    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

According to Sporting News, six best starters and six best relievers........

    starters relievers
T1) Clayton Kershaw 1) Craig Kimbrel
T1) Justin Verlander 2) Kenley Jansen
    3) Stephen Strasburg 3) Jonathan Papelbon
T4) David Price 4) Ernesto Frieri
T4) Felix Hernandez 5) Jason Motte
T4) Cliff Lee 6) Drew Storen

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Thinking out loud with weekend here........

    13) VCU led by 7 at Richmond with 0:40 left, but blew the lead and lost to the crosstown rival Spiders 86-74 in OT. VCU outscored Richmond 27-17 on foul line, but Spiders made 12-27 behind the arc.

    12) Western Illinois led 43-31 with 8:31 left at IUP-Fort Wayne, didn't score another point, but hung on for an ugly 43-40 win; Panthers' last hoop of the game came with 12:35 left. Very strange game to watch.

    11) UCLA held Arizona to 5-24 from arc in a surprisingly easy 84-73 win in Tucson, its first win at Arizona in five years. Bruin PG Larry Drew II had nine assists and controlled the game in his 35 minutes on the floor.

    10) Weber State got caught looking ahead to this weekend's showdown with Montana; Wildcats got upset 79-74 at Montana State, for their first Big Sky loss this season. Montana beat Idaho State; they have a one-game lead in the Big Sky standings.

    9) D’backs-Braves pull off a 7-player trade, sending Justin Upton to Chief Nokohoma’s tent, with Martin Prado heading to the desert. 23-year old pitching prospect Randall Delgado could help bolster Arizona’s starting pitching depth. Also means the Upton brothers are on the same team now.

    8) Wonder how group sales people for Miami Marlins are faring this winter? If I had their job, think I’d try and sell fans on coming to ballpark early to see Giancarlo Stanton take BP- with their new/not improved lineup, he might walk 120 times during games this year, so BP will be fans’ best chance to see Stanton pound the ball.

    7) Cincinnati Reds’ minor league base stealing phenom Billy Hamilton will start season playing CF at AAA; he stole 100+ bases in A ball LY, and is expected to rise quickly through the Cincinnati chain.

    6) Bronx Bombers signed A’s castoff/minor league hitting star Dan Johnson to a minor league contract, but he’ll make their team. Johnson could put up big numbers as a lefty DH in the hideously cheap Bronx ballpark, where anything in the air to rightfield is liable to end up a home run.

    5) Its January 24, I see this on CBSSports.com’s fantasy website:

    “Holliday not worried about back”.

Just that sentence makes my stomach churn, because if they’re mentioning Matt Holliday’s back in January, he’s got issues. We’re entering Year #9 of our 16-team, 25-man roster fantasy league; Holliday is the only guy who has been on my team since Day 1. Need him healthy.

    4) New Mexico State’s head football coach, DeWayne Walker, resigned to become DBs coach for Jacksonville Jaguars; that’s a kick in the teeth to a program that is one of odd schools out in all this conference realignment stuff.

You leave a college head coaching job, you at least have to become an NFL coordinator. Becoming a DB coach is jumping off a sinking ship.

    3) Guy that runs NCAA, Mark Emmert, makes $1.6M a year; if a college athlete gets a couple free meals from a booster, he gets declared ineligible for receiving special benefits and is vilified on ESPN like he’s a felon. Seems fair.

    2) 77-year old Gary Player is considered one of the best golfers ever; he won nine majors, and $1.8M total in his great career. Brian Gay won $1M last week, has won $17M in his career, with four career wins, none in majors- I couldn’t pick the guy out of a lineup. Timing is everything in life.

    1) It is so cold here this week it is sickening, numbing, hideous weather, but just think; this time next year, the Super Bowl is being played outdoors, only 150 miles south of here, in New Jersey. Good luck with that!!!

Where the action is: Super Bowl mid-week line moves

The common trend, no matter if you’re betting Super Bowl XLVII in Las Vegas or online, is that the public loves the Baltimore Ravens. So much so, that sportsbooks have dropped the underdog from as high as +5 to +3.5 heading into the weekend before the Super Bowl.

Some books are dealing the 49ers at the discounted spread despite a strong belief that San Francisco should be a 5-point or even bigger favorite in New Orleans on Feb. 3.

“We believe that the line should be much greater on San Francisco, maybe more towards a 6-point spread,” Scott Birnie, a senior trader for UWin.com, told Covers. “However, Vegas and ourselves are trying not to lay anymore of the ‘People’s Favorite’.”

In Las Vegas, most sportsbooks are dealing San Francisco -3.5, adjusting the juice from -115 to -110 with money still coming in on Baltimore. According to Jay Rood, sportsbook director at the MGM Mirage, Ravens money outnumbers 49ers money at a 3-to-1 count.

“The San Francisco money could be waiting on the sideline waiting for us to go to -3 at some point,” Rood told Covers.

The one-sided wagering on the Ravens isn’t just reserved to the spread. Books are getting a lot of wagers on the moneyline, expecting Baltimore to win straight up – especially after big wins at Denver and New England in the postseason.

San Francisco opened as a -205 moneyline favorite but has since been bet down to as low as -164, with the Ravens coming back at +150 after opening as +170 moneyline pups.

While the early action had dictated some adjustments, only about 20 percent of the total handle for Super Bowl XLVII will come in before the weekend of the Big Game.

As for some of the early Super Bowl prop bets attracting action, ‘Will there be a special teams touchdown’ (Yes +175), ‘First Player to Score a TD’ (Anquan Bolden +1,200), Coin Toss (58 percent on tails), and the halftime show props are all popular plays.

“’Will Beyonce show cleavage’ number is sharp as we are getting even action on the Yes (-500) and No (+300),” Dave Mason of BetOnline.ag told Covers.

NFL Pro Bowl: What bettors need to know

        AFC vs. NFC (Pick, 83)

Betting the Pro Bowl can be tricky. You never know who is going to play and for how long. One thing we do know is that defenses are hardly a factor in the Pro Bowl, as evidenced by the 83-point total, so we decided to break down the key offensive positions in an attempt to find a betting edge.

        Quarterbacks

AFC- Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, Matt Schaub

The AFC was hoping to have the Patriots’ Tom Brady to round out its QB carousel, but he won’t participate because of injury. Each of the AFC QBs has brought their favorite targets with them to Hawaii. Demaryius Thomas, Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels should have excellent chemistry with their club QBs and that could make a difference in the game.

NFC – Drew Brees, Eli Manning, Russell Wilson

The NFC quarterbacks in this year’s game were supposed to be a completely different trio, but Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan and Robert Griffin III are all dealing with injuries. That being said, the NFC still boasts an elite crop of QBs led by Drew Brees. But only Manning (Victor Cruz) will be throwing to a target he’s accustomed to.

        Edge: AFC

        Running Backs

AFC – Arian Foster, Jamaal Charles, C.J. Spiller

The AFC can’t hold a candle to the elite crop of RBs the NFC is bringing to the table. Some would argue that Foster is the only back of this trio deserving of playing in the game.

NFC – Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, Doug Martin

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better running trio in the NFL. Peterson nearly broke the single-season rushing record, Lynch rushed for over 1,500 yards and Martin shocked the football world with a breakout season as a rookie.

        Edge: NFC

        Receivers

AFC – A.J. Green, Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Demaryius Thomas, Owen Daniels

As mentioned above, the AFC receiving corps will have familiarity with their team quarterbacks. Wayne and Thomas are used to snatching darts from Manning, while Daniels and Johnson already have excellent chemistry with Matt Schaub.

NFC – Julio Jones, Victor Cruz, Larry Fitzgerald, Vincent Jackson, Jason Witten

The NFC receiving group was supposed to be led by Calvin Johnson, but Megatron isn’t healthy enough to play after his record-setting campaign. Larry Fitzgerald is subbing in despite only having 798 receiving yards and four TDs this season.

        Edge: AFC

        Betting trends:

*The AFC posted a wild 59-41 victory over the NFC in the Pro Bowl last year.
*The AFC has won two of the last three Pro Bowls and holds a 15-12 all-time series lead.
*The NFC is 3-2 ATS in the last five Pro Bowls and the last three have played over the total.

Seven NBA betting trends to consider
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We rummaged through our stats to uncover some interesting NBA trends to assist you with your capping of the hard court.

Here are seven NBA trends for bettors to consider:

                  Toronto Raptors

The Raptors took the Heat to overtime Wednesday night and put up 116 points in the loss. Toronto has now played over the total in six straight games. The Raps make the short trip to Orlando to take on the Magic, who have also been an excellent over play, Thursday night.

                  Indiana Pacers

The Pacers allowed an opponent to score 100 points for the first time in 13 games in Wednesday’s loss to the Blazers. But Indiana only put up 80 points in the contest to help bettors cash in on another under play. The Pacers have gone low in 11 of their last 13 games and visit Utah Saturday.

                  Orlando Magic

The Magic are 13-1-1 O/U in their last 15 games, earning a push for bettors Tuesday at Detroit. Orlando is now 22-15-2 O/U heading into its matchup with Toronto Thursday.

                  Washington Wizards

The Wizards are currently the hottest bet in the Association with an eight-game cover streak. Washington covered Wednesday night at Utah and hosts
                  Minnesota Friday night.

                  Golden State Warriors

The Warriors have put together a string of four consecutive covers. What makes the run more impressive is three of those covers were against top-notch opponents (Spurs, Clippers, Thunder). Golden State visits Chicago Friday.

                  Dallas Mavericks

The Mavs are currently the best bet in the West, covering in seven straight games. They host the high-powered Spurs Friday.

                  Houston Rockets

The Rockets blew another cover Wednesday night in a loss to Denver. Houston has failed to cover in nine straight games heading into Friday’s date with the Hornets in New Orleans.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nets at Grizzlies: What bettors need to know
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brooklyn Nets at Memphis Grizzlies (-4.5, 177.5)

The Memphis Grizzlies have bounced back from a three-game skid by winning three of the past four games. More importantly for the Grizzlies is the way they have tightened up defensively after allowing an average of 102 points during the losing streak. That defense will be tested when the red-hot Brooklyn Nets pay a visit to Memphis on Friday night. The Grizzlies are second to Indiana in points allowed at 89.5 and have surrendered an average of only 81.5 points in the last four. The only loss in the span was an 82-81 setback to the Pacers.

The Nets have won three straight and 10 of 11 following Wednesday's 91-83 victory at Minnesota. Brooklyn's defense hasn't been too shabby either, permitting only 85.7 points during the three-game win streak. The Nets are 12-2 since assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo was promoted to replace the fired Avery Johnson. The hot spell has propelled the team within one game of the New York Knicks for the lead in the Atlantic Division. The Grizzles and Nets have split the past 10 meetings.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), SportSouth (Memphis)

ABOUT THE NETS (26-16, 20-19-3 ATS):
A broken foot cost center Brook Lopez all but five games last season - and may have prevented him from being dealt to Orlando for Dwight Howard. Lopez is doing his best to make sure Brooklyn has no misgivings about failing to make the trade. The 7-footer scored a team-high 22 points against Minnesota, giving him four 20-point outings in his last five games. Lopez is averaging 20 points and 8.5 rebounds in the past five games, and his shooting percentage (52.1) is his highest since his 2008-09 rookie campaign (53.1)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (27-14, 24-16-1 ATS):
Defense isn't the only area where Memphis made huge strides. After being held to 85 points or fewer in six consecutive games, the Grizzlies broke out of their doldrums in a 106-93 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. The offensive eruption came 24 hours after the team dealt away reserves Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington and Josh Selby in a salary-dump trade. Reserve forward Darrell Arthur wasted no time capitalizing on the additional playing time by scoring a season-high 20 points.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                            * Nets are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Memphis.
                            * Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Memphis.
                            * Nets are 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
                            * Road team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

                            BUZZER BEATERS:

                            1. Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph, who leads the NBA with 27 double-doubles, was named to the Western Conference All-Star team on Thursday.

                            2. After losing its final four road games in December, Brooklyn is 5-1 away from home this month.

                            3. The magic number for Memphis is 100. The team is 12-0 when scoring in triple digits.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
