    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the more interesting Bracket Buster games; pairings were announced on Monday......

-- Creighton at St Mary's-- Two teams you'll think about in March.

-- Iona at Indiana State-- Gaels score a lot of points, give up a lot.

-- Northwestern State at Niagara-- Another fun game to watch.

-- Montana at Davidson-- Missoula to Charlotte? Long road trip.

-- South Dakota State at Murray State-- Racers struggling of late.

-- Ohio at Belmont-- Bruins are unbeaten in OVC play.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

    13) CBS had 62 cameras at the Super Bowl? They had more cameramen than either team had players. Only 11 cameras were still running during the power outage.

    12) In 2008, $92.05M was bet legally on the Giant-Patriot Super Bowl; a year later, after the economy crashed, $81.5M was wagered on the Cardinal-Steeler Super Bowl.

In a 73-minute stretch Sunday night, only 1:33 of game action took place, which helped contribute to a record $98.9M in handle, with sportsbooks making a $7.2M profit, the 21st time in last 23 years books won out.

    11) During the power outage, I read that you could risk $100 on the 49ers to win SU and collect $585 if they won. That play almost hit. Think lot of people who were down on the 49ers tried to regroup with that play?

    10) Mercedes-Benz pays $50M a year as the corporate sponsor of the Superdome; what percentage of that do you think they recouped in name recognition Sunday?

    9) Omar Vizquel finally retired as a ballplayer; he is now a roving infield instructor with the Angels.

    8) So I’m watching the Caribbean World Series after the Super Bowl Sunday night; game is tied, bottom of 9th, team A has runners on 1st and 3rd, one out, tie game, winning run is on third. Jordany Valdespin of the Mets is up, with Hanley Ramirez up next.

Genius that manages Team B walks Valdespin to get to Ramirez; you think if he did that in the major leagues he’d be fired before the game was over? So the pitcher gets Ramirez out on the first pitch, the skipper looks smarter, until the guy behind Ramirez hits a ball up the gap in right-center to end the game. Not the greatest exhibition of game strategy.

Not sure what that manager’s day job is, but hope he didn’t give it up.

    7) NHL back-to-backs so far: road teams are 11-20 (4-9 if going from home-to-road, 7-11 if second night in row on road), 13-10 at home (7-3 if second night in row at home, 6-7 if road-to-home).

    6) Miami is 8-0 in ACC play, very good team; last ACC club other than Duke/Carolina to start 8-0 in conference play was Ralph Sampson’s Virginia team in 1981. Miami head man Larranaga was an assistant coach with that team.

    5) I’m not a big Jay Bilas fan, but credit to him on Marquette-Louisville Sunday for knowing that Louisville's AAA baseball team is called the Bats. They were showing the clip of a live bat flying around Marquette’s arena during a game last week; weird stuff.

    4) You think Eldrick Woods watches golf on TV if he’s home on a Sunday afternoon? If I was a pro golfer, I'd tailor my schedule to play when there were fewer good guys playing. Money is just as green if you beat chumps.

    3) I’m convinced that golf announcers are coached not to talk about the money list during broadcasts; rookie announcer Notah Begay mentioned something about an also-ran playing to earn more money this week, when NBC’s Dan Hicks quickly piped in “…and FedEx Cup points.” like you can spend those at the supermarket. We’re not stupid, we know they play for money, and a lot of money. We're OK with it, really.

    2) Sad to see Brandon Webb retire Monday; he single-handedly carried my fantasy team’s pitching staff through the two best years my team has had (2007-08). Was hoping he could make a comeback.

    1) I don’t know where I’ll live when I retire from my day job, but sure don’t want to live anywhere that you can drive your car on a lake in winter. I like hockey, but I want warmth, and lots of it.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Study group: Tuesday’s Top 25 NCB betting notes
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Boston College at (11) Miami-Florida (-14.5)

March is still several weeks away, but the Miami Hurricanes' season is taking on a bit of a storybook feel. After another memorable win, the Hurricanes will look to stay unbeaten in Atlantic Coast Conference play when they host last-place Boston College. The Hurricanes, who have held league opponents to an average of 58.3 points, have done some pretty special things at BankUnited Center. Their last game here was a 24-point rout of Florida State and the one before that resulted in a 27-point drubbing of then-No. 1 Duke. Miami has taken the last five meetings with Boston College and is 4-0 ATS in its last four home games.

              (2) Florida at Arkansas (+10.5)

The Gators visit Arkansas aiming for their fifth straight SEC road win in a single season for the first time in program history. Florida is playing suffocating defense, having held three opponents to 40 or fewer points and 11 opponents to 50 or fewer. The Gators rank second nationally in points allowed (51) and lead the nation with a plus-23 scoring margin. The Razorbacks are 4-0 at home and 0-4 on the road in SEC play. Arkansas has scored 73 or more points in 13 of 14 home games, the exception being a 56-33 win over Vanderbilt. The Gators are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games.

              (15) Kansas State at Texas Tech (+11)

K-State was able to keep pace in the Big 12 title race with its 52-50 win at Oklahoma on Saturday, which gave the Wildcats a season sweep of the Sooners for the first time since 1993. K-State has been solid on the road of late, winning seven of its last eight road contests, including six of its last seven Big 12 road tilts. Texas Tech has lost six of its last seven games since opening Big 12 play with a 62-53 win at TCU on Jan. 5. The Wildcats have won six of the last seven meetings, including five in a row (5-0 ATS).

              (22) Wichita State at Southern Illinois (+10.5)

The Salukis haven't created a harrowing road atmosphere at SIU Arena this season. Southern Illinois plays .500 ball at home, but lately it hasn't matter where it plays. The Salukis have lost their past six games, and even playing a slumping Shocker squad doesn't feel ripe for an upset. Wichita State will be trying to avoid losing three straight games for the first time since Jan. 14, 2009. Southern Illinois hasn’t scored over 56 points in its past five games, going 0-5 ATS during that stretch.

              (10) Ohio State at (3) Michigan (-7.5)

Just over three weeks ago, Ohio State handed Michigan its first loss of the season and denied the Wolverines a chance to claim the No. 1 national ranking for the first time in 20 years. Michigan matched the 1985-86 team for the best start in school history and was the nation’s last unbeaten team before the Buckeyes ended both runs with a 56-53 victory in Columbus on Jan. 13. The Wolverines rebounded with four straight wins before Saturday’s 81-73 loss at No. 1 Indiana. Ohio State defeated Nebraska 63-56 Saturday for its fourth straight victory and has defeated Michigan in eight of the last nine meetings. The Wolverines are 4-1 ATS in their last five Tuesday games.

Blackhawks at Sharks: What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at San Jose Sharks (-121, 5.5)

The Chicago Blackhawks look to remain the only team without a regulation loss when they visit the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. Chicago started the lockout-shortened season with six consecutive victories before beginning its six-game road trip with shootout losses to the Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks. The Blackhawks got back to their winning ways in Calgary on Saturday, when Marian Hossa scored with three seconds left in regulation and Patrick Kane netted the lone goal of the shootout for a 3-2 triumph over the Flames.

San Jose fell from the ranks of clubs unbeaten in regulation as it dropped a 2-1 decision to the Ducks in Anaheim on Monday. The Sharks entered the third period with a 1-0 lead, but the Ducks capitalized on a strange bounce early in the session to tie it before defenseman Sheldon Souray's blast deflected off Scott Gomez's stick and into the net with 6:39 remaining. San Jose had a season-opening seven-game winning streak end with a shootout loss to the Nashville Predators on Saturday.

                          TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, CSN California (San Jose)

                          ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (7-0-2):
Center Dave Bolland is "very likely" to play against San Jose after leaving Friday's game in Vancouver with a lower-body injury, according to coach Joel Quenneville. Bolland participated in practice with the team Monday afternoon. "When you do feel a lot of pain anywhere, you always have that thing in the back of your head that it could be broken," Bolland told the Chicago Tribune. "I'm just glad nothing was broken or was serious." Bolland has three goals and an assist in eight games this season. Goaltender Ray Emery made the most of a rare start Saturday, making a career-high 45 saves before denying all three Flames in the shootout.

                          ABOUT THE SHARKS (7-1-1):
While San Jose's penalty kill has been outstanding, its power play has taken a nosedive. The Sharks killed off all six of their penalties Monday, extending their streak to 27 consecutive successful kills and rising to sixth in the league at 87.8 percent. However, they went 0-for-6 on the power play and are 1-for-18 over their last four games after going 12-for-32 in their first five contests. The chances of breaking out of their slump are slim as Chicago leads the league in penalty-killing with a 94.4 percent success rate. After registering 14 points apiece over their first six games, centers Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton have been kept off the scoresheet for three straight contests. Defenseman Dan Boyle missed Monday's game with the flu.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Home team is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
                          * Blackhawks are 0-4 in the last four meetings in San Jose.
                          * Under is 6-0 in Sharks’ last six overall.
                          * Under is 5-0 in Blackhawks’ last five road games.

                          OVERTIME:

                          1. Chicago G Corey Crawford is expected to start against San Jose.

                          2. The home team has won five in a row and nine of the last 10 - including playoffs - in the series.

                          3. Sharks LW Ryane Clowe leads the NHL with 56 penalty minutes after collecting 17 against Anaheim.

Lakers at Nets: What bettors need to know
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Brooklyn Nets (-3.5, 196) -

The Los Angeles Lakers have developed a habit of jumping out to big leads only to sweat out the final few minutes. They will be looking to keep their defensive intensity up for 48 minutes when they visit the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday. The Lakers have found some success recently with Kobe Bryant entering more of a distribution mode but have been operating against non-playoff teams over the last four contests. That will change with Brooklyn.

The Nets have won two of their last three and are particularly tough at home, where they have taken nine of their last 10. Recently-named All-Star Brook Lopez is shooting 62.2 percent over the last three games and might not have to deal with Lakers All-Star center Dwight Howard, who has missed the last two games with shoulder pain. Howard has reportedly ruled out surgery on his shoulder and will return to the lineup when he is pain-free.

                            TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, Time Warner Cable SportsNet (Los Angeles), YES (Brooklyn), NBATV

                            ABOUT THE LAKERS (22-26):
Los Angeles led in the fourth quarter before falling to the Phoenix Suns last week, and let leads of 29 and 18 points get trimmed to one or two possessions in tight wins over the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons. Pau Gasol has picked up his numbers in Howard’s absence with 22.5 points and 11 rebounds in the last two contests. Bryant has failed to reach 20 points in four straight games while shooting 38.7 percent. To make up for the lack of scoring, Bryant has become more of a facilitator for the likes of Gasol, Steve Nash and Metta World Peace. The Lakers are still in 10th place in the Western Conference and will have to visit Boston and Miami before the end of the current seven-game road trip.

                            ABOUT THE NETS (28-19):
Brooklyn has been off since earning a 93-89 win over the Chicago Bulls on Friday and will pay for that break with six games in nine days leading up to the All-Star break. The Nets are hoping some of the momentum from that Bulls game will carry over to Tuesday. The bench was particularly impressive in that victory, scoring the first 20 points of the fourth quarter to put Brooklyn on top. Nets point guard Deron Williams has been dealing with an ankle sprain but expects to play on Tuesday. Williams has struggled to 8-of-21 shooting with nearly as many turnovers (nine) as assists (11) in the last two contests. Joe Johnson has had some trouble finding his stroke as well, shooting 38.1 percent and failing to top 16 points in the last five.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Lakers are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games.
                            * Nets are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
                            * Lakers are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings.
                            * Under is 6-0 in the last six meetings in Brooklyn.

                            BUZZER BEATERS:

                            1. The Lakers earned a 95-90 home victory over the Nets on Nov. 20. Bryant led Los Angeles with 25 points while Lopez had 23 for Brooklyn.

                            2. Gasol is averaging 23.3 points in three games as a starter and 13.1 in seven as a reserve since returning to the lineup on Jan. 17.

                            3. Williams has averaged 18.8 points and eight assists in 21 career games against the Lakers.
