    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Six of the top minor league prospects of the Seattle Mariners.......

    1) Mike Zunino, C-- Florida Gators' catcher hit .333 in 51 AA at-bats in his first season as a pro ballplayer.

    2) Taijuan Walker, P-- 7-10, 4.69 in 25 AA starts LY; didn't start pitching until later in his high school career.

    3) Danny Hultzen, P-- Led Virginia to two College World Series.

    4) James Paxton, P-- 9-4, 3.05 in 21 AA starts LY; a Canadian, was drafted by Blue Jays in '09, but didn't sign there.

    15) Gabriel Guerrero, OF-- Vlad Guerrero's nephew just turned 19, but has 466 minor league ABs already, hitting .303 with 16 HRs.

    27) Chance Ruffin, P-- Made majors briefly in '11, then got shelled as relief pitcher LY. Mariners got him from Detroit in the Doug Fister deal.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

    13) Check out SportsCenter to see Marist's Chavaughn Lewis drain a tying 65-foot prayer at the end of the first OT. Red Foxes, a 16-point dog, stunned Iona 105-104 in double OT, in maybe the most exciting game played all season.

    12) Felix Hernandez gets seven years, $175M from the Mariners; that’s a lot of money. We've had our keeper fantasy league for eight years now, and Felix is one of the few players who has been on the same team all eight years.

    11) Celtics are 6-0 since Rajon Rondo blew his knee out; please don’t be the person who suggests that Boston is better off without him. They’re not.

    10) University of North Dakota teams were always called the Fighting Sioux, until that nickname was deemed offensive to Native Americans; UND has yet to get a new nickname/mascot, and apparently won’t until 2015. Not sure what the delay is, not like there’s a transfer rule for mascots.

    9) Tennessee Titans hired Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator, so that clinches that Tennessee’s game at St Louis this fall will be in primetime, since the Rams not only didn't wait to re-hire Williams, they dumped his son the assistant coach because the other coaches thought he was a know-it-all. .

    8) Carlos Boozer missed 138 games in his last six NBA seasons; that’s 23 games out of 82 each year (and one of those seasons was only 66 games). Lot of money for a guy who isn’t very durable.

    7) Mark Fox is doing his best with the Georgia Bulldogs, who won their last four games to get to 5-4 in SEC, 11-11 overall. Its tough to turn a losing program around; Fox was highly successful at Nevada, but Wolf Pack had a winning team before Fox took over. Georgia is a much tougher place to win in roundball- you have Kentucky/Florida in your league, for one.

    6) Slow news day in Big Apple: Lindsay Lohan owes $223,904 in taxes, doesn’t have it, so she moved back home. What exactly does she do for a living? If she got paid for appearing in newspapers, she’d have more money than Bill Gates.

    5) Boston Bruins' goalie Tim Thomas is 38; he took this year off to spend tim with his family, but in meantime, he was traded to the Islanders for a 2nd-round draft pick. Its unusual, but apparently salary cap-related.

    4) Wright State won in double OT at Green Bay, a strange game where Wright State had three double digit scorers, none of whom started the game. Raiders made 11-20 behind the arc, only took six foul shots (5-6).

    3) Murray State beat Belmont 79-74, giving Bruins their first OVC loss; it would be surprising if those two don't meet for the OVC title next month in the conference tournament.

    2) How did that kid on Illinois get a wide-open layup with 0:00.7 left to give Illinois its upset win over Indiana? High school teams all over America will be running plays like that next week. Lousy defense by Indiana, as they forgot the most important thing-- protect the freakin' basket.

    1) South Dakota State's Nate Wolters scored 53 points as the Jackrabbits came back from down 37-29 at the half to win 80-74 at IP-Fort Wayne. Kid was 9-14 from arc, 8-14 inside it, 10-11 from the line. Not a lot of defense in the Summit League these days.

Ducks at Stars: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks at Dallas Stars (+104, 5)

The Anaheim Ducks attempt to extend their winning streak to five games when they visit the Pacific Division-rival Dallas Stars on Friday. Anaheim kicked off its six-game road trip with a 3-0 triumph over the Avalanche in Colorado on Wednesday as Viktor Fasth made 31 saves for his first NHL shutout and defenseman Sheldon Souray recorded a goal and an assist. With the victory, the Ducks extended their point streak to six games (5-0-1) and moved into a tie atop the division with the San Jose Sharks.

Dallas completed a 2-1-0 road trip Wednesday with a 3-2 overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers. Jamie Benn recorded a goal and an assist while Jaromir Jagr set up a tally before scoring the game-winner 1:46 into the extra session. After hosting Anaheim, the Stars head back to Edmonton, where they begin another three-game trek on Tuesday.

        ABOUT THE DUCKS (7-1-1):
The impressive play of Fasth has given Anaheim one of the best goaltending tandems in the league. The 30-year-old, who won his second straight Honken Trophy - the Swedish Elite League's version of the Vezina - last season, is 4-0-0 with a 0.98 goals-against average and .962 save percentage. "He's played amazing in every game," Souray told the team's website. "He makes a big save and it gives the team confidence. He's definitely done his job, and beyond." Jonas Hiller, the Ducks' starting netminder, is 3-1-1 with a 3.54 GAA and has lost his last six starts against Dallas. Souray has scored a goal in three straight games.

        ABOUT THE STARS (5-5-1):
It's no surprise Jagr decided Wednesday's game. He is the NHL's all-time leader in overtime goals (17) and trails Phil Esposito (118) for the most game-winners in league history. The tally was the 668th of his career, tying him with Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille for 10th place on the all-time list. After recording just one assist over his first four games, Benn has registered three goals and five points in his last two contests. Goaltender Kari Lehtonen is just 7-5-2 lifetime against the Ducks but has posted a shutout in his last two home starts versus Anaheim.

        TRENDS:

        * Six of the last seven Ducks games have played under
        * Anaheim wasn't favored by more than -128 during its four-game winning streak
        * The under is 3-1-2 in the Stars' last six games
        * Stars are 1-7 in their last 8 games following a win.
        * Stars are 5-21 in their last 26 vs. a team with a winning % above .600.

        OVERTIME

        1. The Stars won five of the six meetings between the teams last season and are 7-1-2 in the last 10 encounters.

        2. Anaheim has captured only eight of its last 31 visits to Dallas.

        3. Fasth is the first goalie to win his first four NHL games since San Jose's Nolan Schaefer accomplished the feat in 2005.

Clippers at Heat: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Miami Heat (-6, 196)

It looks like a potential NBA Finals matchup on paper - and key players should be back in the fold on both sides of Friday's game between the Los Angeles Clippers and host Miami Heat. The Clippers were without superstars Blake Griffin and Chris Paul for Wednesday's 86-76 win over Orlando, though both practiced Thursday and hope to return. Miami is coming off a win over Houston that came without the services of Chris Bosh, who sat out due to illness but should be back Friday.

The Clippers will need all hands on deck if they hope to challenge the home dominance of the East-leading Heat. Miami is 20-3 on its home court this season, even with the Indiana Pacers for the best home mark in the conference. Improving that mark becomes more difficult if Paul returns from a knee injury that has knocked him out of 12 of the last 14 games. Griffin sat out Wednesday with a lingering hamstring injury, his second absence in a row after playing in the previous 197 straight games.

                  TV:
8 p.m. ET, ESPN, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), Sun Sports (Miami)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (35-16, 28-23-0 ATS):
Practice felt busier than ever Thursday, with Paul, Griffin, Chauncey Billups (left foot) and Jamal Crawford (right shoulder) all back in action. Griffin and Billups are listed as day-to-day and are expected to be in the lineup, while the statuses of Paul and Crawford remain up in the air. Billups, who has only played in three games this season, said he wants to see how he feels following Friday's shootaround before deciding on his status. "Hopefully I wake up [Friday] and I feel great and it's a go. But I have to wait and see how the recovery goes," he told the Los Angeles Times.

ABOUT THE HEAT (32-14, 22-24-0 ATS):
After LeBron James finally won his first NBA championship last year, many wondered how he would respond in 2012-13. From a statistical standpoint, King James is as good as ever. While James is "only" fourth in league scoring at 26.8 points per game, he's shooting a career-best 55.6 percent from the field. He's also averaging a career-best 8.2 rebounds and a team-best seven assists while connecting on 40.8 percent of his 3-point attempts, also a career high. James scored his 5,000th point in a Miami uniform in Wednesday's win.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Over is 7-1 in the last eight meetings in Miami.
                  * Home team is 13-3-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
                  * Over is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
                  * Clippers are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings in Miami.

                  BUZZER BEATERS:

                  1. James' field-goal percentage has risen in seven straight seasons.

                  2. The Clippers have won six of the last nine meetings, with the home team prevailing in eight straight.

                  3. Miami is just 7-14 against teams above .500.

Beware NBA teams looking ahead to All-Star break
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NBA All-Star break puts the regular season on hold for four days as the best and brightest in the league are showcased.

This brief hiatus is a blessing to some teams and a burden for others. Teams with injury concerns or clubs stuck in a losing rut can sometimes get caught looking ahead to the break while squads building momentum see the four-day layoff as a nasty speed bump.

Here are three clubs who could lose focus as we head toward the All-Star Weekend on Feb. 15.

Los Angeles Clippers (35-16 SU, 28-23 ATS)

Los Angeles was able to snap a three-game skid with a win over lowly Orlando Wednesday despite having Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Jamal Crawford and Chauncey Billups out with injuries.

The short-handed Clippers wrap up an eight-game road trip next week then host the Rockets and play the Lakers for Staples Center bragging rights just before the break. With a young core of players, and Griffin and Paul headed to the All-Star Game, it will be up to the veterans to keep this club focused in the coming week.

Brooklyn Nets (29-20 SU, 22-24-3 ATS)

Consistency has been the Nets’ biggest battle in their inaugural season in Brooklyn. They’ve gone 3-4 SU and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games and haven’t been able to find the momentum that sparked an 11-4 start to the year. The coaching change from Avery Johnson to P.J. Carlesimo has played its part in that as well as not having star PG Deron Williams at full strength.

Williams is averaging just under 12 points over the last four games (16.7 ppg on the season) and isn’t taking part in the All-Star festivities, giving him a chance to heal up. The break will be a reset for Brooklyn before the playoff push begins. The Nets' pre-ASG sked has them at Washington, home to San Antonio, at Indiana, and hosting Denver.

Chicago Bulls (29-19 SU, 20-28 ATS)

The Bulls have been waiting for this All-Star break since being eliminated from the playoffs last season. Chicago is not only looking forward to resting its thinning roster - Carlos Boozer, Joakim Noah, Marco Belinelli, Kirk Hinrich are all nursing ailments – but the break gets the Bulls closer to the return of PG Derrick Rose. Rose is expected to return this month and would give Chicago a huge lift in the second half of the schedule.

The Bulls have battled to stay above water, leaning on defense to keep pace in the East. Chicago takes on three Western foes - at Denver, at Utah, vs. San Antonio - before visiting Boston before the break. The Bulls are 6-10 SU and 4-12 ATS versus Western Conference teams this season.
