  • Preview: Brewers (9-8) at Padres (5-13)

    Game: 1
    Venue: PETCO Park
    Date: April 22, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

Though he's yet to really get going, Ryan Braun continues to come up big when the Milwaukee Brewers need him most.

Braun and the Brewers go for an eighth consecutive victory Monday night when they open a three-game set against the slumping San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

While Braun is mired in a 5-for-32 slump, four of those hits have left the yard - including a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth inning of Sunday's 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.

"I'm not making a lot of contact, but when I do make contact, it counts," Braun, who has 10 RBIs during the winning streak, told MLB's official website. "Lots of homers - meaningful homers. ... It's not even about me, it's about the team. We're winning games."

Despite going deep earlier in the day, Braun's frustrations caught up to him in the eighth, when he struck out looking and was ejected for tossing his bat in the air.

'Umpires are human and make mistakes," Braun said. "It was tough for me because those are the type of pitches I am trying not to swing at. But you just have to move on."

Braun, a career .313 hitter, has 20 strikeouts in 50 at_bats thus far.

'He's obviously not locked in right now," manager Ron Roenicke said. 'There are pitches that he usually hits that he's missing and fouling."

Looking to win eight straight for the first time since Aug. 5-13, 2008, Milwaukee (9-8) now tries to keep things going against the Padres (5-13).

The Brewers haven't won a series at San Diego since 2008 - that last eight-game run, oddly enough, ended in the finale of that set at Petco - and they've been shut out in three of their last four there. The lone win in that stretch was an 8-3 victory last April 30 as Braun went 4 for 5 with a career high-tying six RBIs - becoming the first player to hit three homers in one game at Petco.

"That was a good night," Roenicke said. "It's hard to win games in San Diego. They have good pitching, and they scrap and get a few runs. It's tough to score runs in San Diego - the ballpark, certainly, but also their pitching's good. And to go in there and score a lot of runs, it usually doesn't happen."

Contrary to Roenicke's remarks, San Diego hasn't proven very formidable of late. The Padres were limited to a combined two runs during a three-game sweep at San Francisco this weekend, dropping to 3-8 over their last 11 games.

"I can't put my finger on it other than to say they made pitches," manager Bud Black said after Sunday's 5-0 loss.

Losers in five straight at home, the Padres look to regroup against Kyle Lohse (0-1, 2.70 ERA), who has only issued one walk over his first three starts spanning 20 innings. The right-hander gave up three runs and six hits over seven frames Wednesday in a 4-3 walkoff win over San Francisco.

"It's a shame, when you're pitching as good as Lohse is pitching for us, to not come out of this with some wins," Roenicke said of Lohse, who carried a perfect game into the fifth. "I think he's done a great job for three games and we don't have a win for him."

Lohse is 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA over his last three starts versus San Diego.

The Padres counter with Jason Marquis (1-1, 2.41), who scattered three hits over 7 2-3 innings of one-run ball Tuesday in a 9-2 road victory over the Dodgers.

"It's always nice to get the first win out of the way," he said. "I battled, even though the numbers don't reflect that, but my fastball command wasn't where I wanted it."

Marquis is 3-8 with an ugly 6.72 ERA over his last 14 starts versus Milwaukee. Braun is 11 for 22 with five doubles against him.

    • Preview: Diamondbacks (10-8) at Giants (12-7)

      Game: 1
      Venue: AT&T Park
      Date: April 22, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

The San Francisco Giants have tormented divisional foes in the season's early going. They'll look to continue that trend Monday night when they begin a three-game series at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the only NL West opponent they've yet to play.

The Giants (12-7) improved to 8-1 against their division with Sunday's 5-0 home win over San Diego to cap a three-game sweep after being swept by Milwaukee.

San Francisco took advantage of the heavy schedule against NL West opponents last year, going 45-27 on the way to a World Series title. Arizona was the only division rival to go .500 or better against the Giants, with the two teams splitting 18 meetings.

"You need to play good baseball against your division," manager Bruce Bochy told the team's official website. "That's who you play more than anyone else."

The Giants' starting rotation was locked in against the Padres, with Madison Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito combining to allow two runs over 19 2-3 innings. Zito's seven innings sealed the sweep on Sunday, paving the way for Ryan Vogelsong's start Monday.

Vogelsong (1-1, 5.89 ERA) hasn't been stellar but is coming off his best effort of the season as he gave up three runs and five hits in seven innings in a 4-3 loss at Milwaukee on Wednesday.

"I felt a lot better, but still not perfect," he said.

Vogelsong allowed 13 runs over 6 2-3 innings in his last two starts against the Diamondbacks after posting a 2.05 ERA in his previous four in the series.

The Diamondbacks (10-8) snared just their second win in six tries with their 5-4 victory at Colorado on Sunday, ending the Rockies' eight-game winning streak.

Continuing to give Arizona's offense a lift was rookie Didi Gregorius, who connected on his second home run and also sparked the decisive rally with a single in the ninth. Gerardo Parra's sacrifice fly ultimately pushed across the go-ahead run.

The 23-year-old shortstop started the season on the disabled list because of a sprained right elbow suffered in spring training, but is 6 for 11 in his first three games.

"He sees the ball well," manager Kirk Gibson said of Gregorius, who Arizona received from Cincinnati in a three-team deal in December. "He has a real good approach with two outs. He's a tough out. He doesn't surprise me. We thought a lot of him obviously."

Left-hander Wade Miley (2-0, 2.79) takes the ball looking to continue a strong start to the season.

Against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, Miley yielded three runs and four hits over 6 2-3 innings in a 4-3 loss, but didn't get the decision. He carried a three-run lead into the seventh but was pulled after walking in a run with two outs.

"He was great," Gibson said. "He just didn't throw the ball where he wanted to when he needed to in the seventh inning."

All three of Miley's career starts against the Giants came last year, when he went 1-2 with a 3.60 ERA.

San Francisco's offense saw encouraging developments Sunday, with Buster Posey hitting his first home run of the year and Pablo Sandoval in the lineup. Sandoval left in the seventh inning Saturday because of a pitch fouled off his ankle, but was 2 for 4 Sunday and drove in his team-leading 17th run.

Posey is 4 of 7 with a homer and double against Miley while Sandoval is just 1 for 9.

      • rmadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- First round matchups in NBA playoffs are generally not interesting; if you're a Bucks' fan, how do you get excited about three more beatings from the Heat? At least in the NHL playoffs, #8 seeds have a chance.

-- Former Maryland PG Pe'Shon Howard visited USC this week, as he is looking for his next college; key to Andy Enfield's success at FGCU was a quality PG. Would Howard be a quality Pac-12 point guard? Hmmm

-- Bad blow for Golden State, with David Lee done for the season with a torn hip flexor. Warriors lost Game 1 by a hoop in Denver.

-- Graeme McDowell won his second US tournament (he has six European titles), beating Webb Simpson in a playoff on Hilton Head Island. Neither golfer made the cut at Augusta last week.

-- Drew Crawford is coming back from injury to play at Northwestern for a fifth season, which will help new coach Chris Collins an awful lot.

-- Dodgers put Chad Billingsley on the DL (elbow); of their top seven starting pitchers

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

        13) Pacers 107, Hawks 90-- Indiana outscored Hawks 30-7 on foul line, as George was 17-18 by himself at charity stripe. Every Pacer starter was +13 or better for the game, and Hawks even shot 50% from floor. George dished out 12 assists and recorded a triple-double.

        12) Spurs 91, Lakers 79-- San Antonio shot under 39% for third time in four games vs LA this season, but won easily. Dwight Howard had 15 rebounds, but none on offensive end. Laker bench had two hoops (2-8) in a combined 56 minutes. Spur bench was 13-31 in 79 minutes.

        11) Heat 110, Bucks 87-- Milwaukee was -13 in 15:00 Brandon Jennings was off court, -9 in 33:00 he played. It would be really surprising if the Heat loses a game in this series. Bucks are now 38-45 this season. Miami's only worry in this series is avoiding getting someone hurt.

        10) Thunder 120, Rockets 91-- No chance #1 seed Oklahoma City takes it easy on Rockets, not with former teammate Harden star of Houston team; in four meetings this season, OC has scored 120-124-119-120 points vs Rocket team that just doesn't match up well here. It would help to defend a little.

        9) Not sure what the Mets see in Ike Davis; he was pathetic for the first half of last year, but started hitting once they fell out of the race, so people were still high on him. This season, he has come up with 45 men on base, and knocked in three of them, thats three out of 45.

He's knocked in two of eight runners from 3rd base, and a combined 1 of 37 from 1st and 2nd base; this is a corner infielder we're talking about!!!!

        8) By way of contrast, John Buck has knocked in 15 of 46 runners (32.6%), David Wright 12 of 45 (26.7%) and Daniel Murphy 10 of 38 (26.3%).

        7) In case you were wondering, Cincinnati's Brandon Phillips has come up with the most men on base (73); he's knocked in 16 of them (21.9%).

        6) Mets had Ron Darling Bobblehead Day Sunday, on a day when their former pitcher/current TV analyst was out of town working a game on TBS. Shouldn't you have the day when Darling is actually there, seeing as he is there most of the time? Just seemed odd.

        5) I'm a big fan of the Brewers' alternate gold jerseys, which I think they only wear on Sundays at home. Very sharp.

        4) Ryan Howard's lack of mobility at first base hurts the Phillies, to the point of being a glaring weakness. He just doesn't move well at all.

        3) From 2005-08, Jose Reyes played in 161-153-160-159 games for Mets; since then, starting in '09, he's played in 36-133-126-160 games, and now is out until the All-Star break in Toronto. Part of being great is durability; Reyes' latest injury was his fault because he was indecisive on a slide and his ankle collapsed. His lack of durability is undermining his career.

        2) Barry Zito's starts this season:
April 5, vs St Louis-- 7 IP, three hits, no runs, W1-0.
April 10, vs Colorado-- 7 IP, seven hits, no runs, W10-0.
April 16, @ Milwaukee- 2.2 IP, eight hits, nine runs, L10-8.
April 21, vs San Diego-- 7 IP, five hits, no runs, W5-0.

I'm thinking he prefers pitching at home.

        1) NFL schedule makers know stuff: Jets-Buccaneers in Week 1 is no coincidence, as Bucs acquired Darelle Revis from Gang Green Sunday, for the 13th pick in this week's draft, and a conditional 2014 pick. Nothing like little added intrigue to the league's opening weekend.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday's streaking and slumping MLB starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are two streaking and two slumping MLB pitchers set to take the hill Monday.

                  Streaking

                  A.J. Griffin, Oakland Athletics (2-0, 2.25 ERA)

Griffin has pitched 20 innings in three starts this season and has allowed only five earned runs. The over is 2-1 in Griffin's games because of the potency of the A's offense.

Matt Moore, Tampa Bay Rays (3-0, 1.00 ERA)

With reigning-Cy Young winner David Price now at four mediocre starts in this campaign, the Rays are fortunate Moore has picked up the slack. Moore has the fifth-best ERA in the majors at 1.00, including two shutouts, while giving up only eight hits and striking out 20 batters. The under is 2-0-1 in his starts.

                  Slumping

Dan Haren, Washington Nationals (1-2, 8.10 ERA)

Haren has struggled since returning to the National League in the offseason. The former Angel hasn't pitched more than six innings, giving up at least seven hits, including a four-home run game in his opener against the Reds. The over is 3-0 in Haren's starts.

Joe Blanton, Los Angeles Angels (0-3, 8.59 ERA)

The Angels have the second-worst team ERA in all of baseball and Blanton is one of the biggest reasons why. In each of his three starts, Blanton has yielded at least four earned runs and seven hits for a 8.59 ERA and 0-3 record. The over is 3-0 in Blanton's starts.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

                              13) Creighton basketball star Doug McDermott has a decision this week; go to the NBA and make a few million bucks, or stay in college and play his senior year for the Bluejays. Not as simple as it sounds.

One thing complicates a seemingly easy decision; Greg McDermott (Doug’s dad) is the Bluejays’ coach and Creighton isn’t a top 25 team next preseason unless Doug comes back to play.

                              12) If you don’t think there is pressure to win at Creighton, consider this: Bluejays drew more fans per home game this season than 14 teams in the NBA. People don’t come out to watch losing teams.

Like I said, interesting decision for the kid.

                              11) Florida Gators didn’t hold a spring football game because they only had six healthy offensive linemen for spring practice. Going to be freshmen and JC kids backing up the starters on the line this fall.

                              10) Employees of NFL Network and ESPN won’t be tweeting draft picks this weekend, to protect the integrity of the broadcasts. I’ll probably choose NFLN over ESPN the first day, then go with ESPN when Mel Kiper is on more, in the later rounds; I’ve soured on Chris Berman’s act the last few years. He won’t be around for Day 3.

                              9) In 1976, kid named Gregg Popovich tried out for the Denver Nuggets, who were coached by Larry Brown; trying to guard David Thompson helped send Popovich on a path to coaching, where he has become one of the NBA’s all-time greats. Only other team he coached was a D-III college club.

                              8) People forget just how great a player David Thompson was, before his off-court troubles ruined his career; in lot of ways, he was the NBA’s version of Dwight Gooden, a prodigious talent whose career got derailed by life in the fast line. But boy, what a great, great college player.

                              7) Donald Trump tweeted Monday that he thinks the Boston bomber will eventually ask for a Presidential pardon; if that happens, the answer damn well better be no, and an emphatic no.

                              6) Big Dozen approved a nine-game conference football schedule, but that won’t start until 2016; until then, teams will fatten up on MAC and the lame I-AA teams with that extra game.

                              5) We need the Carl’s Jr hamburger chain to come east; apparently they’re now testing out a Pop Tarts ice cream sandwich; who wouldn’t be in favor of that? Come on Carl’s people, be greedy, open up some new places in the east, specifically upstate New York, say, surburban Albany???

                              4) Krispy Kreme has come up with Key Lime cheesecake donuts, which sounds like a little too much, even for me. I prefer Dunkin’ Donuts because they serve bigger donuts, and its all about quantity, not quality…..lol

                              3) Someone got to the official scorer in Seattle Monday and got a Victor Martinez E-6 changed to a single, which raises his batting average from .167 to .182, making his off day the best day he’s had this season.

                              2) Consensus on Twitter Monday afternoon was that no Big Dozen players will be taken in first round of the NFL Draft Thursday night. Zero. Not any Michigan guys or Ohio State or Nebraska. Wow.

                              1) Alabama/Auburn combined to draw 161,716 fans to their spring football games; its really an amazing thing. Vanderbilt drew an estimated 14,000 to theirs, and they’re in the same league as the two Alabama schools.

                              Two schools of thought here:
                              a) Its unfair that Vandy’s resources are so much less than the big boys or
                              b) With equal revenue sharing of TV money, Vandy’s administration is making a killing and they could care less if they win or lose, as long as those big fat revenue sharing checks keep rolling in.

                              • See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

                                Lookahead spot

The Miami Heat displayed why they’re the top team in the NBA and shut up Brandon Jennings in the process, knocking around the Milwaukee Bucks for a 110-87 win in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series Sunday. The Heat host Game 2 Tuesday night and the results are expected to be the same, if the monstrous Miami moneylines are any indication.

The series swings to Milwaukee Thursday and, if everything goes according to plan, Miami could be looking ahead to its second-round opponent before the Bucks are even in the bag. The Bucks were able to steal a game against the Heat at home back in late December, winning 104-85 and forced 22 turnovers in that upset. Miami coughed the ball up 19 times in Game 1 against a Milwaukee defense that forces 16 turnovers per game - most in the NBA.

                                Letdown spot

The Chicago Cubs are currently battling the National League Central-leading Cincinnati Reds in a three-game road series, which finishes up with a matinee Wednesday. Heading into the series, the Cubbies have lost four in a row to the Reds, dating back to last season, and have just one win in their last 10 meetings with Cincy. Looking back long term, Chicago is 16-36 SU in its last 52 games with Cincinnati.

Following that grinder with the Reds, the Cubs welcome the warm weather in South Beach for a four-game stop to play the lowly Miami Marlins. The road hasn’t been kind to Cubs bettors this month. The team is 2-7 SU away from Wrigley heading into the week. Chicago made a similar stop in Miami around this time last April, going 0-3 versus the Marlins coming off a tough series with St. Louis.

                                Schedule spot

Now that life is starting to get back to normal in the Boston area, the Bruins can refocus on the playoff push in the final week of the regular season. The schedule makers haven’t made it easy for Boston, sticking the Bruins with four games in the final six days to close the year, two of which come on the road.

Boston kicks off this stretch at Philadelphia Tuesday against a Flyers team that would love to spoil the B’s playoff positioning. The Bruins are home to Tampa Bay Thursday, back on the road at red-hot Washington Friday and finish up versus Ottawa at home Sunday. Boston has just one win in its last five outings and is holding off Montreal for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.
