    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds to win the World Series this year:

Detroit Tigers 6-1-- Why couldn't they sit Verlander for playoffs? LOL

Los Angeles Angels 7-1-- Their games with Texas should be interesting.

Washington Nationals 7-1-- Davey Johnson enhances Hall of Fame resume.

Los Angeles Dodgers 8-1-- Most expensive roster......ever.

Cincinnati Reds 9-1-- Heavy favorites in NL Central.

San Francisco Giants 12-1-- Not much respect for defending champs.

Toronto Blue Jays 12-1-- Sent Randy Romero to A ball today; wow.

    *****

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) Kansas City Royals are 23-6 in the Cactus League, as they try to have their first winning season since 2003; does winning in March help you win during the summer? Rays’ manager Joe Maddon has said in the past that thinks it does.

    12) Miami Heat has won 28 games in a row; when their playoffs start, who the hell is winning a best-of-7 series against them? No one, if Lebron James is healthy. That’s why the NCAA tournament is way more interesting than the NBA playoffs.

Could Florida Gulf Coast beat Georgetown/San Diego State best-of-7? When upsets are possible, the event is more interesting.

In case you were wondering, Miami Heat won 23 of last 29 games that Dwyane Wade sat out.

    11) TV ratings for first weekend of NCAA’s were highest they’ve been in 23 years; being able to switch to any game you want to on free TV was an excellent move.

    10) Bobby Hurley leaves his brother in Rhode Island, is new hoop coach at Buffalo. That should be interesting.

    9) Why would Shaka Smart take the Minnesota job? He could get a way better job than that. Being a small fish in a deep pond is no fun.

    8) Ravens signed Elvis Dumervil with money they saved by letting Anquan Boldin walk, so that all makes sense now, although they lucked into the Dumervil thing, since his former agent screwed up, which made Elvis a free agent.

Some notes on the regionals semifinal round of the NCAAs........
    7) Since ’01, #1 seeds are 8-2 vs spread if facing someone other than a 4-5 seed, 15-18 if facing a 4-5 seed.

    6) Since ’01, underdogs are 9-7 vs spread when a 2-seed plays a 3-seed.

    5) Since ’02, underdogs are 7-4 vs spread when a #3 seed plays anyone but a #2 seed in this round.

    4) Since 1987, underdogs are 15-9-1 vs spread when a #2 seed plays a #6 seed in this round.

    3) Since ’02, #10 or lower seeds are 6-11 vs spread in this round, despite being 3-0 LY.

    2) How important is having an NBA franchise to a city? Former Suns’ guard Kevin Johnson is the mayor of Sacramento, and he has worked his butt off to keep the Kings from moving to Seattle. Looks like he might succeed, too; I’m just wondering, is it worth it? I’m not saying it isn’t, I’m just asking.

    1) Read something last night that said the 2013 NFL schedule is likely to be released April 16; that’s always fun, to break schedule down, because as Bud Grant used to say, “Its not who you play, its when you play them.”

National League West preview: Will Dodgers' deep pockets pay off?

The defending World Series champion Giants aren’t the favorites to win the National League West crown. The Dodgers and their bulging pocketbook take top billing but there is plenty of value below them in the NL West. Three out of the division's five clubs turned a profit in 2012.

      Arizona Diamondbacks (2012: 81-81 - -11.34 units, 77-77-8 over/under)

      Division odds: +750
      Season win total: 82.5

Why bet the Diamondbacks: The rotation is back and even better with the addition of Brandon McCarthy. Ian Kennedy, Trevor Cahill, and Wade Miley were solid last year with a combined 94 starts and all three return for the D-backs. They added Martin Prado to a lineup that was in need of some re-tooling. Aaron Hill will enjoy the bigger gaps in a hitter's park after putting up 76 extra-base hits last year. The bullpen is a strength with J.J. Putz pitching well as the closer.

Why not bet the Diamondbacks: The lineup may be weaker with the departure of Justin Upton. The last spot of the pitching rotation is a question mark with Patrick Corbin, Tyler Skaggs and possibly Josh Collmenter fighting for it. Heath Bell struggled with Miami last season and Arizona's bench is not deep, so injuries could become an issue.

Season win total pick: Under 82.5

      Colorado Rockies (2012: 64-98 - -19.36 units, 84-73-5 over/under)

      Division odds: +2,200
      Season win total: 71.5

Why bet the Rockies: The lineup plays well in the thin air and altitude at home, where they are capable of scoring runs. Carlos Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton are back, and if healthy will still be a potent part of this lineup. The team is scrapping the pitch limit for the starters which should help them focus and also take pressure off the bullpen. When healthy, Jhoulys Chacin and Jorge De La Rosa are solid pitchers.

Why not bet the Rockies: Health is a major issue for this team. Helton is a year older and Tulo is always a threat for a trip to the disabled list. Nicasio, De La Rosa, and Chacin were all injured at some point last season. Jeff Francis and Drew Pomeranz round out the rotation and neither were good last year. The bullpen is filled with relative no-names and could struggle this season in new roles.

Season win total pick: Under 71.5

      Los Angeles Dodgers (2012: 86-76 – +2.74 units, 71-82-9 over/under)

      Division odds: -120
      Season win total: 91.5

Why bet the Dodgers: The lineup is fierce with Hanley Ramirez, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, and Adrian Gonzalez. When Carl Crawford is ready, he will add another dimension of speed and contact to the group. The rotation features two of the best pitchers in baseball with Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke at the top. Watch out for Hyun-Jin Ryu who led the Korean Baseball Organization in strikeouts five times. A lot of power arms in the bullpen.

Why not bet the Dodgers: The lineup struggled at times last season. Chad Billingsley and Josh Beckett round out the pitching rotation and both are very inconsistent. Crawford's health will be an issue, along with Kemp and Billingsley. There has been a lot of money spent on this roster which sometimes leads to underperformance.

Season win total pick: Under 91.5

      San Diego Padres (2012: 76-86 - +4.48 units, 85-73-4 over/under)

      Division odds: +1,800
      Season win total: 74.5

Why bet the Padres: The fences are going to be brought in closer at Petco Park, which should benefit this offensive lineup and help the power numbers for Chase Headley, Carlos Quentin and Yonder Alonso. Clayton Richard is a fantastic pitcher at home. The bullpen is still strong with Huston Street and Luke Gregorson.

Why not bet the Padres: The back end of the rotation is weak with Jason Marquis, Eric Stults, and potentially Anthony Bass. The Padres' offensive lineup is still a major question mark, especially with Yasmani Grandal out for the first 50 games of the season. The bench is weak and lacks power.

Season win total pick: Over 74.5

      San Francisco Giants (2012: 94-68 - +19.99 units, 86-70-6 over/under)

      Division odds: +200
      Season win total: 88

Why bet the Giants: Pitching is stellar as usual with Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, and Ryan Vogelsong anchoring the starting rotation. Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez are fantastic in the bullpen as well. The offensive lineup will have a full season of Hunter Pence and Buster Posey, which should lead to better results.

Why not bet the Giants: How will Tim Lincecum be this season? He was weak as a starter, but was effective out of the bullpen. The lineup struggled scoring runs at times last year. The team also has the pressure of being the defending World Series champions. How will they handle the expectations and will there be a letdown?

Season win total pick: Over 88

Wednesday's NIT Quarterfinals: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Iowa Hawkeyes at Virginia Cavaliers (-4, 123)

Virginia found itself on the doorstep of playing in Madison Square Garden at the start of the season, but a surprising setback dashed its hopes. The Cavaliers haven’t lost at home since and can guarantee themselves a visit to the “world’s most famous arena” as well as a spot in the National Invitation Tournament’s Final Four in New York next week with another such victory on Wednesday over Iowa. Virginia missed its first chance at playing at MSG on Nov. 13 when it suffered its lone home loss on Nov. 13 to Delaware in the NIT Season Tip-Off tournament.

Virginia has since rolled off 19 consecutive victories at John Paul Jones Arena, including double-digit wins over Norfolk State and St. John’s in its first two games in this event. The Hawkeyes, who have won nine of their last 12 contests, represent the final hurdle for the Cavaliers. Iowa has been every bit as impressive in the first two rounds of the NIT, registering a pair of double-digit home wins over Indiana State and Stony Brook.

        TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT IOWA (23-12, 22-9-0 ATS): One of the most important factors in the Hawkeyes’ finish has been the strong play of leading scorer Roy Devyn Marble (14.8 points). Marble missed one contest and averaged a mere 7.3 points in the seven subsequent games following an ankle sprain during practice on Jan. 7, but is averaging 18.3 since. In the team’s NIT victories, Marble is averaging 26 points, 5.5 assists and one turnover. "He is making plays and not turning the ball over," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery told the team’s website. "He's very unselfish and scoring a lot more. It seems to be having a comforting effect as everyone around him feels good (when he has) the ball.”

ABOUT VIRGINIA (23-11, 18-12-1 ATS): First-year players combined to score 46 of the Cavaliers’ 68 points in Sunday’s victory over St. John’s. Both Justin Anderson (18) and fellow freshman Taylor Barnette (13) secured career-high point totals – necessary performances considering leading scorer Joe Harris was held to seven points, 9.4 below his season average. “I thought the first-years really gave us a lift and played very good basketball. That was pivotal in this game,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett told the team's website. Junior Akil Mitchell grabbed nine rebounds against the Red Storm to give him 305 for the season, marking only the eighth time a Cavalier has reached the 300-rebound mark.

        TRENDS:

        * Hawkeyes are 0-4 ATS in their last four vs. Atlantic Coast.
        * Cavaliers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight vs. Big Ten.
        * Under is 7-3 in Hawkeyes' last 10 overall.

        TIP-INS:

        1. Iowa ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring (70.4 points) while Virginia possesses the fourth-best scoring defense in the country (55).

        2. The Cavaliers’ 20 home wins is a single-season school record.

        3. The winner of this contest will meet either Alabama or Maryland in the NIT semifinals.

BYU Cougars at Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (-5.5, 151)

Brigham Young has bounced back nicely from a shocking 72-69 loss to San Diego in the quarterfinals of the West Coast Conference tournament with impressive back-to-back home wins over Washington (90-79) and Mercer (90-71). The Cougars, playing in their 11th National Invitation Tournament, improved to 14-8 all-time in that tourney with Monday night's win over the Bears. BYU won the NIT in both 1951 and 1966 but is making its first appearance in the event since 2006.

Southern Mississippi, the top seed in its portion of the bracket, is playing in its ninth NIT and won the event in 1987. The Golden Eagles, who have won five of their last six games, defeated Charleston Southern (78-71) and Louisiana Tech (63-52) in the first two rounds in Hattiesburg, Miss., increasing their school-record home win streak in non-conference games to 30. Southern Miss is 4-1 all-time in NIT home games and is 53-6 at Reed Green Coliseum since 2009. The winner will face Baylor or Providence in the semifinals in New York City on April 2.

        TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT BRIGHAM YOUNG (23-11, 15-17-1 ATS): The Cougars have been looking to redeem themselves following their early exit in the WCC tourney and seemed to have found their shooting touch in the process, scoring 90 points in back-to-back games. "The disappointment of the conference tournament was real to our players," BYU coach Dave Rose told the Deseret News. "They really feel excited about this opportunity to continue to play, and not finish with the note we had there. It's good to see. They're playing with a lot of togetherness." Guard Tyler Haws, who scored a school NIT record 37 points in the opening win over Washington, leads the team in scoring (21.5) and has connected on 38.5 percent of his 3-point tries while 6-9 senior Brandon Davies, who had 26 points and 10 rebounds against Mercer, is averaging 18 points and 7.9 rebounds. Sophomore guard Matt Carlino, who began his career at UCLA, has been a big offensive key in the first two NIT games averaging 19 points, nine assists and 6.5 rebounds.

ABOUT SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI (27-9, 16-16-1 ATS): The Golden Eagles, unlike BYU, won't blow teams away with their offensive stats but make up for it on the defensive end. Southern Miss averages 9.8 steals per game - which ranks fourth in the nation - and, despite not having a starter taller than 6-7, led Conference USA in rebounding margin (plus-5.8). The Golden Eagles, who outrebounded 26 opponents this season, finished with a 44-22 edge in points in the paint in Monday night's win over Louisiana Tech and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds. "They were tremendous defensively," Louisiana Tech coach Michael White said. "Their zone was terrific. They did a good job of limiting our penetration." Senior forward Dwayne Davis (16.3) and junior guard Jerrold Brooks (10.8) are the only players to score in double figures for well-balanced Southern Miss, which has six players averaging 8.4 points or more.

        TRENDS:

        * Cougars are 4-12 ATS in their last 16 road games.
        * Golden Eagles are 4-11-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall.
        * Over is 25-9-1 in Golden Eagles last 35 overall.

        TIP-INS:

        1. Haws, who has scored 20 or more points in 23 games this season, now has 1,127 career points and is one of two sophomores in school history to reach 1,000 points in a career. The other was Danny Ainge.

        2. Carlino has connected on 9-of-18 3-point attempts in the NIT, many from well beyond the arc.

        3. Southern Miss PG Neil Watson broke the school single-season record with 63 steals this season, topping the old mark of 59 set by Casey Fisher in 1985-86.

Providence Friars at Baylor Bears (-9, 147)

Two of the top backcourt players still remaining in the NIT will try to push their teams through to the semifinals when second-seeded Baylor hosts No. 4 Providence on Wednesday. Baylor senior point guard Pierre Jackson averages 19.7 points and 6.7 assists. He put up 26 points and a career-high 16 assists in Friday’s 89-86 win against visiting Arizona State. Providence junior Bryce Cotton does less ball-handling than Jackson but just as much scoring, averaging 19.6 points. Cotton is averaging 22.5 points through the first two games of the tournament.

The player responsible for distributing the ball for Providence is senior point guard Vincent Council, who is averaging 10 points and seven assists. He’s also coming off a double-double in the second round, finishing with 12 points and 10 assists in a 77-68 win Monday against visiting Robert Morris. The four-year starter is shooting 33.6 percent, however, the lowest mark of his career.

        TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

ABOUT PROVIDENCE (19-14, 16-12-1 ATS): The Friars need to find a way to slow the high-scoring Bears and a good start would be winning the rebounding battle. Providence is ranked 38th in the nation in rebounding (37.8) and Baylor is 41st (37.7). Kadeem Batts and LaDontae Henton are the key figures in the middle for the Friars. Batts, a 6-10 junior forward, averages 14.7 points and 7.2 rebounds and Henton, a 6-6 sophomore forward, is averaging 13.4 points and 8.3 rebounds. Both players struggled with foul trouble in the win against Robert Morris, so keeping them on the floor will be vital for Providence.

ABOUT BAYLOR (20-14, 14-15-0 ATS): The Bears will counter down low with 7-1 freshman center Isaiah Austin and 6-9 junior forward Cory Jefferson. Like Batts and Henton, they lead their team in rebounding while also ranking second and third in scoring. Austin is averaging 13.2 points and 8.5 rebounds, while Jefferson comes in at 12.4 points and 8.2 rebounds. Austin has shown signs of having heavy legs, however. He has recorded double digits in rebounding once in the last 11 games after hitting that mark 12 times in his first 21. Jefferson has been an offensive roll lately, shooting 30-for-41 in the last four games.

        TRENDS:

        * Friars are 0-5 ATS in their last five vs. Big 12.
        * Over is 4-1 in Bears' last five non-conference games.

Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Miami Hurricanes (-5, 127)

After both survived scares last weekend, the road will end for either third-seeded Marquette or second-seeded Miami when they clash Thursday in the NCAA Tournament round of 16 in Washington, D.C. The Hurricanes continued their charmed season by holding off Illinois 63-59 on Sunday, reaching the Sweet 16 for only the second time. They have never advanced to the Elite Eight, but will have to do so without reserve C Reggie Johnson, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles are in the Sweet 16 for the third straight year, but they haven't advanced past this point since a Final Four run in 2003. Marquette was fortunate to get out of the round of 64, needing a late rally to fend off upset-minded Davidson 59-58, and the Golden Eagles denied another challenge in a 74-72 win over Butler on Saturday. The teams have split four all-time meetings and are squaring off for the first time since 1989.

                        TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, CBS

ABOUT MARQUETTE (25-8, 13-15-1 ATS): The Golden Eagles have been forced to rally in the second half of their first two games in the tournament, and junior guard Vander Blue has been the hero in both. Blue made the winning basket in the final seconds against Davidson and poured in 29 points against Butler. "We had two close games - we had a lot of those this year," Blue told reporters. "What we went through earlier this year prepared us." They ought to expect another tight contest in a matchup of defensive-minded teams. Blue and junior forward Jamil Wilson are the only Marquette players averaging double-digit scoring in the tournament.

ABOUT MIAMI (29-6, 21-10-1 ATS): The Hurricanes already have enjoyed what could be described as the best season in school history, winning the ACC regular-season and tournament titles, and they're not ready to send off six seniors yet. "Words can't describe it," forward Julian Gamble told reporters. "It is the first time (in the Sweet 16) for our school since the year 2000. To be going with this group of guys and continue with this dream season of sorts is really hard to put into words right now. We are really excited about the opportunity." Junior Rion Brown helped keep the season going with 21 points against Illinois, as the Hurricanes overcame a tough offensive night from senior Durand Scott. There's a chance Johnson could return if Miami reaches the Final Four.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Golden Eagles are 0-4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
                        * Hurricanes are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
                        * Under is 6-2 in Golden Eagles' last eight NCAA Tournament games.
                        * Over is 7-1 in Hurricanes' last eight NCAA Tournament games.

                        TIP-INS:

                        1. In five postseason games, Miami's Shane Larkin, Trey McKinney Jones, Scott and Brown all are averaging more than nine points, have hit 10 or more 3-pointers and are shooting better than 80 percent from the foul line.

                        2. Marquette is 4-6 this season when trailing at halftime, including two wins in the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles are 20-1 when leading at half and 1-1 when tied at the break.

                        3. The Verizon Center is the same site where Miami coach Jim Larranaga led George Mason to the Final Four in 2006. The Patriots beat Wichita State in the regional semifinals and Connecticut in the regional final in Washington, D.C.

Indiana Hoosiers vs. Syracuse Orange (+5.5, 135.5)

It has been more than a quarter-century since Indiana and Syracuse created one of the most memorable finishes in national championship history. The two basketball powers will meet again in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since – this time in the East Regional semifinals – on Thursday in Washington D.C. In 1987, the Hoosiers’ Keith Smart drained a 16-foot jumper from the left baseline in the final seconds against the Orange, giving Indiana its last NCAA title. The Hoosiers reached their second consecutive Sweet 16 for the first time in school history Sunday after rallying in the final minutes to defeat Temple 58-52.

Like Indiana, the Orange survived their own third-round scare, pulling out a 66-60 victory over California despite 15 missed free throws and a second-half field-goal drought that lasted 12:09. “It was not pretty. Honestly, I don't think I can describe it. It was about as ugly as I think it can get,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said following the game. The winner will face either Miami (Fla.) or Marquette in the Elite Eight on Saturday.

                        TV: 9:45 p.m. ET, CBS

ABOUT SYRACUSE (28-9, 18-15-0 ATS): Although he did not find out about it until after the game, Michael Carter-Williams’ home in Massachusetts was destroyed by fire Saturday, approximately at the same time the Orange were on the court with the Golden Bears in San Jose, Calif. Syracuse held Pac-12 Player of the Year Allen Crabbe to eight points and nine field-goal attempts – each mark two shy of his season low. The Bears also shot 4-for-21 beyond the arc. Defending the 3-point shot will be pivotal against the Hoosiers, who rank third in the country beyond the arc (40.8 percent) and feature three starters who knock down at least 43 percent of their 3-point attempts.

ABOUT INDIANA (29-6, 17-15-1 ATS): Victor Oladipo was named one of four finalists for the Naismith Award on Sunday and promptly closed out the Hoosiers’ victory over Temple by converting the tiebreaking free throw and a critical insurance 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining. The Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year will enjoy a homecoming of sorts this week in the nation’s capital, which is a short drive from Oladipo’s hometown of Upper Marlboro, Md. The 58 points against the Owls matched the Hoosiers’ second-lowest output of the season and marked the first time the third-highest scoring team in the country won a game in which they scored fewer than 66 points.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Orange are 2-5 ATS in their last seven NCAA Tournament games.
                        * Hoosiers are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four NCAA Tournament games.
                        * Over is 5-2 in Orange last seven neutral site games.
                        * Under is 5-2 in Hoosiers last seven overall.

                        TIP-INS:

                        1. Indiana is 11-1 all-time as a No. 1 seed, with the resulting .916 winning percentage the best such mark for a top seed in NCAA Tournament history.

Arizona Wildcats vs. Ohio State Buckeyes (-3.5, 134)

The longstanding friendship between Arizona coach Sean Miller and Ohio State coach Thad Matta will be set aside Thursday when the sixth-seeded Wildcats and No. 2 Buckeyes collide in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in Los Angeles. Miller and Matta became friends while serving on the Miami (Ohio) staff of Herb Sendek, currently the head coach at Arizona State. Their 12th-seeded RedHawks upset fifth-seeded Arizona in the 1995 NCAA Tournament.

Matta later hired Miller as his assistant at Xavier, where Miller took over after Matta left for Ohio State in 2004. They met on opposite ends of the floor once before, in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, with the top-seeded Buckeyes prevailing in overtime against No. 9 Xavier. This matchup looks to be similarly close, as Ohio State enters on a 10-game winning streak but could be vulnerable against Arizona’s size. Amir Williams, a 6-11 sophomore center, is the only player taller than 6-8 for the Buckeyes, but he's been limited to 16.5 minutes. The Wildcats, meanwhile, feature 7-foot freshman center Kaleb Tarczewski in the starting lineup with freshmen forwards Grant Jerrett (6-10) and Brandon Ashley (6-8) off the bench.

                        TV: 7:47 p.m. ET, TBS.

ABOUT ARIZONA (27-7, 16-16-0 ATS): Mark Lyons has already accomplished something no other player in NCAA history done, advancing to two straight Sweet 16s with different teams. Lyons, a 6-1 senior point guard, led Xavier to the quarterfinals last season before moving to Arizona in the offseason as a graduate transfer. He also helped the Musketeers to the Sweet 16 as a freshman before they lost in double overtime to Kansas State. Lyons has been playing his best basketball of the season lately. He’s averaging 25 points through the first two tournament games and has turned the ball over twice in each of the last four games.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (28-7, 20-12-1 ATS): Aaron Craft missed three free throws in the final 4:40 of Sunday’s game against 10th-seeded Iowa State but saved the Buckeyes by drawing a controversial charge with 1:41 remaining and then sinking a 3-pointer with one second left in the 78-75 victory. His defense on Lyons will be key in the West Regional semifinal. Some opposing coaches consider Craft the best defensive guard in the country. “You can’t simulate the defensive pressure of Craft in practice. He’s like having two guys on you,” Northern Kentucky coach Dave Bezold said after a loss to the Buckeyes back in December.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Wildcats are 5-0 ATS in their last five NCAA Tournament games.
                        * Buckeyes are 5-1 ATS in their last six neutral-site games.
                        * Under is 22-10-1 in Wildcats' last 33 overall.
                        * Under is 7-3 in Buckeyes' last 10 overall.

                        TIP-INS:

                        1. Ohio State forward Deshaun Thomas is averaging 23 points through the first two tournament games after leading all players in scoring at last season’s NCAA Tournament (19.2).

                        2. Ohio State and Arizona have met once previously, a 90-47 victory by the Buckeyes during the 1972-73 season.

                        3. With his next appearance, Arizona State senior forward Solomon Hill will tie the school record for most games played (139). Kyle Fogg set the current mark from 2008-12.

La Salle Explorers vs. Wichita State Shockers (-4, 135.5)

Either Wichita State or La Salle will be playing for a spot in the Final Four. The ninth-seeded Shockers and 13th-seeded Explorers are unlikely opponents in Thursday’s Sweet 16 contest in Los Angeles and the winner advances to Saturday’s West Regional final. Wichita State shocked top-seeded Gonzaga in the round of 32, while La Salle won three days in five games and advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 76-74 victory over Mississippi.

Explorers coach John Giannini refuses to buy into the notion that the Explorers are a “Cinderella” after their unlikely string of victories that began with wins over Boise State and Kansas State. “What people label us, we really try not to acknowledge it,” Giannini said. Wichita State routed Pittsburgh before posting the 76-70 victory over the Bulldogs, and the Shockers are very much aware that few people expected them to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2006. “You hear stuff and people come up to you saying, ‘What do you think about 70 percent of America has you losing the first game?’” junior forward Cleanthony Early said. “You have to avoid everyone’s opinion and go out there and play hard.”

                        TV: 10:17 p.m. ET, TBS

ABOUT WICHITA STATE (28-8, 17-14-2 ATS): Freshman guard Ron Baker joined Early in having a big game in the slaying of Gonzaga. Both players scored 16 points and made four 3-pointers but Baker’s effort stood out for two reasons – it fell two points shy of his career-best output and it was only his fifth game since returning from a foot injury that sidelined him for 21 games. “Those 21 games were a long 21 games, I’ll just say that,” said Baker, who is averaging 8.3 points in 15 games. Early averages a team-best 13.9 points, senior forward Carl Hall averages 12.6 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds and senior guard Malcolm Armstead contributes 10.6 points and a team-best four assists.

ABOUT LA SALLE (24-9, 15-12-2 ATS): Fatigue hasn’t yet been an issue for the Explorers despite the fact the team had to travel to Kansas City after winning their first outing in Dayton, Ohio. “At this point, you’re too young to be getting tired,” junior guard Tyreek Duren said. “You don’t really have time to get tired at this point. You wake up and win games.” Duren had 19 points against Ole Miss and ranks second on the squad in scoring at 14.5 points. Senior guard Ramon Galloway scored 24 points against the Rebels and averages a team-best 17.4 points. Junior guard Tyrone Garland averages 12.8 points and scored 17 against Ole Miss, including the game-winning basket on a driving shot with two seconds left.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Explorers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven non-conference games.
                        * Shockers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games.
                        * Over is 7-3 in Explorers' last 10 overall.
                        * Over is 5-1 in Shockers' last 6 overall.

                        TIP-INS:

                        1. Wichita State last advanced to a regional final in 1981. La Salle played in back-to-back title games in 1954-55 and won the 1954 championship game.

                        2. Five Explorers have 30 or more steals, led by Galloway (63) and Duren (56).

                        3. The Shockers made 14 3-pointers in the upset of Gonzaga, tying for second-most in school history
