    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

According to Baseball America, six top prospects of the AL West champ Oakland A's.......

    1) Addison Russell, SS-- High school kid hit .369 in three different leagues in his first pro season LY.

    2) Michael Choice OF-- Season ended early LY with a broken hand.

    5) Sonny Gray, P-- Led Vanderbilt to its first College World Series.

    8) Grant Green 2B/OF-- USC alum can hit, struggling to find a position.

    18) Michael Ynoa, P-- 21-year old signed with Oakland five years ago.

    27) Stephen Parker, 3B-- BYU alum hit .256 in PCL LY, a hitters' league.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Things I'd change, if I could........

    13) Designated hitter should be used for All-Star games, all exhibition games, but never in the regular season. Its a gimmick; if a guy can't play any position in the field, then he should just pinch-hit or retire.

    12) Lower the drinking age to 18; you're old enough to go to war, you're old enough to have a freakin' beer.

    11) No conceding putts in these match play golf tournaments; you're a pro, make a 2-foot putt. Someone has to explain to me why this happens.

    10) We talked about this earlier this month: college basketball teams should get one timeout, per team, per half. Make the game flow better. Multiple timeouts at the end of games allow coaches to strangle the game.

    9) NBA teams should be able to play any defense they want. Nothing in the sports world bothers me as much as defensive three seconds. NBA is all about protecting the star players, and that cheapens the product.

    8) I'd legalize gambling on sports. Its going to happen; too much money involved for it not to happen.

    7) I'd find a way to lower the price of gas in this country; people that own the oil/gas companies are corrupt, thieving bastards, and so are the politicians that allow it to happen.

    6) Some enterprising human who wants to make a lot of money would bring In 'n Out Burger to upstate New York. Best milkshake I've ever had, and I take milkshakes very seriously.

    5) College football's playoff system would be eight teams, three weeks, and it would generate a fortune. Thats why all this conference realignment is happening; everyone wants a piece of the pie.

    4) When ESPN first started 30+ years ago, the first conference that let them air games was the Sun Belt Conference. Now? No Sun Belt games. How about giving them a weekly 9:00 timeslot some weeknight? Gratitude is a good thing, ya know?

    3) I'd lower the price of concessions at movie theaters; these people are right behind the gas companies as thieves. How much can popcorn cost?

    2) This is a little selfish, but A's would be allowed to move to San Jose; the baseball Giants got their new stadium, why can't the A's get one?

    1) Kids should be able to go straight from high school to NBA, if they're good enough. Baseball players can do it; why not basketball? Think it would help college basketball; one-and-done kids are a joke- they're not students.

If you had to guess, what are the odds Shabazz Muhammad knows where the library is at UCLA? He's off to the NBA as soon as this season ends.

    *****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday..........

    13) Wild day in SEC Saturday, with four of seven games going to OT, with Alabama-LSU going three OTs, Tennesseee-Texas A&M four OTs. Big win for Kentucky over Mizzou, as Wildcats are a bubble team without Noel.

    12) Tennessee is now hottest team in SEC, winning its fifth game in row, but Florida Gators come to Knoxville Tuesday, which should be interesting. .

    11) ESPN signed a new TV deal with whats left of the Big East, but for less than what each team makes now. Somehow, I doubt Big East will maintain its 8pm Saturday night slot during Championship Week, not with potential of a Tulane-Central Florida final. Big East will basically be Conference USA next year, with Cincinnati returning to its Metro/Great Midwest roots.

    10) Iona's month from hell continued with a 65-64 loss at Indiana State; Gaels lost six of their last seven games, with three OT losses and three others by a total of six points. For a team that ranks #83 in experience, this isn't what is supposed to happen at the end of games.

    9) New Mexico had a terrific 91-82 win at Colorado State, with Kendall Williams going 10-13 behind arc, scoring a ridiculous 46 points. Whole Syracuse team scored 46 points in its home loss to Georgetown.

    8) They retired Carmelo Anthony's jersey in the Carrier Dome Saturday, despite fact that Anthony went to school at Syracuse for about 10 minutes. He did win them a national championship, then he paid for their new practice facility, so I guess thats what it takes to get your jersey retired.

    7) Will be interesting to see if golfer Steve Stricker sticks with his plan to play in only 11 tournaments this year, skipping British Open but playing in the Quad Cities (John Deere) Classic. Must be nice to have money.

    6) Interesting prop bet in Las Vegas; which team will win more games in 2013, Alabama (-$140) or the 49ers (+$120)?

    5) There were 79 SEC players working out at NFL Combine this week, compared to 43 from the ACC, 38 from the Pac-12.

    4) Eight Fridays so far in 2013; stock market went up all eight days.

    3) On Mets' TV broadcast of its spring training game Saturday, Ron Darling/ Keith Hernandez inferred that it is easier to win a Gold Glove Award (sponsored by Rawlings) if you use a Rawlings glove. Go figure.

    2) The jersey Mike Eruzione wore in the 1980 Miracle on Ice game sold for $657,250 on Saturday night. The stick Eruzione used was sold for $262,900 in an auction run by Heritage Auctions in New York City.

Other items Eruzione sold through the auction company included his jersey worn in the gold medal win against Finland ($286,800), the warmup suit he wore during the gold medal ceremony ($26,290), Eruzione-used Team USA gloves ($53,775) and used pants ($26,680).

    1) Someone on Twitter posted a great video yesterday from 35 years ago, when Brian Billick was a contestant on Match Game PM, which was a popular game show at the time, with panelists like Charles Nelson Reilly, Fannie Flagg and Brett Somers. Good stuff. Not sure Billick would think so.

World Baseball Classic preview and sleepers

Betting on spring training is a good warm up for baseball bettors, but wagering on the World Baseball Classic is a more enticing option.

Play gets underway on March 1, so it’s time to get down to business.

The 16-team field is broken into four pools of four teams each. The first round will be played as a round-robin tournament where every team plays other members of its pool once.

The second round is a modified double-elimination tournament, and the championship round requires a team to win two games (semifinal and final) in order to be declared the WBC champs.

Here are the group breakdowns and one sleeper team that could advance in each pool. All futures odds are courtesy of UWIN.

      Pool A

      Brazil (+10,000), China (+3,300), Cuba (+2,500), Japan (+350)

      Sleeper team: Brazil

Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin is the manager of Brazil, which is making its first WBC appearance after upsetting Panama in qualifying. The Brazilian squad is loaded with developing talent, as 11 players are currently playing in various minor league systems. This young team has nothing to lose and everything to gain in a tough group.

      Pool B

      Australia (+6,600), Chinese Taipei (+2,200), Korea (+1,400), Netherlands (+3,300)

      Sleeper team: Netherlands

Pitching won’t be a strong suit for the Netherlands, but its bats may be the talk of Group B. The Dutch infield is loaded with top MLB prospects like Andrelton Simmons (Braves), Xander Bogaerts (Red Sox), and Jonathan Schoop (Orioles). The Netherlands also has some proven MLB talent to rely on. Andruw Jones and Roger Bernadina will patrol the outfield for the Dutch.

      Pool C

Dominican Republic (+350), Puerto Rico (+1,600), Spain (+10,000), Venezuela (+800)

Sleeper team: The Dominican Republic is stacked and will be hard to beat, but if anyone has a chance to derail them it’s Venezuela. Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Gonzalez will be counted on to drive in runs, while Jhoulys Chacin and Anibal Sanchez should keep opposing hitters at bay.

      Pool D

      Canada (+1,400), Italy (+10,000), Mexico (+2,000), United States (+250)

      Sleeper team: Mexico

Pool D is loaded with MLB talent and Mexico is no exception. Brewers’ ace Yovani Gallardo is a force to be reckoned with and Adrian Gonzalez is a proven run producer. Former major leaguers Jorge Cantu and Karim Garcia will provide a veteran presence and have experience hitting big league pitching.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Study group: Monday’s Top 25 NCB betting notes
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Tech at (13) Kansas State (-19.5, 137)

Kansas State shares first place in the conference with Kansas and the Wildcats have four games remaining to chase their first regular-season title since winning the Big Eight championship in 1976-77. The Wildcats, who are 13-1 at home, have won seven of their last eight, including three straight, and are coming off an 81-69 victory at Texas on Saturday. Kansas State has won the last six meetings against Texas Tech, including a 68-59 victory Feb. 5 in Lubbock. The Red Raiders are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 road games.

        (8) Syracuse at (20) Marquette (Pick, 131)

Syracuse and Marquette were tied with Georgetown for first place in the Big East entering last weekend, but losses by both teams on Saturday dropped each of them a game off the pace. The Orange, who have lost three of their last four road games, will have a short turnaround against Marquette, which owns the country’s second-longest active home winning streak at 23. Syracuse is 4-4 over its last eight games and the conference’s second-highest scoring offense has failed to top 58 points in three of those contests or shoot better than 36.7 percent from the field. The Golden Eagles are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games following an ATS loss.

        (9) Kansas at Iowa State (+1, 144)

Iowa State has the third-longest active home-winning streak in the nation at 22 games and is 31-2 at Hilton Coliseum over the last two seasons. The Jayhawks needed overtime to beat visiting Iowa State on Jan. 9. Ben McLemore scored a season-high 33 points in that game, but the standout Kansas freshman guard has been held under his team-high 16.2 scoring average in the last three games. The Jayhawks will have to defend the perimeter in this one as the Cyclones have made a nation-leading 260 3-pointers this season, converting 10 or more in six straight games. Iowa State is 5-0 ATS in its last five home games.

Habs at Senators: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (+104, 5)

A recent injury to starting goaltender Craig Anderson hasn’t slowed the Ottawa Senators, who are on a season-high four-game winning streak. On Sunday, the Senators host the Montreal Canadiens for the third of four meetings between the Northeast Division rivals. Ottawa had already lost first-line center Jason Spezza and top defenseman Erik Karlsson to season-ending injuries when Anderson left Thursday’s game against the New York Rangers with an ankle injury. The Senators clawed out a 3-2 shootout victory and defeated Toronto by the same score at home on Saturday to trail Montreal by two points for the Northeast Division lead.

The Canadiens have points in their last seven games - with the only blemish being a 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Islanders on Thursday. Montreal starting goaltender Carey Price made 17 saves against the Rangers on Saturday for his second shutout in four starts, while Max Pacioretty has seven points his last five games - including his first four goals of the season. Rookie Alex Galchenyuk had a goal and an assist against the Rangers. Selected third overall in the 2012 draft, Galchenyuk has four points in as many games and 12 on the season.

          TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, RDS, TSN Canadiens, Sportsnet East

          ABOUT THE CANADIENS (12-4-2):
Pacioretty did not receive any additional punishment from the league on Sunday following his boarding penalty on Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh. Rookie Brendan Gallagher returned to the lineup on Saturday after missing three games with a concussion. Gallagher has five goals and eight points in 14 games. Tomas Plekanec leads the team with eight goals and is tied with Pacioretty for the team lead in points (13). David Desharnais has five points in his last five games. Raphael Diaz leads team defensemen with 12 points.

          ABOUT THE SENATORS (11-6-2):
Colin Greening, who scored the winning goal and added two assists on Saturday, has five points on his three-game scoring streak. Greening went eight games without recording a point prior to this streak. Captain Daniel Alfredsson has four points in his last six games. Rookies Jakob Silfverberg and Mika Zibanejad have both contributed three points on Ottawa’s winning streak. Backup goaltender Ben Bishop has wins in his last three games.

          TRENDS:

          * The home team is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
          * The under is 5-1 in Canadiens’ last six overall.
          * The under is 3-0-1 in Senators’ last four Monday games.
          * Senators are 5-1 in their last six after allowing two goals or less in their previous game.

          OVERTIME:

          1. The Senators defeated the Canadiens 5-1 at home on Jan. 30, but lost 2-1 in Montreal four days later.

          2. Canadiens D P.K. Subban has eight points in 12 games since rejoining the team following a contract dispute. Montreal is 8-2-2 this season with Subban in the lineup.

          3. Alfredsson, who is seven points away from reaching 1,100 for his career, has 104 points in 87 career games against the Canadiens.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Feb. 17-23.

          Hot team

          Chicago Blackhawks (3-0 SU)

Chicago improved to 14-0-3 after posting a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday, setting the record for most games without a regulation loss to start a season. The lowly Blue Jackets visit the United Center Sunday, and then Edmonton rolls into the Windy City on Monday.

          Cold team

          Buffalo Sabres (0-4 SU)

Not even a coaching change could spark this team. The axe dropped on long-time coach Lindy Ruff because of the Sabres’ poor start and now interim head coach Ron Rolston has the daunting task of cleaning up the mess. Buffalo travels to the Sunshine State this week for clashes with the Lightning and Panthers.

          Best over play

          Philadelphia Flyers (4-0 over/under)

The Flyers are back on track after a slow start, posting wins in three of their last four games. Philadelphia has found the back of the net 20 times during that stretch and Scott Hartnell has returned from injury to provide an added offensive punch. The Flyers continue their five-game homestand Monday when the Maple Leafs visit Wells Fargo Center.

          Best under play

          San Jose Sharks (0-3 over/under)

After opening the season with seven straight wins, the Sharks have dropped nine of their last 10 games. San Jose has scored an average of 1.2 goals per game during the losing skid, resulting in its stellar 4-12-1 O/U mark. San Jose returns to the Shark Tank for three contests with the Avalanche, Red Wings and Predators this week.

          Surveying the schedule:

-The Edmonton Oilers begin a daunting nine-game road trip Monday in Chicago. The Oilers will play those nine contests over 17 days and have been an excellent under play away from Rexall Place (1-6 O/U).

-The New York Islanders begin a seven-game homestand Sunday when they host the Hurricanes, but that isn't necessarily a good thing for New York. The Isles have a horrendous 2-6 SU record at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-5.5, 216)

The Los Angeles Lakers can reach the .500 mark for the first time since being 8-8 on Nov. 30 when they visit the Denver Nuggets on Monday. The Lakers have won 11 of 15 games since bottoming out at eight games below .500 and are making a charge at landing a Western Conference playoff spot. Denver has the fifth-best record in the West and is a sensational 23-3 at home. The Nuggets are 2-1 against the Lakers this season.

Denver has won eight consecutive home games since falling to the Washington Wizards on Jan. 18. The Nuggets notched a 113-99 road victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday. The Lakers defeated the Dallas Mavericks 103-99 on Sunday and their recent hot stretch has moved them within 2 1/2 games of eighth-place Houston in the playoff race. “They are playing better and we need to continue to sustain the home court,” Denver coach George Karl said. “The Lakers aren’t a playoff team now, but they are playing like one.” Los Angeles is 10-18 on the road.

Kobe Bryant recently guaranteed that Los Angeles will make the playoffs and he has posted back-to-back terrific efforts against Portland and Dallas. Bryant scored 40 points in Friday’s victory over the Trail Blazers before coming back with 38 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists against the Mavericks. “That’s why he’s Kobe Bryant,” Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni said after the win over Dallas. “He’s not John Smith. No disrespect to John Smith, whoever he is. That’s what he does, that’s what he loves. That’s what he trains for.” Point guard Steve Nash scored 20 points – the first time he has reached that total with the Lakers.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (35-22, 33-24-0 ATS):
Point guard Ty Lawson has a career-best six consecutive 20-point outings after scoring 20 in the win over Charlotte. Lawson is averaging 26.2 points during the stretch as he has been looking to score more than he usually does. “I figure when I start being aggressive and getting to the lane, things happen for me whether it’s scoring or getting assists,” Lawson said. The fourth-year pro is averaging 16.3 points and 7.1 assists. Forward Danilo Gallinari is dealing with a thigh injury and his status will be firmed up in the hours prior to the contest. Gallinari leads the Nuggets with a 16.9 average.

            TRENDS:

            * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
            * Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
            * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
            * Under is 13-5 in the last 18 meetings in Denver.
            * Lakers are 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Denver.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. Denver is 9-6 in its last 15 regular-season contests against Los Angeles.

            2. Lakers C Dwight Howard is averaging 13.4 rebounds over his last five games to raise his season mark to 11.9.

            3. The Nuggets are 22-3 when holding opponents under 100 points.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last week’s edition was put on hold because of the NBA All-Star Weekend, so we’ve expanded this week’s article to include games from Feb. 11-23.

            Hottest ATS

Miami Heat (5-0 SU, 5-0 ATS)

The Heat are on an absolute tear, picking up wins in 10 straight games. LeBron and Co. have also ripped off seven consecutive covers heading into Sunday’s clash with the Cavaliers. Sacramento and Memphis visit South Beach later this week.

            Coldest ATS

Milwaukee Bucks (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS)

The Bucks have been fade material for the entire month of February, posting a 1-9 ATS mark. However, Milwaukee has been a great bet on the road (15-11 ATS). The Bucks have a tough back-to-back in Dallas and Houston on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home for a pair of games.

            Best over play

            Oklahoma City Thunder (1-3 SU, 4-0 over/under)

The Thunder halted a season-high three-game losing streak with a 127-111 win over the lowly T-Wolves Friday. Oklahoma City has played over the number in four straight and six of its last seven contests thanks to its potent offense, which averages 106.7 points per game. Chicago visits Sunday before OKC hosts the Hornets Wednesday.

            Best under play

            Washington Wizards (3-2 SU, 1-4 over/under)

It’s no secret the Wizards are a great bet with a 33-19-2 ATS mark, but Washington is also satisfying under bettors with its 21-31-2 O/U record. The Wiz shipped Jordan Crawford to the Celtics at the trade deadline, putting even more pressure on John Wall and Bradley Beal to carry the offense moving forward. Washington is at red-hot Toronto Monday before returning home for three games.

            Scouting the schedule:

-The Atlanta Hawks edged the Bucks 103-102 Saturday in the first contest of their current six-game road trip. The Hawks are in Detroit Monday before heading west for four tough games in Utah, Phoenix, L.A. (Lakers) and Denver. Atlanta has been a better bet on the road (14-12 ATS) than it has at home (10-16-2 ATS) this season.

-The Portland Trail Blazers are mired in a seven-game losing skid and will try to stop the bleeding when Boston visits Sunday. The Blazers are a much better team at home, posting a 17-9 SU record at the Rose Garden. Denver, Minnesota and Charlotte will also visit the Rose Garden over the next eight days.

Around the rink: Monday's NHL betting notes
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Philadelphia Flyers (-141, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Ben Scrivens (TOR), Ilya Bryzgalov (PHI)

The Flyers, who have won three of their last four contests, will look to avenge a disheartening 5-2 loss to Toronto on Feb. 11. Toronto was off to a blistering start away from the Air Canada Centre, but has dropped three of its last four to see its mark dip to 7-4-0. Flyers F Jakub Voracek has collected four goals and eight assists in his last five contests. The 12-point effort in the five-game stretch is the first by a member of the Flyers since Peter Forsberg in 2005. The over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (+118, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Carey Price (MTL), Ben Bishop (OTT)

A recent injury to starting goaltender Craig Anderson hasn’t slowed the Ottawa Senators, who are on a season-high four-game winning streak. The Senators defeated the Canadiens 5-1 at home on Jan. 30, but lost 2-1 in Montreal four days later. The home team is 5-0 in the last five meetings.

Dallas Stars at Nashville Predators (-158, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Cristopher Nilstorp (DAL), Pekka Rinne (NSH)

The Predators are having trouble finding the back of the net. Nashville failed to score over the weekend, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Vancouver Canucks at home on Friday and falling 4-0 on the road to the Detroit Red Wings the following night. Dallas has scored three or more goals in nine consecutive games since being blanked by the Phoenix Coyotes on Feb. 2, going 6-3-0 in those contests. The under is 11-2-3 in the Predators’ last 16 home games.

Edmonton Oilers at Chicago Blackhawks (-177, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Nikolai Khabibulin (EDM), Ray Emery (CHI)

Chicago has gone 24 consecutive games without a regulation loss, dating back to last season. Blackhawks G Ray Emery is 7-0-0 this season and has won four straight starts. Edmonton has benefited from the recent resurgence of veteran G Nikolai Khabibulin. In four games this season, Khabibulin is 2-2-0 with a 1.89 goals-against average and .942 save percentage. The under is 9-1-1 in the Blackhawks’ last 11 home games.

Anaheim Ducks at Los Angeles Kings (-140, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Viktor Fasth (ANH), Jonathan Quick (LAK)

The Anaheim Ducks attempt to extend their winning streak to seven games when they visit the Kings. Los Angeles is looking to avenge a 7-4 loss at Anaheim on Feb. 2, a game in which it erased three deficits but never led. The Kings have won three in a row and five of six, allowing one goal in each of the victories. Los Angeles is 6-0 in its last six Monday games.

Report: Niners QB Smith heading to KC

A deal is reportedly in place for the San Francisco 49ers to trade quarterback Alex Smith.

Jason La Canfora of CBSsports.com reported Sunday that a trade for Smith is “effectively complete,” but cannot be finalized until the league year officially begins on March 12.

The Kansas City Chiefs are presumed to be the frontrunners for the displaced Smith’s services. Smith has two years left on his current contract, and is set to cash $8.5 million this season, including a $1 million roster bonus. He is to make $7.5 million in 2014.

Steve Mikkelson, sportsbook manager at the Atlantis Casino in Reno, Nevada, currently has the Chiefs at 50/1 in his NFL futures and says the potential acquisition of Smith wouldn’t improve those odds.

“He (Smith) isn’t a top 20 quarterback in the league,” Mikkelson told Covers. “There are only a handful of teams he would be a starter for next season.”

Jay Rood, sportsbook director for the MGM Mirage in Las Vegas, has a different view on Smith.

"They (Chiefs) have already been bet down from 150/1 to 50/1 when Andy Reid was named the new head coach," Rood told Covers. "If Smith ends up there they would probably fall to 40/1.

The 28-year-old has thrown for 14,280 yards with 81 touchdowns and 63 interceptions in 80 career NFL games.
