    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of the Mets' top prospects........

    1) Zach Wheeler, P-- Allowed 23 hits in 33 IP in AAA last season.

Tor 1) Travis d'Arnaud, C-- Centerpiece of RA Dickey trade.

    6) Wilmer Flores, 2B/3B-- Hit .311 in half a season at AA last year.

    8) Jeurys Familia, P-- Closer of the future in Flushing?

    15) Matt Den Dekker, OF-- Tremendous fielder; will have to hit more.

    29) Steve Matz, P-- Injury-prone kid played against my godson in HS.

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.....

    13) UCLA coach Ben Howland put an end to the Shabazz Muhammad era in Westwood this weekend, saying the kid was going to the NBA next year. Muhammad has played well, UCLA is 23-8, for Howland to quickly send a star player on his way tells us one of two things.......
    a) The kid is a pain in the butt, but considering UCLA had Reeves Nelson a couple years ago, this option is less likely than........
    b) Had Muhammad returned, the NCAA would've come calling, and when the NCAA comes calling, often times the coach loses his job.

Either way, Howland has to recruit like a junior college coach; tremendous amount of turnover in his program.

    12) Sunday night at 11pm, replay of a White Sox-Padre spring training game, with the great Dick Enberg on the mike. Thats quality entertainment.

    11) Erik Compton is one of my heroes; guy has had two heart transplants, and he still plays on the PGA Tour. Compton finished T5 at Honda Classic this weekend in Florida, his first top 10 finish. Will somebody please make a movie about this guy?

    10) Sportsbook.com posted 43.5 as the over/under for any major leaguer hitting home runs this season, the lowest such total since 1996. The bet is whether or not you think any hitter will hit 44 HRs this season. Anyone.

    9) MAAC basketball tournament is next weekend in Springfield, MA, but there are no MAAC teams in Massachusetts, only one in Connecticut. What genius came up with this idea?

    Geographic breakdown of the MAAC:
-- two teams in eastern NY (Marist/Siena)
-- two teams in Buffalo area (Niagara/Canisius)
-- two teams in New Jersey (Rider/St Peter's)
    -- two teams in Westchester/Bronx (Iona/Manhattan)
-- Fairfield is in Connecticut, Loyola is in Maryland.

I am sure Springfield is a terrific place, but who is going to go to watch the MAAC tournament, when there are no local teams in it?

    8) Further examination of Joe Flacco's contract show a $29M payment in 2016, which means the contract will get re-done after 2015, making it, in effect, a 3-year deal. Still a very lucrative deal.

    7) There are bitter defeats, then there is Baylor's loss at home to Kansas State Saturday night. Game was tied with 0:01 left, Baylor had the ball out of bounds, 95 feet from the basket. Worst they can do is overtime, right?

Baylor throws a baseball pass length of court, but it goes out of bounds with no one touching it, so K-State gets it under their offensive basket- they set up a play, McGruder drains a 3 at the buzzer, and Baylor might be headed to the NIT as a result. Horrendous way to lose a game.

    6) Since 1985, only two teams won the NCAA tournament without having had at least one winning streak of 6+ games during the season: Arizona in 1997, Michigan State in 2000. We'll monitor that later this month.

    5) Virginia beats Duke, then loses at Boston College. Of course they did.

    4) Providence won six of last seven games, after starting Big East play 2-7; credit to Ed Cooley, who seems to have things going in the right direction with his Friars. Have to win recruiting battles before you can win games, and Cooley is an excellent recruiter.

    3) Was watching the European Tour on Golf Channel Sunday morning, and the 4th hole was a 685-yard par 5. 685 yards!!!! Hole wasn't too tough- the scoring average on it was something like 4.48.

    2) Tampa Bay Buccaneers have 24 assistant coaches; three other teams have 23. NFL teams only have 53 active players each week. Seems like overkill, but in fairness, three of the 24 Buc assistants are strength coaches. Still, thats a lot of assistants. What do they do all winter?

    1) Pretty good pair of games at Staples Center Sunday, with Thunder edging the Clippers and Lakers beating Atlanta by a point. Impossible to know, but wonder how many people were at both games?

Three teams off to hot starts in Spring Training

If you can’t wait until Opening Day to throw down your first MLB wager, sportsbooks are offering daily game lines for Spring Training games.

Here are three teams that are off to hot spring starts:

      Kansas City Royals (8-0)

The Royals have reeled off eight straight wins to open up the spring campaign, but what’s more impressive is their Cactus League-best +26 run differential. The Royals have four players batting over .500 and first baseman Eric Hosmer has already driven in seven runs in only 17 at-bats. Projections indicate the Royals will open the season with a franchise-record $79 million payroll.

      Seattle Mariners (8-1)

Seattle has won eight straight exhibition games, bashing 20 homers in the process. “We have a lot of options, and a lot of talent we can mix and match into a lineup," manager Eric Wedge said after Seattle’s most recent 9-5 victory over the Dodgers. "If there was ever a year to play a lot of spring games and let guys show us all of what they can do, this is it." Staff ace Felix Hernandez will throw a bullpen session Sunday and is projected to make his 2013 debut on Thursday against the Royals.

      Houston Astros (5-2)

The Houston Astros are expected to be a historically bad baseball team this year, but they sure have looked good so far. The Astros lead all American League teams in the Grapefruit League with 15 home runs. Houston’s defense, however, has been a different story. The Astros gave up six unearned runs to the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, and added four more blunders against the Braves on Saturday.

All stats prior to action Sunday.

Cincinnati at Louisville: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Bearcats at Louisville Cardinals (-10, 121)

Louisville may be one game out of first place, but has to like where it stands entering the final week of the regular season. The Cardinals will play the first of two straight home games to close out their schedule on Monday against Cincinnati. Louisville, winners of five in a row and eight of its last nine, hasn’t lost since its five-overtime setback against Notre Dame on Feb. 9, defeating four of its opponents over that span by at least 14 points.

The Cardinals – 13-1 at home this season – are coming off a 58-53 road victory over Syracuse on Saturday, but will be playing for the third game in six days when they host the Bearcats. Cincinnati halted a three-game skid with a 61-56 win over Connecticut, but finds itself in a three-way tie for ninth place with Providence and St. John’s. The Bearcats could strengthen their NCAA Tournament resume with a win, but a loss could damage their hopes of securing a first-round bye in the Big East Tournament.

        TV:
        7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT CINCINNATI (19-9, 7-8 Big East):
Sean Kilpatrick – the fourth-leading scorer in the conference – has led the team in scoring in nine of the last 11 contests. The junior guard has made a team-high 34 3-pointers and shooting 80.4 percent from the foul line during the stretch. Taking advantage of a Connecticut team without Shabazz Napier, the Bearcats outscored the Huskies 21-1 in points off turnovers Saturday. Since Cashmere Wright missed his only game of the season on Jan. 19 with a knee sprain, he is shooting 22.9 percent - including 19.7 percent beyond the arc. Over that 10-game stretch, Wright has shot over 30 percent from the field three times.

        ABOUT LOUISVILLE (24-5, 12-4):
During their winning streak, the Cardinals have limited their opponents to 35.5 percent shooting from the field and 54.2 points. For the season, Louisville has held 18 teams to less than 40 percent shooting and 18 to fewer than 60 points. The Cardinals are third nationally in turnover margin (plus-6.0) and have forced an average of 18.7 turnovers, scoring 661 of their 2140 points off opponents’ miscues. Gorgui Dieng posted his tenth double-digit rebounding performance with 14 boards against the Orange, surpassing 700 career rebounds in the process. Peyton Siva needs seven steals to match Darrell Griffith’s school record of 230.

        TRENDS:

        * Bearcats are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.
        * Cardinals are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.
        * Under is 6-1 in Bearcats’ last seven road games.
        * Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings.

        TIP-INS:

        1. This is the first meeting between the schools since last season’s Big East Championship title game.

        2. Cardinals coach Rick Pitino needs one more win to notch his 300th victory at Louisville.

        3. Cincinnati opponents are scoring 11.2 points below their season average this season when playing the Bearcats.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of February 24-March 2.

          Hottest ATS

Los Angeles Clippers (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)

After a mid-season slump, the Clippers appear to be gaining momentum for the stretch run. Los Angeles has picked up wins in four straight games and eight of its last nine. The Clippers have also covered in four consecutive games heading into Sunday’s home tilt with the Thunder.

          Coldest ATS

Toronto Raptors (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

The Raptors have dropped four straight (0-4 ATS) after winning six of their previous seven contests. Rudy Gay, who is averaging over 21 points per game since being acquired by the Raptors, is dealing with back spasms and now Toronto plays three tough road games against the Warriors, Suns and Lakers.

          Best over play

          Sacramento Kings (1-3 SU, 4-0 over/under)

The Kings played over the total in every contest of their recent five-game road trip. Sacramento’s defense was a disgrace on the trip, allowing opponents to score an average of 120.8 points per game. The Kings return home for games with the Bobcats and over-friendly Nuggets this week.

          Best under play

          Dallas Mavericks (1-3 SU, 0-4 over/under)

The Mavericks have gone low in four straight games after posting an 11-3 O/U mark in their previous 14 contests. Dallas is averaging 101 points per game this season, but is scoring 92.75 per contest during its current under run. The Mavericks play the first half of a home-and-home with the Rockets in Houston on Sunday.

          Scouting the schedule:

-The Chicago Bulls are entering a very tough portion of their schedule. Chicago visits Indiana and San Antonio this week before heading home for a clash with Utah. The Bulls then travel west for three games against the Lakers, Kings and Warriors. Chicago has been a pretty good bet on the road (17-11 ATS) and a horrible bet at home (9-22 ATS).

-The Utah Jazz head east for a four-game road trip beginning Monday in Milwaukee. The Jazz have been fade material on the road (10-18-1 ATS) but a great play at home (18-12 ATS) this season. Utah will also visit Cleveland, Chicago and New York this week.

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Feb. 24-Mar. 2.

            Hot team

            Chicago Blackhawks (4-0 SU)

The Blackhawks extended their winning streak to eight games with recent victories over St. Louis and Columbus. Chicago has secured at least a point in all 21 contests this season and 27 straight dating back to March 25, 2012. The Blackhawks are in Detroit Sunday and then head home for clashes with the Wild and Avalanche later in the week.

            Cold team

            Tampa Bay Lightning (0-4 SU)

After opening the season with six wins in seven games, the Lightning have just three in their last 14 contests. Tampa Bay boasts the league’s top offense (3.5 goals per game) but can’t keep pucks out of its own net. The Bolts open this week with a tough back-to-back set in Pittsburgh and New Jersey.

            Best over play

            Phoenix Coyotes (4-0 over/under)

The Coyotes have played over the total in four straight games to push their season O/U mark to 12-8-1. Mike Smith has seen an extremely heavy workload of late and his performance has suffered as a result. Smith has started 14 consecutive games and has yielded 15 goals over his last four. Phoenix squares off with Anaheim twice this week before enjoying a three-game homestand.

            Best under play

            San Jose Sharks (0-3 over/under)

Under bettors are loving the stingy Sharks. San Jose has gone low in eight consecutive games and 15 of 20 this season. Goaltender Antti Niemi boasts an impressive 1.83 GAA and the Sharks are yielding an average of only two goals per game. San Jose plays back-to-back road games in Vancouver and Calgary next.

            Surveying the schedule:

-The Edmonton Oilers continue their season-long nine-game road trip this week. The Oilers are 1-1-1 on the current trip and play five games in the next seven days. Edmonton is 3-7 O/U on the road.

-The Montreal Canadiens have earned points in 10 straight games but have a busy week ahead. The Habs hit the road for five games in seven days, beginning Sunday in Boston. Montreal boasts an impressive 5-1-0-2 record away from the Bell Centre.

Saint Louis remains red hot against the spread
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Saint Louis Billikens are hot and their bettors are cashing in.

The Billikens picked up their 11th consecutive victory with a 66-58 win over George Washington on Saturday and improved to 11-0 ATS during the winning streak.

The 11-game run is the Billikens' longest winning streak since they won 14 straight to start 1993-94. SLU already had clinched a first-round bye in the Atlantic 10 tournament prior to Saturday’s win and now can finish no worse than third place. A win in either of SLU’s final two games, at Xavier on Wednesday or at home against La Salle on Saturday, would give the Billikens at the least a share of the league title and the tournament’s No. 1 seed.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Saint Louis (23-5, 12-2 Atlantic 10) holds a one-game lead over VCU (23-6, 11-3), which routed Butler 84-52 on Saturday.

The Billikens have posted a 7-3-1 O/U mark during the winning streak and have held opposition to 58.3 points per game.

New York Knicks at Cleveland Cavaliers (+2.5, 202)

The Cavaliers expect to have All-Star guard Kyrie Irving (knee) back Monday. The Cavaliers have been without Irving for three straight, but rookie Dion Waiters has picked up the slack and has developed into a reliable perimeter scoring threat to pair with Irving. Cleveland dropped a 105-89 decision to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday but has won four of its last six games overall. The home team has taken each of the last six meetings in the series and the Knicks are 0-5 ATS in their last five trips to Cleveland.

Utah Jazz at Milwaukee Bucks (-4.5, 201.5)

The Utah Jazz hope to have big men Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap back from sprained ankles for this one. Jefferson and Millsap were not needed in Friday's 96-68 rout of Charlotte, as Enes Kanter stepped in for Jefferson at center and produced career highs with 23 points and 22 rebounds. The win snapped a three-game slide and set the Jazz off on a four-game road trip clinging to seventh place in the Western Conference. The Bucks are getting rather used to playing close games. Their last seven have been decided by single digits, including two in overtime. They needed five extra minutes to get past Toronto 122-114 on Saturday. The Jazz have won 13 of the last 15 meetings, including a 100-86 triumph at home on Feb. 6.

Orlando Magic at New Orleans Hornets (-9, 196)

The losses keep piling up for the Orlando Magic, who attempt to snap a three-game losing skid when they visit the Hornets. The Hornets will have top overall pick Anthony Davis (shoulder) back in the lineup and took the first meeting of the season between the two clubs, 97-94, on Dec. 26. New Orleans has won the last five overall meetings and also has a four-game home winning streak against the Magic. The over is 5-0 in the Hornets’ last five home games.

Miami Heat at Minnesota Timberwolves (+9.5, 196.5)

The Miami Heat are attempting to break the franchise’s record for longest winning streak with their 15th straight triumph on Monday. LeBron James suffered a minor leg injury on Sunday but stayed in the game and came through with big shots and a key steal down the stretch in a 99-93 win over the New York Knicks. LeBron is hoping to play Monday. The Timberwolves have dropped five straight games overall and Miami has taken five straight in the series and four in a row at Minnesota. The over is 7-0 in the Heat’s last seven games vs. Western Conference foes.

Atlanta Hawks at Denver Nuggets (-10, 212)

The Denver Nuggets will try to extend their home winning streak to 11 games when they host the Hawks. Atlanta is in the process of playing six games in the first nine days of March and Denver is 43-8 since the start of the 2009-10 season when hosting an opponent playing the second half of a back-to-back. The Nuggets are 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games.

Charlotte Bobcats at Portland Trail Blazers (-13, 198)

The Portland Trail Blazers are competing to remain in the Western Conference playoff race and seek their third win in four games when they host Charlotte.
