NHL Top 5: Trade deadline needs for contending teams
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the NHL trade deadline just over two weeks away, teams need to decide whether they will be buyers or sellers come the April 3 deadline.

Here’s a look at five contending teams that could be active at the deadline:

Stanley Cup futures odds courtesy of the LVH.

            Montreal Canadiens (10/1)

The Habs are in a dogfight for top spot in the Northeast Division with the Bruins and are the surprise team of the shortened campaign to this point. Goaltender Carey Price has elevated his game to a new level and Montreal is getting contributions from its young forwards such as rookie Brendan Gallagher. But is this really a team that can go deep in the playoffs with its current roster?

            Possible trade targets:

            Jarome Iginla (Flames)
            Daniel Alfredsson (Senators)
            Brenden Morrow (Stars)
            R.J. Umberger (Blue Jackets)

            Carolina Hurricanes (20/1)

The Hurricanes were dealt a blow when Cam Ward went down with a knee injury in early March, but they’re still in the hunt for the Southeast crown. There’s a possibility Ward could be ready for the playoffs should Carolina quality, but maybe a capable rental goalie such as Ben Bishop could help in the meantime?

            Possible trade targets:

            Jonathan Bernier (Kings)
            Miikka Kiprusoff (Flames)
            Ben Bishop (Senators)

            Winnipeg Jets (50/1)

The Jets find themselves at the top of the Southeast Division heading into action Monday. Winnipeg has a raucous fan base that’s hungry for playoff hockey and a roster that could benefit from the addition of some veteran leadership.

            Possible trade targets:

            Ryan Whitney (Oilers)
            Ales Hemsky (Oilers)
            Brenden Morrow (Stars)

            San Jose Sharks (30/1)

The Sharks are currently one of the teams on the playoff bubble in the Western Conference and could be seeking a scoring threat at the deadline. The Sharks average just 2.2 goals per game (29th) and could really use the help of a proven scorer to nail down a playoff spot.

            Possible trade targets:

            Jarome Iginla (Calgary)
            Paul Stastny (Colorado)
            Ales Hemsky (Edmonton)
            Corey Perry (Ducks)

            Minnesota Wild (20/1)

The Wild bolstered their roster with the additions of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter in the offseason, but they may need to make another move or two at the deadline to remain competitive in the West. Parise is the only Minnesota skater that has scored more than 10 goals and the Wild would benefit from adding an additional offensive threat with a cap-friendly price tag.

            Possible trade targets:

            Mike Ribeiro (Capitals)
            Drew Stafford (Sabres)
            Derek Roy (Stars)
            Sam Gagner (Oilers)
