    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Some notes on Notre Dame's 104-101 win over Louisville, in five OT's

-- Louisville led 56-48 (56-48!!!!) with 0:50 left, then Jerian Grant went bonkers, scoring 12 points in 0:23 (12 points in 0:23!!!!) to tie the game.

-- Garrick Sherman scored 17 points in 22 minutes for Notre Dame; in his previous eight games, Sherman played a total of 29 minutes. He never got into this game until the first overtime, yet he scored 17 points.

-- How does Peyton Siva play 41 minutes and score two points?

-- Russ Smith was 13-16 on foul line, but 4-19 from floor, 0-6 from arc, and looked very untrustworthy to make a sound decision in crunch time.

-- 16 ties, 26 lead changes. Last five-OT game was Baylor-Texas A&M in College Station five years ago (Bears won 116-110).

-- One of the refs couldn't make it to South Bend because of weather, so ref John Gaffney was summoned from Milwaukee, where he worked DePaul-Marquette earlier in day. Gaffney reffed for 105 minutes Saturday.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday....

As I type this, it is 2 below zero here in upstate New York. If anyone has a condo in Las Vegas they want to sell me, I'm all ears. Cold ears, but listening.

    13) Notre Dame 104, Louisville 101, in five OT's-- Will be hard to top this as the best game of the season. Was a lousy game for 39 minutes, then all hell broke loose. Check the box up above for some notes on this game.

    12) Wisconsin 65, Michigan 62, OT-- Kid on Badgers stuck a 40-footer at the buzzer to force OT, when Wolverines had fouls to give but didn't foul. Hard to believe this wasn't the most exciting game of the day. It wasn't.

    11) Tweet of the Day, from Oakland Grizzlies' coach Greg Kampe:

"Shhhhh. Be vewy vewy quiet. I'm hunting Jackwabbits."

You see, Kampe's team hosted South Dakota State's Jackrabbits Saturday, so in his best Elmer Fudd voice, Kampe sent his team on the floor and pulled the upset, 88-83. Oakland "held" Nate Wolters to 36 (he had 53 Thursday).

    10) Illinois State 75, Creighton 72-- Top of the MVC is taking some lumps from middle of the league, which won't help come Selection Sunday.

    9) Miami 87, North Carolina 61-- Not only did the Hurricanes crush the Tar Heels, they clowned them too, throwing alley-oops off the backboard for breakaway dunks. That will be remembered down the road in Chapel Hill.

    8) UNLV 64, New Mexico 55-- Rebels desperately needed this win, and so did North Carolina, since Rebels are their best non-conference win. UNLV is still trying to find lineup combos that work; all of them would work better if they had a dynamic point guard on the squad. Not even close.

    7) Memphis 89, Southern Miss 76-- Josh Pastner takes a lot of grief since he isn't named Calipari, but his Tigers are unbeaten in C-USA. This was a solid win over a Golden Eagle squad that pressures ball really well, and had not lost a conference home game.

    6) Oklahoma 72, Kansas 66-- Jayhawks have lost three games in row for first time in eight years; listening to Bill Self after the game, he could accept losing to the Sooners, but was still annoyed about the TCU game. .

    5) Texas gets PG Myck Kabongo back for its next game, but they're 10-13, 2-8 in conference play, doubtful he can help them enough to make NCAAs, unless they somehow won the conference tournament. Hopefully he'll do the right thing and play for Texas next year, to improve his NBA stock.

    4) Temple 72, Dayton 71-- Dr Naismith spun around in his grave watching end of this game; in the last 0:03, there were three turnovers and 0-5 shooting from the foul line. In three freakin' seconds. There was also a decent amount of horrific officiating. Neither team deserved to win, and the refs didn't really deserve to get paid. Just ask Archie Miller.

    3) Northeastern 79, Old Dominion 74, OT-- Monarchs were 2-20, they fired the coach, then they upset Drexel and took first place Huskies to OT, so I'm guessing there is an interesting story behind the firing.

    2) Georgia 52, Texas A&M 46-- We generally root for bald coaches who wear glasses, so good to see Mark Fox win his fifth straight game, against an Aggie team playing on short rest after beating Missouri Thursday.

    1) I mentioned this a couple weeks ago, it is still true; there is one thing preventing Miami from being ranked #1, not that it matters much- their uniforms aren't blue, and they don't say "DUKE" on the front. Next month there is a tournament, so the polls will be forgotten soon, thank God.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Study group: Sunday’s Top 25 NCB betting notes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Hoosiers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-1.5, 138)

Indiana became the latest top-ranked team to taste defeat the week after they ascended to the No.1 spot. Although an extended stay is highly unlikely, the top-ranked Hoosiers can make their case to remain in that spot with a win Sunday at No. 10 Ohio State. Over the last four weeks, Louisville, Duke, Kansas and Indiana have taken one-week turns as the top-ranked team in the coaches’ poll, only to be dismissed the following week.

Four of the top five teams in the most recent poll suffered at least one loss in the past week while No. 4 Duke isn’t even leading its own conference, placing voters in a bind. The Hoosiers likely lost their grip of the top spot with Thursday’s surprising loss at Illinois, but might be able to make up for it against the Buckeyes, who saw their four-game winning streak snapped Wednesday in an overtime loss at Michigan.

St. John's Red Storm at Syracuse Orange (-16, 131)

Two of the top 10 winningest programs in Division I history renew acquaintances on Sunday when St. John’s attempts to end the country’s longest-active home winning streak when it faces No. 9 Syracuse. The Orange are tied with Marquette atop the Big East standings and have won 36 straight at home, with their last such loss coming Feb. 9, 2011, against Georgetown. But Syracuse is vulnerable at the moment with top outside threat James Southerland and bruising forward DaJuan Coleman both out.

Syracuse – fifth on the D-I wins list – rebounded from its first two conference losses with Monday’s 63-47 victory over Notre Dame. However, the vaunted Orange offense that averaged 82 points in non-conference action is averaging only 65.9 during Big East play. St. John’s – seventh all-time in wins – picked up its sixth victory in seven games with Wednesday’s triumph over Connecticut.

Duke Blue Devils at Boston College Eagles (+12, 145)

Duke will try to continue its winning ways when it travels to Boston College for an ACC game Sunday evening. The No. 4 Blue Devils have won four straight after dropping two of three following the injury to third-leading scorer Ryan Kelly. Duke beat North Carolina State on Thursday night, the same team that toppled the Blue Devils on Jan. 12, the first game Kelly missed with a right foot injury.

Kelly is expected to miss his eighth consecutive game with the injury, leaving fellow seniors Mason Plumlee and Seth Curry to pick up the slack. Plumlee did exactly that against North Carolina State, scoring 30 points in the 98-85 victory, while Curry finished with 26 points for his third straight game with 21 or more. Boston College will try to counter with a starting lineup that features two freshmen and three sophomores. The first two players off the bench are also sophomores.

Illinois Fighting Illini and Minnesota Golden Gophers (-10, 137)

Illinois, which snapped a three-game losing streak with a dramatic 74-72 home upset of No. 1 Indiana on Thursday, will try to build on that momentum at sputtering No. 18 Minnesota, which has dropped five of its last seven games, including a 61-50 setback at Michigan State on Wednesday. It's the second meeting of the season between the Big Ten rivals. The Golden Gophers won the first encounter, 84-67, at Illinois on Jan. 9, handing the Illini their first home loss of the season in the process.

Illinois has gone just 2-5 since the first matchup with the Gophers but Thursday's upset of the Hoosiers could just be the tonic to spark a turnaround for a team that looked like it would be a legitimate Big Ten challenger after whipping Butler, 78-61, to win the EA Sports Maui Invitational in November. In fact, after Thursday's victory over the Hoosiers, which came by way of a Tyler Griffey buzzer-beating layup on an inbounds pass with nine-tenths of a second remaining, the Illini now own four victories over teams currently rated in the top-15: No. 1 Indiana, No. 6 Gonzaga, No. 10 Ohio State and No. 14 Butler.

California Golden Bears at Arizona Wildcats (-13, 132)

Arizona looks to extend its winning streak to five on Sunday when the 7th-ranked Wildcats host California, which has lost 22 of the last 27 meetings in the series. Arizona, which took over sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 without even playing a game on Thursday, has four home games and four road games left in the regular season. California is mired in a five-way tie for fifth place, three games behind Arizona.

The Bears lost 66-62 to Arizona State on Thursday and failed to build on home wins last week over Oregon State and Oregon. Junior guard Allen Crabbe still leads the Pac-12 scoring at 19.3 points per game, but he’s shooting 25 percent (6-for-24) from 3-point range over the last three games. The Bears will need a complete effort from their defense after struggling early against Arizona State. The Wildcats are second in the Pac-12 in scoring at 74.7 points per game.

Just like their most famous alum, Larry Bird, the Sycamores come up big for bettors in the crunch. Indiana State has gone 6-2 ATS in February in each of the past four seasons and is off to a 1-1 SU and ATS start this month, heading into Saturday’s date with Southern Illinois.

Auburn Tigers (26-10-1 ATS, 14-23 SU)

Auburn isn’t a perennial power in the SEC but it has been the conference's most consistent winning bet during the month of February. Since 2008, the Tigers have covered in 70 percent of their February games despite posting a losing record. They went 6-2 ATS last year and are 2-0 ATS to start this month.

Princeton Tigers (26-19 ATS, 27-18 SU)

Got nothing better to do on a cold Friday night in February? Try betting on the Tigers. Princeton, a permanent contender in the Ivy League, has turned up the intensity on the second month of the year. The Tigers went 7-2 ATS in February 2010 and posted a 6-2 ATS mark last February. This year, Princeton is 1-1 ATS going into Friday’s game with Brown.

Notables: Bradley (25-15 ATS), BYU (25-10 ATS), Old Dominion (25-15 ATS), St. Louis (25-12-1 ATS), Texas A&M (25-12 ATS).

              Worst ATS

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-26-2 ATS, 7-30 SU)

Things fall apart for the Jackets in February. Georgia Tech used to be in the mix in the ACC but has fallen on hard times in recent seasons. The Yellow Jackets went 2-6 SU and ATS in February last season and don’t appear to be climbing out of the ACC basement anytime soon, at 2-7 SU and 3-6 ATS in conference play this year.

Air Force Falcons (11-23-1 ATS, 7-28 SU)

Life is tough in the Mountain West Conference. The so-called “mid major” could send as many as five teams to the Big Dance this year and has been on the upswing for past few seasons. So it’s understandable why the Falcons would suck so much in February. The Fly Boys have been getting better, going 6-7-1 ATS in the past two Februarys and owning a 1-1 ATS mark this month.

Providence Friars (11-24-1 ATS, 8-28 SU)

Similar to Air Force’s woes, the Friars face wave after wave of NCAA-bound talent in conference play, eventually hitting a breaking point in February. Providence has long been the Big East whipping boy but actually came through for bettors last year with a 5-3 ATS mark in February. The Friars are getting the job done once again this month, starting with a 2-0 SU and ATS mark.

Notables: Wright State (11-25-5 ATS), East Carolina (12-25-1 ATS), South Carolina (12-25-1 ATS), Tulane (12-23-2 ATS), Villanova (12-27-1 ATS).

February's best over/under college basketball bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

February is the truest time of the season for college basketball teams. Those non-conference wins don’t mean much in the heat of league play. Contenders are discovered and pretenders are unveiled as the schedule rolls toward the postseason.

We looked at the best and worst ATS play in February earlier this week, so let’s break down which teams have the best over and under records in the month of February over the past five seasons (2007-08 to 2011-12).

                Best over

Records from just February games over the last five seasons.

                Indiana State Sycamores (30-10 over/under, 23-17 SU)

Indiana State is all about February. The Sycamores are the best ATS teams in February over the last five seasons and hold claim to the best over bet as well. They split totals in their eight February games last year (4-4 over/under) but went 26-6 over/under the four previous campaigns. Indiana State is 1-2 over/under this month.

                Hofstra Pride (29-10-1 over/under, 27-13 SU)

Hofstra, the top under bet in college basketball right now (1-12 over/under), has been on the other side of the fence in Februarys past. The Pride has gone 19-4-1 over/under in the second month of the year over the past three seasons but is off to a 1-2 over/under count this month.

                Valparaiso Crusaders (28-14 over/under, 22-20 SU)

After staying under the total for most of the season, Valpo is beginning to trend toward the over just in time for February. The Crusaders are 7-1 over/under in their last eight games heading into Saturday. Valparaiso went 4-4 over/under last February but was 7-2 over/under in 2011 and 7-1 over/under in 2010.

                Notables: Towson (27-12-1 over/under), Bowling Green (26-14 over/under), Southern Illinois (26-13 over/under), Wichita State (26-14 over/under)

                Best under

                Virginia Cavaliers (7-30 over/under, 11-26 SU)

The Cavs have been under gold in February, posting at least six under paydays in the past four Februarys. Head coach Tony Bennett went 4-18 over/under in his first three seasons at Virginia and has the Cavaliers ranked second in the nation in defense (51.5 points against per game). However, totals have dropped so low, Virginia has begun to show value with the over – going 4-1 over/under in its last five heading into Sunday.

                Princeton Tigers (18-27 over/under, 27-18 SU)

Not a surprise here. The originators of the “Princeton offense” – a pass-heavy, motion offense that eats up the shot clock – naturally play under the total. The Tigers defied that logic last season, with a 6-2 over/under mark in February, but went 2-7 over/under in each of the three previous February schedules. This year, the Tigers are 3-3 over/under on the season and 2-1 over/under this month heading into the weekend.

                South Florida Bulls (9-27 over/under, 12-24 SU)

The Big East, known for its slowed-down offenses and grueling defensive pressure, will take its toll on some of the weaker programs – like USF. The Bulls rarely see the light from the bottom of the conference and have been the most consistent under play when the going gets tough in the Big East. South Florida is 3-12 over/under the previous two Februarys and 1-1 over/under this month, heading into Saturday.

                Notables: Pennsylvania (18-26-1 over/under), UConn (16-25 over/under), St. John’s (16-25-1 over/under), Columbia (15-25-1 over/under), Georgetown (12-25 over/under).

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NBA on ABC betting preview: Clippers at Knicks, Lakers at Heat
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at New York Knicks (-3.5, 193.5)

The Los Angeles Clippers got Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups and Blake Griffin back on Friday, but it did not do much good at the Miami Heat. Those three will try to break the Clippers out of their current funk when they visit the New York Knicks on Sunday afternoon. Los Angeles has lost four of its five games this month as Paul (bruised knee cap) and Griffin (hamstring) have struggled to stay on the court.

The Knicks had to wait to get back into New York thanks to the blizzard that snowed under much of the Northeast on Friday and Saturday. But after finishing a two-game road trip with a win in Minnesota, New York managed to land safely on Saturday afternoon and should be all set to take on the stumbling Clippers. Los Angeles ran into the LeBron James freight train on Friday and not even the presence of Paul and Griffin could keep the game from turning into a rout.

                        TV: 1 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (35-17, 28-24-0 ATS):
Paul had missed 12 of the previous 14 games due to the injured kneecap and Billups has played in only four games this season after recovering from surgery and battling past a foot problem. Los Angeles fell into a big rut in the games Paul missed and has lost eight of its last 11 overall to fall from the top of the Western Conference into third place behind San Antonio and Oklahoma City. While scoring had been a problem with Paul on the shelf, the Clippers showed the various defensive holes that have developed in the 111-89 setback at Miami on Friday. The Knicks don’t have anyone like James on the roster, but Carmelo Anthony is certainly capable of taking advantage of Los Angeles on the wings and in the post like James did on Friday. The Clippers are down to the last two stops on the Grammy-demanded eight-game road trip before a stretch of five straight at Staples Center.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (32-16, 25-21-2 ATS):
Only the brilliance of James has kept New York out of the top spot in the Eastern Conference, and Anthony is not all that far behind in terms of MVP-type impact. The All-Star forward went for 36 points and nine rebounds in the 100-94 win over Minnesota on Friday and has put up 31.3 points in the last three contests. The Knicks have won six of their last seven games overall and have held opponents under the century mark in each of the victories. New York relies plenty on the 3-pointer for offense and is shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc over the last seven games, despite a slight dip (8-for-26) against the Timberwolves on Friday.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
                        * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in New York.
                        * Road team is 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings.
                        * Clippers are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings.
                        * Underdog is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

                        BUZZER BEATERS:

                        1. The Knicks have won five straight at home and are 19-6 at Madison Square Garden.

                        2. Paul has averaged 21.3 points and 10.3 assists in 11 career games against New York.

                        3. Los Angeles F Matt Barnes suffered a finger injury on Friday but is expected to play Sunday.

Los Angeles Lakers at Miami Heat (-7, 202)

LeBron James even has his teammates thinking he’s from another planet with how strong his game has been of late. The Los Angeles Lakers, who visit James and the Miami Heat on Sunday afternoon, are hoping for a rare off day from the superstar forward. James needed only 11 field goal attempts to reach 30 points in a rout of the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday and is shooting 76.7 percent over the last three games. The Lakers are coming off a victory.

Los Angeles got Dwight Howard (shoulder) back on Thursday but it did not do much good in a rout at Boston. But the All-Star center settled in a little better in Friday’s win at Charlotte and pulled down 11 rebounds in 38 minutes. The Heat don’t have anyone to match up against a healthy Howard, but they do have James. The Lakers will likely run some combination of Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace, Earl Clark and Antawn Jamison at James on Sunday.

                        TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE LAKERS (24-27, 21-29-1 ATS):
Los Angeles has won four of its last five games but has only faced one playoff-caliber team in that stretch and failed miserably in a 116-95 loss at the Celtics. With Pau Gasol out at least a month after suffering a foot injury earlier in the road trip, Howard’s return from a torn labrum has become a topic of much debate surrounding the team. Howard will require surgery at some point and is playing through pain while the team is shorthanded. Bryant went scoreless in the first half at Charlotte on Friday before finishing with 20 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in the 100-93 triumph. Bryant, who has become more of a distributor as the Lakers have started to improve, did not record an assist in the loss at Boston.

ABOUT THE HEAT (33-14, 23-24-0 ATS):
James has improved his game so much that even fellow All-Stars are amazed. “He’s off the planet right now,” Dwyane Wade told reporters of James. “He’s not even the best basketball player on the planet, he’s surpassed the planet.” James went 9-for-11 in the 111-89 win over the Clippers, helping his team to a convincing win despite Chris Bosh and Ray Allen sitting out due to illness. James put on a similar shooting display at the Lakers on Jan. 17, going 17-for-25 from floor en route to a season-high 39 points in a 99-90 victory. Wade added 27 points in that victory and is battling his way through the illness taking over the Heat locker room. Wade has put up at least 20 points in each of the last four games.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
                        * Under is 7-1 in the last eight meetings in Miami.
                        * Lakers are 1-8 ATS in the last nine meetings.
                        * Underdog is 8-1 ATS in the last nine meetings.
                        * Lakers are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings in Miami.

                        BUZZER BEATERS:

                        1. The Heat have taken five of the last six meetings.

                        2. Howard, who spent the previous eight seasons with the Orlando Magic in the Southeast Division, has averaged 17 points and 13.4 rebounds in his career against Miami.

                        3. Sunday marks the last stop on Los Angeles’ seven-game Grammy-inspired road trip.

                          NBA

                          Sunday, February 10

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Five NBA teams keeping over bettors in the black
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NBA scoreboards have been humming over the past seven days, with big scores handing over bettors even bigger paydays. Since last Saturday, NBA games have posted a collective 30-21 over/under count.

While that doesn’t seem like much to the casual basketball fan, the betting public recognizes that the over is hitting at more than 58 percent in that seven-day stretch. And 58 percent is like striking oil for sports bettors. On the year, the NBA boasts a 370-362 over/under count (50.55 percent) heading into Saturday’s action.

More than a few teams are trending toward the high side of the total in recent games - even some which have been steady under plays all season. Here are five clubs cashing in the most for over bettors in recent games:

Indiana Pacers (4-1 over/over last five, 6-2 over/under last eight)

When the Pacers are playing over, you know something is up. Indiana is the perfect storm of under plays, ranking among the worst in offense and best in defense. But the Pacers, who average just 92.8 points per game, are scoring 102.75 points a night in their last eight. That offensive surge could get a boost from the return of SF Danny Granger before the All-Star break.

                          Denver Nuggets (6-0 over/under last six, 9-1 over/under last 10)

The Nuggets have been the hottest team in the NBA, coming up big not only for spread bettors but also fans of the over. Heading into Saturday, Denver rides an eight-game winning streak and has played above the number in seven of those games. The Nuggets are averaging an insane 115 points a night during this streak and have topped the 120-point plateau three times in those games.

Golden State Warriors (4-0 over/under last four, 8-1 over/under last nine)

Winning over plays is nothing new to Warriors fans. The franchise has lived by an offense-first philosophy for the better part of a decade and 2012-13 is no different. The Warriors’ lack of defense is as much to blame for those high scores as well. Golden State has allowed opponents to score over 119 points during their current three-game road trip, which ends in Dallas Saturday. Most notably, they gave up 140 points to Houston earlier this week.

Phoenix Suns (4-1 over/under last five, 6-2 over/under last eight)

The Suns’ current over run has more to do with their recent opponents than the team itself. Phoenix has played Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Memphis, Golden State and Dallas in the last five games. Those teams have a combined 19-6 over/under record in each of their last five games. The Suns offense isn’t putting much of a dent in those totals, scoring only 93.6 points in that five-game span. Phoenix finishes a home-and-home with the Thunder as hosts Sunday.

Memphis Grizzlies (3-0 over/under last three, 7-2 over/under last nine)

It seems Rudy Gay’s offense isn’t the only thing the Grizzlies are missing. In the five games since dealing their leading scorer, Memphis is averaging just 91 points and giving up an average of 94.8 points against. Those defensive numbers are nearly five points more than the Grizzlies’ top-ranked D’ has allowed this season. This over stretch is a complete 180 for the top under bet in the NBA - 19-29-1 over/under heading into the weekend.
