Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Indiana snapped an 0-17 skid at Michigan State, winning 72-68; their last win in East Lansing was in 1991.

-- Toronto Raptors won at Washington, their fifth win in row; trading for Rudy Gay has revitalized the Raptors.

-- Kid named Tristan Carey on Longwood has 71 points, 22 rebounds in his last two games; he's only 6-4. Pretty impressive.

-- Tremendous game in Brooklyn; Nets' Joe Johnson stuck a 3-pointer with
0:01.3 left to force OT, then stuck another jumper at the buzzer in OT as the Nets beat Milwaukee, 113-111. Teams play in Milwaukee tonight.

-- Saint Louis ran out to a 30-9 lead over VCU, beat the Rams 76-62. Billikens are an inspired team, playing for their late coach, Rick Majerus.

-- Miami Hurricanes got their notice of infractions from the NCAA, but no one is talking about what it says. On the court, Miami won another close games, scoring twice in last 0:10 to nip Virginia, 54-50.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

13) Kansas at Iowa State next Monday, ESPN’s first visit to Ames, IA for Big Monday in seven years. Hilton Coliseum seems like an awesome arena; this will be a good event.

Oddly, it will be Brent Musberger’s first-ever visit to Ames.

12) Big Ten Network ran interesting piece on Michigan State freshman Gary Harris, whose mother is one of Purdue’s all-time great basketball players, so much so that her jersey hangs from the rafters at Mackey Arena. Now that’s a bitter recruiting loss, when you can’t get a kid, when both of his parents went to your school.

11) Jerry Buss paid $67M for the Lakers-Kings-Forum in 1979. Lakers were valued at $16M back then; this season, three Lakers are earning $19M apiece!!! Lakers are now valued a $1B, that’s billion, with a B.

10) When you read that Derrick Rose went thru 5-on-5 workouts with the Bulls, it means he’s close to coming back, as long as his knee doesn’t have any setbacks. That’s good news for everyone except the Bulls’ opponents.

9) If you ran an NBA team, would you want Dwight Howard? Is he coachable? He makes $19M a year, and he can’t make half his foul shots. Is he a great teammate? Does he make his teammates better? For $19M a year, I want a damn superstar, but that’s just me.

8) Andrew Bynum hasn't played for the 76ers this year; he is hurt, but he hopes to play before the season ends. Why? He is a free agent after this season; hard to get paid if you haven't played.

7) My dad will be 87 Friday; he prefers the NBA to college ball, but he was glued to the Indiana-Michigan State game. It was that good a game.

6) Mets did the right thing and vetoed Johan Santana pitching in WBC; Santana will be 34 March 13; last thing he needs are high-stress innings in March. Make no mistake about, pitching for your country is an emotional thing and will be like mid-season games, or moreso.

5) This is the first time there were no arbitration hearings, which are no-lose propositions for the player.

4) On my 4.6 mile drive to work, I go through 30 stoplights; on way home, only 29. Thats a lot of stoplights in four miles.

3) Someone stole $50M in diamonds from an armed car in Belgium; now thats a bad day. How do you explain that to your boss?

2) Once upon a time, in the late 70’s, University of Detroit had a really good basketball team; their coach tried to recruit Earvin Johnson to play for the Titans, but Johnson went to Michigan State, evolved into Magic Johnson and the rest is history.

Whatever happened to that Detroit coach, the guy with the thick glasses and shrill voice? He went to the NBA but not for long, then drifted into a career in TV broadcasting. You may have heard of him.

How would the TV sports world be different now had Earvin Johnson gone to play for the Detroit Titans?

1) This has been a long, frustrating season handicapping games on this site, but stuff like that happens. Not an easy gig. We’re studying, grinding, trying to hit a hot streak to make the season a success.

Think its easy? With 6:06 left in the first half of a game a couple weeks ago, TCU led Kansas 12-3, and wound up beating the Jayhawks, 62-55. That’s the same TCU team that has one conference win all season- they were a 19-point home dog in that game, and Kansas scored three freakin’ points in the first 13:54.

We didn't have the Jayhawks in that game, but still, a 19-point favorite scoring three points in 13:54? Go figure.

Oscar odds: Betting the 85th Academy Awards

If you're the betting type - and if you aren't, what are you doing here? - this year's Oscar race could be one of the most lively in recent memory. A lot of the big races remain fairly wide open, even the top prize, which all but guarantees a few upsets. So let's get right to it:

BEST PICTURE

Lincoln +500 (-250 after nomination, -222 before nomination)
Les Miserables +6,600 (+500, +400)
Zero Dark Thirty +15,000 (+600, +500)

What Will Win: When Ben Affleck failed to land a best director nod for Argo (-666), it looked like the movie's chances at the big burrito were nil. But then Argo went on to win best picture at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Directors Guild Awards, and the Producers Guild Awards. That's hard to ignore. Still, don't count out the much-loved and much-nominated Silver Linings Playbook (+5,000), which has Oscar-whisperer Harvey Weinstein behind it.

What Should Win: For once, the most Oscar-baity movie in contention, Lincoln (+500), is also the best. Tony Kushner's screenplay is brilliant - exactly the kind of refined, literate material Oscar voters claim to want. In reality, of course, they prefer crowd-pleasers, which is why Lincoln was always doomed (Also a worthy choice: Zero Dark Thirty +15,000).

BEST DIRECTOR

Who Will Win: With Affleck out of the running, it's hard to know where this category is going. The obvious choice is Steven Spielberg (-400), but Oscar voters have always been a bit cool to him and many consider Lincoln to be Kushner and Daniel Day-Lewis's baby. Don't be surprised if David O. Russell (+2,000), Ang Lee (+450), or even Michael Haneke (+1,600) get called to the podium.

Who Should Win: Great directing shouldn't be synonymous with showy directing and Spielberg - one of the showiest directors alive - deserves props for playing it smooth and subtle this time around.

BEST ACTRESS

Jennifer Lawrence - Silver Linings Playbook -181 (-222 after nomination, -200 before nomination)
Jessica Chastain - Zero Dark Thirty +400 (+200, +185)
Emannuelle Riva - Amour +325 (+800, +1,600)

Who Will Win: This one's a real tough call, with both Jennifer Lawrence of Silver Linings Playbook (-181) and Jessica Chastain of Zero Dark Thirty (+400) running neck-and-neck. On the one hand, Chastain has a lot more screen time, but on the other, Lawrence has the more likeable character. We give Lawrence the edge.

Who Should Win: Frankly, we'd be fine with any of the nominees, except for that Quvenzhané Wallis kid from Beasts of the Southern Wild (+6,600). She was freakin' six years old. She could barely go poopy by herself.

BEST ACTOR

Daniel Day Lewis - Lincoln -5,000 (-1,000 after nomination, -625 before nomination)
Hugh Jackman - Les Miserables +1,200 (+700, +700)
Denzel Washington - Flight +8,000 (+1,400, +1,000)
Joaquin Phoenix - The Master + 6,600 (+1,600, +1,600)
Bradley Cooper - Silver Linings Playbook +8,000 (+2,800, +2,500)

Who Will Win: One of the safer bets of the evening, this is Daniel Day-Lewis's (-5,000) prize to lose. He won most of the precursor awards and everybody in Hollywood pretty much reveres the guy. One caveat: if the similarly admired Joaquin Phoenix (+6,600) splits the serious-thespian vote, Bradley Cooper (+8,000) could swoop in from behind.

Who Should Win: Day-Lewis, who is so great as Lincoln you feel no one else need ever play the role again.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Anne Hathaway - Les Miserables -5,000

Amy Adams - The Master +2,800

Who Will Win: This is the other safe bet of the evening. Anne Hathaway's (-5,000) unbearable over-emoting in Les Misérables has impressed a lot of people, even those who thought Les Miz stank up the screen. Plus, that one-take rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" is a ready-made Oscar clip.

Who Should Win: Her role in Silver Linings Playbook was tiny, but Jackie Weaver (+10,000) really made you want her crabby snax and homemades.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Tommy Lee Jones - Lincoln +125
Christopher Waltz - Django Unchained +150
Phillip Seymour Hoffman - The Master +800
Robert De Niro - Silver Linings Playbook +700

Who Will Win: This is, hands down, the most confounding category of the night. Literally any of the five nominees could take it. Our guess is it'll come down to Lincoln's Tommy Lee Jones (+125), Argo's Alan Arkin (+5,000), or Silver Linings Playbook's Robert De Niro (+700), with a slight edge to De Niro as the sentimental favorite.

Who Should Win: Again, we'd be happy to see any of these guys win, but Philip Seymour Hoffman (+800) worked his butt off in The Master - he's practically the lead -and giving him the award would be a nice way of recognizing writer-director P.T. Anderson's risky but imperfect film.

DePaul Blue Demons at Georgetown Hoyas (-15, 135)

It wasn’t long ago that No. 11 Georgetown was an unranked team that began Big East play with a 2-3 record. However, the Hoyas will put the conference’s longest winning streak on the line on Wednesday when they host DePaul. On Jan. 19, Georgetown provided South Florida with its only league win, but since that setback, the Hoyas have trumped three top-25 opponents and won seven straight overall.

The win streak has allowed Georgetown to move from the bottom half of the conference and into a three-way tie for first with Marquette and Syracuse, the latter of which it will meet Saturday. In the meantime, the Hoyas stand a good chance at remaining atop the Big East with a home game against the Blue Demons. DePaul snapped a nine-game slide with Saturday’s victory over Rutgers, but has lost 11 straight against Georgetown.

Providence Friars at Syracuse Orange (-12.5, 130)

Providence has suddenly put itself in major contention for a postseason bid after a four-game win streak, its longest in Big East play since 2004. The healthier Friars attempt to beat their third ranked team of the month when they travel to Syracuse on Wednesday. Providence was without guards Vincent Council and Kris Dunn for 10 and nine games, respectively, with injuries and leading scorer Bryce Cotton missed two close Friars’ losses. Providence must continue its strong play on the defensive end to win at the Carrier Dome for the first time since 1999.

Eighth-ranked Syracuse is only 3-3 its last six games, but is 15-0 at the Dome this season – 5-0 in league play. The contest will start a critical three-game stretch for the Orange, who host Georgetown on Saturday and play at Marquette on Monday. Syracuse won at Providence 72-66 on Jan. 9.

Minnesota Golden Gophers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-6, 121)

Both Minnesota and Ohio State have 18 victories this season, but neither is playing well entering Wednesday’s matchup at Columbus. The visiting Golden Gophers are far removed from a 15-1 start, losing seven of their past 10 and falling into a three-way tie for sixth in the Big Ten standings. Minnesota is last in conference games in defending the 3-point shot, which could prove problematic against the Buckeyes.

Ohio State is third in the conference in 3-point shooting (36.5 percent), and junior Lenzelle Smith Jr. (39.1 percent) and Deshaun Thomas (38.5 percent) rank in the top 12 in the Big Ten in shooting from beyond the arc. Ohio State is fifth in the conference standings, three games out of first.

Wisconsin Badgers at Northwestern Wildcats (+7, 112)

No. 17 Wisconsin will be fighting to keep its Big Ten title hopes alive when it travels to slumping Northwestern on Wednesday night. The Badgers are two games behind conference co-leaders No. 1 Indiana and No. 5 Michigan State, but are flying high after a routine 71-49 win over No. 18 Ohio State.

The Wildcats enter on a three-game losing streak, having posted a season-low 41 points against in-state rival Illinois on their home floor on Sunday. Its the longest skid of the season for Northwestern, and even a matchup against a Badger squad that's been less than adequate on the road would seem a tough place to stop it. Wisconsin hasn't lost to the Wildcats since Jan. 7, 2009, in Evanston.

Kansas Jayhawks at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-1.5, 138)

Oklahoma State puts its seven-game win streak on the line Wednesday against No. 9 Kansas in a critical Big 12 contest, with both teams trailing first-place Kansas State by a half-game. The 14th-ranked Cowboys are trending upward behind the play of freshman point guard Marcus Smart, who scored a career-high 28 points in an 84-79 overtime win over Oklahoma on Saturday.

Kansas bounced back after suffering its first three-game losing streak since 2005 with dominating wins over Kansas State and Texas last week. Oklahoma State ended Kansas’ 33-game home win streak with an 85-80 victory Feb. 2, but the Jayhawks have defeated the Cowboys in five of the last seven games. Kansas freshman guard Ben McLemore, who leads the Big 12 in scoring in conference play at 17.8 points per game, had 23 points against the Cowboys in the first matchup.

Houston Cougars at Memphis Tigers (-19, 158)

Memphis staved off a second-half rally from Marshall last time out to win its 16th straight game, the second longest streak in the nation. The 19th-ranked Tigers host Houston Wednesday in a Conference USA game needing two more wins to clinch their second-straight conference title. Memphis has try to avoid looking past the Cougars with Southern Mississippi, its lone threat in the conference, on deck.

Houston is coming off a heart-breaking loss to Tulsa in triple overtime. The Cougars scored five points in the final five seconds of regulation to force the extra sessions but ran out of gas in the final period. TaShawn Thomas was named the conference's Player of the Week averaging 27.5 points and 13 rebounds over a pair of games last week.

Colorado State Rams at UNLV Runnin' Rebels (-3, 138)

Colorado State has a clear route to sole possession of first place in the Mountain West. It will be far from easy though. To reach a showdown for the top spot in the league on Saturday with New Mexico, the 21st-ranked Rams must first end UNLV’s 13-game home winning streak on Wednesday night. Colorado State has won six straight contests since losing at New Mexico on Jan.23. That came one game after beating UNLV 66-61 at home. The Rams have five players averaging at least 9.9 points and led the nation in rebounding through Monday.

UNLV has lost three of its last five games, but the two victories were against No. 16 New Mexico and talented San Diego State at home where the Runnin’ Rebels are 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the league. UNLV, led by freshman Anthony Bennett, could use another key victory to seal an NCAA bid.

Washington Huskies at Arizona Wildcats (-12, 137)

A Pac-12 championship is still within reach for No. 12 Arizona heading into its game Wednesday night against visiting Washington. The Wildcats ended a two-game losing streak with a win Sunday against Utah, leaving them a game behind first-place Oregon with five remaining. Washington ended a three-game losing streak with Saturday’s victory against Oregon State. The Huskies, the defending conference champions, were picked to finish fifth in the Pac-12 but are tied for eighth with Stanford.

Washington has one of the premier scorers in the Pac-12 in junior guard C.J. Wilcox but he was stymied by Nick Johnson when these teams met Jan. 31, scoring 11 points on 4-for-16 shooting in the 57-53 win by the visiting Wildcats. That was part of an overall decline by Wilcox, in which he shot 34.9 percent from the floor during an eight-game stretch that resulted in seven losses. He regained his touch against Oregon State, shooting 7-for-14 and scoring 24 points.

Santa Clara Broncos at Gonzaga Bulldogs (-15, 142)

No. 3 Gonzaga appeared to have cleared the last major hurdle on the way to an undefeated season in the West Coast Conference when it eased past Saint Mary's to cap a sweep against its biggest conference rival. The Zags host dangerous Santa Clara needing one more win to match the most its ever had in regular-season play. Kelly Olynyk continues to state his claim for national Player of the Year winning the conference's weekly honor for the second time last week.

Rising Santa Clara looks to end the Zags' eight-game winning streak in the one-sided series. Gonzaga has won 26 of the last 27 meetings. Santa Clara coach Kerry Keating has beaten Gonzaga just once, that coming in 2011. The Broncos beat Pepperdine last game 70-60 as senior Raymond Cowels III scored the 1,000th point in his career.

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers (-7.5, 196.5)

The Los Angeles Lakers play their first game since the death of longtime owner Jerry Buss on Wednesday when they host the Boston Celtics, who lost 97-90 in Denver on Tuesday. The Lakers are hoping for a fresh start after the All-Star break, but they’re still 3 1/2 games behind the Houston Rockets for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They’ll need to go 16-12 over their final 28 games just to reach .500.

Boston, which is 8-2 since losing point guard Rajon Rondo with a season-ending knee injury, played well in the first three quarters against Denver before fading in the final minutes. Leading scorer Paul Pierce was held to 10 points on 2-of-14 shooting, but he had 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the Celtics’ convincing 116-95 win over the Lakers at TD Garden on Feb. 7. Boston has struggled on the road with an 8-16 record.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (28-25, 22-28-3 ATS): Boston began its five-game road trip with too many mistakes down the stretch against the Nuggets, but there were a number of bright spots. Forward Jeff Green scored a season-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while guard Avery Bradley chipped in 17 points. Pierce and Kevin Garnett continue to be mentioned in talks with Thursday’s trade deadline fast approaching, but president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has said it’s unlikely the Celtics will move either player. Garnett, averaging 15.1 points and 7.7 rebounds, has indicated that he would not waive his no-trade clause.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (25-29, 21-32-1 ATS): If Los Angeles is going to make a playoff push, it needs to start against the Celtics. NASCAR betting: Budweiser Duel preview and picks

There are very few things in life that are sure bets. And so it goes with NASCAR’s opening salvo in the 2013 Sprint Cup season, the Daytona 500.

No one can say who will take the checkered flag Sunday. In fact, at this point, just where the 43 drivers will start and exactly who those drivers will be are somewhat of a mystery.

Some of the mystery will be solved Thursday with the running of the Duels At Daytona. The annual qualifying races will set the field for Sunday’s big show. And while there is very little drama this year as to who will be racing Sunday, racers compete to win and that always makes for a great show.

The top 15 finishers in each Duel – not including Danica Patrick (won Daytona 500 pole) or Jeff Gordon (starting No. 2) – will fill spots No. 3-32 in the starting lineup. The top 15 from the first Duel will make up the inside row and the top 15 from the second Duel will fill the outside row.

Spots 33-36 will go to those drivers not already locked in who earned the top four speeds during last Sunday’s pole qualifying. Spots 37-42 will go to the top six cars in 2012 owner points that are not already locked in. The 43rd position goes to the most recent past champion. If there is no eligible past champion, it reverts back to 2012 owner points.

For Mike Bliss and Brian Keselowski, the Duel at Daytona is vital. Because of their owner points and qualifying results (speeds were 44th and 45th, respectively), the only way they can make the Daytona 500 is via their Duel races. Keselowski is in the first Duel while Bliss is in the second. Consider them wildcards. They have very little chance of winning but that doesn’t mean they won’t try to get near the front.

Patrick will lead the 23 starters in the first Duel. While she may try and maintain the lead, look for her to be guarded should she fall back. Patrick will want to simply survive the 150-mile race intact. If she wrecks her car and is forced to a backup, she will lose her pole position and be forced to start in the back.

The other unknown in both races will be the new Gen 6 car. With the exception of the few drivers who survived the Sprint Unlimited last Saturday night, no one has had any real drafting practice with the new cars. That alone could make for a couple of very wild races.

Among the favorites in the first race are Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick. Harvick won the Sprint Unlimited last Saturday. The first Duel should come down to Harvick, Johnson and Stewart. The win will probably be settled among them with the best shot going to Harvick. The spoiler could be Greg Biffle; he was second in the Unlimited and knows how to survive to be around at the end.

The second Duel will be led by Jeff Gordon who is not only a Daytona 500 winner but knows how to stay out in front at restrictor plate races. He has six wins at Daytona the most among active drivers. If Gordon’s Hendrick Motorsports Chevy has the same speed he had last Sunday look for him to stay at the front and possibly go all the way. Expect his teammate Kasey Kahne to give him a run for his money however. Kahne has never won here, but showed he had the speed last Sunday. Same with Kyle Busch; Busch does have a win here and was looking strong last Saturday night until he was caught up in an accident. The overall favorite of the second race though is Matt Kenseth. In his first outing in his new Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, last Saturday night, Kenseth staged a dominating performance but faded late. If he has that same magic Thursday and can maintain it for 60 laps, he could be the car to beat.
