    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Bad news for NBC/World Match Play, with McIlroy/Woods getting beat in first round Thursday; with Mickelson/Snedeker not even there, going to hurt the star power of the later rounds.

-- Delaware beat Drexel 73-71 in double OT, as goaltending wasn't called on Dragons' last-second shot. Very, very close call.

-- Cal 48, Oregon 46-- Bears beat Oregon for 11th time in row, despite star player Crabbe fighting foul trouble. Bad loss for the Ducks.

-- UConn beat Cincinnati in OT; Huskies scored 18 points in second half, then scored another 18, just in the 5:00 OT.

-- Stanford 82, Oregon State 72-- Another bad loss for the Beavers, who do not play like a well-coached team.

-- Bobby Valentine is the new AD at Sacred Heart? Where did that come from? Baseball coach at Sacred Heart is Nick Giaquinto, who has been at the school for 25 years, after playing in the NFL for four seasons.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here.....

    13) Back in December I touted the Minnesota Gophers as a Final Four sleeper, but Tubby’s team stopped making shots; they’ve lost seven of last ten games, made just 5 of 29 behind the arc in their last two games. Hard to beat good teams on the road if you do not make shots.

    12) As of 1pm Thursday, the Colorado Rockies’ spring training field in Arizona was still covered by snow.

Rockies’ new manager is former big league SS Walt Weiss, who I’m pretty sure was a high school coach in the Denver area LY.

    11) The whole Tim Tebow/preaching/church thing was boring to me, until I realized; there’s a church that seats 11,000 people? Imagine what the collection totals must be in that place?

    10) Iowa-Nebraska basketball game was moved from Thursday night to Saturday afternoon because of a bad storm in the midwest.

    9) Wichita had 14 inches of snow, apparently the 2nd-biggest snowfall in the city's history. That surprised me.

    8) 5.7M people watched the NASCAR race on FOX last Saturday night, and that was an exhibition race. For some reason I like watching racing, even though I know almost nothing about it.

The FOX announcers are good, especially Darrell Waltrip, and sometimes its just more fun if you don’t care who wins.

    7) ESPN has too much live airtime; if there is no news to report, they have their people make stuff up and speculate on “what would happen, if….”. Not a big fan of that; report what happened, and talk about consequences of what happened. Don’t be making stuff up that might happen.

    6) NFL wants to push back its offseason schedule, shifting the draft into May, the combine to March, free agency to April. They need the Players' Union to agree before it can happen.

    5) MLB Network is aring a reality show called “Next Knuckler” about guys in other sports trying to become a knuckleball pitcher in the big leagues; winner gets a tryout with the Diamondbacks.

One of the contestants was former LSU/Giants’ practice squad QB Ryan Perrilloux, who did not make it through to the finals of the series.

    4) New Orleans Saints wind up forfeiting the 45th pick in this year’s draft because of Bountygate, the 13th pick in the 2nd round.

Considering that Joe Montana was a 3rd-round pick and Tom Brady a 6th-round pick, that’s not cheap.

    3) Rick Pitino owns a colt named Goldencents that is listed as a Kentucky Derby contender. Would be interesting if he ran for the roses in May.

    2) Saint Louis-Butler is an excellent game on TV Friday night- unusual to have such a good college game up against the Friday night NBA games.

    1) Wednesday was the first time golfer Louis Oosthuizen had ever seen snow in his life. As in, ever. Lucky him.

Four MLB teams that thrive in Spring Training

If you are to venture into the mystery world that is preseason MLB action beginning Friday, maybe stick to these clubs, who have shown a bit more fight during their tune-up schedule the past few seasons:

Toronto Blue Jays (24-7 in 2012)

The Blue Jays loaded up with veterans in the offseason and snagged a new manager in the process. Toronto looks like a serious contender on paper, but it’s John Gibbons’ job to make sure this team develops chemistry and is ready to blast out of the gates on Opening Day. This is the manager’s second stint with the club and the pressure is on for results. Gibbons has had a tendency in the past to lean hard on his veteran players throughout the spring.

      Detroit Tigers (20-8 in 2012)

Tigers’ hitters have feasted on young pitchers during the warm up for the past few seasons. Detroit drove in a Grapefruit League-best 195 runs in 2012 and boasts a very impressive 58-34 record over the past three spring campaigns. The Tigers will welcome another big bat back to their lineup Friday. Veteran catcher/designated hitter Victor Martinez (knee) will take his first swings in a game since the 2011 playoffs and should get plenty of at-bats to shake the rust off.

Los Angeles Angels (19-12 in 2012)

Expectations are higher than ever for the Angels after signing Josh Hamilton, so expect them to get right down to business this spring. Manager Mike Scioscia takes Spring Training seriously, posting a 76-48 record over the past four sessions.

San Francisco Giants (18-15 in 2012)

The defending World Series champions have been a great spring bet over the last four years. The Giants posted a mediocre 18-15 record last spring but had previously put together an impressive 67-43 run from 2009-2011. Pitching is the backbone of this squad and they will have a chance to win every game this spring because of their depth.

Saint Louis at Butler: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Saint Louis at Butler (-2.5)

No. 15 Butler is one of two ranked teams in the Atlantic 10 – along with No. 24 Virginia Commonwealth – but neither team has been able to figure out Saint Louis. The Bulldogs will take one final shot at the conference leaders Friday when they host the Billikens. Saint Louis, which holds a half-game lead over the Bulldogs and Rams, began the conference season 1-2 but has been the best team in the league since.

Much like the Billikens’ first meeting against Butler – a 75-58 home victory on Jan. 31 – Saint Louis used stifling defense to defeat VCU on Tuesday and won its eighth straight game, improving to 2-0 against the more highly-regarded schools in the Atlantic 10. The Bulldogs, who are 5-1 since their loss to the Billikens, are 13-1 at Hinkle Fieldhouse and figure to improve on their dreadful 23-turnover performance in the first meeting.

                TV:
                7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

                ABOUT SAINT LOUIS (20-5, 9-2 Atlantic 10):
Following the loss to the Billikens in January, Butler coach Brad Stevens said, "It was an absolute joy to watch one team play. The problem was, it wasn't the team I coached." St. Louis enjoys the conference’s stingiest scoring defense (57.9) and ranks second in the A-10 with 11.4 turnovers per game. The Billikens held VCU’s conference-leading offense 16 points below its season average and became only the second team this season to commit fewer than 10 turnovers against the Rams’ vaunted pressure defense.

                ABOUT BUTLER (22-5, 9-3):
Rotnei Clarke continued his scoring spree in Tuesday’s win and is averaging 18.9 points since his return from a neck injury eight games ago, leading his team in scoring each time. The Bulldogs are 14-0 when Khyle Marshall (9.9 points) scores in double figures, but the junior forward endured one of the worst performances of his career in the first meeting, scoring two points in 10 minutes before fouling out. Butler has outrebounded 10 of its last 11 opponents. Stevens is two wins shy of tying Pittsburgh’s Jamie Dixon (2004-09) for the most wins by a coach in his first six seasons in Division I history.

                TRENDS:

                * The over is 5-1 in the Billikens’ last six games.
                * Saint Louis is 8-0 ATS in its last eight games.
                * The under is 4-1 in Butler’s last five games.
                * The Bulldogs have only covered once in their last four games.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Saint Louis is 3-1 against top-25 opponents, but has never defeated four ranked foes in the same season.

                2. Butler is 82-12 at Hinkle Fieldhouse under Stevens.

                3. All eight of the victories during the Billikens’ winning streak are by double digits – a first in their 97-year history.
