    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Odds to win The Masters in two weeks........

3-1-- Eldrick Woods-- Last won Masters in 2005.

10-1-- Phil Mickelson-- 5th on money list, with $1,650,260.

12-1-- Rory McIlroy-- Equipment change hasn't helped.

18-1-- Brandt Snedeker-- Four top 10's in six tournaments this year.

25-1-- Charl Schwartzel-- Won tournament in 2011.

    30-1-- Bubba Watson-- Defending champ.

    *****

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here.......

    13) How much money is enough? That’s a big question being asked now in these coaching searches; when a mid-major pays a guy $1M+ a year and he is happy and winning there, why would he uproot his family, move halfway across the country to rebuild a program in a harder league with worse players than he has at the mid-major?

A school like Minnesota is a small fish in a very large pond; no successful mid-major coach with an ounce of sense would go there unless he’s unhappy where he is now. You lose 2-3 years in a row, you're fired.

    12) Then there’s UCLA, whose expectations are so stupidly high that no one they want will listen to them. They should hire Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to coach the team, be the face of the program, as long as he hires a veteran tactician to be his “bench coach” and a couple younger recruiters to bring in players. If Wake Forest had fired Jeff Bzdelik, he would’ve been ideal for the tactician role.

    11) If UCLA wants former assistant Mark Gottfried as head coach, it won’t be cheap; he has a $3.25M buyout at NC State, which may be one of the few places where the expectations are as dumb as they are in Westwood.

    10) Buster Posey/Justin Verlander signed lucrative extensions Friday. Giants have so much money tied up in Posey now you wonder if they’ll move him to first base to extend his career as a hitter. Catchers tend to fade out quicker than other position players.

    9) According to Forbes Magazine, which I quote a lot but have never actually read, the average major league franchise is now worth $774M. Teams in my 16-team keeper fantasy league are $60 a year.

    8) Maine Black Bears were 12-20 this year, are 23-36 last two years; their claim to fame is beating Florida Gulf Coast in December, but word comes out that Justin Edwards, their best player, wants to play “at a higher level” of Division I and will transfer out of Maine, similar to what Seth Curry did when he bolted Liberty for Duke a couple years ago. Edwards scored 16.7 ppg this year; curious to see where he winds up.

    7) Louisville 77, Oregon 69-- Russ Smith has gone from Russ-diculous to Russ-tacular; he had 31 here. Game with Duke Sunday should be fun.

    6) Michigan 87, Kansas 85, OT-- Jayhawks led 68-54 with 6:51 left; at no point watching this game did I think they would lose. Going to be a long summer for Bill Self. .

    5) Duke 71, Michigan State 61-- Good thing Blue Devils pilfered Seth Curry from Liberty; he had 29 in this one. Duke bench took one shot.

    4) Florida 62, Florida Gulf Coast 50-- Eagles led by 11 early on, but they turned ball over 20 times. Gators were too quick on perimeter, too big inside, just too good. Quite a run by FGCU, though, a fun team to watch.

    3) "I think the referees got the calls right. I don't think it was a hard foul. I think the one involving LeBron against [Carlos] Boozer, that was flagrant. I think the officials got it right. I think that it's almost embarrassing that LeBron would complain about officiating." Celtics GM Danny Ainge, for whatever reason discussing the Miami-Chicago game this week

    2) "Danny Ainge needs to shut the f--- up and manage his own team. He was the biggest whiner going when he was playing and I know that because I coached against him." Pat Riley, responding in a statement to Ainge's criticism of Lebron James. Riley doesn't like the Celtics much.

    1) For what its worth, the Celtics play in Miami April 12.

MLB betting: Top 5 beefed-up lineups

Last week we took a look at five teams that improved their pitching staffs and with Opening Day on the horizon it’s time to give the teams that beefed up on offense some love.

Here are five teams that bolstered their offensive prowess in the offseason:

Atlanta Braves (14/1 to win World Series)

      2012 over/under record: 67-88-7

Key additions: Justin Upton, B.J. Upton

The Braves have been a classic under play for decades because of their stellar pitching, but this year Atlanta could make some noise with its bats. The Braves added a pair of Uptons to their outfield to bolster an offense that averaged only 4.32 runs per game last campaign. Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward are no longer the new kids on the block and could be poised for breakout offensive seasons.

Cleveland Indians (70/1 to win World Series)

      2012 over/under record: 78-77-1

Key additions: Nick Swisher, Michael Bourn, Drew Stubbs

Speed will be the name of the game in Cleveland this year. Michael Bourn and Drew Stubbs combined to steal 72 bags last season and Nick Swisher should provide some pop in the middle of the lineup for a team that blasted only 136 home runs (25th) a year ago.

Toronto Blue Jays (12/1 to win World Series)

      2012 over/under record: 77-77-8

Key additions: Jose Reyes, Melky Cabrera

The Jays now have legitimate leadoff hitter after acquiring Jose Reyes and if the gamble on Melky Cabrera pays off, Toronto could be lighting up scoreboards this season.

Philadelphia Phillies (25/1 to win World Series)

      2012 over/under record: 83-73-6

Key additions: Ben Revere, Michael Young

Injuries have hampered the Phillies’ ability to score runs in recent years, but when healthy, they can pile on runs in a hurry. Speedster Ben Revere was picked up to replace the departed Shane Victorino and Michael Young’s experienced bat in the middle of the lineup should protect up-and-comer Domonic Brown.

Los Angeles Angels (7/1 to win World Series)

      2012 over/under record: 75-78-9

      Key addition: Josh Hamilton

There are only a handful of players in the bigs that can dramatically change the offensive dynamic of a team and one of those players is Josh Hamilton. The 2010 AL batting champion will get to flex his muscles in the middle of the order alongside Albert Pujols, creating a nightmarish one-two punch for opposing hurlers to deal with.

Syracuse vs. Marquette: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Syracuse Orange (-3.5, 128)

The conference that is disintegrating due to the realignment chaos is assured of having a team in the Final Four. Big East mates Syracuse and Marquette square off Saturday in Washington D.C. in the East Regional final, marking the first time since 2009 that teams from the same conference will compete for a Final Four berth. The fourth-seeded Orange dominated top-seeded Indiana on Thursday while third-seeded Marquette thrashed second-seeded Miami.

The Golden Eagles defeated Syracuse 74-71 on Feb. 25 in the lone regular-season meeting. Marquette squeezed past Davidson and Butler in its first two NCAA Tournament games, which made the rout of the Hurricanes particularly impressive. “They dominated a team that won the regular-season ACC and the ACC tournament,” Orange coach Jim Boeheim said. “Tremendous team and Marquette dominated the game.” Syracuse frustrated Indiana 61-50 after posting earlier tournament victories over Montana and California. Golden Eagles junior guard Vander Blue knows his team will be the underdog. “We’re used to people not giving us credit, saying we were no good,” Blue said. “If you were to look at our roster, no one would expect us to be an Elite Eight team.” The last time conference foes battled for a Final Four spot also featured two Big East squads – Villanova defeating Pittsburgh.

        TV:
        4:30 p.m. ET, CBS.

        ABOUT MARQUETTE (26-8):
The Golden Eagles are led by Blue, but feature a wealth of contributors who are capable of stepping up at any time. Junior forward Jamil Wilson had 16 points and eight rebounds against Miami, while Blue and junior reserve forward Davante Gardner contributed 14 points apiece. In fact, Gardner’s 11.4 average is second on the squad behind Blue’s 14.8. Wilson averages 9.9 points, senior guard Junior Cadougan averages 8.6 and senior wing Trent Lockett contributes 7.2 points and a team-best 5.1 rebounds. A blue-collar mentality sometimes leads to Marquette being overshadowed by more talented teams. “We want to keep being the hunters,” Blue said. “We don’t want to be the hunted.”

        ABOUT SYRACUSE (29-9):
Sophomore point guard Michael Carter-Williams had a spectacular game against Indiana with a career-best 24 points to go with six rebounds and four steals. “This was the best he’s played all year,” Boeheim said. “He was tremendous. He was the difference in the game on offense, clearly.” Williams ranks fourth on the Orange at 12.1 points per game while averaging a team-best 7.5 assists. He has 104 steals, one of three players nationally with 100 or more. Junior forward C.J. Fair averages a team-high 14.4 points and also grabs a team-leading seven rebounds per game, while senior guard Brandon Triche (13.8) and senior forward James Southerland (13.4) also score in double digits.

        TRENDS:

        * Orange are 0-5 ATS in their last five Saturday games.
        * Over is 4-0 in Golden Eagles’ last four games following a win.
        * Underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
        * Orange are 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings.

        TIP-INS

        1. Gardner scored 26 points in Marquette’s February win over the Orange. Fair scored 20 to lead Syracuse.

        2. Syracuse is attempting to reach the Final Four for the first time since the Carmelo Anthony-led team won the 2003 national title.

        3. Marquette is also vying to return to the Final Four for the first time since 2003, when Dwyane Wade was the team’s star player.

Wichita State vs. Ohio State: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wichita State Shockers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes (-4, 130)

Ohio State has become accustomed to coming up with critical shots late in the NCAA Tournament in its quest for a second consecutive Final Four. Wichita State has simply played big as it pursues a regional final victory for the second time in school history. The teams meet for the first time since 1963 on Saturday in Los Angeles for the right to represent the West Region in the Final Four.

For the second straight game, Ohio State drained a 3-pointer in the waning seconds to break a tie and advance. After Ohio State used a 3-pointer from Aaron Craft to break Iowa State’s heart on Sunday, LaQuinton Ross hit one to sink Arizona on Thursday. The Buckeyes will put their 11-game winning streak on the line against the Shockers, who followed their upset win over top-seeded Gonzaga last Saturday with an impressive victory over La Salle on Thursday.

        TV:
        7:05 p.m. ET, CBS.

        ABOUT WICHITA STATE (29-8):
Carl Hall dominated the undersized Explorers inside, hitting his first five shots and scoring 14 of his 16 points inside the paint. The Shockers recorded 40 points in the paint against La Salle and took 43 shots inside, the most such attempts for a team in this tournament. Wichita State’s tournament opponents – Pittsburgh, Gonzaga and La Salle – each entered their games with the Shockers shooting at least 45 percent, but the teams combined to shoot 35.5 percent against the Missouri Valley Conference’s top-ranked field-goal percentage defense.

        ABOUT OHIO STATE (29-7):
Unlike the play that left Craft open for a 3-pointer against the Cyclones, the pivotal moment in the win Thursday came when Arizona overcommitted to the Buckeyes’ point guard. "It was similar to the play we ran last game," Ross said. "We like to get the (big men) on a pick-and-roll. It so happened they messed up the switch there and I was able to knock down the shot." Perhaps one of the biggest turnarounds the team has made lately is beyond the arc. In three NCAA Tournament games, Ohio State is a combined 23-for-46 (50 percent) from the 3-point line after shooting 35.9 percent over its first 33 contests.

        TRENDS:

        * Shockers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
        * Under is 6-0 in Buckeyes’ last six Saturday games.
        * Over is 4-1 in Shockers’ last five non-conference games.
        * Shockers are 4-0 ATS in their last four non-conference games.

        TIP-INS

NCAA's biggest betting mismatches: Saturday's Elite Eight
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Syracuse Orange vs. Marquette Golden Eagles (+3, 127)

Orange’s flat final 20 vs. Golden Eagles’ halftime adjustments

Marquette won the lone meeting with the Orange this season, putting together a strong second-half push to win 74-71 as a 1.5-point home underdog in February. Second-half adjustments are the Golden Eagles’ calling card in March, having won in comeback fashion in their first two NCAA games, versus Davidson and Butler, before steamrolling Miami Thursday.

Syracuse has been a poor second-half squad all season. The Orange ranked fifth in the country in first half margin (+8.7) but ran out of steam in the final 20 minutes, boasting an average margin of just +3.4. The Orange were outscored in the second half versus Indiana and Cal – which resulted in a backdoor cover for the Golden Bears - and who can forget their embarrassing 16-point collapse to Louisville in the conference title game. It’s enough to turn Orange bettors green.

Wichita State Shockers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes (-6.5, 132)

Shockers’ deep bench vs. Buckeyes’ short reserves

Just like a swarm of bugs, the Shockers have strength in numbers. Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall rolls out wave after wave of players, frustrating foes with their pressure defense and physical play. Just like a boxer working the body, WSU’s “Play Angry” philosophy wears on opponents and leaves them gasping for air come crunch time. The Shockers have gone at least 10 deep into their bench in each of their tournament games.

Ohio State head coach Thad Matta is not as trusting with his reserves. The Buckeyes have water wings on when it comes to their bench and try not to go too deep. They usually run an eight-man rotation and only two of those backups - Shannon Scott and LaQuinton Ross – get serious minutes. The grind of the tournament will never be more prominent for OSU than against the relentless Shockers Saturday. The Buckeyes have to avoid early foul trouble, especially PG Aaron Craft who picked up four personals versus Arizona.

Fullcourt press: Saturday's NBA betting notes
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Dallas Mavericks (-5.5, 190.5)

Dallas is 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the No. 8 spot in the West and had a three-game winning streak snapped on Thursday. Bulls F Joakim Noah (plantar fasciitis) and G Marco Belinelli (abdominal strain) will both be game-time decisions. Chicago is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.

Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks (-11.5, 197.5)

The Magic snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 97-92 home victory over the Washington Wizards on Friday. But point guard Jameer Nelson suffered a sprained ankle in the first quarter and did not return. His status is unclear for Saturday, putting more pressure on a lineup featuring three rookies and a second-year player. The Hawks have won all three meetings this season, limiting Orlando to an average of 76 points. The over is 7-0 in the Magic’s last seven Saturday games.

                Charlotte Bobcats at Philadelphia 76ers (-10.5, 195)

The Sixers have won two of three away from home after halting a 15-game road drought. Although Charlotte has won three of its last six, two of the losses were hard to watch. The Bobcats were steamrolled by 32 points in Miami last Sunday and fell behind by 30 points in the second quarter of Friday's 111-102 home defeat to the New York Knicks. Philadelphia has won the past five meetings and held Charlotte under 90 points in four of them. The Sixers are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five home games.

Los Angeles Clippers at Houston Rockets (-1.5, 206)

The Los Angeles Clippers' bid for a franchise-record 50th victory was delayed for at least a night, meaning the Clippers will try for the historic win when they travel to Houston on Saturday in search of their sixth consecutive win against the Rockets. Houston has been held under 100 points in three consecutive games for the first time since a four-game stretch from Nov. 3-10. The under is 7-0 in the Rockets’ last seven home games.

Memphis Grizzlies at Minnesota Timberwolves (+4.5, 186.5)

The Grizzlies have dropped five straight road games and will be playing the second night of a back-to-back after securing a home win over the Houston Rockets on Friday. The Timberwolves beat the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday and have taken three of five. Memphis has won 10 straight against Minnesota but will be making its first trip of the season to the Target Center. The home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Milwaukee Bucks (+5.5, 207.5)

This is the first of two meetings this season. Oklahoma City won the only meeting last season, and the teams have split their past 10 contests. The Bucks have won seven of their last nine against Western Conference teams, but are only 3-12 ATS in their last 15 home games.

Brooklyn Nets at Utah Jazz (-3.5, 189.5)

The Utah Jazz have caught the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final playoff position in the Western Conference and are set up nicely in their bid to land the postseason spot. Saturday’s game against the visiting Brooklyn Nets starts a stretch in which Utah plays six of seven at home and the Jazz are 26-9 in their friendly environment. Brooklyn G Joe Johnson (quadriceps) will likely miss his fourth straight game. The over is 8-1 in the Nets’ last nine overall.

Indiana Pacers at Phoenix Suns (+7.5, 186.5)

The Suns have lost five straight games and nine of their last 10. Indiana has won three straight, including an impressive 103-78 victory at Dallas on Thursday. The win came hours after the Pacers learned that former All-Star Danny Granger will have season-ending left knee surgery. The underdog is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.

Los Angeles Lakers at Sacramento Kings (+4.5, 215.5)

Kobe Bryant is expected to be in the lineup when the Los Angeles Lakers visit the Kings. Bryant is hobbling with a foot injury and is considered probable. Point guard Steve Nash is suffering from a hip injury and is questionable. Sacramento has scored 100 or more points in 20 of its last 23 contests and the over is 7-0 in Los Angeles’ last seven games following a loss.

Portland Trail Blazers at Golden State Warriors (-7.5, 202.5)

Portland will be playing the second of a back-to-back set after falling to Utah at home on Friday. The Trail Blazers are still alive in the playoff race in the West but are running out of time to make up ground with each passing game. Portland is also dealing with an ankle injury to All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge that kept the forward out of the lineup on Friday and will force him to sit again on Saturday. The under is 8-1 in the Warriors’ last nine vs. Western Conference foes.

Hockey Night In Canada: Maple Leafs at Senators
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Ottawa Senators (-125, 5)

The Ottawa Senators are 7-1-2 since losing 5-4 to the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 6. On Saturday, the Senators will try for their fourth win in a row when they host the Maple Leafs in the fourth of five games between the Northeast Division rivals. Toronto, which has points in its last seven games (4-0-3), trails Ottawa by two points in the Eastern Conference playoff race, although the Senators have a game in hand. The Maple Leafs lead the season series 2-1-0 but lost 3-2 at Ottawa on Feb. 23. Senators goaltender Ben Bishop made 27 saves in that victory and earned his second career shutout with 24 saves against the Rangers on Thursday.

James Reimer has started five of the last six games and was in net for Toronto’s last home win over Ottawa on March 6. Ben Scrivens started the first two games against the Senators, earning his first career shutout before stopping 32 in the 3-2 road loss. Production on the power play has played a large role in the Maple Leafs’ point streak, with man-advantage goals in each of the last three games and four of the last five (5-for-16). Toronto’s penalty killing is a perfect 6-for-6 against the Senators, who are 2-for-5 on the power play during their winning streak.

                          TV:
                          7 p.m. ET, CBC

                          ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (19-12-4):
Captain Dion Phaneuf scored his second goal in as many games and added two assists in Toronto’s 6-3 win over Carolina on Thursday. Phaneuf has three assists in the previous three games against Ottawa. Joffrey Lupul scored the game-winner - his seventh goal in five games since returning from a broken arm. Phil Kessel has 18 points this month to take the team scoring lead from Nazem Kadri, who has been held off the scoresheet in the last two games. Clarke MacArthur has missed two games with an upper-body injury and is day-to-day, joining Leo Komarov, who has missed four.

                          ABOUT THE SENATORS (19-9-6):
Colin Greening, who had three points (one goal, two assists) in Ottawa’s victory over the Maple Leafs and added another goal on March 6, has two goals and an assist in his last three games following a seven-game point drought. Goaltender Craig Anderson, who hasn’t played since Feb. 21 due to an ankle injury, is close to returning and will travel with the team on next week’s road trip. With Jason Spezza (back surgery), Erik Karlsson (lacerated achilles) and Milan Michalek (knee surgery) all out, getting Anderson back would go a long way to securing the Senators’ playoff position. There is also talk of Karlsson, the defending Norris Trophy winner, returning before the end of the regular season.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Maple Leafs are 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                          * Under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings in Ottawa.
                          * Senators are 9-2 in their last 11 home games.
                          * Maple Leafs are 0-4 in their last four road games.

                          OVERTIME

                          1. Lupul has 10 points in 17 career games against the Senators.

                          2. Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson has 71 points in 78 career games against Toronto.

                          3. The Maple Leafs and Senators will meet once more at Ottawa on April 20.
