    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Matchups for the Sweet 16 this Thursday/Friday......

    Thursday:
    -- Indiana (-5.5) vs Syracuse
    -- Miami (-5.5) vs Marquette
-- Wichita State (-4) vs LaSalle
-- Ohio State (-3.5) vs Arizona

    Friday:
    -- Louisville (-10) vs Oregon
-- Duke (NL) vs Michigan State
-- Florida (-12) vs Florida Gulf Coast
    -- Kansas (-2) vs Michigan

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up the best weekend of the year.......

    13) Florida Gulf Coast 81, San Diego State 71-- Eagles shot 55% from floor against solid defensive team, become first #15 seed ever to advance to Sweet 16. They're the talk of the tournament-- good for them.

    12) This Comer kid is terrific PG who should be playing in a much better league than the Atlantic Sun; if UNLV had him, they'd be a favorite to go to the Final Four. What tremendous court vision he has.

    11) Apparently the only reason Florida Gulf Coast went Division I in hoops is because a D-II league in Florida turned them down. Multiple people have confirmed that story, which is a little amazing.

    10) Ohio State 78, Iowa State 75-- Terrific game that swung on a marginal charging call against the Cyclones when they were up a point; Craft's heel appeared to be on that arc under the basket. Iowa State made 12-25 from arc, rallied back from down 13-- this was a very tough loss. .

    9) Had no idea that Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg needs a heart valve replacement in the near future, no one knows exactly when; he played in NBA for ten years, had to retire because of the heart issue. Our thoughts and prayers are with him-- very popular figure in Iowa.

    8) Indiana 58, Temple 52-- Three of Owls' five starters combined to go 0-21 from floor in this interesting game, as Khalif Wyatt carried Owls for 38:00, but got no help when he needed it most. Indiana-Syracuse this week means roughly 1,000 replays of Keith Smart's shot in 1987- terrific.

    7) Florida 78, Minnesota 64-- Gators were up 21 at half, staggered thru the second half; Minnesota-UCLA might wind up as the worst first round game of the last 20 years. Should've automatically picked against the winner here.

    6) Speaking of UCLA, they officially fired Ben Howland Sunday; question is, who are they going to get who is a better coach? If you fire a guy who got to three Final Fours in ten years, why is this considered a good job?

    5) LaSalle 76, Ole Miss 74-- Much like VCU two years ago, Explorers are proving that going to the First Four isn't so much of a hinderence. It helps to have really good senior guards.

Last 13-seed in the Sweet 16? Bradley Braves, in 2006.

    4) Kansas 70, North Carolina 58-- Tar Heels were up 30-21 at half, were +11 in turnovers for game, but shot only 30.1% and Jayhawks started running more in second half, going on 42-17 spurt to turn game in their favor.

    3) Miami 63, Illinois 59-- Survive. Advance. This was a 50-50 game; Durand Scott scored only six points, but Hurricanes made key plays late for the win. Illinois team always seemed like they should've been better.

    2) Duke 66, Creighton 50-- Awful game, with McDermott not scoring hoop in last 24:00; he was 12-12 from foul line, but Duke bludgeoned the Bluejays and move on to Indianapolis for the Sweet 16.

Krzyzewski, Pitino, Izzo in same region....with Dana Altman, who is a very good coach, but not exactly a media darling. Should be interesting.

    1) Its great to see an unknown team like Florida Gulf Coast believe in its abilities, play with tremendous enthuiasm and shock the world; they've got guys who can run, pass, shoot, defend- well-rounded, athletic players. Next up are the Florida Gators, who wouldn't even scrimmage the Eagles last fall.

Florida Gulf Coast is a 12-point dog; you going to give them 12 points?

MLB betting: Top 5 improved pitching staffs

Pitching is everything in baseball and that's why MLB general managers compete for premium arms every offseason via trade or free agency.

Here's a look at five teams that bolstered their respective pitching staffs ahead of the 2013 season:

Toronto Blue Jays (12/1 to win World Series)

      2012 season O/U: 77-77-8

Key additions: R.A. Dickey, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle,

Nobody made a bigger splash in the offseason than the Toronto Blue Jays. General manager Alex Anthopoulos wheeled and dealed for three top-notch starting pitchers, including reigning NL Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey. Toronto now has the best rotation in the bigs on paper. But can they get it done on the field and take advantage of a weak AL East?

Los Angeles Dodgers (8/1 to win World Series)

      2012 season O/U: 71-82-9

Key additions: Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Chris Capuano

The Dodgers went deep into their pockets and signed Zack Greinke and South Korea’s Hyun-Jin Ryu to six-year deals. Ryu was a seven-time All-Star and a five-time strikeout leader in Korea and joins a rotation that already boasts Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley and Josh Beckett. Greinke is the 2009 Cy Young Award winner and has big shoes to fill after signing the largest deal ($147 million) for a right-handed pitcher in history back in December. Chris Capuano has made the move to L.A. from New York (Mets) and is a steady lefty that can eat innings.

Kansas City Royals (50/1 to win World Series)

      2012 season O/U: 73-83-6

Key additions: James Shields, Wade Davis, Ervin Santana

The Royals added some much-needed pitching depth by acquiring James Shield and Wade Davis from the Rays. Kansas City still lacks a bonafide ace on its staff but it now has three proven starters after also adding Ervin Santana to the staff. The Royals parted ways with closer Joakim Soria in the offseason and will hand the ball over to Greg Holland in the crunch this year. Holland completed the 2012 season with 16 saves in 20 opportunities, a 2.96 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP, a 7-4 record and 91 strikeouts in 67 frames.

Los Angeles Angels (7/1 to win World Series)

      2012 season O/U: 75-78-9 O/U

Key additions: Tommy Hanson, Jason Vargas, Ryan Madson

The signing of Josh Hamilton has overshadowed the addition of three strong arms to the Angels’ pitching staff. The oft-injured Tommy Hanson was acquired from the Braves in November and should fit nicely into the middle of the rotation. L.A. also acquired lefty Jason Vargas from the Mariners just before Christmas. Vargas is one of the most underrated southpaws in the league. He quietly racked up 14 wins for Seattle in 2012. Ryan Madson’s surgically-repaired elbow is a cause for concern, but if he can bounce back and return to his previous form, the Angels will have a solid setup man behind Ernesto Frieri.

Boston Red Sox (30/1 to win World Series)

      2012 season O/U: 78-77-7

Key additions: Ryan Dempster, Joel Hanrahan

Boston’s pitching was god-awful in 2012 and that prompted some offseason additions that should help improve the staff this year. Veteran Ryan Dempster had one of the lowest ERAs in the NL up until the All-Star break last season and should help stabilize the rotation. Former Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan will assume the ninth-inning duties for the BoSox and push Andrew Bailey, who had an injury-plagued 2012 campaign, to the role of setup man.

Lakers at Warriors: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Golden State Warriors (-1.5, 207)

The Los Angeles Lakers did not fare so well when they attempted to work Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol back into the rotation on Friday. With two more days of practice under their belts, the Lakers will try to have a better showing when they visit the surging Golden State Warriors on Monday. The Warriors are one of the teams the Lakers are trying to track down in the Western Conference, though holding off the Utah Jazz is of greater importance.

Gasol returned from a 20-game absence on Friday but struggled to get back into a rhythm in 20 minutes while his teammates let a late lead slip away against the lowly Washington Wizards. Golden State got to face that same Wizards team on Saturday and won with ease as Stephen Curry stayed hot from beyond the arc and David Lee recorded his customary double-double. The Lakers are 2 1/2 games behind Golden State, with the Houston Rockets sitting in between the two. The No. 6 spot means avoiding San Antonio and Oklahoma City in the first round of the playoffs, though the rest of the teams at the top could be just as tough.

                  TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, TWSN (Los Angeles), CSBA (Golden State), NBATV

                  ABOUT THE LAKERS (36-34):
Los Angeles has dropped back-to-back games to two of the worst teams in the league and drew harsh criticism after Friday’s loss from coach Mike D’Antoni, who said, “I can’t explain it, but every time we get up by 16, it’s like ‘Well we’re good and we don’t have to play hard,’ and we start messing with the game…(when) you start messing with the basketball gods, they will get you. If we don’t change that, we obviously won’t make the playoffs.” Bryant, who had missed the previous two games with a sprained ankle and the flu, came up short on a tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer and echoed his coach. “It’s a disturbing loss, and we’re upset about it,” Bryant said. “Our defensive intensity slipped a great deal in the second half, and they took advantage of it.” The Lakers are kicking off a four-game road trip at Golden State.

                  ABOUT THE WARRIORS (40-31):
Golden State is clinging to a half-game lead over the Rockets for the No. 6 spot but appears to have dodged a bullet when Curry downplayed a right ankle sprain that forced him out in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 101-92 win over Washington. The star guard has dealt with ankle problems for the last few years but told reporters, “I’m fine,” and had the X-rays come back negative. Curry has been on fire lately, going 21-of-38 from 3-point range in the last four games and averaging 29.5 points in that span. The Warriors have won three of their last four with Curry handling the scoring load and Andrew Bogut, Harrison Barnes and even Lee forming a strong defensive front line. Lee, who has always been known more as an offensive force, has posted four straight double-doubles.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a loss.
                  * Warriors are 6-0 ATS in their last six Monday games.
                  * Over is 5-0 in Lakers’ last five games following a loss.
                  * Under is 7-0 in Warriors’ last seven vs. Western Conference foes.

                  BUZZER BEATERS

                  1. Lakers F Antawn Jamison suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist on Friday but is expected to play on Monday.

                  2. Los Angeles has taken six straight in the series, including a 118-115 overtime victory at Golden State on Dec. 22. Bryant scored 34 points in the win.

                  3. Curry has struggled to 19 points on 35.9 percent shooting in the two meetings with Los Angeles this season.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 17-23.

                    Hottest ATS

New York Knicks (4-1 SU, 5-0 ATS)

The Knicks have been ravaged with injuries but still reeled off five consecutive covers this past week. New York was a rare underdog three times during the streak and clinched a playoff berth in the process. The Knicks visit the Boston Celtics Tuesday before enjoying a three-game homestand at Madison Square Garden.

                    Coldest ATS

Toronto Raptors (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

The Raptors fell twice to the Knicks and also blew covers against the Heat and Bobcats last week. To make matters worse, Rudy Gay left Friday’s loss to New York with a back problem. He will have some time to heal before Atlanta rolls into the Air Canada Centre on Wednesday.

                    Best over play

                    Brooklyn Nets (2-2 SU, 4-0 over/under)

The Nets have played over the number in six straight games. Brooklyn has been putting up big numbers (104 ppg) during the over streak and has five games remaining on its current eight-game road trip. The Nets are in Phoenix Sunday and get a few days off before visiting Portland on Wednesday.

                    Best under play

                    Houston Rockets (2-1 SU, 0-3 over/under)

The Rockets have gone low in five straight games and seven of their last eight. Houston averages a league-best 106.5 points per game but its defense has stepped up and held opponents to an average of 92 points during the under run – more than 10 points lower than its season average (102.8). The Rockets host the Spurs Sunday and then the Pacers roll into town on Wednesday.

                    Scouting the schedule:

-The Philadelphia 76ers have dropped 15 consecutive road games heading into Sunday’s clash at Sacramento. The Sixers will be road warriors down the stretch, playing 10 of their final 14 games away from Wells Fargo Center. Philadelphia has a tendency to play under (8-20-3 O/U) on the road this season.

-The Golden State Warriors will battle for playoff positioning down the stretch, playing the majority of their games in front of their home crowd. The Warriors play seven of their next eight at Oracle Arena, where they have a 23-10 (18-15 ATS) straight-up record.

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 17-23

                            Hot team

                            Pittsburgh Penguins (3-0 SU)

Pittsburgh has won 11 consecutive games, allowing only eight goals over its last seven victories. The Penguins kick off a five-game homestand when the Flyers visit The Igloo Sunday night. Montreal, Winnipeg and the New York Islanders will also visit this week.

                            Cold team

                            Phoenix Coyotes (0-3 SU)

The Coyotes have dropped five straight games and are in the midst of a serious power outage. Phoenix has amassed only three goals during the losing skid and is rapidly falling out of contention in the Western Conference standings. The Desert Dogs host Detroit Monday before heading out on a three-game road trip.

                            Best over play

                            Calgary Flames (0-3 SU, 3-0 over/under)

The Flames have played over the number in five consecutive games thanks to their inability to keep the puck out of their own net. Calgary has allowed an average of nearly four goals per game during the over run and has yielded 10 markers over its last two losses. The Flames host the Blues Sunday before departing for Chicago for a clash with the Western Conference-leading Blackhawks Tuesday.

                            Best under play

                            Vancouver Canucks (3-1 SU, 0-4 over/under)

Cory Schneider appears to be back on track as he’s helped the Canucks go low in four consecutive games. Vancouver has yielded only six goals over its last four contests with Schneider only slipping up three times in as many starts during the under streak. Vancouver visits the lowly Avalanche Sunday before heading back north of the border for a clash with Columbus Tuesday.

                            Surveying the schedule:

-The Chicago Blackhawks return home Monday after going 3-1 on a four-game road trip. The Blackhawks now play five of their next six games at the friendly confines of the United Center, where they are 11-1-1 SU and 4-8-1 O/U.

-The Columbus Blue Jackets had their unbelievable 12-game points streak snapped Saturday in the opener of a four-game trip. The road hasn’t been kind to Columbus this season. The Jackets have a dismal 3-9-1 SU record and a 4-9 O/U mark away from home.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
