Pacers at Nuggets: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Denver Nuggets (-5.5, 194.5)

The Denver Nuggets are expected to be one of the NBA's most dangerous teams over the next ten days. That doesn't bode well for the Indiana Pacers, who wrap up a four-game road trip against a Nuggets team that has been devastating in its own arena. Denver improved to 17-3 at home with a 121-93 trouncing of the Sacramento Kings on Saturday. It was the first of a six-game homestand for Denver, which boasts the league's best rebounding totals and one of its highest-scoring offenses.

The Pacers have had defensive prowess on their side for most of the season, but it has abandoned them of late. Indiana has surrendered at least 100 points in back-to-back games after holding teams to double digits in its previous 12 contests. A fourth-quarter rally gave way to a listless overtime period last time out as the Pacers dropped a 114-110 decision to the Utah Jazz. It's the second of two meetings between the clubs this season, with Denver prevailing 92-89 in their first encounter Dec. 7.

      TV:
9 p.m. ET, Fox Sports Indiana, Altitude (Denver)

      ABOUT THE PACERS (26-18):
It's easy to see what Indiana coach Frank Vogel thinks his team needs to improve upon moving forward. "We have to tighten the screws on defense,'' he said following the loss to Utah. "We put 90 percent of our emphasis into riding the ship on the offensive end (Saturday). You reach a point where you realize you have to tighten the screws. It's tough to beat good teams in their buildings when you aren't tied together on defense.'' Even with an improved defensive effort, the Pacers will be in tough at the Pepsi Center, having dropped six of their last seven games there.

      ABOUT THE NUGGETS (27-18):
Denver may not be able to match Indiana's defensive intensity, but it won't need to if it continues to score at will. The Nuggets have averaged nearly 116 points during their three-game winning streak to move into fourth in the league at 103.6 for the season. Two of the teams ahead of them - Oklahoma City and Houston - were outgunned by the Nuggets during the streak, which could continue to grow with Denver hosting the Pacers, Rockets, New Orleans Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Bulls before hitting the road for four in a row beginning Feb. 9.

      TRENDS:

      * Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Denver.
      * Over is 5-0 in Nuggets’ last five home games.
      * Nuggets are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 vs. NBA Central foes.
      * Pacers are 1-7 ATS in their last eight road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

      BUZZER BEATERS:

      1. The Nuggets have lost six games when leading after the third quarter, the second-most in the Western Conference.

      2. Denver's 71 first-half points against Sacramento set a season high.

      3. Indiana has allowed 100 or more points eight times, the fewest in the East.

NHL game of the day: Canucks at Kings
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings (-133, 5)

With their first win of the season finally behind them, the Los Angeles Kings go for two straight when they host the Vancouver Canucks on Monday. The Kings began the defense of their Stanley Cup championship with three consecutive losses, including Wednesday's overtime setback to the Edmonton Oilers on the road. Los Angeles concluded its three-game trip Saturday with a 4-2 triumph over the Phoenix Coyotes as Anze Kopitar scored his first two goals of the campaign.

Vancouver is concluding its three-game tour of California. The Canucks began the trip with a 5-0 victory over the Ducks in Anaheim on Friday before running into the red-hot San Jose Sharks on Sunday. They fell behind by two goals early and suffered a 4-1 loss, becoming the Sharks' fifth straight victim to start the season. Captain Henrik Sedin failed to record a point, leaving him six away from surpassing Markus Naslund (756) as Vancouver's all-time leader.

        TV:
10:30 p.m. ET, TSN, FSN West (Los Angeles)

        ABOUT THE CANUCKS (2-2-1):
Alex Edler has 22 career power-play goals, tying him with Doug Lidster and Ed Jovanovski for sixth place on the franchise list among defensemen. Vancouver proved hockey is a game of inches on Sunday. The club managed just one goal against San Jose but easily could have had six as it hit the post four times and rang one shot off the crossbar. "We had some looks, we hit some posts," said left wing Alex Burrows, who scored the team's lone goal. "At the end of the day, we have to score some goals on our power play." The Canucks went 0-for-7 with the man advantage.

        ABOUT THE KINGS (1-2-1):
Los Angeles would receive a much-needed boost if its power play began clicking. The Kings failed to cash in on four opportunities Saturday and are 0-for-23 thus far this season, making them the only team in the league without a man-advantage goal. After hosting the Nashville Predators on Thursday, Los Angeles plays eight of its next nine games away from the Staples Center. It begins a five-game road trip in Anaheim on Saturday. The trek continues through Columbus, Nashville, Detroit and St. Louis before the Kings return home to entertain the Blue Jackets on Feb. 15. They then go back on the road for games in Chicago, Edmonton and Calgary.

        TRENDS:

        * Canucks are 1-4 in their last five vs. a team with a losing record.
        * Under is 4-0 in Canucks’ last four overall.
        * Under is 7-0 in Kings’ last seven games following a win.
        * Kings are 4-0 in their last four Monday games.

        OVERTIME:

        1. Canucks coach Alain Vigneault is two victories away from 400 for his career.

        2. Kings LW Kyle Clifford is riding a career-high four-game point streak.

        3. Burrows passed Dennis Vervegaert and Alex Mogilny for 14th place on Vancouver's all-time list with his 140th goal.
