasn't tipping his hand.

The fact that Deng and Williams were sick only adds to the Bulls' concerns, and then there's the Derrick Rose saga. He hasn't played since he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in last year's playoff opener against Philadelphia, and the outside criticism has mounted, with some fans and analysts questioning why he hasn't returned even though the knee is structurally sound and saying he's done the team a disservice by not announcing one way or another if he would be back this season.

``There is a big difference between the time of injury that he's had and all these other injuries,' Thibodeau said. ``And we certainly appreciate what all the other guys are doing, but Derrick has had a very serious injury. It requires time. He's 24 years old. We're not going to rush him back. When he's completely comfortable, that's when we want him out there. If that means we wait another game, if that means we wait until next year, so be it. We want him completely comfortable and we're not going to make that mistake.'

Hinrich also defended Rose, saying, ``You give a guy who has that type of character the benefit of the doubt. We know that he's such a big part of this organization and this team that we trust he's making the right decision for that and for himself.'

    • Preview: Nuggets (57-25) at Warriors (47-35)

      Date: May 02, 2013 10:30 PM EDT

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kicks in the ankles. Forearms to the throat. Elbows at the head. Illegal screens. Hard shoves. Bloody lips. Puffy eyes. Body bruises. Some even done by ``hit men.'

Denver Nuggets coach George Karl thought the reaction to his team's Game 5 win over the Warriors sounded like a ``different movie than I'm watching.' Golden State's Mark Jackson defended his accusations of dirty play Wednesday, and players on both sides practically promised more physicality.

Bust out the bandages, body wraps and ice packs.

``I think it's just getting started,' Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried said.

As if there haven't been enough emotions swirling inside ear-piercing Oracle Arena in the playoffs, Jackson ratcheted up the rhetoric after the Nuggets roughed up point guard Stephen Curry to send the first-round series back to the Bay Area. The Warriors will try to close out Denver again Thursday night in front of their frenzied fans, while the Nuggets need to finally find a way to take their style - whatever that may be - on the road to return the series to the Mile High City for a decisive Game 7.

``They'll be physical again. They'll try to beat up Steph Curry. They'll try to set illegal screens. They'll try to chuck him when he goes down the lane,' Jackson said before practice at the team's headquarters in downtown Oakland. ``Other than that, I'm not sure what to expect out of them.'

      What else is there, really?

The Nuggets never trailed, piled up points in the paint, jumpstarted their transition game, curbed Curry's production and bothered big man Andrew Bogut in Tuesday night's 107-100 win in Denver that had everybody still talking a day later. Basically, they returned to form - the same kind the Warriors have showed all season - that helped them win an NBA franchise-best 57 games before a three-game skid in the playoffs put them on the brink of another early exit.

``If there's a scorecard, if we're in a boxing fight right now, they're winning the fight,' Karl said. ``OK, we won round one, maybe our first round (Tuesday) night. I'm going to tell you, I'll go to any arbiter right now and show the dirty shots. They're winning.'

The key for both teams could be keeping their composure.

The Nuggets have yet to bring that physical, frenetic and flashy style to blue-collar Oakland, where the gold-shirt wearing sellout crowd has been one of the NBA's loudest home environments in these playoffs and carried Curry and company to victories in Games 3 and 4.

Given the sudden sights and sounds of this series, the environment could be even wilder now.

Jackson, a former point guard of a New York Knicks team often accused of over-the-line tactics against opponents, seemed to be backhandedly politicking officials when he said Denver sent ``hit men' out on Curry during Game 5. Specifically, Jackson repeatedly mentioned Faried's foul in the first half, when the Denver forward stuck his right leg out and moved his body while Curry ran through traffic.

The second-year coach, upset Curry never shot a free throw in 42 minutes, even suggested he had ``inside information' from somebody who did not ``co-sign' for Denver's more physical game plan. When pressed about the allegation, Jackson declined to say where the knowledge came from.

``I was even caught on tape and asked, `What would I do if I was playing against (Curry) and he heated up?' I'd be physical with him,' Jackson said. ``That's understandable. It's not hypocritical. There's no part of me that said I'd be dirty with him. You take an attempt to kick him with your foot, with his foot, that's not a basketball play. That's a cheap shot.'

Curry, who sprained his left ankle in Game 2 and has had two surgeries on his right ankle, stopped short of saying Faried - or anybody - targeted his ankles. After watching replays, Curry just said: ``It is interesting. I don't know what his intentions were.'

The Warriors nearly rallied from 22 points down behind their own physical play.

Bogut gave a two-handed shove to Faried's neck after his hard screen on Curry in the first half, drawing a flagrant foul, and Draymond Green was whistled for a flagrant foul for body-checking Faried in the second half. Karl even jokingly asked whether Green played ``football or basketball at Michigan State.'

Green also gave Denver's Andre Miller a bloody lip and Ty Lawson took an elbow to the head. Nuggets center Kosta Koufos swatted at Curry's arms when he shot well after the whistle blew, and Denver's JaVale McGee and Warriors center Festus Ezeli each got called for illegal screens.

Faried, who won the NBA's Walter Kennedy Citizenship award for community service Wednesday, said he will not back down - and neither will anybody on the Nuggets.

``I'm a good, dirty citizen,' he quipped while holding the award at Denver's practice facility. ``I think that's what this trophy is. Yep, yep, yep. It's a little dirty. I think that's what it is.'

Jackson said he doesn't think the physical play has rattled, or will rattle, his young team.

``We're not concerned,' Jackson said. ``When we play our brand of basketball, there's no concern about guys getting out of character. We understand what we have to do.'

          • Friday's Early Tips

            May 2, 2013

            **Knicks at Celtics**

--As of late Thursday afternoon, most books were listing New York (57-30 straight up, 48-37-2 against the spread) as a 1.5-point favorite with a total of 181.5. Bettors can take the Celtics on the money line for a +105 return (risk $100 to win $105). The Knicks are favored by a half-point for first-half wagers.

--After losing the first three games of this best-of-seven series, Boston (43-43 SU, 39-44-3 ATS) has responded with back-to-back wins. The Celtics forced Game 6 by capturing a 92-86 win Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. They won outright as nine-point underdogs, hooking up money-line supporters with a payout in the +330 range (risk $100 to win $330). The 178 combined points stayed ‘under’ the 182-point total.

--Kevin Garnett was the catalyst in Boston’s Game 5 win in NYC. Garnett scored 16 points, pulled down 18 rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked a pair of shots. Jeff Green scored a team-high 18 points, while Brandon Bass and Jason Terry finished with 17 points apiece. Paul Pierce added 16 points.

--After being suspended for Game 4 and making moronic remarks about his absence in the overtime defeat at Boston, New York’s J.R. Smith was a non-factor in Game 5. The NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year made only 3-of-14 shots and had as many turnovers (two) as assists (two). Carmelo Anthony and Raymond Felton scored 22 and 21 points, respectively, in the Game 5 setback.

--Anthony is averaging 30.8 points per game in the series, but he missed 16 of his 24 shots from the field in Game 5.

--Boston has been a home underdog eight times this season, compiling a 5-3 spread record with four outright victories. The Celtics have taken the cash in four consecutive such spots.

--New York reserve forward Steve Novak is listed as ‘doubtful’ for Game 6 due to back spasms. The Marquette product is one of the Association’s best 3-point shooters. Novak averaged 6.6 points per game and buried 149 treys during the regular season. He has made 3-of-6 from behind the line in this series.

--These teams have faced each other four times this year in Boston. The Knicks are 3-1 both SU and ATS in those encounters.

--The updated series price via Sportsbook.ag: New York -1000, Boston +700. The offshore website has the Knicks with the fourth-shortest odds to win the NBA title (15/1).

--The ‘under’ is 7-1 in the last eight head-to-head meetings between these clubs, going 4-1 in this series. The lone ‘over’ came in Game 4 when the Celtics won a 97-90 decision in OT. The ‘under’ would’ve easily cashed if not for the extra session.

--The ‘under’ is 45-40-2 overall for the Knicks, 21-20-2 in their road assignments.

--The ‘over’ is 43-42-1 overall for Boston, 22-19-1 in its home games.

--Tip-off is slated for 7:05 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

            **Pacers at Hawks**

--The home team has won all five games in this series both SU and ATS. Indiana (52-34 SU, 45-41 ATS) took a 3-2 series lead by spanking Atlanta 106-83 as a 7.5-point home favorite on Wednesday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The 189 combined points slithered ‘over’ the 187.5-point total.

--Indiana power forward David West scored a game-high 24 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field in Game 5. Paul George produced 21 points (7-8 FGs), 10 rebounds and five assists, while Roy Hibbert added 18 points and nine boards. The Pacers dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Hawks 51-28.

--Atlanta (46-41 SU, 39-46-2 ATS) shot just 33.3 percent from the floor in the Game 5 defeat. Al Horford and Josh Smith tied for team-high scoring honors with 14 points apiece. Just like in Game 2 at Indiana, Smith was in foul trouble early and often in Game 5, finishing with just 25 minutes of playing time.

--For Friday’s Game 6 at Philips Arena, most spots have the Hawks favored by two with a total of 188. The Pacers are +105 on the money line. Atlanta is a one-point ‘chalk’ and the total is 94 for first-half bets.

--Smith scored a postseason career-high 29 points in leading Atlanta to a 102-91 win as a 1.5-point home favorite in Game 4. The loss was the 13th straight for Indiana in Atlanta. The Pacers haven’t tasted a victory at Philips since 2006.

--The ‘over’ has cashed at a lucrative 4-1 clip in this series to date. In nine head-to-head meetings this year, the ‘over’ owns a 7-2 record.

--The ‘over’ is 46-40-1 overall for the Hawks this year, 23-20 in their home games.

--The ‘under’ is 43-42-1 overall for the Pacers, 23-19 in their road contests.

--Sportsbook.ag’s updated series price is Indiana -800 (risk $800 to win $100) with Atlanta available for a monster +600 return (risk $100 to win $600).

            • Preview: Knicks (54-28) at Celtics (41-40)

              Date: May 03, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Celtics are looking across town for inspiration as they attempt to become the first NBA team to rally from an 0-3 deficit to win a playoff series.

Needing to win four straight games to stay alive in the playoffs, Celtics coach Doc Rivers talked to his team about the Red Sox and their comeback against the New York Yankees in the 2004 AL championship series. Celtics guard Jason Terry invoked former Red Sox first baseman Kevin Millar and said, ``If we win this next game, then anything's possible.'

``We just know every game for us is a Game 7,' Terry said after beating the New York Knicks 92-86 on Wednesday night to cut their deficit in the best-of-seven series to 3-2. ``It's all about being resilient. Do you pack up your things and go home or do you want to play another day? You got guys like Kevin (Garnett) and Paul (Pierce) who've been in a lot of playoff series, and everyone takes a life of its own.

``Obviously being down 3-0 ... we could have folded shop,' Terry said. ``Nobody in here is going to quit.'

The Red Sox comeback is legendary in Boston, and not only because it came against the hated Yankees. After losing the first three games of the series - including a 19-8, Game 3 loss at Fenway Park - Millar told anyone who would listen, ``Don't let us win today.'

As Millar predicted, Pedro Martinez pitched Game 5 and Curt Schilling won Game 6 and then, ``Game 7, anything can happen.' The Red Sox beat the Yankees and went on to sweep St. Louis to win the World Series.

``We're well aware of what happened' with the Red Sox, said Terry, who has only been with the Celtics one season. ``If this happens, it'll be very similar. I'm very familiar with what they did and the history they made. Is that a motivating factor for us? It helps, but that alone is not going to win the series for us.'

Only three times in NBA history has a team rallied from an 0-3 deficit to even force a seventh game: the Knicks did it in 1951 against the Rochester Royals, the Denver Nuggets came back against Utah in `94 and Portland did against Dallas in 2003. All of them lost in the seventh game.

If the Celtics can win Game 6 on Friday night in Boston, the decisive seventh game in New York on Sunday. Garnett said there won't be any consolation in just making it close

``Next game we lose, this is it,' he said. ``So I don't know what everybody is talking about getting comfortable or feeling good. It's not like we evened it up and we're going back home. We're down 3-2. So I don't know what being comfortable is about.'

The Celtics have won an NBA-record 17 titles, the last in 2008, so they don't have nearly the baggage of the Red Sox team that was trying to end an 86-year title drought. In fact, it's the Knicks who are struggling against history: They haven't won a playoff series since 2000, and their last championship came in 1973.

So most of the pressure would seem to be on them.

``We didn't get it done last night, and the mood of the team is that `Hey, there's a sense of urgency,'' coach Mike Woodson said. ``It's not going to be easy by any means going to Boston and getting a win there, but again, we still control our own destiny. We have won in Boston, so we've got to see what we're made of now.'

              • Preview: Pacers (49-32) at Hawks (44-38)

ATLANTA (AP) - After a dismal playoff performance, the Atlanta Hawks decided it was best to spend some time away from each other.

The team arrived at Philips Arena for what was expected to be a regular practice and film session Thursday, a chance to prepare for a must-win game against the Indiana Pacers. Instead, coach Larry Drew spoke briefly with the players and sent them home.

                No practice. No watching film.

``I know our guys are not just physically fatigued but I think they're mentally fatigued as well,' Drew said. ``I wanted to just allow these guys to kind of get away, kind of regroup, kind of recharge a little bit as we're getting ready for Game 6. I brought them in and spoke to them. But I just really felt the best thing today was to get away from it, get away from us, get away from everybody and get ready for tomorrow.'

The Hawks certainly weren't ready for Game 5.

Indiana reasserted the physical dominance it showed in the first two games, romping to a 106-83 win and a 3-2 lead in the series. The Pacers can wrap things up with a win Friday night in Atlanta.

More troubling for the Hawks was not only losing the game, but losing their cool. Three players - Josh Smith, Jeff Teague and Ivan Johnson - picked up technical fouls for griping to the officials. Two more technicals were whistled for defensive 3-second calls.

In all, it was a total collapse by a team that had played with such energy and control during the two previous games in Atlanta.

Now, the Hawks can only hope to extend the streak of the home team winning every game in the series, which would force a Game 7 at Indianapolis on Sunday. It's still a rather bleak scenario - Atlanta has lost all three games in Indy by an average of more than 18 points - but that's the only path they have.

``There does come a point where it stops being about X's and O's,' Drew said. ``That's where we are. It's a two-game series and obviously we want to extend it by winning. But X's and O's, it won't be about that. It will be about how hard we play between those lines, how hard we compete.'

The Pacers are in a much more enviable position, obviously, knowing they can win the series without winning a game down south.

But coach Frank Vogel would like to see his young team take an important step in its development process by stealing one on the road. Indiana is still finding its way in the postseason, which was evident during its two losses in Atlanta, one of them a 21-point blowout that was over by halftime. This may be the last time the Pacers have a home-court edge, so they need to find a way to get it done outside of their cozy, raucous fieldhouse.

More daunting, Indiana hasn't won in Atlanta since 2006, a 13-game losing streak that provides another mental stumbling block.

``You can't look at it like we've lost 13 in a row there or two in a row there,' Vogel said before the team boarded its flight. ``We have to look at it like they're a different team at home. They're really, really good at home and we've made some adjustments that we hope will help.'

Vogel changed the rotations for Game 5, keeping some starters with the second unit to provide extra scoring punch. David West played his best game of the series, scoring 24 points, while Paul George added 21 points and 10 rebounds.

But the biggest change came at the defensive end, where the Pacers finally looked like one of the NBA's stingiest teams. They held the Hawks to 33 percent shooting - by far their worst showing of the series - and rarely gave Atlanta a decent look. Smith and Al Horford - the main inside threats - combined to shoot 10 of 30. Guard Jeff Teague, the catalyst for the offense, was a dismal 3 of 16. No one on the Hawks scored more than 14 points.

``I don't know if they did anything differently,' said Atlanta Kyle Korver, who never found much of an opening for his specialty, the 3-point shot. ``They just played at a high level. That was the best game they've played. We didn't get any easy looks, even on the fast breaks. We had a lot of tough layups. We had some close shots, but they were still contested. We never really got into a good offensive rhythm.'

With each missed shot, the Hawks bickered more and more with the officials.

The two things Drew had preached before the game - composure and playing smart - went totally out the window in the second half as the Pacers pulled away.

``We went into a hostile environment knowing that Indiana would come out and give us their best shot,' the coach said. ``We have to be able to respond to it. The way to respond is not to lose our composure, and we did. We lost our composure.'

Atlanta actually shot two more free throws than the Pacers in Game 5, which makes the meltdown even more perplexing to Drew.

``The way we went at the officials, it's like we're playing the blame game again,' he said. ``I thought we got some great whistles. We got to the foul line as many times as they did. It wasn't the whistles. It was the way we responded. That's not the way to get it done in the playoffs. You've got to be much tougher mentally, you've got to be much stronger, you've got to be thick-skinned. You can't let things rattle you.'

Maybe some time away from each other will help.

                • Preview: Thunder (60-22) at Rockets (45-37)

                  Date: May 03, 2013 9:30 PM EDT

HOUSTON (AP) - Kevin Durant has scored 74 points combined in Oklahoma City's past two games against the Houston Rockets.

The problem is that his teammates haven't stepped up to take some pressure off the superstar, and the Rockets have won both of those games.

Houston has cut the Thunder's lead to 3-2 in the series, and is looking to become the first team in NBA history to overcome a 0-3 series deficit to win a best-of-seven playoff series.

They'll likely continue to send two or three defenders at Durant and dare other players to beat them in Game 6 Friday night in Houston.

Though it hasn't happened in the past two games, Thunder coach Scott Brooks is confident Durant will get more scoring help on Friday.

``We're getting open shots,' Brooks said. ``If we can get those same open shots, I feel very confident our guys are going to step up and hit those shots. Those are the same shots that they've made their entire careers.'

Rockets coach Kevin McHale raved about Durant and said they'll continue to try different looks to slow him down, even if it means leaving other capable scorers unguarded.

``When you double team a guy at the top of the key where he has the ball a lot, someone's going to be open,' he said. ``You've just got to take the temperature of what's happening and how hot you think Durant is ... and you've just got to sometimes live with it.'

While Oklahoma City is without All-Star Russell Westbrook for the rest of the season, the Rockets are dealing with several health issues as well. Point guard Jeremy Lin has missed the past two games with a bruised chest muscle. His status for Friday's game is still up in the air, but McHale said he was feeling better Thursday.

Carlos Delfino's status is also questionable after not playing in the second half because of a sore left foot. The Rockets also said on Thursday that star James Harden had been diagnosed with strep throat, but was expected to play on Friday.

He bounced back from a tough performance in Game 4 to score 31 points on Wednesday to lead Houston to the 107-100 win.

McHale was impressed with Harden's work on Wednesday, especially considering he was struggling with his illness and lacked his normal energy.

``Every day is not perfect,' McHale said. ``Being in that situation and having some tough games, it bothers you and you're bound and determined to come back the next night and play better.'

The Rockets were also helped in Game 5 by the Thunder's decision to intentionally foul 7-foot center Omer Asik for an almost two-minute span in the fourth quarter. The career 54 percent shooter made 8 of 12 free throws to push the lead to 101-92 before Oklahoma City gave up on that plan.

Brooks said they did it because the team wasn't playing good defense and he hoped to change the rhythm of the game.

``I thought that would give us a chance,' Brooks said. ``Unfortunately, he stepped up. Give him credit ... something I go back on, we have to play better defense. We don't want to get into that if we don't have to. We would rather play the way we want to play, solid defense for 48 minutes.'

McHale called Asik's free throw shooting a big part of the Rockets win, and said that he'd got some tutoring in the area from former Houston assistant coach and general manager Carroll Dawson.

``He practices them all the time,' McHale said. ``He's been doing a great job. Earlier in the fall, Carroll Dawson really worked with him on changing his technique a little bit. He's been working on it and working on it and he's getting more confident.'

Some Houston players were irked at Durant for saying ``hack-a-whatever-his-name-is' when referring to the tactic on Asik.

``He knew his name,' Chandler Parsons said. ``The guy has had two double doubles in a row. He's one of the best centers in the NBA. He knows his name. If he didn't know, he does for sure now.'

Brooks wasn't as concerned about his tactic on Asik not working as he was about why his team keeps struggling on defense in the third quarter. Houston scored 38 points in the third quarter of Game 4 and 37 points on Wednesday night.

``I know that's not who we are because it hasn't been who we are for a lot of years,' Brooks said.

The Rockets insist that they're just having fun and that all the pressure is on top-seeded Oklahoma City, because as the eight-seed they weren't expected to win.

``In our minds still nobody's giving us a shot,' Parsons said. ``But it doesn't really matter, it matters what we believe in that locker room and that we believe in ourselves. We're fully confident that we're going to win tomorrow night and we're going to take the series.'

Since most of these young Rockets don't have much playoff experience, they've been leaning on the vast experience of McHale, who won three titles in the 1980s with the Celtics. He doesn't discuss Houston's chance to make history with this young team, he just asks his players to focus on the next game.

``Anything could happen, that's the beautiful thing about basketball,' he said. ``That's why you go play. What happened in the past doesn't make any difference. We had great effort last night and we just need great effort again.'

Of course, the Thunder, who reached the NBA Finals last season, aren't lacking in confidence either.

Oklahoma City's players weren't available on Thursday, but Kendrick Perkins made it clear that he believes the Thunder are in control of the series with a tweet that included a link to his Boston Celtics championship ring.

``You think we stressed out right now,' he asked on Twitter. ``Y'all crazy we got heart over here in OKC.'

                  Then he tweeted again.

``If the playoffs was meant to be easy then everybody could win a ring,' he tweeted. ``We up 3-2 and we not looking back. Great position to be in.'

                  • Preview: Clippers (56-26) at Grizzlies (56-26)

                    Date: May 03, 2013 9:30 PM EDT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Grizzlies have played the Los Angeles Clippers enough the past year to know that nothing is over until the final buzzer.

Sure, Blake Griffin is questionable with a sprained ankle and Chris Paul has a left thumb bruised. But the resilient Clippers are deep and talented.

That is why the Grizzlies are focusing only on themselves and their defense, the inside games of Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, along with the work ethic they call grit and grind. They are 3-0 in Game 6s, and they lead the Clippers 3-2 going into Friday night's contest in this first-round, best-of-seven series.

But Memphis has lost both Game 7s the franchise has played in the past two playoffs - at Oklahoma City in 2011 and on the Grizzlies' own court a year ago to these same Clippers.

``We've had to deal with just growing pains I think in the playoffs, and hopefully all those experiences will help us come tomorrow and we'll be able to get it done,' Grizzlies guard Mike Conley said Thursday.

The Grizzlies are on the verge of rallying from an 0-2 deficit to win a seven-game series, which has been done 15 times with Oklahoma City the last to do it - beating San Antonio in the Western Conference finals last year. In the process, the Grizzlies have won three straight postseason games for the first time and have their first series lead since being up 2-1 on Oklahoma City in 2011.

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins is pitching this as a two-game series that has the potential to be one if his Grizzlies take care of business before a sold-out crowd. He likes how his Grizzlies have prepared and played with discipline since losing the opener in Los Angeles.

``Now we're on the cusp of maybe moving on,' Hollins said.

Griffin will likely be a game-time decision Friday night with the sprained right ankle that kept him on the bench in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night's 103-93 win by Memphis in Los Angeles. He has been receiving constant treatment and said Thursday that his ankle feels better before the Clippers caught a flight to Memphis.

Paul had his left hand bandaged after that loss but plans to play. He matched his postseason high with 35 points in that loss but says he has to do a better job getting his teammates involved. If Griffin can't play, Paul said they will have to use a committee approach and may have to go small.

The Clippers do know they can win in Memphis. They took Game 1 in last year's series chewing away a big Memphis' lead, took Game 7 by a score of 82-72 and won both games during the regular season in Memphis to grab home-court advantage for this series as the No. 4 seed between teams with the same records.

``We got to go there, win there,' Paul said. ``We've shown the ability to do it before. We know it's going to be rowdy in there. We knew that Game 6 was going to be a close-out game for somebody. We just hoped it wouldn't be an opportunity for them, but it is. We just got to make it work.'

Paul could use some help getting the Clippers' offense going again.

They averaged 101.2 points a game in the regular season and scored 112 points in taking Game 1. Since then, the Grizzlies have held Los Angeles to 87.7 points over the past four games thanks to Gasol, the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year, in the middle and Tony Allen and Tayshaun Prince and Quincy Pondexter helping stifle the Clippers' shooters.

``They've outworked us I think the last few games, and that's been the most frustrating thing overall,' Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said.

The Grizzlies struggled a year ago hosting Game 7 with a packed FedExForum cranking the emotions up to a new level. Tuning out the noise and playing under control will be a must.

``The adrenaline's going to be pumping I know,' Allen said. ``I just want guys, me personally just me personally, I want to keep my composure, stay within myself and just take it as a game where we can close out and stay with what we've got intact.'

The Grizzlies have enough experience on the roster to help manage both the expectations and the intensity. Prince, a trade pickup Jan. 30, won an NBA title with the Pistons in 2004 and an Olympic gold medal in 2008. Guard Keyon Dooling has played 53 postseason games himself, and Gasol won a silver medal himself last summer in the London Olympics with Spain.

Gasol insists the mindset must remain the same as when the Grizzlies trailed 0-2 in this series.

``We're just a step closer,' Gasol said. ``When we were down 2-zero, our margin of error was really low. Now we have to have the same mindset of trying to be a little better and polish the stuff we did not do well on previous games and try to do it a little better in Game 6.'

                        • Bulls-Nets, Game 7

                          May 3, 2013

The first Game 7 to take place in the postseason happens at the Barclays Center on Saturday night. The Bulls were cruising along by owning a 3-1 series advantage after rallying past the Nets in last Saturday's epic Game 4 triple-overtime triumph. One week later, Brooklyn is ready to throw the knock-out punch after grabbing the previous two games to even things up at 3-3.

The Bulls are playing at a sick pace, literally. Luol Deng sat out Thursday's 95-92 home setback as one-point underdogs with symptoms of meningitis, one of several Chicago players that were under the weather. Nate Robinson wasn't 100% either, as the Bulls' electric guard scored 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting, while Marco Belinelli unexpectedly led Chicago with 22 points in place of the injured Kirk Hinrich. Deng didn't make the trip to Brooklyn, while Hinrich tries to return for Game 7 after missing two games with a calf injury.

The Nets scorched the Bulls' defense in the opening half of Game 6 by dropping 60 points. However, Brooklyn's offense slowed up in the final 24 minutes by scoring only 35 points, while the Bulls had a late opportunity to tie the game with a three-pointer in the waning seconds. 'Over' bettors had to sweat out the final minutes after a 114-point first half on a 183 ½ total. The two teams combined to score just 32 points in the third quarter, while the 'over' cashed with 25 seconds remaining on a Nazr Mohammed layup.

Now, the page turns to Saturday's pivotal Game 7, just the second for the Nets since their move from the ABA in 1976. The Nets dropped their only Game 7 appearance to the Pistons in the 2004 Eastern Conference semifinals, ending New Jersey's two-year run as conference champions.

The Bulls are playing in their 10th Game 7, with four of these decisive contests coming prior to 1989. The last time Chicago faced this situation, the Bulls lost in the opening round at Boston in 2009, but Derrick Rose was in the lineup. The former MVP has yet to suit up for a game this season following an ACL tear in the playoff opener last April, while his status is doubtful for Saturday's Game 7.

Last postseason, four Game 7's took place, as the home team won three times. In the first round, the Lakers held off the Nuggets at Staples Center, while the Clippers were the lone road team to capture a victory at Memphis. The Celtics were on both sides of the Game 7 drama by beating the 76ers in the second round, but Boston was bounced in the conference finals at Miami. Since 2010, favorites have covered five of seven times in the decisive Game 7.

The Bulls own a solid 15-2 SU record off a home loss this season, including a perfect 5-0 SU/ATS record in the underdog role. The Nets have won six of nine home games off a road victory this season, but one of those losses came to the Bulls in early April as a 5 ½-point favorite. However, Brooklyn returned to the Barclays Center playing with no rest coming off an eight-game road trip.

Brooklyn is listed as 6 ½-point favorites, but that number is slowly moving up to seven at some books. The total is set at 181 ½, as the game can be seen nationally on TNT at 8:05 PM EST.

Chicago's health coming into Game 7 is anyone's guess; Deng had scare with meningitis this week, Hinrich has a bum calf, Gibson/Robinson had flu earlier this week and star Rose hasn't played yet this year, despite practicing for over a month and having been cleared to play. In 35 years as the New Jersey Nets, they never once hosted a Game 7, but they host one in their first year in Brooklyn; Nets' three series wins all went over total, their two losses in regulation both stayed under, with Brooklyn scoring 82-76 points. Oh yeah, Noah is playing his heart out despite his having plantar fasciatis. Home favorites are 4-2 in this series. Chicago is 0-6 on road in Game 7's, in their franchise history.

Bulls vs. Nets, Game 7: What bettors need to know
                                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls vs. Brooklyn Nets (-6.5, 181.5)
                                Best-of-seven series tied 3-3

The Brooklyn Nets attempt to become the ninth team in NBA history to recover from a 3-1 deficit and win a postseason series when they host the Chicago Bulls in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference first-round series. Chicago looked to be in good shape after its epic triple-overtime victory in Game 4 but the Nets bounced back with two solid efforts, including a 95-92 win on Thursday in Game 6 in Chicago.

The big mystery is who will be healthy enough to play for the Bulls in the series finale. Forward Luol Deng missed Game 6 with an illness and it remains unclear whether he will suit up Saturday. Point guard Kirk Hinrich (calf) missed the last two games and is a game-time decision. Guard Nate Robinson and forward Taj Gibson are battling illnesses and forward Joakim Noah has been plagued for weeks with a foot injury. Meanwhile, former MVP Derrick Rose continues to sit out due to his personal concerns about his knee despite being medically cleared by the club. Brooklyn center Brook Lopez has experienced a superb series and his 17 points in Game 6 represented the first time he didn’t score at least 20. He is averaging 22.5 points.

ABOUT THE BULLS: Game 4 star Nate Robinson was so ill during Game 6 that he vomited on the bench during timeouts on multiple occasions. Robinson persevered to play nearly 42 minutes and had 18 points, second-most on the squad behind Marco Belinelli’s 22. Robinson has averaged 24 points over the past three games and has stepped up with Hinrich ailing. Forward Carlos Boozer is averaging 17.5 points and 11.2 rebounds and has four double-doubles in the series. Noah has three double-doubles while being physically hampered. “This has been a hard year, a really hard year,” Noah said after Game 6. “But I’m really proud of this team. We’re a team of fighters.”

ABOUT THE NETS: Brooklyn viewed itself as the more-talented squad when the series began and that remains the prevailing belief entering Game 7. “We feel like we’re the better team,” forward Gerald Wallace said. “We feel like we shouldn’t have gotten down 3-1. We feel like just as they won three games in a row, we can win three games in a row.” Point guard Deron Williams has put together three consecutive double-doubles after struggling in Games 2 and 3. Williams is averaging 20 points and 8.7 assists in the series. Shooting guard Joe Johnson is averaging 16.3 points despite playing with a painful foot injury.
