    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- It snowed in Arizona Wednesday, so the Match Play golf tournament was delayed. Sleet, slush, snow. In Arizona. Yikes.

-- Underrated thing: how college referees in their 50's/60's work 5-6 games a week. Its not easy running up and down with college kids, but 3-man crews obviously make it a lot easier than it was with two-man crews.

-- Northwestern was down 28-12 at home at halftime last night; how long before they go out and get a coach who will at least play entertaining ball? I want to be Bruce Pearl's agent; Northwestern should definitely hire him.

-- James Harden hung 46 on his old team, with eight rebounds, six assists, as the Rockets upset Oklahoma City 122-119. Wow.

-- Sacramento Kings saved $3.7M with its trade Wednesday with Houston; saving money is about all the Kings are good at.

-- Montclair State's womens' hoop team is 26-0, but won't host any NCAA tournament games, because New Jersey wants to legalize sports betting. I wish I was making that up, but its true.

Armadillo: Thursday’s List of 13: Things I’m watching for this baseball season

    13) With Houston moving to the AL West, there are 15 teams in both leagues now, which means interleague play will be a daily fact of life. Hows that going to work out?

    12) Josh Hamilton switched teams within the same division, which doesn’t happen a lot for star players, then he ripped the Dallas-Fort Worth area, not really sure why. Angel-Ranger games figure to be interesting this year.

    11) Halos have Trout-Hamilton-Pujols in the middle of the lineup, and $24M Vernon Wells riding the pine; they should jog in the AL West right? They’re still lacking at 3B and in bullpen, so we’ll see about that.

    10) Astros’ entire team makes less money than Alex Rodriguez this season, and ARod may not even play after hip surgery. Houston was terrible in the NL LY, now their roster is further stripped down and they’re in a better league. I think their management knows what they’re doing, but in baseball, a total overhaul like this takes some time- they figure to draft very high for the next couple years, at least.

    9) Bronx Bombers owe ARod $114M over next five years; this is great on many levels, mainly that ARod appears to be washed up, or at least severely over-the-hill. If Robinson Cano jumps ship (Dodgers??) after this year, the new Bronx ballpark could become a very expensive mausoleum for a fading franchise.

    8) Carl Crawford’s career numbers in no way suggest a $20M annual salary, but that’s what he makes; his agent’s 3% take ($600,000 a year) is more than what the President of the US makes. Very curious to see how CC does in Chavez Ravine, where he’ll undoubtedly be more comfortable than in Boston. Veteran players switching leagues don't always thrive.

    7) Royals GM Dayton Moore knows he is gone if Kansas City sucks again this year, so he dumped prospects Myers/Odorizzi to Tampa Bay for James Shields, in hopes of winning enough games to save his job; this is the worst possible scenario for a franchise.

Shields has a lot of miles on him and while he’s effective, he’s not a big-time ace. Tampa Bay fleeced the Royals if Myers is what most scouts think he is, a big-time bat. Moore will get fired and the Royals will start yet another in a long line of rebuilding projects.

    6) Pirates’ last winning season was 1992; they’ve had strong first halves the last two years, but then faded badly late in both seasons.

Bucs extended manager Clint Hurdle thru 2014; is this the year Pittsburgh has a winning record?

    5) If the season started today, Mets’ starting OF would be Lucas Duda-Colin Cowgill-Marlon Byrd. Did I mention the Mets are a big market team, with a brand new stadium? How is this your starting outfield?

    4) With enhanced instant replay tabled until 2014, will the umpires screw up as many obvious calls as they did last year? How hard would it be to put enhanced replay into place this season? Apparently MLB is not sure if they want to have a challenge system like the NFL or review anything close.

I’m in favor of the challenge system, only review things deemed important by one of the managers.

    3) Which major league star gets hurt playing in the goofy World Baseball Classic? Its only once every four years, but still, how can any team allow its pitchers to compete in this?

    2) Toronto Blue Jays are favored to win the AL East this year, after the Orioles made the playoffs LY; think about that one for a second. Lot of money being spent in this division, with not much return on the buck.

    1) Then there are the Dodgers, who spent $100M to refurbish Dodger Stadium this winter, and will have the largest payroll to ever start a season. No pressure on Don Mattingly, who has yet to show much as a skipper. Pressure is squarely on him, but he has a lot of chips to play with.

He shouldn’t worry that Tony LaRussa is sitting out there without a job. Nope, not at all.

How to safely bet MLB spring training action

Heading south to catch some MLB spring training action or even tuning in during a lazy afternoon is harmless. You get to check out the newest crop of players and pitchers while catching up with some of your old favorites.

But the second you start betting on spring training baseball, you might be in trouble. The majority of sharp bettors stay clear of spring training because there is no discernible edge over the sportsbooks. And that’s a big red light when it comes to pro handicappers.

“While logic would tend to dictate playing on the team putting more of its better players on the field, that is not really the way that many of the games play out,” pro handicapper David Malinsky says of the exhibition baseball. “When starters are on the field, they often lack any real urgency and instead just focus on slowly getting into shape, not risking injury. Meanwhile, when younger players were on the field they would be playing much harder, trying to either win a job immediately or create a favorable impression that could lead to an earlier call-up later in the season.”

The sharps’ logic makes percent sense. But there is one colossal conundrum: Sports bettors love action.

If we all did the right things we would be thinner, not smoke or drink, eat more fruits and vegetables and watch Dancing With The Stars with our significant other every week. Guess what, maybe half those things happen for awhile and then, faster than a line drive, we do what we want.

If you are going to wager on spring training baseball, place yourself in the best possible situation to win by following these tips.

      Start cautiously

Be very limited the first week because managers will experiment a great deal, trying a few players in different positions and mixing veterans and potential rookies in the starting lineup for the first four or five innings. Always stay away from games with split squads, as nobody but the skipper and his staff know how the team will be divided.

      Find the right situations

Starting the second week of spring training, it is imperative to know the starting pitcher, as he will frequently start throwing all his pitches and work three to five innings depending on pitch counts. What bettors are seeking is a staff ace matched against a No. 5 starter. This does not guarantee success, but this shaky hurler might be more hittable under the pressure of trying to make the show.

“I have never bet preseason baseball since there are too many variables that can get in the way,” says Covers Expert Matt Fargo. “Yet, one advantage that bettors have in these exhibition games is information. Similar to NFL preseason games where coaches give out their player rotations and game plans, managers in baseball are very up front on how long starters will be pitching for and what sort of lineups they are going with.”

      Betting the better “team”

Bet on the more talented roster, taking into account the entire makeup of the team. It’s not a coincidence that the New York Mets finished 9-20 while Detroit went 20-8 last spring.

Ride hot teams and fade bad clubs

Because you are betting money lines, if any squad is winning game after game or losing in similar fashion, bet for or against the respective teams, since the outcome means nothing to the manager who is making certain his club is ready to start the season.

NASCAR betting: Budweiser Duel preview and picks
          By GREG ENGLE

There are very few things in life that are sure bets. And so it goes with NASCAR’s opening salvo in the 2013 Sprint Cup season, the Daytona 500.

No one can say who will take the checkered flag Sunday. In fact, at this point, just where the 43 drivers will start and exactly who those drivers will be are somewhat of a mystery.

Some of the mystery will be solved Thursday with the running of the Duels At Daytona. The annual qualifying races will set the field for Sunday’s big show. And while there is very little drama this year as to who will be racing Sunday, racers compete to win and that always makes for a great show.

The top 15 finishers in each Duel – not including Danica Patrick (won Daytona 500 pole) or Jeff Gordon (starting No. 2) – will fill spots No. 3-32 in the starting lineup. The top 15 from the first Duel will make up the inside row and the top 15 from the second Duel will fill the outside row.

Spots 33-36 will go to those drivers not already locked in who earned the top four speeds during last Sunday’s pole qualifying. Spots 37-42 will go to the top six cars in 2012 owner points that are not already locked in. The 43rd position goes to the most recent past champion. If there is no eligible past champion, it reverts back to 2012 owner points.

For Mike Bliss and Brian Keselowski, the Duel at Daytona is vital. Because of their owner points and qualifying results (speeds were 44th and 45th, respectively), the only way they can make the Daytona 500 is via their Duel races. Keselowski is in the first Duel while Bliss is in the second. Consider them wildcards. They have very little chance of winning but that doesn’t mean they won’t try to get near the front.

Patrick will lead the 23 starters in the first Duel. While she may try and maintain the lead, look for her to be guarded should she fall back. Patrick will want to simply survive the 150-mile race intact. If she wrecks her car and is forced to a backup, she will lose her pole position and be forced to start in the back.

The other unknown in both races will be the new Gen 6 car. With the exception of the few drivers who survived the Sprint Unlimited last Saturday night, no one has had any real drafting practice with the new cars. That alone could make for a couple of very wild races.

Among the favorites in the first race are Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick. Harvick won the Sprint Unlimited last Saturday. The first Duel should come down to Harvick, Johnson and Stewart. The win will probably be settled among them with the best shot going to Harvick. The spoiler could be Greg Biffle; he was second in the Unlimited and knows how to survive to be around at the end.

The second Duel will be led by Jeff Gordon who is not only a Daytona 500 winner but knows how to stay out in front at restrictor plate races. He has six wins at Daytona the most among active drivers. If Gordon’s Hendrick Motorsports Chevy has the same speed he had last Sunday look for him to stay at the front and possibly go all the way. Expect his teammate Kasey Kahne to give him a run for his money however. Kahne has never won here, but showed he had the speed last Sunday. Same with Kyle Busch; Busch does have a win here and was looking strong last Saturday night until he was caught up in an accident. The overall favorite of the second race though is Matt Kenseth. In his first outing in his new Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, last Saturday night, Kenseth staged a dominating performance but faded late. If he has that same magic Thursday and can maintain it for 60 laps, he could be the car to beat.

          Favorites

          First Duel

          Kevin Harvick

Duke Blue Devils at Virginia Tech Hokies (+13, 151)

Duke looks to rebound from a loss to Maryland when it visits Virginia Tech on Thursday. The No. 6 Blue Devils have lost three of their last 10 games and are a distant second in the Atlantic Coast Conference behind runaway leader Miami. The Blue Devils are playing back-to-back road games for just the second time all season. Virginia Tech has lost eight consecutive contests since defeating Wake Forest on Jan. 19.

The Hokies are experiencing a dismal season in James Johnson’s first season as coach. Virginia Tech is in last place in the 12-team conference. Duke’s loss to Maryland came in its fourth contest in 10 days and coach Mike Krzyzewski said afterwards that his squad was tired. “We’re playing on fumes and I think you could tell that,” Krzyzewski said. The Blue Devils had enough energy to force 26 turnovers but were dominated by a 40-20 margin on the boards. Coach K is tied with legendary Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp for the third-most wins (876) at one school.

                  TV:
                  9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT DUKE (22-3 SU, 9-3 ACC, 13-12-0 ATS):
Senior forward Mason Plumlee struggled against Maryland with a season-low four points and only three rebounds. It was the worst all-around game of the season for a player averaging 17.6 points and 10.4 rebounds. “There is so much pressure for Mason to play outstanding,” Krzyzewski said afterwards. “That wears on you as the season goes on.” Plumlee has 14 double-doubles this season and is 13 rebounds away from becoming the ninth player in Duke history to reach 1,000 career points and rebounds. Senior guard Seth Curry averages 16.9 points and has made a team-best 62 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Quinn Cook has four steals in each of the past two games and has a team-leading 44 to go with a 12.3 scoring average.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (11-14 SU, 2-10 ACC, 10-10-2 ATS): Freshman forward Marshall Wood had 14 points and 16 rebounds against North Carolina State for his first career double-double. Wood’s big outing raised his season averages to 4.7 points and 4.3 rebounds and repeating his stellar game against Duke would rate as a huge accomplishment. Senior guard Erick Green leads the nation with a 25.3 average and had 29 points and eight assists against the Wolfpack. Green is adept at getting to the free-throw line and is making 6.9 free throws per game. Junior forward Jarell Eddie averages 13 points.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Under is 7-1 in the last eight meetings.
                  * Blue Devils are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Virginia Tech.
                  * Road team is 8-3-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.

                  TIP-INS:

                  1. Duke is 40-8 against Virginia Tech and is 11-3 against the Hokies during Krzyzewski’s tenure.

                  2. Curry has 12 20-point outings this season, including four of the past six games.

                  3. Green has scored 20 or more points in 23 of Virginia Tech’s 25 games.

California Golden Bears at Oregon Ducks (-6, 132)

Oregon looks to end a 10-game losing streak to California on Thursday when the 23rd-ranked Ducks host the Bears in a key Pac-12 matchup. Oregon leads the conference by one game over Arizona and UCLA and holds a two-game lead over Arizona State and surging California. The Bears have won five of their last six games behind the play of junior guard Allen Crabbe, who was named Pac-12 player of week for the second time in a row.

After losing three straight, the Ducks have bounced back with three consecutive wins, including a 79-77 overtime victory over Washington State on Saturday. Center Tony Woods was ejected in the first half for throwing a deliberate elbow to the back of Brock Motum’s head, but he will be available against the Bears. The 6-11 senior had 14 points and eight rebounds in the Ducks’ 58-54 loss to California on Feb. 2.

                  TV:
                  9 p.m. ET, ESPNU.

                  ABOUT CALIFORNIA (16-9, 8-5 Pac-12, 9-13-1 ATS):
Crabbe averaged 19.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in wins over UCLA and USC, but most everyone is talking about his altercation with coach Mike Montgomery during the Bears’ 76-68 win over the Trojans. Crabbe briefly left the game in the second half after being shoved by Montgomery, but the 66-year-old coach has apparently avoided a suspension. The incident has overshadowed the Bears’ recent surge, which includes wins over Oregon and Arizona. Junior forward Richard Solomon has scored 31 points over his last two games, and guard Justin Cobbs is averaging 14.8 points while shooting 85.5 percent from the foul line.

Junior Johnathan Loyd has struggled to replace the talented freshman, but he had seven assists against Washington State. Senior forward E.J. Singler scored a season-high 24 points in the win, and he’s scored 20-plus points in two of his last three games. Forward Carlos Emory has averaged 15 points in the last two games, while Arsalan Kazemi ranks third in the Pac-12 with 9.6 rebounds per game. The Ducks lead the conference in rebounding margin at plus-7.8.

NBA TNT doubleheader: Heat at Bulls, Spurs at Clippers
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls (+2.5, 186.5)

The streaking Miami Heat sent a loud message to the rest of the league with a dominating road win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in their final game before the All-Star break. The Heat made another statement with a scintillating comeback in Atlanta on Wednesday night and will carry a season-high, eight-game winning streak into Thursday night's matchup at the Chicago Bulls. Miami blitzed the Hawks with 40 points in the fourth quarter to erase a 10-point deficit and notch their fifth straight win by double digits.

Chicago has played eight of its last nine away from home and will hit the road for two more games following Thursday's matchup. The Bulls rebounded from an ugly offensive performance in a 71-69 loss at Boston prior to the break with a solid effort in a 96-87 win at New Orleans on Tuesday night. While Derrick Rose continues to practice and make steady progress in his comeback from knee surgery, the return of point guard Kirk Hinrich gave Chicago its starting lineup intact for the first time in eight games.

                          TV:
                          8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE HEAT (37-14, 27-24-0 ATS):
Miami typically relies on LeBron James and running mates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, but the bench made the difference in Wednesday's win at Atlanta. Ray Allen and Shane Battier combined for 24 points and five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Heat shot a blistering 14 of 18 overall during the final 12 minutes. Battier was 5-of-8 from behind the arc to continue a torrid six-game stretch that has seen him connect on 60 percent (21 of 35) of his 3-point attempts. Allen is averaging 14 points in his last three games after failing to top seven points in his previous six outings.

ABOUT THE BULLS (31-22, 23-30-0 ATS):
Rose practiced 5-on-5 for the second time this week but coach Tom Thibodeau said there is no timetable for his star point guard's return. Hinrich handed out 10 assists in his return to the lineup and provided a smoother offensive flow. "He's a huge part of what we do, and it just feels good to have Kirk back," center Joakim Noah said. "What he brings to our team, it's hard to measure." Noah, who missed three games earlier this month while battling a foot injury, has registered three double-doubles in the last four games, including a 15-point, 17-rebound effort vs. New Orleans.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
                          * Under is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings in Chicago.
                          * Heat are 6-14-2 ATS in the last 22 meetings in Chicago.
                          * Heat are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings.

                          BUZZER BEATERS:

                          1. Chicago won at Miami 96-89 on Jan. 4 and has taken the last four home matchups with the Heat.

                          2. James had his franchise-record streak of 30-point games snapped at seven Wednesday night.

                          3. Heat F Mike Miller sat out Wednesday due to ear and sinus infections and backup C Chris Andersen sprained his foot in the game.

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers (-3, 200)

Fresh off his MVP performance in Sunday’s NBA All-Star game, Chris Paul will be trying to guide the Los Angeles Clippers to a fifth straight win when they host the Western Conference-leading San Antonio Spurs on Thursday. The Clippers have had a full week off since demolishing the Los Angeles Lakers and are hoping their momentum carries through the long break. The Spurs got back to their rodeo road trip on Tuesday and have won four straight.

San Antonio has won 15 of its last 16 games to ascend to the top of the West but has had a tough time against Los Angeles in two previous meetings. The Clippers handed the Spurs their worst loss of the season 106-84 in Los Angeles on Nov. 7 and suffered a rare home loss to the Clippers 92-87 only 12 days later. Los Angeles has looked dangerous since Paul returned to full health before the break and have won by an average of 16.3 points during their four-game winning streak.

                          TV:
                          10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE SPURS (43-12, 30-23-2 ATS):
San Antonio is 5-1 through the first six games of its nine-game road trip and has been at its best against the better teams on the trip in double-digit victories over the Chicago Bulls and Brooklyn Nets. The Spurs showed a tendency to play down to the level of competition on the rest of the stops, including a loss at Detroit, a one-point victory at Cleveland and a 108-102 victory in Sacramento on Tuesday. All-Star Tony Parker has become an even bigger part of the offense recently and is averaging 29 points and nine assists in his last five games. Parker has scored at least 20 points in 12 of his last 13 starts to help the Spurs cover over some nagging injuries to the likes of Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili. All three of San Antonio’s stars should be healthy and ready to go on Thursday.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (39-17, 31-25-0 ATS):
Paul collected 20 points and 15 assists in Sunday’s All-Star game and seemed to be in complete control of a Western Conference roster that also included Parker, Duncan, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant. The All-Star point guard’s return to full health after a knee injury has been the biggest reason for Los Angeles’ latest surge. Paul had 24 points and 13 assists in last Thursday’s 125-101 drubbing of the Lakers and has averaged 10.5 assists during the four-game winning streak. The Clippers have been one of the most talked-about teams in advance of Thursday’s trade deadline but reportedly are not looking to move backup point guard Eric Bledsoe or center DeAndre Jordan - the two pieces most coveted by potential trading partners.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Under is 19-4-1 in the last 24 meetings in Los Angeles.
                          * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                          * Spurs are 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings in Los Angeles.
                          * Spurs are 14-6 ATS in the last 20 meetings.

                          BUZZER BEATERS:

                          1. Parker has been held to a total of 15 points in the two losses to the Clippers this season.

                          2. Paul has averaged 19.3 points and 8.4 assists in 26 career games against San Antonio.

                          3. Los Angeles is 21-5 at home and has won its last three at Staples Center, including last week’s win as the road team against the Lakers.
