    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six quick thoughts late on a Saturday night........

-- No one is going to feel sorry for Kentucky as they get beaten up on for the rest of this season; without the Noel kid, they're in serious trouble.

-- I'm not sure why Maryland left the ACC for the Big Dozen; seriously, not like the ACC is going to fold or anything.

-- CBS wouldn't have left its coverage of the LA Open at 6pm Saturday if Eldrick Woods was in the field.

-- I'd much rather watch a NASCAR race than the Slam Dunk contest.

-- Oregon State would be firing Craig Robinson next month, if he wasn't the President's brother-in-law; that buys him at least one more year.

-- If I had a vote for baseball's Hall of Fame, I'd vote for Jose Canseco to get in before I voted for Mark McGwire, but I wouldn't vote for either one of them. Just a reminder though; Canseco was the much better player.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

    13) This has to be some kind of a record: Temple's underachieving Owls have played five games in a row decided by a single point (3-2).

According to Stats LLC, its the longest-such streak since at least 1997.

    12) Maryland upset Duke despite some of the worst guard play I've seen in a major college game; Terps had 26 turnovers and still won. According to the great website kenpom.com, it was a 78 possession game, meaning that Terps turned ball over on 26 of 78 possessions, and scored 83 points on the other 52 possessions, or 1.596 points per possession. Wow.

    11) Game of the day was in Tulsa, where Golden Hurricane beat Houston 101-92 in triple OT. Teams combined to go 13-53 from the arc, and took 85 foul shots- if you had the Cougars +4.5, you didn't enjoy the ending.

    10) Washington State hit a game-tying 3-pointer in last 0:10 to tie Oregon, then they fouled the Ducks on purpose with 0:04 left, because their player didn't know the game was tied. Sixth straight loss resulted for Wazzu, as calls for coach Ken Bone's head are growing louder on the Palouse.

    9) Ivy League doesn't have a conference tournament, so Harvard's 69-57 win over Princeton is bigger than it would be in other leagues, since it gives them a one-game lead for the automatic bid to the NCAAs, which goes to the regular season champ.

    8) St Joe's-LaSalle are both in Philly, both in Atlantic 16, but they only play once a year; what genius made up this schedule? How does it make any sense for two teams in same city/league to not play twice a year?

    7) Why does referee Jim Burr work a TV game every Saturday at noon? I'm told refs get paid more for TV games, but Mr Burr, who is from Albany area and has been a terrific official for years and years, always has a TV game in the first block of Saturday games. Was just wondering why.

    6) Rough stretch for Iona's Gaels, who've lost four of their last five games, with three of the losses coming in overtime (the other loss was to Canisius by 3). Marist beat them after they tied the game with a 65-footer at the end of an overtime period.

    5) Tennessee 88, Kentucky 58-- Going to be a long month for fans of the Wildcats, who have been beating up on SEC rivals for decades. Teams will be attacking the basket now that Noel isn't around to block shots, and no one is going to feel sorry for the Wildcats, who won the national title last year.

    4) Going back to Temple's streak of one-point games, I'm totally convinced, without any hard evidence, that college basketball has had a lot more close games than usual this season. I look at Iowa; 7 of their 12 conference games have been decided by 4 or less points. Very strange season.

    3) Brandt Snedeker/Phil Mickelson are both out of World Match Play tournament next week; Shane Lowry/Fredrik Jacobson take their places, and get to oppose Rory McIlroy/Eldrick Woods for their troubles.

Not fond of Mickelson saying he is opting not to play because his son is on vacation from school next week; pretty sure he could bring the kid with him, and they'd have a great time. Its a big event; Mickelson should be there.

    2) Odd fact they said on CBS Saturday: Last time a guy won the LA Open in his first time playing the tournament was Pat Fitzsimons, in 1975.

    1) Marlins' owner Jeffrey Loria must be a real gem; he told Jose Reyes' agent that Reyes should buy a home in Miami, two days before the Marlins dealt Reyes to Toronto. Wonder if Showtime wants to do another reality series with the Miami team this spring-- I'm guessing not.

NBA All-Star Game: What bettors need to know

      Eastern Conference All-Stars at Western Conference All-Stars (-3, 291)

The best basketball players in the world will gather Sunday for the 62nd annual NBA All-Star Game at the Toyota Center in Houston.

This year’s event will feature seven first-time All-Stars, the most since 2005. It’s the third time Houston will host the event. The last time was in 2006 when the East toppled the West, 122-120, earning LeBron James his first All-Star Game MVP.

      TV: 8:00 p.m. ET, TNT

      ABOUT THE EAST:
Chris Bosh will start in the All-Star game in place of injured Boston PG Rajon Rondo, giving the NBA champion Miami Heat three starters for the Eastern Conference. Bosh says he was told Friday by Miami coach Erik Spoelstra, who will lead the East, that he had earned the starting nod. Dwyane Wade, who will be the only guard starting for the East, and LeBron James complete the trio of Heat starters. Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony will also be in the starting lineup despite suffering a deep right arm contusion against the Raptors Wednesday. The Celtics’ Kevin Garnett rounds out the starting cast for the East.

      ABOUT THE WEST:
The Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant (1,591,437) edged the Miami’s LeBron James (1,583,646) as this year's leading vote-getter in All-Star Balloting, earning his record 15th consecutive All-Star nod. Bryant breaks a tie with Jerry West, Karl Malone and Shaquille O'Neal for the most consecutive NBA All-Star selections.Bryant's partner at the guard position in the Western Conference starting lineup is the Clippers' Chris Paul. The West's starting frontcourt features the Thunder's Kevin Durant, the Lakers' Dwight Howard, and the Clippers' Blake Griffin. San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich will coach the West for the third time in his career.

      TRENDS:

      * The West has won three of the last four meetings straight up and covered in four of the last six (4-1-1 ATS) All-Star Games.

      * The East holds a 37-24 all-time SU advantage in the event.

*The over is also an impressive 5-0-1 in the last six glorified track meets. Teams have combined to score an average of 280.6 points during that span and have played over the number by an average of 14.3 points.

      * The 291-point total is 7.5 points higher than last year's All-Star Game total of 283.5. The 2011-12 All-Star clash (West 152, East 149) was the highest-scoring regulation time finish in the 61-year history of the event.

NBA betting review: Best and worst wagers at the break

With the NBA on the four-day hiatus in Houston, now seems like a great time to review the best and worst in NBA betting from the first half of the season.

          Best ATS

          Overall:
Washington Wizards (31-18-2 ATS) – At 15-36 SU, the Wizards have played well enough to meet the oddmakers’ expectations and losing games by an average of just under four points a night.

          Home:
Denver Nuggets (17-8 ATS) – There is something to be said for the thin air at the Pepsi Center. Denver covered in four straight and six of its last seven at home before the break.

          Road:
New Orleans Hornets (19-10 ATS) – The soon-to-be Pelicans are a different team on the road, scoring an average of 96.6 points as visitors compared to a league-low 91 point per home game.

          Worst ATS

          Overall:
Charlotte Bobcats (19-32-1 ATS) – The Bobcats are still at the bottom, losing games by an average of almost nine points. Combined with last season, Charlotte is 42-75-1 ATS in its last 118 games.

          Home:
Chicago Bulls (7-20 ATS) – Chicago has gone 15-12 SU inside the United Center but is averaging just under 92 points a night at home – second lowest home average in the league. No rush Derrick Rose.

          Away:
Boston Celtics (7-15-1 ATS) – The Celtics have stunk it up on the road, going just 8-15 SU including an embarrassing road loss at Charlotte Monday. Boston’s backcourt is getting dangerously thin.

          Best over

          Overall:
Golden State Warriors (33-18-1 over/under) – The Warriors were one of the first-half surprises, thanks in part to their potent offense. Golden State can top the total in a hurry with a league-best 39.3 percent 3-point shooting.

          Home:
Dallas Mavericks (17-7-1 over/under) – The Mavs went into the break going 3-1 over/under for a four-game home stand and play three of four at home after the break.

          Away:
Golden State Warriors (19-10-0 over/under) – The Warriors defense – or lack thereof – has a much to do with these over paydays. Golden State is giving up 101.2 points per game on the year.

          Best under

          Overall:
Indiana Pacers (21-31-1 over/under) – The Pacers finished under in both games before the break but looked to be pulling a 180 with a stretch of six overs in eight days, thanks to a brief uptick in offense.

          Home:
Phoenix Suns (7-18 over/under) – It seems bettors still think the Suns are a good over play, moving those home totals up just enough for the under to come crashing through.

          Away:
Washington Wizards (6-20-0 over/under) – Washington’s offense has a tough time getting off in opposing gyms, scoring just 86.8 points per road game compared to 96 points per home game.

MLB betting: Evaluating 2013 player props

The Atlantis Casino in Reno, Nevada is the first bookmaker to release MLB player props and season win totals.

Let’s take a look at four enticing player props available to bettors for the 2013 season:

            Jose Reyes runs scored

            Over/under 100.5 runs scored

No team made a bigger splash this offseason than the Toronto Blue Jays. Reyes was a key part of the November deal with the Marlins and the four-time All-Star could put up huge numbers for the Jays in 2013. Reyes is the prototypical lead-off man because of his lightning speed and career .291 batting average. Keep in mind heavy hitters Melky Cabrera, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion will be batting behind him and that could mean a ton of runs scored for Reyes. The Mets’ all-time leader in triples and stolen bases racked up 101 runs in 126 games for New York in 2011 and 86 in 160 games for lowly Miami last season. The 29-year-old has something to prove this year and is now playing for a legit contender.

            Jered Weaver wins

            Over/under 17 wins

Weaver has been a beast for the Angels the past two seasons and he should receive even more run support this year with the signing of heavy-hitting OF Josh Hamilton. Weaver posted an MLB-best 20 wins last campaign and 18 in 2011. The hard-throwing righty racked up 15 wins by August 6 and has to be considered one of the favorites for the AL Cy Young Award heading into the 2013 season.

            Michael Bourn stolen bases

            Over/under 45.5

The ink is barely dry on Michael Bourn’s new four-year, $48 million deal with the Indians and heavy expectations are being placed on the speed demon in 2013. Bourn has spent his entire seven-year career in the National League, half of that playing for some bad Houston teams. The 30-year-old’s career average is 51 stolen bases every 162 games. In the five-year span from 2008 to 2012, Bourn averaged 51 stolen bases per year and led the NL in that category in three of the five years. The Indians have a lot of hitters (Jason Kipnis, Carlos Santana, and Asdrubal Cabrera) who tend to strike out quite often, so expect the Tribe to use their speed to manufacture the majority of their runs this season.

            Adrian Gonzalez RBIs

            Over/under 107.5

This number seems a little high for Gonzalez. The 30-year-old has only exceeded this total twice in his career (2008, 2011) and only drove in 22 runs in 36 games after he was dealt to the Dodgers last season. The left-handed hitting Gonzalez averaged 100.2 RBIs per season during his five-year stint in the NL with the Padres and no longer has the advantage of the short porch in right at Fenway Park. Not to mention Gonzalez is projected to hit fourth in the Dodgers’ lineup behind slugger Matt Kemp, who could hog the majority of RBI opportunities.

Study group: Sunday’s Top 25 NCB betting notes
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Penn State at (5) Michigan (-23.5)

Losers of three of four, the Michigan Wolverines have an excellent opportunity to right the ship when they host last-place Penn State. The Nittany Lions came close to their first conference win Thursday, falling 74-72 to Iowa. Penn State has lost 14 consecutive road games in the Big Ten but at the very least, it might be getting closer, as three of the Lions' last four games have been decided by single digits. The Wolverines are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.

                  (14) Ohio State at (19) Wisconsin (-2)

When Ohio State and Wisconsin played on Jan. 29, the Buckeyes used a second-half tear to pull out a win. But Sunday's rematch in Madison features a much-improved Badger squad that has gone 3-1 since that defeat, including a win over then-No. 3 Michigan. Both these teams, as well as Michigan, are two games behind Big Ten co-leaders Indiana and Michigan State. The loser of this game will have its conference championship hopes essentially dissolved, while the winner lives to see another day. The Badgers have won nine of their last 10 at home against the Buckeyes, with the lone Ohio State victory since 2000 coming last season.

                  (12) Louisville at South Florida (+13)

Louisville recovered from its epic 104-101 five-overtime loss at Notre Dame last weekend, defeating St. John’s 72-58 at home. The Cardinals are back on the road on Sunday, visiting the South Florida Bulls, who haven’t won in seven games. Louisville has outscored its opponents 975-767 in the second half this season and is holding foes to 39.6% scoring from the field. The Cardinals are 8-0 ATS in the last eight meetings.

                  (9) Arizona at Utah (+9)

When Arizona defeated Utah in early January, the Wildcats were in the midst of a run where just about everything was going their way, especially late in games. Arizona hopes to recapture some of the same magic to avoid its first three-game losing streak in nearly three years when they visit the Utes. Arizona improved to 14-0 with its Jan. 5 victory over Utah, capping a three-game stretch in which it won each game in the final seconds or overtime. The Wildcats are 6-4 since that contest and have dropped two straight following a four-game winning streak. Utah is 2-2 over its last four after losing seven of eight to begin conference play. The Utes have won both of their home games in February and are coming off a 60-55 victory over Arizona State. The road team is 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings.

                  (4) Miami-Florida at Clemson (+7)

Miami was unranked as recently as four weeks ago, but turned heads with a 27-point victory over then-No. 1 Duke on Jan. 23. Historically, the Hurricanes have struggled at Clemson, owning a 1-5 all-time record, but Miami has had no problems playing on the road this season. They’ve won nine straight away from home, which is tied for the second-most road wins in the nation heading into the weekend. Clemson is coming off a 56-53 win Thursday against Georgia Tech but the Tigers are 0-4 against ranked teams this season. The Hurricanes are 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings.

Kings at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks (-128, 5)

The Chicago Blackhawks opened their season with a 5-2 victory at Los Angeles. On Sunday, the Blackhawks host the Kings sporting the best record in the NHL. Chicago is the only team without a regulation loss this season, and not even an upper-body injury to starting goaltender Corey Crawford could cool its hot start. Ray Emery made 27 saves in a 4-1 win over San Jose on Friday. Emery is 4-0-0 this season and will likely start until Crawford is ready to return.

Los Angeles has won two straight since benching starting goaltender Jonathan Quick, who has not played close to his Vezina-nominated form from last season with a .891 save percentage in 10 starts. Jonathan Bernier has held opponents to one goal in each of his two starts this week as the Kings won back-to-back games in regulation for the first time this season. Los Angeles was 1-for-5 on the power play in both wins and is 3-1-1 when scoring with the man advantage.

                      TV:
                      3:30 p.m. ET, NBC, TSN 2

                      ABOUT THE KINGS (5-5-2):
Anze Kopitar leads the team with eight points and is on a three-game scoring streak. Jeff Carter has a team-leading six goals, while Justin Williams has one goal on a team-leading 44 shots. Defenseman Drew Doughty is a team-worst minus-9 but leads the team with 16 blocked shots. Defenseman Slava Voynov has five points in six games this month. Kyle Clifford has seven points to go with his team-leading 42 hits.

                      ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (11-0-3):
Patrick Kane leads Chicago with nine goals and 21 points and has been held off the scoresheet just once this season. Kane has seven goals and 12 points on an eight-game scoring streak. Captain Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa each have six goals thus far. The Blackhawks have the second-best penalty-killing in the league, allowing only four goals on 51 opportunities for 92.2% effectiveness.

                      TRENDS:

                      * The under is 7-0 in Blackhawks’ last seven home games.
                      * Under is 2-0-2 in Kings’ last four overall.
                      * Blackhawks are 6-1 in their last seven vs. Pacific foes.
                      * Road team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.

                      OVERTIME:

                      1. The Kings won both visits to Chicago last season after going winless in six trips over the previous three seasons.

                      2. The Blackhawks tied the 1943-44 Canadiens for the third-longest point streak to open the season at 14 games. Only the 1984-85 Oilers (15) and 2006-07 Ducks (16) have had better starts.

                      3. Toews has four goals and three assists in his last five games against Los Angeles.
